Texas longhorns
• Texas longhorns were descendants of cattle brought over by the Spanish. The longhorns were left alone to survive in the wilds of northern Mexico and southern Texas while the men went away to fight each other in the Civil War. Nature converted the once domesticated animal into a lean and hardy breed, fully capable of defending itself against most predators with its long horns and sharp hooves.

Dear Lone Star Bank,
As a time depositor at the Lone Star Bank this letter is to request a loan. This year’s wild fires and draught have caused us to fall on hard times please consider out request.
The Circle L Ranch would like to request a $3,000 loan for the purchase of 1,000 cattle. Our plan is to purchase the cattle for $3,000 in Texas, and sell them for $30,000 in Kansas. Upon return we will pay the loan amount in full. Thank you for the opportunity for future business.
The Circle L Ranch has been in business for several years and is a part of the community. If we are able to secure the loan we will be able to continue our business and grow with the rest of the community.
Sincerely,
The Circle L Ranch Magnolia, Texas

Barb wire
How could a simple steel thread and some wooden posts change the open range and lead to warfare? A smooth thread of steel had no effect, but when barbs were added to it, the open range in Texas came to an end. In this activity, you will learn more about the history and development of barbed wire.
Barbwire Advertisement
• In your ranch group, you are to read the information on the history of barbed wire. After you have read the information you will answer questions, cooperatively, on the website and print your answers. Each ranch group will then work on a persuasive advertisement of your "own" barbed wire for your ranch. Be sure to describe what the barbed wire looks like, how it helps farmers and ranchers, and what you will name it.
