Making Oasis Living Green

HARVESTING THE SUN Solar Powered Canopy & Charging Station

Turn-key Photovoltaic Shade System With Dual-Axis Tracking

•  Solar cell panels generate electricity from both direct sun exposure, and from reflected light from below

•  Two-sided panels that can absorb light from both sides of the panel. The system can generate 19.1 Watts on a ‘standard’ day.

•  Canopy rotates in with the direction of the sun

•  Electric charging stations used for electric cars, bikes & segways, phones and other devices

•  Built-in lockers with 120 AC outlets

•  Batteries charge the LED lights that emit more direct light and limit the light pollution

HEATING AND COOLING Dynamic Integration

•  Passive Solar Design + Dynamic Integration with HVAC = lower cost & energy efficiency

•  Dynamic integration: iterative process that tests the HVAC system selection criteria by examining system performance through operating strategies & performance requirements.

•  The early involvement of architects and HVAC specialists during the design process in our project will produce a more ideal system.

•  Constant monitoring of our HVAC system will also produce a more energy efficient system.

HEATING AND COOLING Solar Thermal

•  A portion of the photovoltaic solar on the roof will be used to heat the water & central heating

•  The California Solar Initiative Thermal Program offers cash rebates of up to $500,000 for solar water heating systems on commercial properties

WATER RECYCLING Blackwater Treatment System

Aquacell Blackwater Recycling:

•  Recycling treatment can reduce the daily water intake by 50%

•  The process: untreated wastewater (grey and black) is collected from the residences and is sent to the buffer tank. It is then transferred to the Aquacell for treatment.

•  Once treated, the final tank stores the purified water, ready for use on community gardens, for toilet flushing, and laundry.

Occupancy:

•  Site expected to serve approximately 200 people per day

•  Average person consumes about 100 gallons per day

•  The site is expected to average 20,000 gallons of water intake per day

•  Owner will collaborate with the City of Newport Beach to explore options to make a sustainable living center more environmentally friendly to the local community

•  Potential avenues for partnership: •  Tax Incentives Public Financing Development Fee Credits/Waivers •  Land Write Downs Tax Deduction Repayment Options

•  Green Climate Fund An example of funds that can be funneled through municipalities, such as the City of Newport Beach, to be used to for green projects, such as Oasis Living Center

FINANCING SOLUTIONS Solar Financing

•  2011 Commercial 30% Federal Tax Grants California businesses can receive a 30% Federal Investment Tax Credit for each solar electric power system and solar hot water heating system installed in 2011, qualifying solar energy projects should begin construction during 2011.

•  2011 Tax Depreciation Accelerated depreciation + bonus depreciation (2010-2012). A 100% bonus depreciation is available for 2011; in 2012, the bonus portion of the accelerated depreciation schedule goes to 50%.

•  Solar Federal Grant A Federal Grant can be obtained for up to 30% of the basis of the property for solar energy. Eligible solar-energy property includes equipment that uses solar energy to generate electricity, to heat or cool a structure under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009
