The kids at my school are generally extremely well-behaved. Every once and a while though, I find myself having to lay down the law. My basic threat involves sending them to the Principals office (or actually in English they call it Headmaster’s Office), in Spanish known as Despacho.

Nota Cultural

• One day while trying to manage the 6th graders, I threatened to send a student to the principal’s office. In the heat of the moment, I made a mistake in pronunciation and said that I would send the student to the GAZPACHO instead of DESPACHO. I immediately realized that I was threatening to send them to Spanish tomato soup. Needless to say they didn’t take the threat very seriously.
