Our recent assembly was entertaining and very educational as our Year

4/5 students from Room 19 taught us about Matter. They sang, danced

and acted out what Solid, Liquid and Gas particles look like and how

they behave. The audience was impressed by the talented performers

and their inspiring costumes. Well done, Year 4/5.

We were also joined by colourful Pru and Karen Beswick launching

School Banking with the support of our dedicated coordinator, Gail

McCahon. After the assembly many parents opened accounts for their

children which indicates this will be a well utilised service helping to

develop regular saving behaviour. If you would like to know how to open

an account for your child please pick up an banking pack from the school

office. Remember: School Banking is every Wednesday from 8.15am – 8.45am in the library.

REPORTING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT The relationship between the home and the school plays a very important part in a child’s education and two-way communication is a critical factor in this partnership. As part of the school’s strategy to keep parents informed about their child’s achievement the following information will be distributed this term:

Kindergarten Reports - a report form and a selection of work will be provided for each Kindergarten

child. These reports will be distributed on Monday 16 June 2014 (beginning of Week 8).

Pre-primary Reports – the school will be issuing a report for each Pre-primary student using the new

form provided by the Department of Education. The report will include information about a child’s achievement, attitude, behaviour and effort during Semester 1. These reports will be distributed on Monday 16 June 2014 (beginning of Week 8).

Student Achievement Reports – a report using the Department form with information about a child’s

achievement, attitude, behaviour and effort during Semester 1 will be provided to each child in Year 1 – 7 on Monday 30 June 2014 (beginning of Week 10).

In Western Australia, student achievement in the learning areas is reported on a five-point scale for all years from Pre-primary to Year 10.

Pre-primary, Year 1 and Year 2 achievement will be reported using grade descriptors and Years 3 to 7 achievement will be reported using letter grades. The grade descriptions will be:

A – Excellent B – High C – Satisfactory D – Limited E - Very Low

Effort in the learning areas will be reported using the same scale as ratings of Attitude, Behaviour and Effort and appear as a statement e.g. Consistently/often/sometimes/seldom demonstrates appropriate effort in this learning area.

Pre-primary to Year 7 Student Reports will include a comment in the English and Mathematics learning areas, together with a general comment.

Pre-primary to Year 7 Learning Area Grade Reports which show the distribution of grades e.g. A/Excellent, B/High, across a year group for each learning area will be made available to interested parents. Please register your interest in receiving a Learning Area Grade Report for your child at reception. The Learning Area Grade Reports will be posted to parents.

Parents are welcome to contact the teacher to arrange a meeting if they have any questions or concerns after reading their child’s report. Often an email to the relevant staff member is the easiest way to communicate your concern and availability for a meeting.

SUCCESSFUL BOOK FAIR

We had another very successful Book Fair last week with an amazing $3400 worth of books and accessories sold. This has allowed us to select $1020 worth of books for the school library.

Congratulations to Ms Helen Plange for coordinating the Book Fair and to everyone who supported this activity which encourages children to read.

2014 FOODBANK SCHOOL APPEAL IS COMING Monday 9 June – Friday 13 June 2014

Every student is encouraged to donate a can of food to this community cause.

Photocopies of birth certificates, immunisation history statement and proof of residential address (i.e. rates notice or up-to-date utilities account) are required with the application form.

only be made at ONE GOVERNMENT SCHOOL.

Pre-Primary 2015 Children born 01/07/09 to 30/06/10

STUDENT DISCO

The excitement is building as the disco draws closer and DJ Jamie begins preparing the music for the night.

DATE: Thursday 5 June 2014 TIME: Years 1 to 3 ~ 5.00pm – 6.30pm Years 4 to 7 ~ 6.45pm – 8.45pm VENUE: School Hall – North Perth PS COST: $7.00 (pay at the door)

Entry Fee The entry fee of $7 00 includes a drink, snack and prizes. Please pay the correct entry fee at the door on the night. Children do not require spending money.

Dress Expectations Students are expected to dress appropriately for their age and a primary school function e.g. minimal make-up, modest clothing, low heels, no inappropriate slogans on shirts.

Attendance and Participation Only students currently enrolled at North Perth Primary School are invited to attend the disco. Students attending the disco are expected to participate fully in the dancing and activities. The doors will remain locked during the disco and the students will stay in the main school building. They will use the toilets in the administration area.

Waiting Area Students will be admitted to the hall at the advertised starting time for each disco. As it is expected to be cold, and possibly wet, it is recommended families wait in the undercover area if arriving early to drop off or collect their children.

Collection of Students The double doors to the school administration corridor (off the rear courtyard) will be re-opened ten minutes before the end of each disco to enable parents to enter the hall to observe and to collect their children. As there is only a 15 minute change-over break between the junior disco finishing and the senior disco commencing it is important the Year 1 to 3 students are collected promptly. This 15 minute break between discos is to enable the student councillors and staff members time to prepare for the senior disco. Senior students will not be admitted to the hall until 6.45pm and must wait with parents outside until invited inside.

Thank You This event is being conducted by the Student Councillors to raise funds for the Year 6 and 7 graduation activities. We are grateful for the support of staff members who will be assisting with supervision on the night.

SUSTAINABILITY FAST FACTS - GLASS The energy saved from recycling one glass

bottle is enough to light a 100 watt bulb for 4 hours.

Glass is 100% recyclable. Over 30% of the

raw material used in glass production now comes from recycled glass.

A modern glass bottle would

take 4000 years or more to decompose – and even longer if it’s in the landfill.

CANTEEN NEWS No LATE orders accepted on FRIDAY.

Pastas and nachos are proving a big success since their return this term. On Fridays we process over 210 orders out of our little canteen and it is an extremely busy day for Bec and her volunteers. We therefore must stress again.....that all Friday canteen orders MUST be ordered on Thursday - so our volunteers and Bec can get straight into the day on Friday. It is extremely unfair and a big inconvenience processing and adding LATE orders on the Friday morning to what is already a very busy day.

Please ensure you are organised to place your Friday orders on the Thursday or on the Monday of the same week, so you will not be disappointed when your order is not taken on the Friday.

We thank you for your understanding and assistance in this matter.

PEAC SPECIAL EVENT

On the 21st of May, 28 North Metropolitan PEAC

students were selected to go to a presentation at Perth Modern School done by Paul Scully-Power, the first Australian astronaut to travel to space.

He talked about his travel to space. He had prepared a presentation of photos taken when he was in space, one of which can be selected on Apple Mac as wallpaper. He started with training, and said that they flew an aeroplane up to 30,000 feet, turned off all the engines and went into freefall to simulate the effects of zero gravity. They turned the engines back on at 20,000 feet.

He explained how next to gravity, surface tension is Earth’s strongest force, so if you squirt water out of a water bottle in zero gravity it will form a perfect sphere. He also explained that the toilets on a spacecraft have specially created vacuums to take the place of gravity. Astronauts eat normal microwaveable food and space is so much more than is shown in the movies.

Overall, the talk was very interesting and informative.

THE MAGICAL WORLD OF CRAZY SCIENCE

The Magical World of Crazy Science is coming to North Perth Primary School on Thursday 3 July 2014. This

incursion supports our focus on Science and the implementation of the Australian Curriculum in this learning area.

The Magical World of Crazy Science is a delightful mixture of magical visual science demonstrations that teaches a

wide array of science concepts. The students will witness giant columns of elephant toothpaste, a genie’s

appearance from a lamp, the world’s weirdest bird, massive smoke rings zooming, levitations, giant bubbles and

mountains of slime. Add to this the hilarious mix of interactive magic and you have a very engaging science show

the students will talk about for days.

This 50 minute show for Pre-primary to Year 7 students will be followed by a question and answer session.

The cost is $5.00 per student.

Information will be distributed shortly and requesting payment be returned in the envelope provided before Monday

23 June 2014 so arrangements for this activity can be finalised. Thank you.

LET’S CHANNEL JAMIE OLIVER AND USE ALL THOSE LEFTOVERS

Suggestions by Amanda Ferguson, WA School Canteen Association Inc

Plain reduced fat milk

Flavour with Milo or other flavourings, pour into ice cube trays.

Pour into a small cup, place in freezer, when half frozen place a popstick in

the centre.

Wraps that are not so fresh

Spray lightly with olive oil spray then sprinkle with different herbs or

spices, tear or cut into wedges and bake in hot oven until crisp. Serve

‘naked’ or with a yummy reduced fat dip.

Fruit salad

Place all left over fruit salad or pieces of fruit into a blender, blend until smooth. Freeze into cubes or cups.

For a creamy dairy alternative add reduced fat yoghurt or reduced fat milk to the blended fruit.

Rice

Left over rice is perfect for making fried rice. This can be added to any leftover vegies. Make a fabulous

rice salad.

Salad

Shredded coleslaw (undressed) can be used as a filling for rice paper rolls.

Canned vegetables

Half used cans of vegetables can be added to salad, a stuffed spud mix or a spaghetti dish.

Baked beans

Left over baked beans can be placed in crispy baked bread baskets, on top of a stuffed potato or made into

jaffles.

Hurricanes are swirling storms that form at sea in tropical regions.

Under very bad conditions buildings can be destroyed.

Remnants of a cyclone may travel thousands of kilometres.

Regions that are hit by hurricanes take a while to be rebuilt.

In space it is easy to see a hurricane.

Can you believe the giant thunderclouds that make up the arms of the hurricane

also produce periods of torrential rain?

At a view from space there are bands of clouds separated by bands of clear sky.

Now and then a hurricane breaks loose from the tropics.

Effects of a hurricane may leave a city abandoned.

PLANTING, HARVESTING & COOKING Last term we planted spinach in our class vegetable garden. Since then we’ve been

nurturing our seedlings and watching them grow into large, healthy spinach. On

Friday 16 May, it was finally time to harvest our produce. We cooked spinach & cheese

pinwheels and they were absolutely delicious!

Teacher: Miss Alana Elliott

We love using the verandah outside our classroom for

Guided Reading.

We designed and created challenging board games

which we’ve played with our friends and even

other classes.

Year 4/5—Room 19

Cheese & Spinach Pinwheel Procedure:

1. Heat oven to 200’C. 2. Wash & chop spinach into small pieces. 3. Cook spinach in pan. 4. Mix spinach, grated cheese, parmesan cheese, spring onions & garlic pow-der together in a bowl. 5. Sprinkle flour on bench. 6. Place a sheet of puff pas-try on flour and brush with beaten egg mixture. 7. Spoon spinach mixture across the pastry. 8. Roll up pastry & chop into small slices. 9. Bake in oven for 15 minutes. 10. Cool for 10 minutes, then eat & ENJOY!!

Our theme for Term 2 is NATURAL DISASTERS.

We have been investigating the fascinating and
