EXEMPTION
Novel DNA and/or novel protein not present in final food
Eg : Processing aids and food additive, acidic food (pickles) and salty food (soy sauce)
Food from animals fed with GM animal feed
(e.g. meat, milk, eggs).
Highly refined foods
e.g. refined oil, sugar, corn syrup, honey Foods produced
with GM enzyme
(e.g. cheese, bakery products produced
with amylase).
Foods produced from
fermentation using GMM (Genetically
Modified Microorganisms)
not present in the final products
(e.g. yoghurt).
No EXEMPTION if gene derived from animalor substances that may cause hypersensitivity
Important Notice!!
IMPACT OF GMF LABELLING
Consumer
Promotes transparency and avails consumers to an informed choice on GMF.
In line with consumers’ right to know.
Addresses religious sensitivities of our plural society in terms of the source of the food, as well as ethical and moral concerns.
23
IMPACT OF GMF LABELLING
Industry
Need to understand the new labeling requirements to comply to the law.
May change their ingredients or source or modify process to adapt to the current requirement.
Encourages industry to apply for approval for those events yet to be approved.
Improvement in traceability along the supply chain.
24
IMPACT OF GMF LABELLING
Government
Important information that might have health
implications (allergenic effects) are made known.
Prevents dumping of GMF into the country that is not
authorized or approved.
Allows for traceability of GMFs where contaminated
GMF could be identified and effective control
measures could be implemented.
25
CONCLUSIONS
Consumers should be given the choice to choose (informed choice)
Regulatory Framework to ensure the safety of food
Ethical, cultural and religious issues must be considered
