Past-Potentate’s Message Illustrious Sir Thomas J. Cole, Jr.
As I write this I realize this is my last newsletter as Potentate.
It has been a long year in some ways but it also went by so
very quickly, if that makes sense. I had a lot of fun as did
Cindy, but it was also a lot of work. That work could not have
been accomplished without the many people that stepped
and got involved. I would like to thank (in no particular
order) my Chief Aid Greg Pine and his lady Linda who hauled
and set up the camel’s milk this year, Pat Brown and his lady
Michelle for running the Potentates Trip to New Orleans, Jim
Ruby and Lady Colleen for putting together a beautiful Potentate’s Ball, Fred Roland and lady Judy
Lemley for running the Bingo’s, Jim Stevens and his Lady Joann for hosting the Harvest ball, Steward
Knapp and his lady Carrie for hosting all the Nur Dines Out events. As for the Children’s events Dawn
Reynolds, Tammy McAleeese and Michelle Brown did a fine job with both the Easter party and the
Children’s Christmas Party. Also not to forget Chris Ruby for his work on MASA as housing Chair, my
OG Glen Conley and lady Patricia for hosting the Sea Witch event and last but not least my Assistant
Rabban Ricky Swalm and his Lady Patricia (Swalmy). If I forgot anybody on the events please forgive
me after all I just turned 65 so I’m an old Guy LOL.
There are many other people in which to thank, Dave Hutchins works hard on the shrine with
repairs Painting etc. Ruben Kelly for all of his hard work both in the building and the office, and I
could not forget Helga Sterling for the work she does and keeping the Shrine on its proper course. Our
IT manager Ed Reynolds has also donated many hours of his time keeping and upgrading our
computer systems. Again if I forgot someone please excuse me.
Our Shrine is in a tough position, with only about 560 members the dues are falling far short of
keeping the Shrine running. That leave rentals and fund raisers to fill the gap, I learned the hard way.
Even if we have full rentals the Shrine still needs to raise about 40,000 dollars just to break even. We
do have Curt Cole running the Nur Lotto, Thanks Curt, which if completely sold out raises about
10,000 dollars so please help your shrine and sell and buy those tickets. We can make this Shrine
Great all we need is for people to participate and get involved.
It has been an honor to serve you as the Nur Shrine Potentate, Cindy and I truly enjoyed it and
the new friends we met. I want to leave this by saying thank you for the opportunity and the support I
got form all the units and clubs and all the members that came to and supported the Shrine.
God Bless
Ill Sir Tom
NUR NEWS 4 ___________________________________________________________________________________
Dear Nobles:
I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I am very
honored to be elected to represent Nur Shrine as your Potentate for 2018
and for its 65th anniversary. I would like to first extend a big THANK YOU
to the Divan and Nobility for their continued support and dedication to Nur
Shrine. It is our members that make this Shrine stand out from all others.
This upcoming year, we, as Nur Shrine, have some opportunities to grow
our brotherhood. The Nobility, can take a more active role in recruiting
Great Masons into this Fraternity which is essential to increase
membership, support our units and clubs, and promote community awareness for our philanthropic
cause. We will welcome formation of new units and clubs to inspire and increase Nobility
participation. While I’ve worked with the Elected Divan for the last five years, the Shrine has formed 2
new units and revived 3 more units. We, as the nobility, need to keep this momentum going with the
Shrine.
Let’s remember that we are MASONS first and will act accordingly. The Shriners Organization is the
elite of all Masons, and it should always showcase both the best and fun side that masonry offers.
Our Shrine Ladies have become more involved by making a step forward in developing the ladies craft
room to give a place for the ladies to be creative and hold crafting supplies.
With focus on the future, making the Shrine financially solvent again for our members is essential.
Without Nur Shrine we will not be able to support our main goal which is the Hospitals for Children.
Which leads into my slogan for 2018, “Cruisin’ for our Kids”. This is meant to remind us of who we
are, what we do for our children and why we are the greatest fraternity in the world. The car on the
pin is of my own 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Convertible. When I first purchased this vehicle, the top
was torn badly, it was rusting apart in several areas, the motor didn’t run well and the transmission
leaked more than the Exxon Valdez. But I rolled up my sleeves and went to work on rebuilding the
engine, replacing the suspension and investing in the bodywork. Now it has been a featured car and
been requested at several car events. This can be the story of Nur Shrine, we need members like you
to roll up your sleeves and participate and let’s show others what makes the Shrine worth the effort.
I am looking forward to seeing all of you through this year’s events. We again have a jam-packed year
with events for the nobility, their ladies, and families.
Yours in the faith,
Joe McAleese

Happy New Year!
In the spirit of the new year, we call upon all of you – particularly
those with time on their hands – to volunteer to help with projects
aimed at making NUR Shrine a better place.
Put together articles and pictures for NUR News.
Run for officer of units/clubs – many have held the same office for many years and
would appreciate being relieved of the responsibility. Take on an office only if you are
willing to do what it takes to fulfill that office and make the unit/club prosper.
Volunteer with the M&M Crew – see article later in this issue.
Help run NUR events.
Make suggestions to the Divan about what needs to be done.
Promote membership through your Blue Lodges.
You will note that there is a space for each unit/club to share its news, activities, pictures, etc.,
but many are empty. I urge everyone to encourage his group to participate in this
communication. Better communication will promote harmony and cooperation.

Chaplain’s Corner
Ed Roth, P.P., Chaplain
What time is it? This question is often asked because we have numerous things on our schedules that have to be started or completed.
Time is a funny thing. There is either just enough, too little or too much. We try to save it. We often waste it. We use it for good causes or misuse it in random ways. There is the past, the present and the future. Today is the day we looked forward to yesterday and
tomorrow today will be yesterday. We spend time talking about what we did; what we are doing and what we will do.
In our daily lives time is usually enhanced by what we do with others and for them as we enjoy their company. All time, talking, reading to children, roaming through a garden, enjoying a show, is given to us by our God. It is up to us to determine how we use it. It is only right that we should use it with Him in mind. In the past year we have lost a number of fraternal brothers as they have passed from this life into eternity. They were men who vowed as Masons to reach out to others in distress to help them through times of need. They were men who made other lives lighter by helping to lift burdens as God would want us to do. They did not always have the time to reach out to another in need. Rather they made time in their day to do so.
God places a great number of opportunities on our plates to help do His will. As we can see by the state of the world around us, we often ignore His ways and do those things we think will be best for us no matter what the consequences will be for others.
In the past year we have seen destruction by major hurricanes, floods and fires and the outreach of people to help others clean up and start to rebuild. We see the talents of Shrine doctors as they use God given gifts to restore abilities to children placed in their care. We see first responders as they put aside their own needs to extend an uplifting arm to someone else. We can use our resources in ways to benefit humanity.
God has given us this funny, flexible thing called time. It is time to give more back to Him in ways He would have us use it. Let us look up today so we may have better times tomorrow through God's guidance.
So mote it be.

Breathing new life into NUR Shrine
By Assistant Rabban, Dave Hutchins
I joined NUR just a few years ago and was told it was a great opportunity to enjoy fun, philanthropy & fellowship
with my fellow Masons. When I went through warm sands, I was handed an information packet containing within a
welcome letter that amongst other things explained that as a Noble of the Mystic Shrine and member of Shriners
International, I am part owner of not only my local shrine center but also of the Shriners Hospitals for Children. I took this
to mean NUR was my house. Within the house I live in, when something needs to be fixed, I fix it. When something needs
to be cleaned, I clean it and so on. We as Nobles of NUR don’t seem to take that same care with our other home, NUR
Shrine. Whenever something needs to be done, we leave it up to NUR holding company.
I have always heard tales of the “M&M Crew”. It was explained to me that a group of nobles would get together &
perform the tasks needed around the shrine rather than hiring outside contractors. Not all of the guys in the M&M crew
had mechanical skills but everyone had a part in keeping up with the maintenance of NUR, even if it was just handing
tools to the guy on the ladder or running to the hardware store for tools. I am not sure what happened but the M&M crew
seems to have disappeared and under the request of Ill. Sir Tom Cole, I have been tasked with reviving it.
With membership levels dwindling in both freemasonry and Shriners, our finances do not go as far as they used
to. We can no longer afford to pay contractors to do things like paint the walls, change light bulbs, fix door knobs and so
on. It is time we put our house back into repair. If you have construction or trade skills or
maybe not, you can help in some way or another. Remember the name of
the game is who can work together & best agree.
My question to you is: How important is NUR Shrine Center to you?

Nur Shrine Car Club
Greetings Nobles,
The year is coming to a close and it’s time to start our work list for our prize vehicles for another year of
operation in parades and shows. We had a wonderful time holding our October meeting off site at the Green
Turtle. There was of course our cars, Club members, our ladies, and families were in attendance. Brotherhood
and fellowship was had by all that evening.
The car club is trying to plan a car show for next fall. Please look for updates throughout the year.
Again you don’t need to own a classic or antique car to join the car club, everyone is welcome.
If you are interested in joining the Car Club, you can contact one of the officers, come out to a meeting or at one
of the parades. The Car Club meetings are held at 7:30 pm on the fourth Wednesday of every month in the
Motor Corp Room in the Nur Shrine.
For more information or to join the club, email me: Joe McAleese at [email protected] or call me at
267-838-8626. In your email please put “Nur Shrine Car Club” in the subject line.

The parade year is now over and we are taking this
time to wrench our rides and look forward to the new
parade season while looking back on the past season.
This past season was busy with both parades and
social events. We concluded the year with the Cecil
County Christmas parade in December where we had
our annual “last hurrah” tailgate party, in conjunction
with the Motorcycle Club!
The Mini Choppers is more than just a parade club
though. We are a social club that likes hanging out
together. We started the year at the home of Bucky
Lloyd for our annual February Tune Up in his man
cave. March found us at Sheridan’s Irish Pub in Smyrna, DE for a spring social. Several Mini Choppers made the trip
down to Daytona for Imperial Sessions in
mid-July and at the end of July we had
our summer social enjoying dinner and a
cruise onboard the Riverboat Queen in
Wilmington’s Riverfront! In August the
guys gathered for some comradery at
Lee’s Landing in Port Deposit, MD, then
it was on to the Sea Witch Weekend in
Rehoboth Beach staying at the Brighton
Suites Hotel!
