Obituary to Gerard Schuil, President of the European College of Gerodontology On May the 26th 2000 Gcrrit Roelf Eduard Schuil (Gerard), President of the European College of Gerodontology. has passed a\\a\ after a terrible motorbike accident in California. U.S.A.. He has left his uife Irma Scholten and their two children I sther (19) and Frank (16). We were all de\ astated by the new s and would like to express our deep compassion to the famiK. Gerard Schuil was bom on July the 16th 1955 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, but soon mined a\va\ to Groningen where he passed his bo\ hood and adolescence. After he finished school he graduated in 19(S2 from the Dental School of the University of Groningen. Gerard established his own private practice in Heerde where he soon developed a special interest in dental care for the eldcrl). His commitment was highly appreciated in the local nursing home, where he frequently pioN ided care lor the residents. Through his close friendship and collaboration with Cccs dcBaat he also got involved in the scientific side of gerodontology and became in 1990 an acii\e member of the Dutch .Socieiy of Gerodontology. In 1992 he was elected Secretary and held the office since. On an international basis he was active as President-Elect and President of the European College of Gerodontology (ECG) in 1999 and 2000 respectively. He was in the process of organising the upcoming annual meeting K^\ the ECG together with the European Prosthodontic Association (EPA) and the Dutch Society of Gerodontology (NVGe) in his hometown Groningen. His sudden and unexpected death tore him out of the middle '^I'i these activities. We shall remember Gerard as a very nice person and a good friend, an alw ays- helpful colleague and a caring dentist. He had a great sense for justice and backbone to stand up for what he thought was right. We will miss his humour and liveliness. His dedication for Gerodontology and the ECG would have been crowned by his Presidency at the upcoming meeting in August. We shall all work to fulfil his plans in his spirit.
