PENTECOST We, the body of Christ, all have a part in the plan that God has for His Church. As Paul says in his first letter to the Corinthians, “To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.” God leaves it up to us to discern what our gifts are and how to use them for the greater honor and glory of God. Some have beautiful voices and use that talent in the choir to enhance the quality of the liturgy. Others may have a compassion for the poor so they help in the Care Ministry and hand out food bags to the less fortunate. Still others may be good with people skills so they become Ministers of Hospitality. Whatever abilities that you have received from God it is your responsibility to engage your talents in a way that will bring others the joy of the Gospel and in doing so bring them closer to God. On this feast of Pentecost we celebrate the birth of the Church when the Apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit and took the Gospel into the streets. At our Baptism we also received the Holy Spirit, may we let him work within us to be agents of the Gospel as we share the good news by what we say and what we do in our lives. - Deacon Bill Watzek 370 SW 3rd St. Boca Raton FL 33432 561.392.0007 561.392.0074 Fax wWw.stjoan.org Msgr. The color of Pentecost is fiery red. This is in remembrance of the tongues of fire that hovered over the apostles in the locked room and of the powerful wind that also signaled the Holy Spirit's presence. That this was a trans-formative event for the apostles is clear. They were a band of close collaborators and friends who were praying and seeking a new purpose and direction. They were not yet convinced of their new role as witnesses to the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, their Rabbi and Master. They were unclear as to how they were to witness, where and in what capacity. Tradition suggests that they were also anxious, fearful of persecution and death.

Into this world of fear and uncertainty, the Holy Spirit descended and changed everything. The Gift of Tongues was characterized by many different languages spoken in praise of God but miraculously understood by all present as their own language. The confusion of languages that had occurred in the Tower of Babel story is now overturned by a different experience of languages that does not result in confusion but exultant praise in a miraculous harmony. This event is also a foreshadowing of the responsibility of preaching the "Good News" to peoples of every race and language that the Apostles would gradually assume. One of the most powerful sermons presented in the Acts of the Apostles is Peter's Pentecost Address. It is a crystallization of post-Resurrection Faith that is most inspirational and challenging.

"THEREFORE LET THE WHOLE HOUE OF ISRAEL KNOW FOR CERTAIN THAT GOD HAS MADE HIM BOTH LORD AND MESSIAH, THIS JESUS WHOM YOU CRUCIFIED"

Peter then goes on to invite all of his listeners to follow the New Way and have their lives changed forever.

"REPENT AND BE BAPTIZED, EVERYONE OF YOU, IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF YOUR SINS, AND YOU WILL RECEIVE THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT."

This declaration of faith and call to conversion would be echoed over and over again throughout the known world and spread like wildfire in a movement like the world had never seen before. Pentecost is often described as the "Birthday of the Church" because the preaching, witnessing, conversions and baptisms would build the early Church of community, sharing, mutual support and prayers. This is forever the model of earliest Christianity for all ages to imitate.

Pentecost reminds us that the Church is ever being energized and given new direction by the presence of the Holy Spirit. Each generation of Christians has its own set of challenges to deal with but we know that we are never alone. The Paraclete and Advocate that Jesus left us as a gift is constantly present with us. The Holy Spirit's influence is one of courage , wisdom and imagination. The impetus to think outside of the box and to take necessary risks for the Gospel and its proclamation comes from the Holy Spirit. It is a prolongation of Pentecost to every age and generation. In our Church's life and in our personal lives we need to discern, listen and follow wherever the Holy Spirit guides us. Prayer with true humility and docility opens the door for the Holy Spirit and brings us guidance and courage.

Come Holy Spirit, Come!

- Msgr. Michael D. McGraw

Summer is fast approaching. While some of us may be sitting at our desks, lazily dreaming of sunnier days ahead, others are preparing their caps and gowns for upcoming graduations.

To all the graduating seniors, I wish you all the best in your journey ahead. If your college and career plans take you far from home, there will always be a place for you here at St. Joan of Arc. If you are ever home for the holidays, please know that the doors here are always open for you. The young adult ministry, the Light, will be ready to welcome you into their group.

To all the graduating 8th graders from St. Joan of Arc, I know many of you are nervous about leaving your friends but excited as you continue your academic journeys in new schools. We will see you all again soon as we prepare for Confirmation. Everyone is encouraged to continue their spiritual journey, which started with the Edge and continues in the high school group, the SpArk. Follow the group on Facebook or Instagram @SJASpark for upcoming events and updates. Do not forget we have another beach clean up scheduled for May 26th at Boynton Beach Inlet Park!

To all the students moving on up from 5th grade to 6th grade, welcome to middle school! Now you can be a part of the youth group, the Edge! From engaging spiritual discussions to fun, social events, there are plenty of ways to get involved.

This summer while you are taking a well deserved break and vacationing, remember to schedule God in your daily schedule through prayer, volunteering, and Mass. Just because you are on summer break, does not mean a break from the Church! What’s great about the Catholic Church is that it’s universal! After all, that’s what “Catholic” means. So if you are traveling away from home, please remember to spend some time in God’s home.

Have a great summer!

Valerie Bryant SJA Youth Minister

The state-of-the-art hearing loop system will wirelessly transmit sound directly to persons with a telecoil-enabled hearing aid or cochlear implant. This will enable such persons to clearly hear speech during services while eliminating background noise. For people with diminished hearing who do not wear telecoil-enabled hearing aids a hearing loop receiver with headphones will be made available for your use.

Our cost for this system is $17,000.00

We are asking you to give us your input concerning the system. Please complete survey below and either put in collection basket or drop off at the Gift Shop or Church office during the week. Your responses will help to guide us in making our decision to offer this service.

WHAT IS SUNDAY FAMILY CATECHESIS?

"Family-centered catechetical programs are opportunities for parents to catechize their children directly, for spouses to catechize each other and for children to catechize one another and their parents” (National Directory for Catechesis #61.2).

Families will come to class together about once a month on a Sunday from September to May. While children are taught the first lesson of each textbook unit by their grade-level catechists, the parents will also attend a class that will help them teach the rest of the unit’s lessons at home. Lesson plans for each lesson in the textbook will be available to parents. Children will turn in work done at home to their Sunday catechists.

Families participating in Family Catechesis make the commitment to continue the faith formation of their children each year, from First Communion through Confirmation, to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days, and to help each other live out their Catholic faith.

Wednesday afternoon Religious Education classes will remain the traditional weekly catechist-taught classes.

THE CROWNING OF MARYThe Religious Education children who received First Communion last Saturday processed before the 10:45 AM Mass, dressed in their First Communion clothes and carrying flowers, to crown Mary.

Congratulations to all the children who received their First Holy Communion on

Saturday, May 12th. May you always stay close to Jesus and keep Him in your hearts!

The 5th Grade Tea party has quickly become an annual tradition at St. Joan of Arc. The students dress up for this afternoon party where they learn how to properly set a table, different etiquette rules, and the history of tea. Scones, cookies, and cakes were served with cream, lemon curd or strawberry jam. Students had the choice between orange blossom tea and black tea poured into porcelain teacups. This party also celebrates the end of their elementary school years and the beginning of middle school. Every parent was asked to write a letter to their child congratulating them on their achievement. Thank you, Mrs. Spencer, for coordinating such a fine party!

THE BREATH OF THE SPIRIT By Mary Katharine Deeley

When our children were toddlers, we played a game called Typhoon. It was simple—we looked intently into their eyes and then blew into their faces and said, “Typhoon.” Whether it was the breath blowing past them or the word itself, I am not sure, but they always widened their eyes, looked startled for a minute, and then started laughing.

The memory of this game comes unbidden when I read that Jesus blew on the disciples and commanded them to receive the Holy Spirit. I can imagine that their eyes widened and they looked startled for a minute. Maybe one or two of them were tempted to laugh, but the enormity of what Jesus said next sobered them quickly. There was power in the Spirit Jesus breathed out: a power to forgive sins.

The Church uses this passage, among others, to support Christ’s institution of the sacrament of reconciliation, and so it is. In our reflection, though, we shouldn’t forget that we all are called to forgiveness in our relationships with one another.

While our forgiveness is not sacramental, it’s a measure of our life in the Spirit that’s poured out on the world at Pentecost. One of our great temptations is not to forgive but hold others bound because of our anger, fear, or plain stubbornness.

Remember, though, that forgiving others frees us as much as it frees them. In forgiving, we are no longer bound by hate, resentment, or feelings of vengeance. Rather, we show ourselves transformed in Christ by this immense gift of love.

LOVING OUR HUMAN CHURCH By Fr. Thomas Richstatter, OFM

Unless you have been living under a rock, you probably know all too well that the Catholic Church is a human church—human sins, scandals, and disappointments. It makes one wonder if God couldn’t have made the Church a little less human, a little more divine. But that is not how God does things.

And as God entrusted his creation to our first parents, so Christ entrusted his Church to us, his disciples. This is the positive, amazing side of belonging to this human Church. Christ commissioned us to cause the Church to “fill the earth.” We are to make the Church catholic, universal, all-embracing—both in space (reaching to every land and culture) and in time (gracing every historical age).

What an awesome responsibility to be co-creators in God’s great plan! What trust God has in us!

RICH TRADITIONS Many cultures and historical periods have shaped the Catholic Church. There are parts of the Church that have taken root in the cultures of Byzantium and Syria. Probably most of you reading this article belong to the branch of the Church that has been highly influenced by Roman and European culture. Each Sunday we see the priest at the altar wearing Roman clothing. (Albs and chasubles were once daily clothing for a first-century Roman.) We govern our Church with a Code of Canon Law based on the Roman legal system.

From the Europe of the Middle Ages we picked up the custom of serfs bowing and kneeling before the liege lord. From court etiquette we adopted titles such as “Your Eminence,” “Your Excellency,” and “Monsignor.” And as the Church progresses through the centuries we try to select and incorporate what is good from the culture and let go of those elements that are no longer useful.

There’s the problem! Our human vision is limited: We are not always sure which elements are good and which are no longer useful. Is the requirement of celibacy for priests still helpful to the Church? Should bishops be appointed or elected?

WHEN, WHEN NOT, TO CHANGE During the past fifty years we have experienced many changes in the Mass. We know that some parts of the Mass were instituted by God and can’t be changed, while other parts of the Mass are of human origin. These human elements can be changed and indeed should be changed when they no longer help us express the meaning of the Eucharist. But what elements ought to be changed? How are they to be changed?

These important decisions God has entrusted to us. Sometimes we make wrong decisions as circumstances change or as we see situations more clearly. But isn’t that all part of being human?

Catholics believe that being human is a good thing. Our bodies are good. Creation is good. Growth and change are good. That’s why it’s great to belong to a human Church—a Church that is forever growing, developing, and maturing—a Church that is always discovering new ways to proclaim the gospel until that day when the fullness of God’s plan will be revealed in us.
