Lactation or breastfeeding is a natural method of feeding an infant
From birth to the time he or she can eat solid food. It should begins
as soon as possible after birth and be fed at least 8-12 times in 24 hrs.
Breast milk is the perfect food for babies.
It provides:-
1. Ideal amount of nutrients
2. Protection from diseases
3. Easily digested
4. Helps a baby's own immune system mature faster
5. Good for mother
6. Free and save money

Baby is getting enough milk or not?
A baby who is ---* Wetting between 4 to 6 disposablediapers (6 to 8 cloths)
* 3 or 4 bowel movements in 24 hrs.

CALCIUM
-Calcium requirement for lactating mom remain
elevated as in pregnancy.
-It is necessary to choose at least 3-4 calcium rich
food daily coz feeding cause a temporary decrease
in bone mass. _ like, 3-4 glass of milk - G.L.V. (spinach)

Iron # A nursing mother should always
consume a sufficient amount of iron,which must be higher than during
pregnancy.
Because of
Infants tissue health to rebuild moms own iron reserves
Best sources are-
Bajra ,chura,whole wheat
Roasted chana,masoor dal
Soya bean
Green leafy veg.
Radish leaves, mint
Banana, kismis,water -melon

Specific foods to be avoided when nursing
Caffeine and Alcohol
Restrict :- Coffee, Tea, Caffeine, Alcohol * It enter the breast milk and negatively effect breast fed infant.
* It over stimulate the child.
* It stopping child from sleeping.
Tobacco
Restrict:- Smoking
* Nicotine and other poisons passed on to the infant
* It causes colic and vomiting
* Causes irritation of the eye, lungs,nose, throat
* Causes bronchiolitis, pneumonia, asthma etc
* Causes childhood behavior problem

OILS AND FATS
* Include 2 teaspoon vegetable oil/day,
_ sunflower oil _ mustard oil
_ olive oil etc
* Include max. 2 teaspoon (10gm) spread, _butter
_ margarine
* Include one fat rich food /day _ potato
_ cake
_pies _ chocolate etc.

Sweet/dessert
Only eat a small amount of dessert
Dont eat # More than one candy a day
# More than one bar of chocolate

* 5-7 portion of starch or starch containing product/ d
example bread,potatoes,rice ,grain,pasta etc.* whole grain products are preferable.
* size of the portion depends upon the physical
activity.

Fruits
* 3 4 portions of raw fruit / day
( 1 portion= one apple, one banana,3 plum etc)
Vegetables
* 2-3 portions of vegetable/day
( 1 portion= 100 gm raw vegetable or 2 katori cooked
vegetable)

Suggestions
About exercise :-
* Exercise just after nursing the baby
* wear athletic bra that provide good
support
Because :- Exercise before nursing
causes breast infection
About hygiene :-
* Washing your hands before nurse your baby
* After all diaper changes
* Before holding the new baby
