NURSING EDUCATION OVERVIEW

Educational programs that prepare graduates towrite a licensing examination must be approvedby a state or provincial board of nursing.

Boards approve entry-level programs to ensure

the safe practice of nursing by setting minimumeducational requirements and guaranteeing thegraduate of the program is an eligible candidateto write a licensing examination.

In the United States, candidates must pass theNational Council Licensure Examination(NCLEX) to obtain a license to practice nursing.

In Canada, the licensure examination isadministered by the Canadian NursesAssociation Testing Service (CNATS).

In Pakistan all the Nursing institutions must be

registered with PNC, the successful qualifyingnurses are issued PNC license to practicenursing, otherwise the un-registered institutionsnurses must set in PNC licensing examination.

An LPN orLVN is trained in basic nursing skillsto provide client care under the guidance of anRN or other licensed provider.

Postgraduate programs prepare nurses topractice in various roles as advanced practiceregistered nurses (APRNs).

DIPLOMA EDUCATION

Florence Nightingale established the firstdiploma program at St. Thomass Hospital,London, in 1860. Nightingales basic principlesof nursing education were:l

ASSOCIATE DEGREE PROGRAMS

In 1951 Mildred Montag developed the blueprintfor AD programs that would produce a nursingtechnician whose scope of practice wasnarrower than that of the professional nurse and

broader than the PNs scope.l Provide general nursing care under the supervision ofbaccalaureate nurses

BACCALAUREATE PROGRAMS

The first baccalaureate program in nursing was

established at the University of Minnesota in1909 through the efforts of Dr. Richard OldingBeard.

Most graduates of baccalaureate programs

receive a bachelor of science degree in nursing(BSN).l The BSN curricula contain courses in general

education, liberal arts, and the sciences related to

nursing as well as nursing courses.l Emphasis is placed on developing critical decision-

making skills, exercising independent nursingjudgment, and acquiring professional values andresearch skills.

MASTERS PROGRAMS

The first masters education in nursing programbegan in 1899 at Teachers College in New York

The growth in graduate education was firstdriven by the need to educate qualified faculty

for BSN and other types of entry-level programs. The need for graduates prepared as

administrative personnel for management andclinical positions.

DOCTORAL PROGRAMS

There are various doctoral degrees awarded to

nurses: The doctor of philosophy (PhD), doctor of

science in nursing (DNS), doctor of education

(EdD), and doctor of public health (DPH). Graduates of these programs are often prepared

as researchers and educators to advance thediscipline and profession of nursing.

STAFF DEVELOPMENT ANDCONTINUING EDUCATION

According to the ANA (1990):l Nursing staff development is a process of orientation,

in-service education and continuing education for thepurpose of promoting the development of personnel

within any employment setting, consistent with thegoals and responsibilities of the employer. (p. 3)

In-service education is that phase of the staffdevelopment process that occurs after

orientation and supports the nurse in acquiring,maintaining, and increasing skills to fulfillassigned responsibilities.
