The Tyler Junior College Nursing program gives equal consideration to all applicants for admission, and participation in its programs and activities without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, marital status, disability, veteran status or limited English proficiency (LEP). Admission to TJC does not guarantee admission to certain selective programs. Student enrollment in these programs is limited by the following factors, including but not limited to; program capacity, clinical space, prior work experience, academic preparation, prior academic achievement, negative drug screening, and a clear criminal background check. Specific application information and admission policies for the TJC Nursing program are outlined in the Admission Guidelines designated for each pathway. Admission policies/criteria are reviewed each semester and are subject to change between admission periods. Some changes could affect eligibility for admission to the program.

Welcome to TJC Nursing!Thank you for considering TJC Nursing to begin your journey of becoming a Nurse!
TJC has been training area nurses since 1951, when it opened the Texas Eastern School of Nursing, in cooperation with Mother Frances and Medical Center hospitals. Since then, thousands of area nurses have received their start at TJC!
The Nursing program is a selective admissions program. This means only a limited number of students can begin the program each semester. As part of the selective admissions process you have to complete certain admission criteria to be eligible for admission.
These Admission Guidelines are structured to guide you through each stage of the admission process. You are responsible for meeting all requirements and including all required supporting documentation when you apply.

Our LVN to ADN transition program is an accelerated program of study for licensed LVNs. Graduates will be awarded an Associate of Applied Science degree and are eligible to apply for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).
With state-of-the-art facilities, small class sizes and expert, hands-on faculty, you will soon have the knowledge and skills needed to advance your career.

General Admission to TJCYou must be accepted as a TJC student before you can apply to the Nursing program. Your application for admission to TJC can be completed and submitted on-line at www.tjc.edu/apply.
When you apply to the Nursing program you must include your "A Number" (student ID).
Admission to TJC does not guarantee admission to the Nursing program. The number of students admitted to the Nursing program is limited and you must submit a separate application to be considered.
Minimum Age RequirementYou must be a minimum of 18 years old at the time you apply to the nursing program.
Submit Official TranscriptsYou must submit an official transcript from each college/university you have attended (except from TJC) even if you have course(s) 'in progress' or the completed coursework is not required for any nursing pathway.
When you submit a transcript you must:
• Submit an official transcript• Submit the transcript to the TJC Registrar’s Office
The transcript must be received by the Registrar's Office by 11:59 p.m. on the last day of the admission period.• Submit a transcript with the most recent semester of coursework• Complete the online transcript evaluation request form

If a college submits transcripts electronically, contact the TJC Registrar’s office at 903-510-2400 to verify that TJC is able to accept the electronic version. It is your responsibility to make sure transcript(s) are received.
Admission requirements for the TJC Nursing, Associate Degree LVN-RN Transition pathway are outlined in these Admission Guidelines. It is your responsibility to ensure that:
• You have read and understand all admission requirements outlined in this document• All admission requirements are compliant by 11:59 p.m. on the last day of the admission period• All supporting documents are submitted/received in the indicated office or online software by
11:59 p.m. on the last day of the admission period• Your online application is submitted by 11:59 p.m. on the last day of admission period
If you do not meet the admission requirements outlined in this document by the deadline, your application is incomplete and cannot be processed.

During clinical rotations you will perform activities that involve direct patient contact with the potential to be exposed to blood or bodily fluids.
Nursing applicants must submit documentation in compliance with Texas Administrative Code 25.1.97.B Immunization Requirements in Texas Elementary and Secondary Schools and Institutions of Higher Education.
The following health requirements must be compliant and submitted to CastleBranch by 11:59 p.m. on the last day of the admission period.
A surface antibody titer is a lab test conducted on a sample of your blood to determine if you have immunity to a specific disease. If your Hepatitis B titer is NOT positive, contact the TJC Nursing office at 903-510-2869 to receive further instructions.
Order your CastleBranch PackageAll health requirement documents must be submitted electronically to CastleBranch (a document tracking service). You need to create your CastleBranch account, purchase your Nursing Applicant Tracker and upload your documents by 11:59 p.m. on the last day of the admission period.
You don't have to wait for the admission period to purchase your health requirement tracker and start submitting your documents.
Follow the directions to create your account and purchase your tracker:

TITERS OR VACCINATIONSApplicants must submit a valid laboratory report that indicates confirmation of either immunity or infection (TAC25 §97.65)
Applicants must show acceptable evidence of vaccination (TAC25 §97.64, 97.68)

When you apply to the LVN-RN Transition pathway you must have an active Texas vocational nursing license before beginning the Nursing program and you must maintain the license throughout the duration of enrollment in the program.
When you apply, you must also be compliant with one of the following options:
OPTION ONE
Submit proof that your Vocational Nursing license was first issued within the last five years.
OPTION TWO
If Vocational Nursing license was issued over five years ago, submit proof that you have been employed as a Licensed Vocational Nurse:
• Working an average of 48 hours per month for a minimum of six months.
• Six months of employment must be within the last five years.
If you are enrolled in your last semester of a Vocational Nursing program during the admission period you are eligible to apply to the LVN-RN Transition pathway.
Submit an unofficial transcript showing enrollment in the Vocational Nursing program and submit a complete program curriculum outline/degree plan. Upon completion of the program you must submit proof of completion/graduation and proof of LVN licensure by the deadline provided.

If you submit an application with a prerequisite course 'in progress' you must submit proof of enrollment in the course during the semester the admission period is open. When you complete the course you must submit proof that you completed the course and met the minimum grade requirement. See page 12 for instructions.

BIOL 2420 Microbiology is a prerequisite to all RNSG courses and must be complete before you can begin the nursing program. If BIOL 2420 is not complete when you submit your application you must provide proof it is complete with the minimum grade by the deadline provided.
OPTION TWO
The following course must be complete with a grade of 'C' or better:
• BIOL 2401 Anatomy & Physiology I
A maximum of two of the following courses can be 'in progress', all remaining courses must be complete with a grade of 'C' or better:

The Associate Degree Nursing LVN-RN Transition pathway has the following prerequisite courses:

ENGL 2332, ENGL 2333, HIST 2311, HIST 2312, HUMA 1301, PHIL 1301, PHIL 1304, PHIL 2306, ARTS 1301, DANC 2303, DRAM 1310, MUSI 1306 or MUSI 1310.
When you apply, you must be compliant with one of the following options:

CE A&P REFRESHER FOR NURSINGThe A&P refresher course is an online, self-paced (8 weeks) course offered through TJC's School of Continuing Studies.
• Cost: approx. $35• Unlimited attempts• Valid for five years from date of completion
Read the CE Refresher Course Information Sheet before registering for the course.
Register for the course online through the School of Continuing Studies website at: www.tjc.edu/continuingstudies.
Anatomy & Physiology courses completed over five years ago are expired. If one or both of your A&P courses are expired you must complete one of the approved A&P renewal options.
Your A&P renewal option cannot be 'in progress' when you apply. You must submit the final test scores or certificate of completion with your application.
HESI A2 EXAM - A&P ONLYIf you take the A&P section of the HESI A2 exam you must meet the following requirements:
• Minimum score of 80%
• Cost: approx. $50• One attempt per year• Valid for one year from date of exam

Course(s) 'In Progress' at TJCIf a course is 'in progress' at Tyler Junior College, submit one of the following documents with your application:
• A Degree Works summary showing the course(s) 'in progress' during the semester the admission period is open.
• An unofficial transcript showing the course(s) 'in progress' during the semester the admission period is open.
When you complete the course you must notify the TJC Nursing office through your TJC student email. You do not need to submit any documents to the TJC Nursing office. Course grades at TJC are available to the Admissions team once posted in Degree Works.
Course(s) 'In Progress' at External CollegeIf a course is 'in progress' at an external college (not at TJC), submit one of the following documents with your application:
• An unofficial transcript showing the course 'in progress' during the semester the admission period is open.
• An official document from the Registrar at the college where you are enrolled verifying the course is 'in progress' during the semester the admission period is open.
When you complete the course you must notify the TJC Nursing office through your TJC student email and include and unofficial transcript with your final grade.
You must also submit an official transcript (that includes the final grade) to the TJC Registrar's office so the course can be evaluated and posted to your TJC account.

If you apply with a prerequisite course 'in progress' you must provide proof of enrollment with your application and proof of your final grade once the course is complete.
Read the 'Prerequisite Course Requirements' section on page 10 to verify which prerequisite course(s) are approved to be 'in progress' when you apply.

A Required-Course Grade Point Average (RGPA) is calculated using the most recent grade of each prerequisite and degree required general education course(s).
The RGPA calculation does not include all completed college course credit and might be different from any GPA listed on a transcript or in Degree Works. You must meet the minimum RGPA requirement at the time you submit your application.

1. Write down your most recent grade for each course you have completed. Grades of ‘D’ and ‘F’ should be included. Grades of ‘W’ should not be included. If you have not completed a course leave the boxes blank.
2. Next to each grade, assign a ‘Grade Value’ based on the scale below: A = 4 B = 3 C = 2 D = 1 F = 0
3. Next to the ‘Grade Value’, write down the ‘Credit Hours’ for each course.
4. Then for each course, multiply the ‘Grade Value’ (0-4) by the ‘Credit Hours’.
5. This number is the ‘Grade Points’ earned for each course.
6. Add together the ‘Grade Points’ from each course, this is your ‘Total Grade Points’.
7. Add together the ‘Credit Hours’ for each course; this is your ‘Total Credit Hours’.
8. Divide your ‘Total Grade Points’ by your ‘Total Credit Hours’ to get your estimated RGPA.

If you are currently enrolled or were previously enrolled in a nursing or health science program, this could affect your eligibility to apply to TJC Nursing program.
If you did not successfully complete a nursing or health science program you must complete the Verification of Good standing process. To be in good standing means you do not have any academic, clinical and/or professional disciplinary actions while enrolled in any nursing or health science program.

If you withdrew from a nursing or health science course and you were failing the course at the time you withdrew, this is considered an unsuccessful attempt at the course.

Access the online application from the 'How to Apply' section on the Nursing website (www.tjc.edu/nursing). The application is only available during the admission period.
Submit the Online ApplicationTJC Nursing holds two admission periods each academic year. Applications must be submitted using the online application during the admission period. The online application will open at 8 a.m. on the first day of the admission period and will close at 11:59 p.m. on the last day of the admission period.
• To access the application, log in with your student email address. Do not submit an application from another students account.
• You cannot save your progress and exit the form to complete later. You must complete the form and submit it in one session.
• You can move backwards and forwards between questions before submitting your application.
• You can apply to multiple tracks, pathways and/or cohorts with one application submission.
• Supporting documents must be uploaded in PDF.• Check the box at the end of the form to receive an automatic
confirmation email once the submission is sent.• You cannot submit additional documents separately after you have
submitted the application.

At the end of the admission period, the highest qualified applicants are offered conditional acceptance into the Nursing program. Conditional acceptance means you are accepted to the program on the condition that you complete clearly defined post-admission requirements by a deadline.
If you do not complete these requirements by the deadlines provided, your offer of conditional acceptance will be withdrawn and you must reapply during the next admission period.
To be granted full admission status, conditionally accepted students must complete the following requirements:
• Attend mandatory On-Boarding Meeting Dates provided on the admission timeline at www.tjc.edu/nursing
• Complete HIPAA & OSHA Training• Negative Drug Test• Background Check (Texas Board of Nursing clearance)• CPR Certification• Tetanus Vaccination• Negative TB Test• Seasonal Flu Vaccination• Compliance with Essential Competencies
Physical Exam & Student Health History• Attend SUCCESS Camp Orientation
