Objective: To teach the literary term symbolism. Writers often use
symbols to give extra meaning to the work. A symbol can be an
object, character, or event whose significance in any writing is
greater than it first appears. After reading The Grandfather by
Gary Soto, the students were asked to reminisce about someone who
means a great deal to them and list characteristics of that
individual. These traits were then positioned on a tree (strong and
