From Father Mike
Today is one of those strange Sundays in which a solemnity replaces the
regular Sunday celebration. So instead of the readings and prayers for the
Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we commemorate today the Nativity of John the
Baptist. As you may have noticed, this is the time of year that we experience the
longest hours of daylight here in the northern hemisphere. From this marking of the
summer solstice until the end of December, the sun not only decreases in the
amount of time it is out each day, but it also decreases in its height in the sky. This
natural phenomenon echoes the words of John the Baptist himself, where he
proclaims in chapter 3 of John’s gospel, “He must increase; I must decrease.”
Today’s gospel from Luke reminds us that John was the one to announce the
coming of Jesus to the people, the last of the prophets to foretell the Messiah. He
was also one of the first of his disciples. This miracle child of Elizabeth and
Zechariah has a key position in salvation history, which culminated in his brave
death after standing up to Herod and his immoral life. I wonder if this year is as
good as any to have this solemnity fall on a Sunday and remind us more to invoke
the intercession and inspiration of St. John during an era in which our society
needs the clear voice of the church to proclaim what is the truth and to call us all
back to making God the priority in our life.
Me
