NYC G&T Admissions Testing

Register at DOE website for testing in October/November: http://schools.nyc.gov/Academics/GiftedandTalented/EligibilityApplications/default.htm

Testing is usually in January and February

Scores are usually reported in April Hunter College Elementary

Applicants for the September 2014 kindergarten class must be born during 2009: January 1, 2009 – December 31, 2009

Registration usually starts end of August and goes until early November – watch the website for exact dates: http://hces.hunter.cuny.edu/?m1=1&m2=1

Once you apply, you get a Hunter ID # and 3 weeks to schedule/complete testing

You’ll get a choice of 4 testers and you can only contact 1 for an appointment

Round 1 – last year’s qualifying score was 148 or higher. If your child qualifies, he or she goes on to round 2 where more testing takes place. TestingMom members – if your child qualifies, check with us on what happens next.

Test can only be given in English. Private School – Sample Questions Verbal: Vocabulary 1) What is honey? (concrete concept) 1 point: It’s sweet and thick. 2 points: it’s sweet and thick and golden and bees make it. 2) What does “scared” means? (abstract concept) 1 point: Afraid 2 points: It’s when you’re afraid like if someone yells “boo” or you think there’s a monster in your closet. 3) What is this?

Verbal: Similarities 1) Sisters and mothers are both what? (girls/female relatives) 2) Angry and sad are both what? (feelings) 3) Which one on the bottom is a ball like the ones on top?

Verbal: Information 1) What part of your body makes a smile? (mouth) 2) Which animal barks? (dog)

Verbal: Comprehension (standards of behavior/understanding of her world) 1) Why shouldn’t you run with scissors? (you could get hurt/scissors are sharp) 2) Why do you go to the doctor? (to help you if you’re sick; to give you vaccinations so you don’t get sick) 3) Point to the child who is helping around the house. (bottom left)

Many subtests are similar to WPPSI-IV or ERB o Matrix Questions o Vocabulary Questions o Verbal Reasoning o Pattern Blocks (more similar to Mighty Mind, but same task of copying a

pattern) o Comprehension and Information

Visual arithmetic is similar to Arithmetic Reasoning on the OLSAT

Basic puzzles that fit in forms Some different items include: Last Word Subtest Child is asked a question like, “Does milk go in the oven?” After the child answers the questions, he is asked what the last word of the question was. [oven] Memory for Sentences or Numbers Child is told a sentence or a series of numbers and asked to repeat it exactly. Shell Game Three opaque cups. A ball is placed under one cup. They are switched around. Where is the ball? Block Tapping Two rows of blocks. Tester taps different blocks in sequence. Child has to copy the block tapping sequence. Patterning Child extends a bead pattern. Or child sees a bead pattern, the tester then messes it up, and the child recreates it from memory. Position and Direction Blocks are set in front of child. Tester asks child to add a block on top, below, between, etc. other blocks. Procedural Knowledge Child is shown a picture of a common item like scissors, a hammer, or a pencil. They must “act out” what you are supposed to do with it.

Relativity Child must demonstrate knowledge of concepts of relativity. Which box shows the longest thing? (snake)

Verbal Absurdities Child must explain what is silly or impossible about a sentence. “My baby brother drove me to the movies.” Object Sorting Child is given discs with pictures of many items – they must group the items into categories (i.e. fruit, transportation, clothing, vegetables, etc.) Visual Absurdities Child must explain what is silly or impossible about a picture.
