This past April, New York University lost a wonderful member of its community. L. Jay Oliva, my friend and mentor and the Skirball Center’s founder and executive producer, passed away just weeks before he was to celebrate the conclusion of our center’s 10th season. During the past

decade, Dr. Oliva took great pride in the diverse arts programming offered at NYU Skirball. He instilled in those around him a dedication to embrace the potential of the performing arts as a vital and transformative part of the human experience. He was an advocate for discovery, never letting a special moment in life pass by. In that spirit, and in his memory, I present our 2014-2015 season.This season we introduce a new partnership with the unequaled SHAKESPEARE’S GLOBE from London, salute the return of the iconic JOSHUA LIGHT SHOW, and further our commitment as a vanguard

for the circus art form with CIRQUE ALFONSE and the first INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY

CIRCUS EXPOSURE. In 2015, we turn our attention to the VISIONS + VOICES: GERMANY

including a New York Premiere from THE GOB SQUAD presented in association with our friends at The Public Theater. We welcome back the legendary MUMMENSCHANZ and celebrate the arrival of the critically-acclaimed BALLETCOLLECTIVE and the NEW YORK GILBERT

& SULLIVAN PLAYERS. And, of course, we serve as a platform for NYU’s incredible students and faculty, and continue to present audience favorites: the BIG RED CHAIR FAMILY SERIES

and NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE.Through it all, we cultivate audiences for the future as the custodians of creativity and innovation; we sustain Dr. Oliva’s original vision for the Skirball Center as a centerpiece of the University and a gateway to connect as a community; and we offer opportunities for dialogue, discovery, and delight. Members of She She Pop, all of whom were raised in West Germany, meet with their contemporaries from the former East, rummaging around memories and exchanging personal stories surrounding letters, private diaries, music and photographs. Nostalgic conversations, both humorous and profound, reveal the ideological divide between two great mid-twentieth century worldviews.

Inspired by Spanish novelist, poet and playwright Miguel de Cervantes’ 17th-century masterpiece Don Quixote, the musical tells a story rich in chivalry, romance and idealism.Not only is Man of La Mancha a classic, but it is also one that remains close to the heart of NYU. After all, the New York premiere took place several blocks away at the former ANTA Washington Square Theatre on West 4th Street in 1965.

RANDY WESTON AFRICAN RHYTHMS ORCHESTRA CELEBRATES JAMES REESE EUROPE AND HARLEM HELLFIGHTERS Randy Weston and his African Rhythms Orchestra celebrates James Reese Europe and the 369th Regiment of World War I—also known as the “Harlem Rattlers.” In 1918, Lieutenant James Reese Europe, an American ragtime and early jazz bandleader, arranger and composer, made military and music history by being the first African American to lead troops into battle, and spread the ‘’jazz germ’’ throughout the European continent.
