OUTCOMECalculate Conor Murray’s energy

expenditure requirement on a training day.

To explain the energy demands specific to rugby and why?

Design a nutrition plan for a match day including pre/ during and post match and to rationalise the macro and micro nutrients required for him during that day.

HOW METABOLISM WORKS IN THE BODY. IT IS THE BREAKING DOWN OF NUTRIENTS TO PRODUCE THE BODY WITH ENERGY. The ingestion of food Food is broken down into

particles through digestion Chain of chemical reaction

result in cross bridge connections

Results in muscle movement During exercise or training

oxygen consumption and energy expenditure go up at the same level. Energy expenditure is about 1.3 kcal per minute ( Maughan 2011)

BMR AND MET VALUE The Basal Metabolic Rate BMR or RMR is the

amount of energy that is required for our body to maintain normal bodily functions at rest.

MET metabolic equivalent task is used to reflect the energy cost of any physical activity

MET value equates to the rate of oxygen consumption of 3.5 millilitres per kilogram per minute in an adult.

The MET value of activities can be found on the Ainsworth table

Step 1 Calculate the total METs used during a 24 hour period and then find the PAL value

Step 2 PAL x BMR = EE ( Energy Expenditure)

2.654 x 2107.967= 5594.54 kcal

Step 3 BMR + EE = EER ( Estimated energy requirement) for the day

2107.967 + 5594.54

= 7702.51 kcal Energy Requirement for Conor Murray’s training day
