Oak Choirs “Sing with Pride”

Fall is my favorite time of year! Traditional schools jump back into the swing of another year of growth andchallenges for students, staff and administration. The Oak Vocal Music Department is heading into their biggestyear yet! Continuing to grow, Room 42 will see about 300 performers each day honing their vocal andperformance skills in five unique choirs. Middle School is an exciting time for students, and as a teacher (andparent) will be living with adolescence both during the day at Oak AND at home! Middle School students carrytons of enthusiasm and energy which we work on focusing and creating amazing on-stage performances that willbe a joy for you and your family/friends to observe.

Oak utilizes a great group of choreographers and musicians, and we will enjoy seeing what they have in store forour students and how they will enhance our performances this year. Lastly, the Friends of Music Booster Clubputs the fuel in our tank, both in volunteer and financial substance. They are an amazing group of people, and Iam so thankful to their dedication, energy and support of the students and the program.

Los Alamitos USD has a proven tradition of choral music and we at Oak do our best to provide the students withwhat they need to be successful within the middle school performance ‘world’ as well as preparing for them tosucceed in the high school choral program. The Oak choirs are designed to be an introduction to and workingtowards excellence in the world of…

music theory/sight-singing vocals and performance related to vocal production singing & performing within an ensemble performance

To build a strong music program, we will need your partnership and your support. It is important that you andyour performer take a moment to read through the following pages regarding the performance and rehearsalcalendar, costume expectations, donation information, Booster Club opportunities, and concert information. Thesuccess of this program for the singers depends on everyone’s committed participation in the years’ events.

I am thrilled to be working with your young singer this year. Music brings kids together creating friendships andmemories that will last a lifetime. This is sure to be a year of fun and educational musical memories in themaking!

Welcome to the Oak Middle School Choir community. It is my hope that you willexperience many exciting and satisfying adventures this choir year. The choir program is adynamic and constantly growing group of diverse young men and women. This year choirmembers will be performing in a musical, choir concerts, competitions and community serviceevents. Your student will learn valuable academic, musical, cultural and social skills.

We are fortunate to have an amazingly talented choir director, along with a districtadministration in Los Alamitos that is extremely supportive of the arts. We could not providethis gifted group of children with such an enriching experience without the help of you, ourFriends of Music (FOM) Families. It takes hard work, creativity and financial assistance torun a program of this caliber. When you support FOM you will meet great people, and be apart of your child’s life during these important middle school years.

The FOM Board looks forward to meeting you. Do not hesitate to contact any of theFOM officers with your questions or concerns. Together, let’s make this the best year yet forour students!

Oak Choirs “What We Learn”

Musical Skills learned in a music class: Read, write and perform intervals, rhythmic and melodic notation. Transcribe simple melodic and rhythmic notation. Sight-sing melodies and rhythms. Listen to, Analyze & Describe Music Sing a variety of vocal repertoire. Sing music in two and three parts. Learn how to utilize their vocal instrument with expression, technical accuracy, tone quality, enunciation and articulation. Basic composition Perform and become familiar with music from various cultures. Listen, evaluate and write about the music performed and/or listened to. Begin to identify the many languages and terms utilized in music that are based from and carry over to other languages and

cultures.

Performance Skills learned through a choral performing group: Performing with basic vocal technique. Performing with basic dance steps and techniques. Learning to sing a song well, learning to dance a song well…learning to do both well. Preparing a song to be pleasant enough for public viewing. Preparing a song to be pleasant enough for concert viewing. Preparing a song to be strong enough for competition. Learning what it means to go beyond singing and dancing a song to PERFORMING a song. Body and facial expression techniques. Persistence and endurance while performing. Always have an overwhelming facial and body expression so the audience can see them. Learning how to make the performance “magical” for the audience!

Life Skills learned through involvement in a Performing Group: Appropriate behavior in a classroom that is open and free (no desks!) Living with the joy brought forth from singing every day. Living with the joy brought forth from dancing many days. Living with the extreme joy brought forth from singing AND dancing many days! It’s a magical combination. “It may be rainy outside, but the sun is always shining in here!” –Kailyn Weber Organizational skills (keeping costumes and all performance details in order) Balancing scheduling skills (making sure there is enough time to rehearse/perform AND play soccer/football/cheer, etc. AND do

homework AND get good grades). Being prepared for a grade that is not a paper handed in (costume days, sight-reading tests, performances, competitions). Developing relationships in an academic AND artistic environment. Behaving appropriately in an academic AND artistic environment. Helping the creative side AND the math/science sides of the brain work together. Dealing with nerves and still performing to the best of their abilities! “Renting” a solo, and learning to perform amongst the nerves that come along with it. Audition skills (standing and performing in front of others) Dealing with disappointment (not getting the part he/she wanted, having a friend receive the part they wanted, things changing

and not having the part they had anymore). Learning to ‘go with the flow’: the ‘constant’ in choir is that things are always changing! Blooming where they are planted! Learning to be part of the crowd. Learning to become a leader in behavior, vocal strength, attitude and musical prowess.

Dealing with Disappointment**Excerpts from an online article titled “Helping Dancers Deal With Disappointment**

It’s happened. Maybe you were afraid of this. Or, maybe it blindsided you but… it’s happened. You didn’t makethe dance team. You were passed over for the scholarship. You didn’t get the part or solo or moment in the sun forwhich you worked so hard.

Now what? You are hurting. You are crying. How can this be made “all better”.

DO: Realize this will help you become a more resilient and confident human being. When you are faced with aletdown, you have a great opportunity to face it and rise above the obstacles that come your way. It may not feellike a gift but it is.DON’T: Fix it. Your first instinct may be to try. However, just as it is a parent’s role to help hisbaby become proficient in feeding himself, assist her preschooler in learning to use a potty, and teach hergrade-school child to tie his shoelaces, it is a young adult’s unhappy duty to cope with disappointment.

Gauge Your Resiliency – Do you tend to take things personally? Do you usually have a positive outlook? Checkin with your heart to see how you usually handle upsetting situations and how you can become more resilient. How about your parents? Their attitude can affect how you react. If they see rejection or disappointments asproblems then you may tend to move in the same direction.

When the rejection is a BIG Deal1. Validate your emotions. It’s okay to be disappointed.2. Recognize what can and cannot be changed. What can be changed, of course, are the things regarding self,

including one’s attitude. What cannot be changed are the actions and decisions of others. Despite hard workand determination and talent sometimes you just don’t get what your heart desires. It is a hard truth, but onethat we all learn one way or another. The difference in people is how they respond to that truth. Those thatmove on and continue to work hard are the ones that fulfill the adage that “if you work hard or set your mindto something, you can be anything you want to be.”

3. Redirect your attention toward something in which you are (or will likely be) successful. Focus on whatcomes easily to you that isn’t everyone’s gift. Focus on recognitions you have had previously. Should youscratch the activity, expand your thoughts/ideas/experiences or enjoy the situation for what it is rather thanwhat you wished it would be.

4. Process your negative reaction and then move on. After all, everyone needs to let it out sometimes.5. Consider other choices or alternatives. Realize that though you didn’t make the team or get the part you

wanted, you still get to do what you love! You have the freedom to take some extra classes elsewhere, or inanother style, or during a summer workshop. These are things that may improve chances next time but, moreimportantly, they will strengthen, improve, and challenge you. Alternatively, you may have time to spend onfavorite activities or pursue other interests outside of the area of disappointment. What do you want to do now?How do you want to proceed from here? What can be most disruptive about disappointment is the feeling ofhaving no control over a situation. Choice can help you regain that feeling of having a say.

6. Put it in perspective! Volunteer at a hospital, organize a performance at a nursing home, work together at asoup kitchen, walk for charity. Find or do something that helps you recognize how fortunate you are andreduces your “big deal” to its proportional size in the scheme of things.

6 | Page Oak Middle School Vocal Department Handbook 2013-‐2014

Page 7: Oak Middle School Vocal Music Department Handbook Choir... · 49 CHARMS 50 Volunteers ... challenges for students, staff and administration. The Oak Vocal ... will be living with

7. Look for a solution on your own. Don’t always ask parents to fix things! Even if you want them to come toyour rescue, resist the urge to pacify your hurt by taking action or dwelling upon things that cannot be changed(a studio director’s decision, the reality of another person’s skills or talent, the criteria for recognition byanother…). This is not easy but you are often more resilient than you give yourself credit for. Though kids ofall ages may be quick to dramatize their displeasure, many bounce right back. Focus on other things, and bythe next day (or week), all may seem right with the world again. Accept that you may have recovered morequickly than you expected!

8. Consider the situation: “I’m sorry you didn’t get 1st place at the competition. What did the 1st place team dowell? What do you think you’ll work on for next time?”

9. Ask wise adults: Ask your parents or other trusted adults how they dealt with disappointment, what theylearned from the situations, where failures led them, how they felt and what they did to overcome.

10.When to step in: Is there a time when you should step in to solve something that you feel is unfair? The shortanswer is almost never.

When it comes to decisions about roles or teams, however, it is important to realize that work ethic and evenabilities are not the sole criteria from which directors cast their shows or teams. You may disagree with theirspecifications but it is within their right to select and judge based upon a standard of their choosing. You mightapproach them with a desire to know and understand their process but demanding they defend a decision does notput you at an advantage. (How or under what circumstances would you demand this of a prospective employerthat passed you over for a job? What about your current employer if you were not selected for promotion?) Whenyou receive a “no thank you,” your goal is to gain understanding so that you might cope with the decision. Thedirector will see through attempts of getting on the team or somehow winning that role if that is really yourambition and you’ll hit a roadblock if it is.

When hard work doesn’t pay off…(I’ll repeat)

Occasionally, despite hard work and determination one does not always get what their heart desires. It is ahard truth, but one we all learn one way or another. The difference in people is how they respond to thattruth. You must accept this and look for the positive in every disappointment.

In addition, when it comes to hard work, attitude, or any other virtue, what a person deserves is not alwayswhat he will get. Thank goodness I don’t always get what I deserve because sometimes I don’t deserve what Iget!

Final Thought: What do you want to be?

It is sometimes easy to confuse our accomplishments and awards with who we are. In our culture we place a lot ofemphasis on the achievements for which a person has been recognized – she is a two-time Olympic medalist;; he isa famous actor who has won numerous stage and screen awards. These things say little of who a person really is.In addition, these recognitions only look back never forward.

Who is this person becoming? Where one is going should matter a whole lot more than where one has been.Missions accomplished and tasks/goals completed are how we develop self-confidence in our abilities, however,we are not defined by our achievements. In fact, often we are defined more by our failures. It is despite andsometimes because of obstacles or disappointments that we become a dancer, a doctor, or something completelyopposite but all the more right than whatever it is we want (or wanted) to be.

Oak Choirs “Perform up to Expectations”

This program is obviously more than a ‘sing for an hour during school’ program. If not familiar with the traditionof excellence within the Los Alamitos USD, the choral program may seem overwhelming to new students andparents. However, Oak students who love performing are also those who will successfully work through busyschedules to make sure they keep their grades up, commit to their performance requirements as well as otheroutside activities and responsibilities. Middle School is a learning ground for the world they will experience allthrough high school. As such, each student WILL need their parents help in making sure they keep on track.

Classroom Supplies:Oak Choir students are requested to provide a three ring binder or folder to put all the choir information and musicinto. Also in this binder it is helpful to include a small pencil pouch with a few pencils, eraser and a highlighter. Itis also helpful to have page protectors in order to keep the music safe inside the binder.

Auditions, Group Placement and Solos – Director’s Discretion:Performance group placements are made at the sole discretion of the director. Such decisions are based on a widevariety of factors and insight that may not be obvious to performers and/or their parents. Placement decisions areFINAL. Mrs. Randeen will NOT enter into any discussion with parents or students regarding these decisions. Shewould be happy to let you know how a performer can improve his/her skills and better prepare for the nextaudition opportunity.

Stage Standing Order Placement – Director’s Discretion:In performing groups, EVERY “player” is on the “court” 100% of the time. No one sits on the bench. Stageplacements are also based on a wide variety of factors that may not be obvious to the performers and/or theirparents. Due to the large amount of performers within each choir, it is highly likely that you will not be able to seeyour child perfectly all the time. Whether your child performs in the third row, the sixth row or the front row, encourage him/her to “bloom where he/she is planted”. Everyone is on the “court”, and everyone is required togive 100% all the time! As there is no way for everyone to clearly understand all the decisions involved in stageplacement, Mrs. Randeen will not enter into conversations regarding stage placement. Students are encouraged to“bloom where they are planted”!

GRADING POLICIESPerformance – 30% Be There! “Everything we do, we do together.” In these performing groups every person is on the court every minute of every song. Class

rehearsals, outside rehearsals and performances are essential to maintain the level of performance Oak audiences are accustomedto. Every person is necessary to create the highest level of finished product. Those who are missing lower the level at which thefinal product is performed at. Everyone is important and necessary to each group!! Be sure to pull your weight, even when it isinconvenient to you and/or your family.

Attendance is expected at class every day and at all outside rehearsals. Attendance is expected at all performances & special events. Tardies and absences from both class and out of school activities, including rehearsals, will affect the students’ grade regardless

of the nature of the absence. A chronically ill student will not do well in this type of class. The ONLY last minute excusedabsences for a rehearsal or performance are a student’s non-ambulatory illness or the death or critical illness of an immediatefamily member.

Work, family evenings, doctor’s appointments, homework, social activities, etc., are NOT reasons to miss practice or aperformance and will be reflected in your grade. Absences adversely affect the entire performing group and therefore areconsidered severe. If an activity is missed due to an excused, school-approved cause, the points from that activity must be madeup based on guidelines in the Vocal Music Department Handbook (distributed in the fall). Points missed due to an unexcusedabsence or tardy may not be made up.

On-time arrival is expected at class every day, outside rehearsals, performances & special events. Getting to class on time is sometimes difficult to achieve 100% of the time, particularly for zero period. As those of you have

been rehearsing with the Oak choirs, we often rehearse from bell to bell. Every minute of rehearsal counts. You cannotmake-up what you miss, and arriving late is often rude and distracting to any rehearsal. An entire group showing up on timefor rehearsals and shows make our rehearsals and programs superior.

Attendance is taken as soon as the bell rings. If you are not in your assigned seat at that time you will be marked absent andwill not earn points for the rehearsal.

If you come into the classroom after the bell has rung you are considered tardy. If a student arrives more than 20 minutes late he/she will remain marked absent and may not earn participation points for the

rehearsal. In addition, he/she will be considered truant through the attendance office unless a parent clears the absence. Continual tardiness and/or unexcused absences will result in parent notification, loss of performance experiences and

possible removal from the group. Appropriate behavior and citizenship is expected at class every day, outside rehearsals, performances & special events. Calendar

Calendars will be posted online and in class as soon as possible. Be SURE to go through the calendar and find conflictswithin the next week.

Changes in the calendar (and communication about these changes) will be made as efficiently as possible. It is YOUR responsibility to go online and check out the updated calendar, or pick one up in the choir room. Sometimes we will be asked to perform at an outside event. We will inform you of the event at the earliest possible moment.

Your attendance will be required, unless otherwise noted, and all performance requirements will be in place.Absences: Excused & Unexcused

Because this is the real world, there will unfortunately be times that we cannot be two or three places at once. In theoccasional situation a student must miss an outside rehearsal or performance he/she has the following options.

Excused absences include illness, a death in the family, a performance, sporting or family event planned well in advance ofthe publication of the Vocal Music Department calendar. These students may make up points only in the case of an excusedabsence.

Unexcused Absences include, but are not limited to, transportation issues, work, babysitting, family or social events, rehearsals or sports practices, doctor’s appointments, forgetfulness, and homework.

Participation in a performance following a missed rehearsal is at the sole discretion of the director. Typically, if a studentmisses a performance or dress rehearsal they must watch the following performance (and receive no credit) before performingin the subsequent event. 3 unexcused absences from outside activities will result in removal from the performing group

Communication is required in ALL cases. The director must be notified of a planned or unplanned absence for outsideactivities via email or phone as early as possible. Twenty-hours in advance is considered borderline. Email: [email protected] – THE BEST WAY Phone number: 562.799.4740 x76242

No student may miss any class, including "0" period, for detentions or to make-up work in other classes. Teachers and detention are available at other times of the day. If a student chooses to participate in these other activities

during a choir rehearsal without specific and advance permission from the director, he/she will be considered absent and/ortardy. If make-up work is necessary because a student missed a class due to a choir activity allowances will be made to miss achoir rehearsal at the discretion of the choir director.

A student who misses school the day of a performance or rehearsal or misses the last class before a performance will not beallowed to participate in that day’s event! If a student is too sick, tired or busy to attend school he/she is also too sick, tiredor busy to attend a rehearsal or a performance. Except for legitimate illness or an emergency family situation the absencefrom the event will be considered unexcused.

During competition season if a student misses more than 2 rehearsals (class or outside) the week prior to a competitionhe/she will not be allowed to perform in the competition that week.

Notes from parents, guardians, teachers and bosses explaining your tardiness or absence will be excused at the discretion ofthe director. If the absence or tardy has already been recorded through the attendance office regular school procedure mustbe followed. Your absence or tardy, regardless of the reason, will result in the inability to earn participation points for thatparticular event. Only serious, legitimate excuses are acceptable. This does not include car trouble or parent lateness.

If the absence or tardy has already been recorded through the attendance office, regular school procedure must befollowed.

Technique, Theory & Written Assessments – 20% Music Theory and Sight Singing is expected to be learned, understood and represented during a student performance/test. Vocal technique, rehearsal technique and performance technique is expected to be learned, understood and represented at all

times. Written assessments will be required from time to time, and must be completed in the best manner possible.

Repertoire Report – 10% Choose a concert piece that seems interesting to you. Research that piece, the composer and the history of the tune. Write a report that will represent all the information you have found. Grading rubric...50 points total;; 4 paragraphs: introduction, song information, composer information, closing;; 5 points each for

introducing and closing paragraphs;; 20 points possible for historical basis of the piece;; 20 points possible for composerinformation;; grading always includes spelling, grammar and complete sentence expectations. These reports need to be goodenough to have your Language Arts teacher impressed.

Participation – 40% “Everything we do, we do together.” The performance groups at Oak Middle School are performance & participation classes. Since it is impossible to make up what is

missed in a rehearsal and since the ensemble is affected by each individual’s presence, grading is based heavily on participation. “Practice makes Permanent” – Performing in the Oak Choirs requires a commitment that passes beyond the school day. Each

individual must practice the commitment they would like to see becoming permanent in their future. What will we see now, andwhat will the performer’s employee see in the future?

Learn, sing, dance and perform your part. Maintain citizenship & classroom behavior requirements fulfilled (as listed above). Maintain rehearsal and performance attire requirements fulfilled (as listed above).

Grading Scale: Grades can be checked at abi.losal.org100% - A+ 90-99% - A 80-89% - B 70-79% - C 60-69% - D

Academic Requirements for performance and travel:Students must maintain a solid grade point average. If a student falls below 2.0 in any semester he/she will not be allowed to performwith the group. Since performing is the primary activity in choir, the student may be dropped from the program. In addition, if astudent is carrying a “D” or below in any class prior to a performance, he/she will not be allowed to perform until the grade is raised.

REHEARSAL & CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONSCitizenship can be defined as… the character of an individual viewed as a member of society;; behavior in terms of the duties, obligations, and functionsof a citizen. Students are expected to portray a character that will benefit themselves, Oak choir and Oak Middle School as a whole. Decisions that willdetract from that will not be tolerated. Situations of negative citizenship include parent notification, school administration involvement and potentialremoval from the class/program. Examples (again, this list is not exhaustive) include…1. Illegal or immoral activity2. Ignoring director’s requests3. Displaying a negative attitude towards the program or those involved in the program.

Productivity is expected every day when performers enter the rehearsal room. The majority of students will be actively involved in the entire rehearsal.Social time is important in middle school, but productivity is the first task on the schedule each day. Some days we will not want to be productive, butwe will choose to anyway. In this way we will learn perseverance, and become responsible and productive young adults, and your future employers willbe so thankful!

Each day the performers must….1. Leave all electronic devices in their backpacks. Cell phones, MP3 players, and other electronic devices are disruptive to rehearsals and

performances and will be confiscated.2. Be in their seats when the bell rings.

Every minute of rehearsal is essential to the success of the group. In performing groups you cannot make up what you miss by being late orabsent. Students arriving late distract the rehearsal for everyone. These rules are designed to ensure that rehearsal time is used to the fullestand performances are as smooth as possible. Adherence to them will add to the superior quality of our program.

Attendance is taken when the bell rings. Students will be in their place when the bell rings, ready to begin rehearsal. If you are not in your assigned place at that time, you will be marked absent and will not earn points for the rehearsal. In addition, you

will also be considered tardy and the attendance records will reflect this. Performers will remain in the classroom while class/rehearsals are in session. No trips to your locker, the bathroom, to see a teacher, etc., will

be allowed (permission from the director must be granted for an emergency situation).3. Have the appropriate music and tools in their possession in their seat.4. Treat other members and the director with respect at all times. Appropriate language is always required.

Performers are expected to be attentive in class, participate 100%. Performers are expected to cause no disruptions, do their homework outside of rehearsal (not in class) and be sure they develop the

self-control to keep from talking. Performers will be attentive in class, participate fully in the ongoing rehearsal and will refrain from talking, doing homework, or being

generally disruptive to the rehearsal process. Rehearsal time is limited and valuable.5. Not eat, drink (water is the exception) or chew gum in any rehearsal area at any time. This includes concert holding rooms and performance areas.

Students will share in the responsibility of keeping these areas clean.6. Put all items back in their appropriate locations (folders, music, jackets, etc.) at the end of rehearsal. The floor, classroom shelves or under the risers

are NOT appropriate storage locations for personal items.7. Attend class every day. No student may miss any class for detentions or to make-up work in other classes. Teachers and detention are available at

other times of the day. If a student chooses to participate in these other activities during a choir rehearsal without specific and advance permissionfrom the director, he/she will be considered absent and/or tardy. If make-up work is necessary because a student missed a class due to a choiractivity, allowances will be made to miss a choir rehearsal at the discretion of the choir director.

8. A student who misses school the day of a performance or rehearsal or misses the last class before a performance will not be allowed to participatein that day’s event. If a student is too sick, tired, or busy to attend school, he/she is also too sick, tired, or busy to attend a rehearsal or aperformance. Notes from parents, guardians and teachers explaining your tardiness or absence will be excused at the discretion of the director.

9. Performers must be dressed appropriately for choreography rehearsals (clothes that are easy to move in, shoes that will be comfortable to dance in).It may be wise to keep a pair of shoes at school that are appropriate to dance in. Per school policy, students must wear proper footwear duringrehearsals. Those who do not do so will not be allowed to rehearse that day and may be excluded from the song being rehearsed that day. Analternate activity will be required during the rehearsal time.

10. If you are unable to rehearse or perform due to illness, injury, lack of appropriate attire (shoes!) or any other reason you will be required tocomplete an alternate musical activity.

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR MODIFICATIONPerformers are expected to have high levels of behavior and work ethic. These expectations are no different than in the otherclassrooms. However, in middle school, when there are no desks or chairs, tweens and new-teens often struggle with boundaries thatare more easily followed in traditional classrooms. While on field trips or in performance situations, inappropriate behavior oftenresults in Saturday School. Therefore, if your child comes home with a detention, he/she has earned it by doing one of the following(this list is not exhaustive) in class or in a rehearsal, and already been assigned consequences in the classroom:

Being Tardy Eating food or chewing gum in the room.Drinking beverages other than water Horseplay / RunningDisruptive Attitude Disruptive BehaviorForgetting essential performance items Neglecting assigned meeting timesDisrespect Leaving the assigned locationsPhysical Contact PDA’sBullying Any inappropriate behavior or language

OUT-OF-CLASS REHEARSALSChoir takes you places! Going places takes time in preparation as well as performance experiences. To perform at the level Oak isaccustomed to, extra time is required. Rest assured, rehearsals that are not important or required will not be called. If a rehearsal iscalled, it IS required for your performer to attend for the entire rehearsal. Weekly Time Commitment: 5 hours within class Out-of-class Time Commitments:

Choreography Rehearsals (4 hours) – ShowTime – 1;; ShowStars – 1;; ShowStoppers – 4;; ShowMen – 4;; ShowCase doesnot typically dance. Dates are determined by our choreographers and their professional working schedules. These dateswill not always be convenient for you or I, or our children, be we do what we can do to make sure the performers havethe greatest opportunity to look amazing on stage.

Concert Dress Rehearsals (2-3 hours) – Concert Dress Rehearsals are the morning of the concert during school. Mrs.Randeen works with the teachers to inform them of these rehearsals ahead of time. At times, due to academics, studentsare not allowed to attend Dress Rehearsals because of academic issues.

Out-of-school Dress Rehearsals (2-3 hours) – Out of school dress rehearsals help ShowCase, ShowStars & ShowTime becomfortable performing their tunes in their costumes.

Competition Dress Rehearsals (2-3 hours) – Competition Dress Rehearsals occur before competition to make sure weknow our show and can work through the entire set and costume changes efficiently with the entire backstage crew(choir coordinators & backstage helpers) – ShowStoppers – 3;; ShowMen – 3

Tuesday rehearsals: Every Tuesday a rehearsal will be scheduled from 3-5 pm. ShowStoppers and ShowMen will rotatethese rehearsals for most of the year. Sometimes ShowStars and ShowTime might be rotated in on these days. Mrs.Randeen will do her best to keep as many rehearsals on these days as possible.

Please remember… Mrs. Randeen will not call a rehearsal that is unnecessary. If a rehearsal is called, it is expected that all performers attend for the entire time. If we can cancel a rehearsal, we will! Performers who do not live up to their responsibility both in class and in the out-of-school rehearsals will be dropped from the

group – as not one performer ever sits on the bench, even one absence affects everyone in the group as well as the level ofperformance for the entire department. This includes absences during school breaks, for major family events, medicalappointments, homework and extra-curricular lessons & classes.

Competition Season – 3-4 Saturdays from February through April. This affects ShowStoppers & ShowMen.

PERFORMANCEBEHAVIOR REQUIREMENTS & CONSEQUENCES

Performing is the goal of the rehearsals. Performances are designed to be executed as close to as perfect as possible and beentertaining to the audience. Our goal as performers is to become “magic’ to the audience. As such, the following guidelines apply…Required Behavior for performances and travel:There is a zero tolerance policy for less than appropriate behavior. The following items will result in disciplinary action and potentially removal from the group. This list may not be 100% inclusive.

Eating and drinking in costume Leaving the assigned rooms Forgetting essential performance itemsHorse-play Disruptive Attitude Disruptive BehaviorNeglecting assigned meeting times Disrespect of chaperones and scheduled meetingsPhysical Contact PDA’s Technology misuseUse of drugs, alcohol or tobacco Bullying Any inappropriate behavior orlanguageInappropriate behavior when backstage, in the wings, or traveling between any of these locations

Electronic Devices:1. Los Alamitos USD has a strict policy regarding electronic devices, and it is to be adhered to in every rehearsal and performance

situation.2. Performers may have these items in their possession but are to be put away and not become a distraction. Items that ring or are

seen during a rehearsal will be confiscated.3. Travel:

The District electronics policy stands. Cell phones may be used when traveling to and from an event. They may also be used during free time away from the performance. They may NOT be used at any time when in a performance event situation (performing, backstage, audience, etc.).

Valuables:1. Please do not bring valuables to rehearsals and/or performances.2. Please do not bring large amounts of money to rehearsals and/or performances.3. It is important to bring a small amount of money for food when needed.Off Stage & Holding Room Behavior: Call Time for a performance is important. If performers are late for call time, there is really not a good time for the performers to

warm-up and gain focus for the show. Call time will normally be 45 minutes before a concert. Performers create “magic” for the concert attendees. They must not be seen except on stage. At call time the performers must be

checked into the holding room. Performers are NOT allowed to go outside the holding room before the concert, during theconcert or during intermission.

After call time, parents and concert attendees are not allowed to socialize with the performers. The time to connect with theperformers is AFTER the show!

Whenever in a holding room, performers are required to have ‘something’ to do (cards, chess, board games, etc.). Brain-basedgames are helpful, and help keep their “heads in the game”. They cannot lose focus of their job during the performance. .

Adult supervisors and student leaders will be assigned to keep students safe during off-stage times. Challenging the authority ofany parent, teacher or supervisor will result in the following consequences from the teacher and/or Oak administration:detention, Saturday School and potential removal from the choir.

Food and drink are NOT allowed when in costume. It is wise for performers to bring along a big shirt to cover their costume IFthey HAVE to eat something.

No student is to bring any large amount of money, electronics, or valuables into a performance or rehearsal. Students will beresponsible for any lost or stolen items.

Performance Details: Performers are on stage to PERFORM! They are not on stage to play with the curtains, chat with their friends, fix their hair, etc. When walking on and off stage the goal is quiet feet (walk on your toes) and focus – find your position and think about your

performance. Do NOT touch curtains or anything else backstage. Performers will be 1)in their holding room 2) on deck (ready to perform) or 3) performing on stage. Wandering will not be

tolerated. No one is allowed in the wings and backstage. This creates chaos and distraction for the performers, the crew and theaudience.

PERFORMANCE APPEARANCEPerforming is a way to create magical experience for the audience. Everything helps create that magic...music, standing positions, costumes, grooming, make-up (girls), props, etc. These items, when combined, portray an excellence in stage presence and enhancethe visual experience for the viewer. In addition, the performer increases their level of performance and expectations of ‘self’ whenspending extra time and energy creating an amazing visual experience. Guidelines will be in place. These guidelines are not justrandom ‘rules’…they are expected to be followed. Ignoring the strict costume dress code will result in removal from a performance(concert or competition) and will be counted as an unexcused absence when graded.

Information related to required appearance are found in the next few pages. It is important information, so please read it carefully.Additional information may be provided before each performance event or found on CHARMS & Mrs. Randeen’s teacher website.

Questions are expected and hoped for – don’t be shy! Please remember that it is YOUR job to make sure YOU are prepared for the performance. Do not rely on your parents, instructor, friends or choir coordinator.

COSTUME CARE AND BASICS Costume items will primarily be supplied by Oak. At times you may be asked to provide your own items for a particular song

or event. We strongly encourage you to find these items at home, borrow them from a friend, or purchase at a thrift store. Costume care instructions must be followed. All costume pieces are clean and wrinkle free. This will require hanging them up after each performance and not shoving

them in the garment bag for later. Garment bags should be used regularly by all choir members.

Garment bags will be issued to every new choir student. Returning performers are asked to use the garment bag from theprior year. If the garment bag is unusable, let the adults in charge of costumes know.

Perfectly packed garment bags may be required the day before the event. This gives us time to make sure everyone haswhat is needed in the garment bags and get them loaded.

Performers must provide shoes and undergarments. The other items are the property of the choir program and may becollected at the end of the school year.

A lost or damaged item will be replaced by or paid for by the student. If necessary, a list specific to each performance will be provided so performers can be assured they are clear as to what is

needed. Proper care of an item assures Oak of being able to use the item again, so BE CAREFUL with costumes and props!

YOU are responsible for your costume. You are expected to care for it, keep it clean, make sure it is stain and wrinklefree and alter it if needed after you receive the garment.

The cost of replacement costume items are YOUR responsibility. So if you lose or damage the items YOU will beresponsible for letting someone know in a timely manner AND paying for the replacement item. If costume pieces arepurchased from retailers not in the area, it will take some time to replace them. As such, you MUST let someone know assoon as possible about the missing item.

Think AHEAD of items you may be missing so you will not be running around frantically looking for black socks, tights without runs or hair ties. Such situations stress you (and everyone around you) out and are not conducive for afun, peaceful and stress-free performance opportunity. We may have some emergency items available. These items can be PURCHASED. Emergency items will be replaced at a premium, and can be purchased at other retailers for less. This is to encourage

performers to be prepared and not rely on the costuming ‘store’. Remember to bring some cash for such emergencies ($20 should cover it).

“Sing With Pride” VOCAL LEADERS

This year, we will have a handful of fellow students that will be chosen to be your leaders. These students will keep things moving! They help organize, keep everyone informed and communicate between students and the director. In addition, they will be in chargeof administrative, social duties, basic communication and some rehearsal leadership. Lastly, they will also have a role ofcommunication between choir members and the director and booster club.

Leaders are to lead with love, kindness and respect. Students who are expected to follow these leaders must respect them and keeppersonal opinions to themselves.

SMALL GROUP/SOLO PERFORMANCE AUDITIONSWe may have an opportunity to add some small vocal group and solo vocal acts to our performances this year. If you are interested inthis opportunity, you must audition with your performance piece on the fall audition date. Auditions must provide the 100%perfected act. Acts that have not adequately prepared will not be allowed to audition.

Audition requirements: Adequate preparation – the piece must be prepared completely Accompaniment available – either option is viable

Sheet music in the correct key Backtrack on CD or iPod/iPad (instrumental backtracks are required…no voices on the backtrack)

Audition results:Once again, there is no way for everyone to clearly understand all related to the decisions in who is chosen to perform. Mrs. Randeenwill make these decisions. Discussion and arguments related to the decisions made are unacceptable and could quite possibly resultin the loss of leadership positions and affect future performance opportunities.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT & FOM

Oak Middle School’s Vocal Music program creates a unique, fun and safe opportunity for students to explore theircreative potential, grow as individuals, build confidence and friendships, “shine” in performance situations andlearn that practice truly makes permanent. The Oak Choir students GROW personally and in performance. We arethankful to FOM and the Oak Choir parents for their continued support and vision to help make the visions of theinstructor and students happen throughout the year!

In order to continue this amazing program it is essential that basic revenues are obtained to offset the substantialcosts – hence the need for fundraising activities and donation opportunities. All choir members and their familiesare encouraged to participate fully in these activities – it is more fun, and the program is more successful, wheneveryone works and plays together. As you know, school budgets continue to be very tight, and we are thankfulthe Los Alamitos USD has chosen to continue to invest in hiring arts educators. The choral performance programat Oak is funded 100% by fundraising, the support of the families and the community. In order to continue at thelevel of performance the Oak community is accustomed to, monies are necessary to cover the cost of music, costumes & alterations, props, competition fees, choreography, musicians, transportation, year-end student party,year-end costume cleaning and more. Items paid for through the booster club (Friends of Music – FOM), are theproperty of the Oak Vocal Department and may be collected at the end of the year. You will be informed whenthe items must be returned.

FOR THE 2013-14 SCHOOL YEAR: You can pay your fees/donations in 3 installments over the course of theyear or you can pay in full at the start of the season. The beauty of payment in full is 1) you won’t need toparticipate in fundraising (unless you really want/need to!!) 2) you can then join the booster club at $25 or higherfor choir perks like early notification of ticket sales, free apparel and decals and more! 3) your treasurer won’t bebugging you for payment! 4) you help our program immensely with immediate payment...the district onlyprovides us with a teacher, piano and a classroom...the rest comes from you, our amazing parents!! Below are theamounts you can pay up front, in full to cover our costs, depending on which choir(s) your student is in:

SHOWMEN only: $275 SHOWSTOPPERS only: $275 SHOWSTARS only: $175 SHOWTIME only: $165 SHOWCASE only: $90 SHOWMEN + SHOWCASE or SHOWSTOPPERS + SHOWCASE: $365 SHOWSTARS + SHOWCASE: $265

It’s actually a pretty good deal for singing lessons everyday (sometimes twice a day!), the chance to act ina play, performing/singing/dancing on stage for friends and family, learning musical skills and life lessons, hanging out with choir friends...the list of benefits for our kids goes on and on!!

Compared to the over $3000 that I just spent on my son’s upcoming hockey season and the knowledgethat at the high school, choir transportation fees ALONE are $1500, OAK CHOIR IS A BARGAIN WITHAMAZING BENEFITS FOR OUR STUDENTS! Please consider paying your full donation this year!!

Fund Raising

Suggested donations for each family are based on the choir their child is in. The choirs participate in a differentnumber of events based on available opportunities and the expected level of commitment. Other ways that you canhelp meet the annual budget are through the sale and purchase of tickets to performances, becoming a member ofthe Booster Club, and providing food and water for refreshments. All monies raised directly benefit the programand will ensure that it continues to be filled with unique opportunities, strives for excellence and is a place for Oakstudents to gain confidence and expertise - both as people and performers. We encourage those participating in multipleactivities to participate as much as possible to assist with fundraising for choir. Your donations, along witheveryone's participation in the program and fundraising, will ensure FOM not only meets the annual budget, butkeeps music strong at Oak!

MAJOR FUNDRAISERS: Every family is expected to participate in these fundraisers and monies earnedfrom these activities go directly into the general choir budget.

Prizes are awarded for the 1st-3rd places;; withcash prizes typical. The sale of additional tickets past the first 10 directly benefits the individual seller’s studentaccount.

SHOW TICKETS: In addition to opportunity ticket sales, students are encouraged to sell 5 tickets to each ofthe 4 on-campus concert performances during the year. This insures that our students sing to a full theater forthese concerts.

ADDITIONAL FUNDRAISERS: In addition, the FOM Booster Club provides multiple opportunities foryou to fundraise specifically for your individual student account. These fundraisers are similar to, and notlimited to, the following:

GREAT work at the show! Remember to study for the sightsinging test! Performance tomorrow – bring your costumes! Rehearsal tomorrow – remember your t-shirts and rehearsal clothing! Repertoire report is due tomorrow!

Here are the text codes for each choir so you can sign up for Remind 101.Each choir has their own “subscription” information. Be sure to sign up for the correct choir’s messages.Once you text the “@....” to the 203 #, they will ask you who you are. Please respond with your name or yourchild’s name & your relationship (Sydni’s mom). At the end of the year we remove all the names from each groupand start over.

If your child is in two choirs, please sign up to receive text messages for both groups.

COMPETITIONSCompetitions “raise the bar” for everyone, whether in the performing arts or in sporting events. Growth occurringduring competition season is remarkable. Here are some basic details, compiled from Wikipedia’s description ofShow Choir.

Many show choirs participate in competitions, sometimes called "invitationals" (though most are not invitation-only events). These competitions are often held at the high school where the "host group" attends, though some events are held at auditoriumsor other facilities that can accommodate larger crowds and provide better acoustic performance. The show choir hosts usually donot compete in their own competitions as it is considered an inappropriate conflict of interest. However, they will typicallyperform a non-competitive "exhibition show."

Competitions can be as small as a showcase of a few groups from the immediate geographic area or they can feature many groupsfrom multiple states. Because of the vast difference in sizes of the competitions, they can last a single afternoon or span an entireweekend. Competitions may separate competing choirs into different divisions. These divisions are often determined by age, skill level, size of the school or choir, and/or gender of the participants. The different divisions may take place at a different time, day, or at a different location or venue, though usually within the same school or close geographic area.

The largest of show choir competitions can draw between 3,000 and 7,000 spectators over the course of the event. For approximately the past 25 years, "National Competitions" have become a prized destination for many show choirs. These

events, typically held in a tourist destination such as Orlando, Florida;; Nashville, Tennessee;; Hollywood, California;; Branson,Missouri;; Chicago, Illinois or New York City draw choirs from all over the nation and offer the opportunity for groups tocompete against other choirs from outside their normal circuits. Choirs who take home top honors at a "national competition"often like to declare that they are the "Best in the Nation", though no such award exists from any official governing body. Somenational competitions include: Show Choir Nationals, FAME Events, Showstoppers (now defunct), and Finale Nationals.

Eligibility requirements - Many show choir members are selected by audition where only students with acceptable singing anddancing ability can join. A fee is also usually involved to cover the high expenses of travel and wardrobe, as well as the servicesof professionals, such as arrangers and/or choreographers. Show choirs may practice during school hours, outside of school hours,or a combination of the two depending on the level of support from the associated school. Show choirs, like any activity, require dedication and practice to improve performance.

Most show choir "shows" or "sets" consist of a variety of songs, often including several choreographed, fast-paced pieces and oneslower piece performed with limited or no choreography. This slower number - usually a ballad - exists primarily to showcase theensemble's singing ability. In California, it is a requirement that at least one minute of any one set be sung a cappella (it isusually one full song in the set), though this is not a standard in the rest of the country. More often than not, the a cappellaselection is also the ballad, as it is much easier to sing unaccompanied while holding relatively still. In the Midwest, it isbecoming popular to set one song aside as a "novelty" piece, designed to make the audience laugh.

Competitive performance sets range in length, but are usually timed to total just under seventeen minutes on the West Coast andtwenty minutes in the other regions. Shows consist of, but are not limited to, approximately five songs.

At Oak: ShowStoppers & ShowMen have been competing for about four years. They have competed at theForum Festival, Travis Ranch “Encore” Competition as well as Los Alamitos’ Xtravaganza being their largestcompetition. As a pre-competition clinic, the groups also attend John Muir Middle School’s “Overtures”. Theschools we have primarily competed against are: John Muir Middle School, David Starr Jordan MS, LutherBurbank MS and Travis Ranch MS. This year we hope to perform & compete at: “Overtures”, Travis Ranch“Encore”, Forum Festival, John Burrough’s Music ShowCase and Xtravaganza.

Parent Support! The performers need a high showing of support! It is part of the “competition game”.Supporters are encouraged to wear Oak Choir Apparel. Tickets for each event are available...please purchaseearly (FOM will let you know when they are available!). Certain competitions sell out very quickly.
