OAK MEADOW WOMEN'S CLUBBy Sherry CruzPresident, OMWC

You're Welcome to AttendOak Meadow HOA Board Meetings are held the third Wednesday of each month and start at 7 PM. As always, OM residents are invited to attend. During the period of Covid precautions, meetings are held via ZOOM. If you would like receive the link to enable you to join us, please email your request to Bunnie Hamilton, OMHOA President, at: [email protected]. The next meeting is scheduled for February 17, 2021.

STEP UP TO SERVE!No, I’m not recruiting for Genevieve’s tennis team! It’s time for our Nominating Committee to meet to develop a slate of officers to be elected in April. Our by-laws require annual elections for our Executive Board members. These are the positions that comprise the Executive Board:

President First Vice-President Second Vice President Treasurer Recording Secretary

We hope that our members will help us by volunteering for a Board position or submitting nominations for any or all of the positions. Terms of office are for one year and begin on July 1 each year. Officers may be re-elected for a maximum of 3 consecutive terms.

Submit your nomination to KATHY WETHERELL, Nominating Committee chair, at [email protected], or text to 703-408-4161.

VIRTUAL SIDE GROUPSIt looks like our BOOK CLUB is likely to be our first virtual offering. If you’re a member of that side group, you’ve likely already heard from CELIA GLASGOW. If you’re not yet a member but wish to participate, contact CELIA at [email protected] or by phone at 210-492-5593 for details.

Plans are underway to set up virtual meetings of the WINE GROUP and TRIVIAL PURSUIT. If you’re a member of one (or both) of these groups, expect to hear from me in the near future. I’m still working on logistics, with help from a few willing friends!

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY! Show your love by continuing to follow the healthcare guidelines to keep all of us safe!!

Eagle Scout ProjectHello neighbors! My name is Colin Miller and I am a 10-year resident of Oak Meadow and a lifeguard at the neighborhood pool. Like Patrick Hughes, I too am a Life Scout, but in Troop 940, and am working on my Eagle Scout project. When thinking about my project, I thought it would be best to give back to my community as well. Whereas Patrick’s many projects benefitted all the residents, my project will benefit our four-legged residents. After consulting with the OMSC pool manager, we agreed a great project would be to convert the abandoned volleyball court next to the tennis courts into a dog park. This will give our pets a place to play, exercise and socialize in a contained area. I plan to make it 60’ x 45’ with a 4’ fence to give the dogs approximately 2700 square feet to play.

In order to make this project happen, I am asking for support from my fellow Troop members, friends, family and members of our Oak Meadow community. My estimated cost is $900 for the materials. The work will be done by my fellow Scouts, friends and neighbors and should take a few weekends to complete. If you are able to donate to my project, either financially or with materials (old tires, wood for play structures, tennis balls, etc.), I would greatly appreciate it. Donations can be put in the pool mailbox at 14330 Vantage Hill or dropped at my house at 2910 Sky Cliff. Checks should be made out to Troop 940 and have “Colin Miller Eagle Scout Project” in the memo line. My goal is to start and finish the dog park in March. If you have any questions, or would like to coordinate donation drop offs, my number is 210-510-9078. Thank you for your support on my journey to the rank of Eagle Scout.

Teen Skills and Services

If you want someone on your team who is dedicated, thorough, organized, a team player, a natural leader, a gifted story teller who will leave you with a smile every time you meet - you want Norma Murphy. Oak Meadow has been the lucky recipient of her time and efforts as a volunteer within both the HOA and the Woman’s Club.

We almost did not get a chance to know her. When the Murphys arrived here, the first house the family considered was in (hilly) Hunters Creek. They had two young boys who loved anything with wheels and Oak Meadow had a flat terrain that over the years allowed the boys to bike all over the neighborhood, visiting friends, going to swim team practice and to the park. Now those boys bring grandchildren to visit and enjoy the same pleasures. Norma also worked with children as the librarian at Locke Hill Elementary on De Zavala for 28 years. Her family and career inspired one of her most enduring contributions to OM. Per Norma: “Of all the worthy WC projects The Little Free Library is my very favorite! Located at the park, our little library is one of over 100,000 in the world offering free books. Although I collected boxes of books to supply the little library, it has maintained a nice collection from donations. Every time I visit, more and different titles are available. Another evidence of OM caring and sharing.”

Norma is a longtime Coordinator, a key role in the annual OMHOA membership drive, as well as an organizer for National Night Out for her street and other community efforts to bring neighbors together.

Norma has played a significant part in the success and longevity of

the Woman’s Club. She served as President, Secretary, and with the Yard of the Month team. She created and organized the spring Backyard Tours and Great Escapes, a series of day trips. Great Escapes brought ladies together to visit museums, the SA Food Bank and the Lighthouse for the Blind. There was a road trip to Comfort, a day at the Botanical Gardens and an interesting lecture on chocolate at the McNay Museum of Art and more.

When asked: ‘What has made Oak Meadow a community for you?’ Norma responded: ‘this neighborhood has all the makings of a small town. People celebrate, serve, and show concern for each other. When there is a need, provisions are made… a blood drive for a teen, meals for a family or transportation for an elderly neighbor. There is always overwhelming support for our elementary school. When the tennis courts needed resurfacing and the pool needed repairs, folks donated even if they were not members of the clubs. Volunteers are always open for park cleanup, cake walks, parades, festivals. There is something for everyone and there are many opportunities to meet and befriend newcomers.

After 44 years living in Oak Meadow, I cannot imagine living any-where else. We have developed life-long friendships. Neighbors can change, but the ‘neighboring’ does not change in Oak Meadow. Be-ing a small part of a bigger picture gives a sense of belonging to some-thing worthwhile. Women, join Woman’s Club. Guys, pitch in with HOA, swim club or tennis club. Everyone can have a part of park activities, when we can do that again. Let’s hope that is very soon.’

As you can tell, Norma’s community spirit is still strong. Norma, thank you for ‘neighboring’ Oak Meadow, we are better for it.
