CharacterStrong SpotlightGRADE 8, LESSON 25

• *Project Image: Current CharacterDare.*

• Introduce the current CharacterDare. Answer and clarify any questions about the Dare. Encourage students to modify the CharacterDare if it does not seem to specifically fit your school situation. If necessary, talk about ways you could increase or decrease the challenge of the CharacterDare.

Video (5 minutes):• Ask, “Raise your hand if you have heard of Anne Frank?”

• Say, “Today she is going to be our CharacterStrong Spotlight.”

• Say, “Anne Frank was very close to your age when she went into hiding during WWII because people of her religion were being tortured and killed by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime.”

• Say, “To get to know who she is you are going to watch a very brief biography about her. Think about one character trait Anne possessed that stands out to you.”

• *Play Video: Who Was Anne Frank? (3:32). *

Discussion (7-8 minutes):• Say, “Turn and talk to your neighbor about one character trait Anne Frank possessed

that stood out to you.” Є Have a few volunteers share their answers.

• *Project Image: Anne Frank Quotes* Є Have students volunteer to read them one-by-one.

• Ask, “What is something you notice about all of these quotes?” Є Answer: She remains positive and hopeful during very desperate and terrify-

ing times.

• Reread the last quote to your class, “What is done cannot be undone, but one can prevent it happening again. I don’t think of all the misery but of the beauty that still remains.”

• Ask, “What do you think she means by ‘what is done cannot be undone, but one can prevent it from happening again’?”

Є Explain that she believes we can prevent these unkind and unfair acts from happening again.

Exit Intentionally (1-2 minutes):• Say, “Commit to one of the strategies we discussed to stand up for others and not

remain silent at school or in the community. Share your commitment with your partner/group.” If time, call on volunteers to share their commitment with the class.

Activity - Standing Up for Others (6-8 minutes):• Say, “Anne Frank believed we all need to stand up for those that sometimes cannot

stand up for themselves. It is our job to help prevent unkind things from happening again.”

• Say, “Take out a sheet of paper or your notebook and jot down unkind or unfair things that may be going on in our school.”

• Say, “Choose one of the events or actions you wrote, and write down 2-3 things you can do to prevent those actions from happening again.”

• Brainstorm or give them some healthy and safe ways of standing up for others like: Є Write a note to the one leading the unkind acts Є Encourage the targeted person or group to let them know they are not alone Є Speak to a teacher, counselor, administrator or any trusted adult in the

building about what you are seeing Є In a safe place, let the person who is doing the unkind acts know that what

they are doing is not okay
