Skill: Visualizing Equivalent Fractions • •
Dear Families,
It is important for children to understand one of the most basic concepts in the studyof fractions: equivalent fractional amounts. Without understanding this concept, your child may have difficulty moving beyond addition and subtraction of fractionsthat have like denominators,
This homework asks your child to represent fractions by shading parts of a rectangle. The goal is for your child to describe how the fractions are equivalent based on whatshe or he notices about the shaded rectangles.
Your child will also need to create some visual representations of fractions. Pleasehelp your child to make the divisions in the rectangles relatively accurate. That willhelp her or him better see the equivalence. Also, reinforce fraction concepts by usingthe terms “numerator” and “denominator” where appropriate. The denominator isthe numeral written under the fraction bar and tells the number of parts a whole isdivided into. The numerator is the numeral written above the bar. It tells the numberof parts of the whole that are being counted.
Sample Problem
( thisin JLook at the fractions below and notice that each denominatoris the numeral 6. These rectangles have been divided into sixequal parts. Look again at the fractions and notice the numerator.Shade each rectangle to represent the fraction.

Rain Sizes
Rain comes in various sizes. Some rain is as small as a mist.It tickles your face with surprises,And tingles as if you’d been kissed.
Some rain is the size of a sprinkleAnd doesn’t put out all the sun.You can see the drops sparkle and twinkle,And a rainbow comes out when it’s done.
Some rain is as big as a nickelAnd comes with a crash and a hiss.It comes down too heavy to tickle,It’s more like a splash than a kiss.
When it rains the right size and you’re wrapped inYour rainctothes, it’s fun out of doors. But run home before you get trapped inThe big rain that raffles and roars.
