“BEHOLD THE LAMB OF GOD” JOHN 1:36 A month ago, I spoke about why it is not right to leave Mass immediately after receiving Holy Communion. A number of parishioners asked me to put this into writing so that they can share the information with their family (please note that the following comment is not aimed at those who have medical conditions or very special circumstances and need to leave early). Let us recall what the Roman Missal teaches from the procession for the reception of Holy Communion to the conclusion of the Mass: As people receive Holy Communion, the communion chant/song is sung. The unity of voices of the faithful echo the unity the Eucharist brings. All are invited to spend time in silent prayer of thanksgiving while the procession finishes. Then, the presider invites people: “Let us Pray.” This Prayer after Communion, which asks that the benefits of the Eucharist will remain active in our daily lives, brings the Communion Rite to an end and transitions into the Concluding Rites of the Mass. During the Concluding Rites, announcements may be made (if necessary). The celebrant then blesses the people assembled invoking the Triune God: "May almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit." After the blessing, the deacon dismiss-es the people. In fact, the dismissal gives the liturgy its name. The word "Mass" comes from the Latin word, " Missa." At one time, the people were dismissed with the words "Ite, missa est" (literally meaning "Go, she—meaning you, the Church—has been sent"). The word "Missa" is related to the word "missio," the root of the English word "mission." The liturgy does not simply come to an end. When the assembly responds: “Thanks be to God,” it is a gratitude to the Lord for sending us all forth to bring the fruits of the Eucharist to the world. Now, let us return to the Prayer after Communion which concludes the Communion Rite. The words of the Prayer last week, for the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time, were especially beautiful: “Make partakers of Christ through these Sacraments, we humbly implore your mercy, Lord, that, conformed to his image on earth, we may merit also to be his coheirs in heaven. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. R. Amen.” Why wouldn’t you want to remain and ask to be “coheirs in heaven” with Christ whom you received into your soul in Holy Communion? Simply put, when someone invites you to their home for a meal, you wouldn’t leave the home of the kind host without an expression of gratitude. At Mass, God invites us to the “wedding feast of the Lamb” and leaving right after receiving the Body and Blood of Christ, without a profound expression of gratitude to the Lord of heaven and earth, who dwelt in you in the most humble way, is blatantly disrespectful. I pray that parishioners and visitors give some serious thought to this. Friends, the recent PEW study results indicate that only 1/3 of Catholics believe in the Real Presence of the Lord. We all need to do our part in witnessing to the very “source and summit of Christian Life” the Eucharist. I firmly believe that the first step in this witness to the Lord is placing Sunday Eucharist as the top priority in the week for your family. Then, from there talk to your family members about the proper respect due to the Real Presence: fasting one hour before the Eucharist, frequent confession in preparation of the reception of Holy Communion, and spending time before the Real Presence in Eucharistic Adoration. “O Sacrament Most Holy, O Sacrament Divine, all praise and honor be every moment Thine.”
Amen. Father Lam [email protected]

S T J OHN P AUL I I M ISSION S TATEMENT United in Christ through the Sacrament of the Eucharist, the welcoming parish of St. John Paul II is to
become His hands and feet: His hands by reaching out and serving one another and His feet
by journeying together on the narrow path of our faith that leads us closer to Christ.

Bishop Robert Barron’s
7 DEADLY SINS,
7 L IVELY VIRTUES
Starting the week of Sept. 9 Based on Dante’s writings, the
seven deadly sins correspond to
the seven levels of Dante’s Mt.
Purgatory. Pride, envy, anger,
sloth, gluttony, avarice, and lust
are all presented as patterns of
dysfunction within us that lead
to unhappiness. Bishop Barron
shows us how to counteract
these seven sinful patterns
through a conscious process of
opposition, which are the
“seven lively virtues." The seven
lively virtues offer antidotes to
each sin and help set us on the
right path to healing and happi-
ness.
The class schedule is still being
developed. Watch next week’s
bulletin for more details!

han welcome letters from pa-

Saint John Paul II Parish Fiscal Year End Report The Finance Council would like to thank the Parish family for their stewardship of time,
talent and treasure. The following is a summary of the parish financial statement July 1,
2018-June 30, 2019.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE FISCAL YEAR
Growing in God’s Merciful Love Capital Stewardship Campaign and Construction Up-
date: With gratitude to the Lord, we are preparing for the Dedication of Church and
Altar on December 15, 2019. The campaign has been a wonderful blessing to the
parish and your financial sacrifice has brought us to this point in history. The goal for
our Campaign was $2 million: $1 million from parishioners and $1 million from outside-
the-parish. As of August 19, 2019, we have received $933,357.41 in pledges from
parishioners and $602,214.00 in pledges from outside the parish. We have used the
$1,179.118.75 received in payments, to pay for project invoices. Please fulfill your
pledge commitment as soon as possible. If you are new to the parish, we ask you to
join us on this journey; pledge cards are available in the narthex.
Construction Loan Update: As of August 19, 2019, we have drawn $2,562,919.14 from the
Diocesan Saving and Loan Program to pay for the construction invoices of the new
church. Currently, we are paying interest-only on this construction loan in the
amount of $6,265.92/month. We anticipate our total loan will be 4Million. Once the
construction is completed, the Diocese will convert the loan into a mortgage and
our monthly payment (interest and principle) will be determined. Your faithful stew-
ardship and continued pledge payments will allow the parish to meet our monthly
payment schedule. Thank you.
2019 Catholic Services Appeal (CSA): This annual appeal funds many ministries within the
11-counties of the Diocese of Grand Rapids. As of August 19, 2019, we have re-
ceived $51,651.41pledges towards our assessment of $58,457 with 58% of households
responding. If you have not responded to the campaign, we ask you to respond by
the weekend of September 22. Turn in the pledge card even if you cannot finan-
cial contribute this year. It saves us time and effort of following up. Remember
when one gives to CSA, one is reminded of a sense of belonging to the universal
Church, a communion of believers that goes beyond the confines and boundaries
of a local parish. Update on the Alternate Housing for our Pastor: The Bishop granted permission to secure
a modest rental for Father Lam until the rectory can be built on the grounds of our
parish. We are happy to report that we found a modest duplex, located in Cedar
Springs and he moved into the duplex in June of this year.
Budget Offertory: This fiscal year is filled with excitement and opportunities. With the an-
ticipated loan indicated above, our pastor has asked us to predict the monthly pay-
ment and budget income to cover expenses. We propose the budget with the total
offertory to be $537,500.00 with weekly contributions (online and envelopes) in the
amount of $10,336.00. We want one week’s offertory during each month to pay for
the loan and the remaining weeks to support the ministries and the work of our won-
derful community of faith. It is a challenge, but we firmly believe all will rise to the
task. Your contribution is important to work of the church, as we are all called to be
the hands and feet of Christ. Thank you for your generosity and faithful stewardship!

Anointing of the Sick I:
The Mystery of Illness
We get hurt. We wear out. The lungs, the eyes, the
memory, and any of the many limbs and organs that
compose us break or ache. Gloom comes over us then:
pity for ourselves, sorrow, depression, anger. But hope
can come, too, and courage, and sometimes peace.
All of this is marked and celebrated in the rites of our
tradition. With a word and a deed, with touch and
breath and spit and mud, Jesus heals those who ail. In
every place and time, we who are the church remember and tell stories
of healing, anoint the sick with oil and share the one bread even with
those who cannot assemble for Mass. Thus the sick and the healthy, the
homebound and the spry, saints and sinners are made one and remain
one, a single body of many parts.
Anyone who is seriously ill can be anointed, including the elderly who be-
come weaker, even if no illness is present; those waiting for surgery when a
serious condition is the reason for the operation; sick children who have
sufficient use of reason to be helped by the celebration; and those who
are unconscious or who have lost the use of reason, provided that they
probably would have asked for the sacrament had they the use of their
faculties. Furthermore, many forms of mental illness are now known to be
serious. So the mentally ill may be anointed, provided that they will be
helped and not harmed by the rite. If you have questions, consult a priest
or other parish leader.
The most complete celebration of the sacrament is a communal one, a
celebration in which those to be anointed are surrounded and supported
by other members of the Christian community, whether at home, or in the
house of the church (for those who can leave their beds and come here).
In song and in silence, with scriptures and prayers, we strengthen the
bonds of love and faith that are stronger than the most lethal disease and
more powerful even than death.

Anointing Of The Sick
September 14 & 15 Following Masses In the Church's Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, through the ministry of the
priest, it is Jesus who touches the sick to heal them from sin – and sometimes
even from physical ailment. His cures were signs of the arrival of the Kingdom
of God. The core message of his healing tells us of his plan to conquer sin and
death by his dying and rising.
The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the
point of death to receive the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the seri-
ous nature of the illness is sufficient.
When the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is given, the hoped-for effect is
that, if it be God's will, the person be physically healed of illness. But even if
there is no physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual
healing by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit's gift of peace and
courage to deal with the difficulties that accompany serious illness or the
frailty of old age. (USCCB)
