Underpinning all we do is the fundamental understanding that we’re borrowing this planet. DuPont Nutrition and Biosciences recognizes that every decision we make must respect our planet and the people on it. Our mission is simple: we aim to lessen our footprint and increase our handprint - or our positive impacts on the world.
Sustainability Working toward a better world
We view the United Nations Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs) as our guiding North Star and a ‘common language’ for sustainability. It is also tool to more deeply entrench sustainability into our business model, our innovation processes, and customer value propositions.
We support all 17 Global Goals and there are seven where we believe we can make the biggest impact. We have developed a tool for evaluating the sustainability contribution of innovation projects, enabling us to prioritize those with the biggest potential to leverage the SDGs. Visit www.dupontnutritionandhealth.com/sustainability for examples on how we contribute.
Our FootprintClearly, our operation and sourcing activities have an environmental and social footprint. We relentlessly strive to reduce this - not only in our operations but also in our upstream supply chain where our sustainable sourcing program covers seaweed, wood pulp and palm oil - amongst others.
Our HandprintOur aim is to leave a positive and lasting impact on both planet and people. Our handprint grows when we enable customers to produce healthier foods and wellness options, provide solutions that combat food waste, develop enzymes that enhance animal nutrition or launch plant-based proteins with the potential to transform the food system. Outside the food space, our handprint increases through enzymes that provide cold water solutions for dish and laundry, more efficient biofuel production and textile manufacturing. Ultimately, it is through our handprint that we can make the biggest contribution to a more sustainable world.
SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS: Leaving a Positive Impact on The Planet
The greatest potential to leverage sustainability is through solutions, collaborating with customers, enabling them to achieve their sustainability goals – whether this is related to environmental, social, health or economic aspects of sustainability. We also use our passion to solve and have the industry’s broadest portfolio – from proteins to probiotics and enzymes – to help enable answers to global health and sustainability challenges.
2020 Solutions Goals:
• Reducing Customer Impacts - Reduce customers’ greenhouse gas emissions with 15 million tons CO2e annually by 2020 enabled by solutions that allow for raw material replacement, food waste reduction etc.
• Partnerships to Achieve Sustainability Goals - Establish 20 customer partnerships with key customers resulting in significant sustainability improvements.
• Nutrition, Health and Wellbeing - Promote and document N&Bs contribution to improve human health.
• Sustainable Innovations - Integrate sustainability in product & process development and complete life cycle assessment for all main product categories.

SUSTAINABLE SOURCING: Protecting Life on Land and Under Water
We have always seen the beauty in nature and how the land and sea can help create nutritious foods and wellness options. From seaweed to soy, virtually all our raw materials are bio based. Our aim is to make a step change in sustainable sourcing and build stronger relationships with our suppliers through sustainable sourcing programs.
2020 Sourcing Goals:
• Sustainable Sourcing Program – Develop and implement sustainable sourcing program for 90% of all bio-based raw materials including: palm, soy, seaweed, wood, locust bean kernels and guar. That includes: • Developing and implementing a sustainable soy
sourcing policy to drive sustainable sourcing of all soy beans and flakes.
• Sourcing 100% certified sustainable palm oil and derivatives and implementing a sustainable palm oil sourcing policy.
• Sustainability Assessment of Suppliers – Expand the scope of sustainability assessments based on SEDEX to at least 100 Tier One suppliers and contract manufacturers.
SUSTAINABLE OPERATIONS: Responsible Production for a Cooler Planet
Activities at our manufacturing sites result in a considerable footprint. We work continuously to reduce our footprint.
2020 Operations Goals:
• Energy & Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions – Increase share of renewable energy to 20% of total energy use, target elimination of coal and reduce GHG emissions with 20% per revenue (2010 baseline).
• Water Consumption – Reduce water consumption with 20% per revenue (2010 baseline) and establish water mitigation plans at high water risk sites.
• Sustainability Audits – Our manufacturing* sites go through a sustainability audit focusing on Health & Safety, Labor, Environmental practices and Business ethics.
• Waste Impact – Less than 10% waste to landfill and 10 projects on packaging, transport, and contract manufacturing that reduce impacts significantly.
*A limited number of our smallest manufacturing sites are out of scope.
Our Sustainability Strategy:The Three PillarsOur strategy covers three core areas that guide our sustainability work. By 2020, we will accomplish several goals that advance our current position as a global sustainability leader.
