INSTRUMENTATION

l l l l l l

Gulf Mk III Airborne Magnetometer

This is a saturable core fluxgate magnetometer with an accuracy of approximately l gamma.

The magnetometer head consists of two saturable core orienting fluxgates whose axes are at right angles to one another. The axis of the measuring fluxgate is normal to the plane containing the two orienting flux gates .

In operation the orienting fluxgates are main tained by servo-motors in a position of minimum coupling with the earth's magnetic field; the measuring fluxgate is then in a position of maximum coupling with the earth's field.

The detecting elements and servo-notors were housed in a "stinger" projected to the rear of the aircraft.

Output from the magnetometer was recorded in analog form in red ink on a moving chart paper. Operating range was 600 gammas across a ^hart width of 10 inches. Chart speed was six inche? per minute.

A dual frequency airborne electromagnetometer with primary frequencies operated simultaneously at 400 cycles per second and 2300 cycles per second. This unit has a transmitted power of 300 watts at 400 cycles and 150 watts at 2300 cycles.

Coil configuration is such that the transmitting coil axis is vertical with the coil mounted on pylons along the main plane of aircraft and extending to a horizontal bar at the fin.

The receiving coil axis is horizontal, in line wihh the flight path of the aircraft and is mounted in a "bird" towed behind the aircraft by means of a 500-foot cable. While in operation the detecting coil is located approximately 165 feet below and 453 feet behind the trans mitting coil centre.

Phase displacement is recorded in degrees of the quadrature component of the secondary field with respect to applied primaries of 400 and 2300 cycles per second.

The maximum noise level is 0.1 degree.

The type of display or recording is an analog record presented with red ink showing the 400 cycle resoonse and green ink the 2300 cycle response.

The reading range of the 400 cycle response is 5 degrees across a four inch chart width and 2300 cycle response is 10 degrees across a four inch chart width.

l l l l l l l l

This camera used a 35 m.m. film size

and was operated in a discrete frame mode. The

frame size is 28 m.m. lateral by 25 m.m. longitudinal.

The focal length is 18.5 m.m. The resulting lateral

coverage was 1.5 times the terrain clearance and

longitudinal coverage equal to the terrain clearance.

Each frame was numbered by a prism system which exposed

"veeder" counter numbers on the side of the frame at

the moment of exposure. Co-incident with every tenth

exposure a fiducial pulse was imprinted on all aerial

recording chargs.

Interval between exposures was 2.1 seconds.

SURVEY PROCEDURE

"V-iS'-

tS^;;; '

s-;-

All instrument calibrations were checked and adjusted immediately before and/or after take-off, and checked for normal function, e.g., pen alignment, auto matic stepping, standardization and degree of noise. Assuming all systems were functioning satisfactorily, the flight would proceed following predetermined flight lines marked on uncontrolled mosaics at a scale of l inch to 660 feet, at the predetermined separation.

The aircraft followed a systematic predetermined pattern of flight lines and tie-lines at an average elevation of 450 feet.

The position of the aircraft was recorded by a vertically mounted camera; there was no significant lag between any instrument and the recorded position. Every time the camera fired, a reference mark was printed on all records and numbered to correspond with the film frame number.

The electromagnetic system detector head was in a towed bird, the controls and recorder being mounted in the aircraft with the camera, radio altimeter, magnet ometer and Spectrometer.

The flight produces positioning film, duly pro cessed, magnetometer, electromagnetic, radio altimeter and Spectrometer as continuous records with appropriate frame numbers and field annotations, plus an operator's Daily Flight Report.

The track of the aircraft is recovered on the photographic mosaics by examination of the film; prominent features, i.e., roads, lake-shore, etc., are used for the transposition.

The intersections of tie and flight lines areaccurately determined on film and transferred to therecords. The frame numbers of the individual plottedpoints relocated on the mosaic are identified on each record.

The flight line network is divided into con veniently sized circuits and from one intersection as reference, the magnetic closure error around each circuit is determined and distributed uniformly around each circuit such that the correction applied to the magnetic baseline results in a uniform datum of all these magnetometer records throughout the area; this is the datum used for contouring. If the flight lines are very short a single control or tie- line is used to apply a constant datum to all lines assuming zero drift.

The electronagnetic record is baselined with res pect to the local background level. The Spectrometer is baselined with respect to local background over water.

The data for each survey are individually trans ferred to separate intercept tapes; the data transferred

consist of the plotted fiducial point and the intercept of the predetermined contour interval with the trace, and the position and values of high and lows.

The intercepted data are transferred to the flight line plot by linearly interpolating between plotted fiducial points. The transferred data are then contoured, and subsequently fair drawn.

Final maps were compiled at a scale of 660 '/l".

INTERPRETATION

Gamma Radiation Spectrometer Survey

(a) GeneralOver most of the areas covered in this survey

the total radiation count (all radiation above 0.90 M.e.v.) varied smoothly between 300 and 500 counts per second. The spectrometer maps show values above 200 c.p.s. which is an assumed background value. This variation is due in part to the difference in the natural radiation of the different rock types underlying the survey area and to changes from exposed to drift covered rock.

The uranium channel measures th*1 amount ofradiation between the energy levels of 1.63 and 1.89 M.e.v. in which range lies the highly radio active uranium daughter product, Bismuth 214.

The uranium radiation count over the survey areas was a rapidly fluctuating response, generally ranging from O to 6 counts per second. The criterion for selecting meaningful anomalies was (a) a well defined increase over a short distance of at least twice the normal fluctuation and (b) a corresponding increase in the uranium to thorium ratio, which is normally about 1.25 to 1.

(b) Township No. 162

Over the land areas of this claim block the tota] count radiation field varies smoothly from 225 to 350 c.p.5. above the assumed background of 200 c.p.s. The uranium channel showed an average count of 3 c.p.s. with a normal fluctuation of about 2 c.p.s. Occasional peak values reached 6 c.p.s. Using the standard criteria no anomalies which could represent deposits of uranium minerals were found in this survey area.

1. Gamma Radiation Spectrometer Survey (Continued)

(c) Mississag: \rea0\er the land areas of this claim block tv total

count radiation field varies smoothly from 300 to 500 c.p.s, At one location south east of Woodrow Lake (sheet No. 1) a well defined anomaly on a total count rises above 500 c.p.s. which is about l*j times the normal background. It is an unusual fact that none of the other three element channels show this anomaly and this indicates the anomaly must be of some other energy level lower than 1.46 M.e.v.

The uranium radiation field is generally a smooth 4 i 2 c.p.s. in the area covered by sheet 3 but rises to about 7 ± 3 c.p.s. to the north on sheets l and 2. In the northern area of higher activity six anomalies have been found which are significant according to the standard criteria and are labelled from A to F on the spectrometer sheets. All of them are pure uranium anomalies with no thorium contribution. However, all are just barely above the average noise level and cannot be considered as par ticularly attractive anomalies. It is felt they warrant further investigation either by a helicopter detail survey or a ground inspection.

2. Electromagnetic Survey

(a) GeneralThe electromagnetic method is primarily a search

tool for subsurface electrical conductors such as massive sulphide deposits. Unfortunately it also responds well to graphitic sediments and to a lesser degree, conductive overburden. A measure of the conductivity of the anomalous body is the ratio of the low frequency to high frequency response and this is referred to in the following text as the ratio. The shape of the anomaly also plays an important part in the interpretation and a coincident magnetic anomaly will indicate magnetic minerals such as pyrrhotite or magnetite which often occur with base-metal sulphides.

(b) Township No. 162

The entire claim block showed virtually no E.M. response beyond very weak overburden conductivity indications on the high frequency trace. No anomalies characteristic of bedrock conductors were found.

(c) Mississagi River Area

North of the White River a broad zone of medium E.M. response was found. It had- a low ratio and no magnetic response. It is interpreted to be a zone of conductive overburden or perhaps a weakly conductive series within the Gowganda formation which underlies the area. Several sharp, low intensity but high ratio peaks to the west of this region are caused by a power line.

The western part of Sheet 3 contains a number of conductive zones of moderate response with very high ratios. From the technical point of view these anomalies indicate high conductivity but a number of factors suggest they are, in fact, spurious. These are (a) the local rock structure is west northwest whereas all of these anomalies are elongated north south along the flight line. (b) Control

Electromagnetic Survey (Continued)

(c) Mississagi River Area (Continued)Line F crosses a large anomaly labelled B, just west ofEakeu Lake and shows no response. (c) Anomaly C about1/3 of a mile west of Gladstone Lake is seen only onLine 559 and not on the two adjacent lines which are within00 feet. This canrot be explained by sub-surface con

ductors but is more likej.y due to some interference, either iji^e^naj[.-or-^xj^rjial,^jwhile the aircraft was on that flight line. In addition there are no coincident magnetic anomalies to support the E.M. anomalies.

*

Two strong but low ratio anomalies were foundat the south boundary near the Mississagi Rive" which are near a power line. The western anomaly labelled A has a fair ratio and its shape is characteristic of a steeply dipping dike-shaped conductor striking east west. However it coincides directly with the power line which may be the cause. Furthermore there is no magnetic anomaly to support the i interpretation of a ground conductor. The eastern anomaly (D) , has a lovrer ratio and is more like a broad overburden response. Its highest intensity lies at the power line and it is believed most likely to have been caused by both the power line and overburden.

A number of weak E.M. anomalies lie along the Cobden River near the south boundary of the survey area. These are all of low ratio and amplitude, have no magnetic response, and are •uterpreted as caused by wet soil con ditions along the river bank. A high ratio north-west trending anomaly is seen near the east boundary in Sheet No. 3. This is clearly caused by the power line with which it coincides.

?"v; ; . 3. Magnetic Survey^f '

(a) General-"* v ' ' - ' "

" The magnetic information taken in a survey of l^;( this type has three main uses. It is used in conjunction " with the E.M. information to determine if E.M. anomalies

; are caused in part by magnetic minerals such as pyrrhotite If or magnetite. It is used as a direct means for detecting

commercial deposits of iron, and it may be used to map geological boundaries in areas where the different rock types have a different magnetic susceptibility.

B

(b) Township No. 162

The magnetic pattern shows a general pattern west-northwest trend which probably reflects the inter bedded sediments which jonstitute the underlying Gowganda formation. No strong anomalies which might represent iron deposits of potential interest are present.

i

l

i i i i i i i

The area has been mapped in detail in 1962 and its geology is shown at a scale of 1/4 mile to the inch in the O.D.M. map 2027. Numerous diabase dikes cut the area and it is somewhat surprising to find that none of them appear to have a magnetic response in this survey. This was confirmed by positioning them on the aeromagnetic map. Several faults cross the area but these have little or no magnetic expression.

le) Mississagi River Area

The Nipissing diabase formation cuts through the survey area in a general west northwest direction. This diabase is relatively magnetic and the magnetic results show its location clearly. Its location has been inter preted and is shown on the total magnetic field map as Unit #17. The Flack Lake fault is a major fracture in the

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

'

1C1 '"•pi-iiiiiiiiiiii

(a) Spectrometer Survey

It is recommended that the six anomalies detected in the survey be investigated further either by heli copter detail survey using a spectrometer or by ground party equipped with a scintillation counter. No other anomalies were found in either area worthy of additional investigation.

(b) Electromagnetic SurveyAnomalies A and B found on Sheet 3 of the

Mississagi River area have good conductivity qualities but are suspected of being caused by external interference such as power lines. It is recommended that these anomalies be inspected briefly on the ground to determine their cause. Care must be taken to choose a ground survey instrument which has maximum rejection of sixty cycle radiation and its harmonics.

All other anomalies found in both areas fall into the category of broad overburden anomalies or power line anomalies, and no further work is recommended on these.

(c) Magnetic Survey

No anomalies of economic interest were found in the survey and no follow-up investigation is recommended.
