Objectives for the Lesson

•1. Read over the entire experiment before starting the lab.
• Identify Hazards. Precautions, Protective Gear
•2. Notify the teacher IMMEDIATELY of any questions and/or problems.
•3. Be aware of your surroundings in the lab.
** Top Ten Rules for the Lab **
•4. ALWAYS wear safety goggles and aprons!
– And other protective gear as needed
•5. Always wear the right clothing; closed-toe shoes = NO sandals; tie back long hair
•6. No food or drinks in the lab.
•7. Always clean up lab area after every experiment.
•8. Always wash hands after every lab.
** Rules for the Field **
• Following applicable lab rules and…
• Watch for snakes, ants, bees/wasps, mosquitoes
• Wear long pants, sleeves, hat• Stay hydrated• Use sun screen
1. Check glassware for cracks and chips
2. Wear gloves to pick up broken glass not your bare hands.
3. Place broken glass in proper disposal container.
1. Heat source must be attended while it is turned on.
2. Know where fire blanket and extinguisher are located
1. NO food or drinks in lab. NEVER taste chemicals.
2. Rinse chemicals off immediately if on skin, eyes or clothing
3. Check How to read a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
1. Use flammable chemicals in small & measured amounts
2. Only mix chemicals together as detailed in lab procedure or instructed by teacher
1. Many chemical reactions make gas
2. Avoid inhaling or smelling chemical fumes – waft or use fume hood as directed
1. Seek ways to minimize or recycle chemical waste.
2. ALWAYS dispose of waste properly per lab instructions or your teacher.

Independent Practice
• Complete the Safety Symbol worksheet
• Read, understand, and sign the Lab Safety Contract. Take it home to have your parents/guardians read and sign. Return completed contract by Wednesday (Friday at the latest)
Enrichment Activity (Extra Credit)
• Prepare posters of a lab safety/environmental rule by hand or computer graphics.
• One per student worth 10 points on next test.
