Omega-3s - DHA – Strong research demonstrates that Omega-3 supplementation from fish oil supports cognitive function. Oral Omega-3 especially from DHA have been shown to aid the structure and function of brain cells by promoting the synthesis of synaptic membranes and dendritic spines, thereby aiding neurotransmission. Overall, these studies highlight the unique and indispensable role of DHA in optimising neuronal membranes in the aged brain.

Omega-3s have also been shown to aid the learning abilities of young puppies. Other studies linked low blood Omega-3 with dog aggression indicating beneficial applications of Omega-3s throughout the entire life of your pet.

Phosphatidylserine – An amino acid derivative compound that is fat-soluble and found in high amounts in the brain, where it contributes to cognitive functioning.

Experiments with Phosphatidylserine supplemented dogs have shown an improvement in memory, learning capacity and other mental cognitive parameters.

Five most common signs of cognitive dysfunction1) Disorientation – confused behaviour in the house and wandering

around aimlessly. Pets may regularly get lost on walks or perhaps go to the wrong side when opening doors. Pets may also lose the ability to recognise people they are frequently in contact with, or other pets.

2) Decreased social interaction – pets may hide away more, especially if there are new people in the house. There may be reduced greeting behaviour and this may just be perceived by pet owners as their pet being tired or less interested or excited. There may also be increased vocalisation, or rarely, aggression towards particular situations.

3) Loss of prior housetraining – one of the most noticeable signs for pet owners. This is obviously distressing for all involved. Toilet training is a key, learned behaviour, and so can be one of the first behaviours lost with cognitive dysfunction.

4) Disturbance in sleep pattern – a key feature of cognitive dysfunction. There is an increase in total sleep, but this can often be broken in shorter periods and often pets can be awake at night, when previously they did not disturb the pet owner. Again, this can be distressing for the owner, especially if coupled with vocalisation and toileting in the house.

5) Decreased activity – dogs and cats will be less keen to exercise and less excited by toys and other previously rewarding events. Owners will sometimes describe their pets as depressed.

Ginkgo Biloba Extract – The leaf extract of Ginkgo is an antioxidant and aids the body’s own natural anti-inflammatory processes. It has been used for over 5000 years to support memory ability and hypoxia tolerance in brain cells.

B Vitamins – Some essential B Vitamins are implicated in the synthesis of brain neurotransmitters specifically Dopamine and Noradrenaline.
