If this is how we understand the passages, then when Jesus said “I am the way … no one comes to the Father, but by me”, this may mean that the way to God is to become one with God, as Jesus did. It may mean that we do not get to God through dogma or doctrine, but rather through mystical union with God, an experience shared by mystics of many religions throughout history. OPENING HYMN NCH 292 Breathe on me, Breath of God by Robert Jackson, alt. Edwin Hatch CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 130 and John 6:35 Dave: Out of the depths I cry to you, O God: Many: We hunger for the bread of life, O Jesus, and we thirst for you, O God. O God, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications! We hunger for the bread of life, O Jesus, and we thirst for you, O God. There is forgiveness with you and I wait for you O God, my soul waits. We hunger for the bread of life, O Jesus, and we thirst for you, O God. In your words I hope. My soul waits for you, God, more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning. We hunger for the bread of life, O Jesus, and we thirst for you, O God. PRAYER OF INVOCATION Dave: God of Healing and Transformation, we hunger and thirst for your abundant life. We bring you our sorrow and ask for the bread of joy. We bring you our despair and ask for the bread of hope. We bring you our weariness and ask for the bread of inspiration. Meet us here. We need the bread of heaven to sustain us for our journey to find our way, that we may be one with you. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen. ANTHEM Visions by Stevie Wonder FIRST READING 1 Kings 19: 4-8 But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: "It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am no better than my ancestors." 5 Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said to him, "Get up and eat." 6 He looked, and there at his head was a cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. 7 The angel of the LORD came a second time, touched him, and said, "Get up and eat, otherwise the journey will be too much for you." 8 He got up, and ate and drank; then he went in the strength of that food

SECOND READING John 6: 35, 41-51Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life.Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never bethirsty. 41 Then the Jews began to complainabout him because he said, "I am the breadthat came down from heaven." 42 They weresaying, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How canhe now say, 'I have come down from heaven'?"43 Jesus answered them, "Do not complainamong yourselves. 44 No one can come to meunless drawn by the Father who sent me; and Iwill raise that person up on the last day. 45 It iswritten in the prophets, 'And they shall all betaught by God.' Everyone who has heard andlearned from the Father comes to me. 46 Notthat anyone has seen the Father except theone who is from God; he has seen the Father.47 Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes haseternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Yourancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, andthey died. 50 This is the bread that comesdown from heaven, so that one may eat of itand not die. 51 I am the living bread that camedown from heaven. Whoever eats of this breadwill live forever; and the bread that I will givefor the life of the world is my flesh."
