Monarch Of Egypt | Racing Post

O=Brien Targets Irish Guineas Dozen cont. from p1

Successful in the G1 1000 Guineas and very nearly so in the G1

2000 Guineas at Newmarket--with what was viewed in the latter

as the stable=s second-string--the operation could easily be

celebrating yet another of their fabled whitewashes in an Irish

Classic we have become so used to witnessing down the years.

On official ratings, there is only five pounds between the five

who stepped outside of maiden company in 2019 with >TDN

Rising Star= Monarch of Egypt (American Pharoah) topping them

courtesy of his second in the G1 Phoenix S. Intriguingly, Seamie

Heffernan who has yet to win this particular race has sided with

another >TDN Rising Star= in Lope Y Fernandez (Ire) (Lope de

Vega {Ire}), who came up short behind Pinatubo on two

occasions last term before winning the six-furlong G3 Round

Tower S. here in August. Only sixth in the G1 Middle Park S. at

Newmarket when last seen in October, the bay could be ready

for a step up to a mile and will probably appreciate easy ground

more than some of his stablemates if the rain sets in.

With three defeats after his success in the seven-furlong G3

Tyros S. at Leopardstown in July and the G2 Futurity S. here in

August, Armory (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) has some questions to

answer. His third placing behind the subsequent G1 Poule

d=Essai des Poulains first and third Victor Ludorum (GB)

(Shamardal) and Alson (Ger) (Areion {Ger}) in the G1 Prix

Jean-Luc Lagardere at ParisLongchamp on Arc day was followed

by a poor 20-lengths second to the latter in that track=s seven-

furlong G1 Criterium International later that month, but that

came in sapping conditions which probably exaggerated the

differential between them.

The master of Ballydoyle spoke to the Racing Post on Thursday

about his prospects. AArmory seems to be in good form and we

were happy with him during the winter and through the spring.

AWe have had our eye on this race for him for a long time. Lope

Y Fernandez won the Round Tower over six furlongs, so he is

going into unknown territory with regards to the trip but we

have been happy with his work and he also seems to be in good

form. Vatican City (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) is a lovely horse. This is

only his third run, but we are looking forward to seeing what he

is going to do. We=ve always thought he was a very nice colt.@

ARoyal Lytham (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) can race a little lazily,

which is why we are fitting him with blinkers, but he has never

run beyond six furlongs. He won the July S. over that trip and

he=s a lovely, relaxed horse so we=ll learn a lot about him.

Monarch of Egypt is a horse we=ve always liked. He worked

better than he showed on a racecourse last year, but does have

some nice pieces of form. It=s a big step up in trip for him as

well, but we always felt he=d stay a mile. Fort Myers (War Front)

is a solid horse. He had a very good run in the Champagne S. last

year and we felt the Curragh mile would really suit him. He=s in

good order and this type of race should suit him.@

With Jessica Harrington=s stable beginning this season where

they left off, it is not inconceivable that the Niarchos Family=s

>TDN Rising Star= Free Solo (Ire) (Showcasing {GB}) could also hit

the ground running here.

O=Brien Targets Irish Guineas Dozen cont.

He had Tuesday=s G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial winner

Cormorant (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) back in fourth when scoring by

five lengths on what was to be his juvenile finale at

Leopardstown in July and it is impossible to put a true marker on

his ability at present.

Unsurprisingly, Kingman (GB) has got off to a flyer in 2020 and

His Highness The Aga Khan=s son of the Juddmonte wunderkind

Sinawann (Ire) will be a factor if there is a significant going

change to turn this into more of a test of stamina. His gallant

second to Mogul (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) in the G2 Champions

Juvenile S. over a mile on Leopardstown=s Irish Champions card

marked him as more of a Derby prospect, but trainer Mick

Halford is keen to try this speed test.

AThe horse is in good form and has trained really well, so we=re

happy with him,@ Halford said. AObviously Siskin looks the

obvious one, he=s a very justifiable favourite and then you=ve

always got Aidan. Our fellow has shown a good level of form as a

2-year-old and we felt he was entitled to take his chance. The

Curragh is a stiff track and you=d need to get every yard. It=s

usually a strong gallop and that will certainly play into our

hands.@

Also on the Curragh card is the G3 Coolmore Ten Sovereigns

Gallinule S., which sees the G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud third

Mythical (Fr) (Camelot {GB}) head a Ballydoyle duo taking on

the G2 Beresford S. third Gold Maze (GB) (Golden Horn {GB})

from the Jessie Harrington stable and Scott Heider=s unbeaten

Feb. 28 Listed Patton S. winner Crossfirehurricane (GB) (Kitten=s

Joy) representing Joseph O=Brien. Closing the fixture is the G2

Coolmore Magna Grecia Irish EBF Mooresbridge S., where

seven others.

The field for Saturday evening=s G1 Tattersalls Irish 1000

i250,000 Classic. The Niarchos family=s homebred G1 Prix

Marcel Boussac winner and ante-post favourite Albigna (Ire)

(Zoffany {Ire}) will depart from the outside post in 13, while her

Jessie Harrington-trained stablemate and G3 Oh So Sharp S.

runner-up Valeria Messalina (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire})

has been drawn in stall four. Aidan O=Brien saddles just two for

this year=s renewal, with the G1 Moyglare Stud S. third So

Wonderful (War Front) due to exit from five and the Listed

Montrose Fillies= S. runner-up Peaceful (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})

alongside in six with Seamie Heffernan on board.

Ger Lyons is numerically the strongest, with three

representatives from his Glenburnie stable headed by Even So

(Ire) (Camelot {GB}) who was third in the G3 Park Express S.

before the lockdown at Naas Mar. 23. She has drawn seven,

while Soul Search (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) is in nine and Roca Roma

(Ire) (Australia {GB}) is in 12, with Colin Keane opting for the

latter who is still a maiden after finishing second in a mile

maiden at Leopardstown in October. Donnacha O=Brien has an

early chance of Classic glory via the unbeaten Listed

Staffordstown Stud S. winner Fancy Blue (Ire) (Deep Impact

{Jpn}) and she will become the rookie conditioner=s first runner

in such company coming out of stall 14. The Aga Khan=s >TDN

second career start for the Mick Halford stable, having won in

August over seven furlongs at Leopardstown, and is in the

middle stall in eight.

WHERE DID THEY COME FROM?

Irish 2000 Guineas

By Emma Berry

There's been almost no getting away from You'resothrilling

(Storm Cat) when it comes to the Irish Guineas in recent years.

The sister to Giant's Causeway has conducted an exclusive

relationship with Galileo (Ire) since departing to stud and their

first foal, Marvellous (Ire), won the Irish 1000 Guineas, swiftly

followed by her year-younger brother Gleneagles (Ire), who took

the Irish 2000 Guineas as the middle leg of a Group 1 treble at

three. Taj Mahal (Ire) broke the mould by heading instead to the

Prix du Jockey Club, in which he was fourth, and next in line was

Happily (Ire), who was only third in the Irish 1000 Guineas, but

she already had two Group 1s to her name by then.

The Group 3-winning juvenile Coolmore (Ire) didn't quite live

up to her portentous name, but now we find the mare's current

3-year-old, Vatican City (Ire), among the challengers for this

year's Classic. He is not the only member of the family in the

line-up, however, as he will be facing his own stablemate, Fort

Myers (War Front), a son of his sister Marvellous.

Where Did They Come From? cont.

Armory (Ire)

Galileo (Ire)--After (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire})

A Coolmore homebred who was a very consistent sort last

year, winning his maiden followed by the G3 Tyros S. and G2

Futurity S. Placed efforts behind Pinatubo (Ire), Victor Ludorum

(Ire) and Alson (Ger) in three consecutive Group 1 races last

autumn make him a major player. He is the second foal of his

dam, who was fifth in the Irish 1000 Guineas of 2012.

Fiscal Rules (Ire)

Make Believe (GB)--Gold Mirage (Galileo {GB})

Homebred by his trainer Jim Bolger, Fiscal Rules made a bold

debut when being beaten a head into second by subsequent

2000 Guineas runner-up Wichita (Ire) at The Curragh last

August. From a family which includes the illustrious miler

Goldikova (Ire), his dam was bought from the Breeding Capital

dispersal at Tattersalls in 2010 for 30,000gns and went on to win

the following year over a mile and a half. She is also the dam of

the Group 3-winning stayer Cimeara (Ire) (Vocalised).

Fort Myers

War Front--Marvellous (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})

As mentioned above, his dam won the Irish 1000 Guineas in

2014 and his grandam is a full-sister to Giant's Causeway. Fort

Myers was third to Siskin in the G2 Railway S., and also to Lope Y

Fernandez (Ire) in the G3 Round Tower S. before taking out the

Listed Star Appeal S. at Dundalk and flying to Santa Anita for a

mid-div finish in the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.

Free Solo (Ire)

Showcasing (GB)--Amuser (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})

The Niarchos family is represented by this grandson of their

brilliant treble Group 1-winning miler Six Perfections (Fr). Free

Solo's dam never raced but is a sister to three stakes winners in

Yucatan (Ire), Mount Everest (Ire) and Faufiler (Ire). He won his

maiden easily over a mile last July at Leopardstown after

finishing third to the ill-fated Year Of The Tiger (Ire) on debut.

Lope Y Fernandez (Ire)

Lope De Vega (Ire)--Black Dahlia (GB) (Dansili {GB})

A i900,000 Coolmore purchase at the Arqana August Yearling

Sale, his breeder SF Bloodstock bought his dam, a five-time

winner between seven and 10 furlongs, for 40,000gns back in

2010 and she has proved a good buy. Her son by Dream Ahead,

Dark Vision (Ire), won the G2 Vintage S. and Lope Y Fernandez

ran third in that same race behind Pinatubo (as well as having

finished second to him in the Chesham) before winning the G3

Round Tower S.

Monarch Of Egypt

American Pharoah--Up (Ire) (Galileo {Ire})

The first European runner and winner for the American Triple

Crown hero American Pharoah last season, Monarch Of Egypt

was bred by Ran Jan Racing and was picked up in partnership by

Coolmore and Peter Brant for $750,000 at the Keeneland

September Sale. His dam, a $2.2 million purchase in 2015, was

runner-up to Beauty Parlour (Jpn) in the G1 Poule d'Essai des

Pouliches and won the G2 Blandford S. Monarch Of Egypt didn't

win again after his successful April debut but he was runner-up

to Siskin in both the G2 Railway S. and G1 Phoenix S.

Rebel Tale

Tale Of The Cat--Purr And Prowl (Purim)

A $37,000 Keeneland September purchase by Mags O'Toole,

Rebel Tale won his maiden as a juvenile in May and rounded out

his season by running second to Armory in the G2 Futurity S. and

fourth behind Mogul (GB) in the G2 KMPG Champions Juvenile

S. His dam won over nine furlongs on the turf in the U.S. and his

half-sister, the treble winner La Vale (Freedom Child), was

bought by Joe Foley at the Tattersalls December Mares' Sale last

year for 16,000gns.

Royal Lytham (Ire)

Gleneagles (Ire)--Gotlandia (Fr) (Anabaa)

Like the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches winner Dream And Do

(Ire), Royal Lytham was bred by Haras du Logis Saint German

and was sold by Olivier Carli's farm for i180,000 at the Arqana

August Sale to MV Magnier. Carli raced his Quesnay-bred dam,

who was a listed winner over seven furlongs at three.

The winner of a Curragh maiden over a mile in August, this Aga

Khan homebred was then second to Mogul (GB) in the G2 KPMG

Champions Juvenile S. on Irish Champions Weekend. His dam is

a winning half-sister to dual Derby and Arc winner Sinndar (Ire)

and has three other black-type earners to her credit.

Siskin

First Defence--Bird Flown (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB})

Sets a high benchmark with his four wins from four starts,

culminating in the G1 Keeneland Phoenix S. The only blot on his

copybook came on his sole trip outside Ireland when he was

withdrawn from the G1 Juddmonte Middle Park S. after

becoming unsettled in the stalls. His dam is a grand-daughter of

Monroe, the dam of Xaar (GB), and the dam's half-sister Rising

Tornado has produced the five-time Grade 1 winner Close

Hatches (also by First Defence), who is in turn the dam of GII

Wood Memorial winner and GI Kentucky Derby third Tacitus.

Vatican City (Ire)

Galileo (Ire)--You'resothrilling (Storm Cat)

The winner of a seven-furlong Dundalk maiden in October on

his second and most recent start but, as discussed at the top,

this Coolmore homebred is fully entitled to be given due

consideration on pedigree.

KENZAI CONNECTIONS PONDERING ASCOTTARGET Kenzai Warrior (Karakontie {Jpn}) will attempt to makeamends for a luckless G1 2000 Guineas run at Royal Ascot nextweek, but connections have yet to decide in which race. Last year=s G3 Horris Hill S. winner jumped in the air at thestart of the Guineas before winding up ninth, and holds entriesin both the G1 St James=s Palace S. over that same mile trip andthe G2 King Edward VII S. over 12 furlongs. AI have got to discuss it with his owners and [jockey] JasonWatson, we=ve not made a decision yet--it=s up in the air,@ saidtrainer Roger Teal. AI suppose the question is whether you wantto jump straight up to a mile and a half from a mile. AHe=s totally fine after last week, he didn=t really have a hardtime of it. We put him through the stalls in the week before andhe hardly moved, so I don=t know what it was. Perhaps it wasthe adrenaline of raceday and he just anticipated the start, butunfortunately it was all over in a couple of strides.@

Far Above winning the Palace House S. | Racing Post

Owners will celebrate at home this year | Racing Post

FAR ABOVE INJURED, RETIRED Far Above (Ire) (Farhh {GB}BDorraar {Ire}, by Shamardal), the

eye-catching winner of last weekend=s G3 Palace House S., has

been retired from racing after emerging from that victory with

an injured sesamoid.

AUnfortunately it was the news we didn=t want,@ said trainer

James Tate. AIt=s a small injury, but a particularly awkward one in

a tricky place.@

An 18,000gns yearling turned 105,000gns 2-year-old, Far

Above ran just five times but flashed talent in that short career.

He won three of his four outings last year after debuting in April,

including the Listed Prix Kistena at Deauville in July.

AIt=s been a brilliant but brief career--who knows what could

have been?@ Tate said. AYou all got a glimpse of it in the Palace

House, but from what we saw at home, we know just how good

he could have been. He still wasn=t at 100% on Saturday.

AThe silver lining is that he can have a second career now, at

stud. If he hadn=t won on Saturday that wouldn=t have been

possible.@

ASCOT ANNOUNCES VIRTUAL OWNER

EXPERIENCE Ascot Racecourse has unveiled details of its virtual owner

experience for next week=s Royal Ascot meeting behind closed

doors. The racecourse has launched a Racing Hub that will house

the Turftrax live feed to real time weather data and going stick

readings, access to a 360 degree parade ring camera feed and

full sectionals from each race.

Ascot=s official photographer will photograph every horse in

the parade ring.

Owners will receive a pair of traditional printed Royal Ascot

racecards in advance of racedays, personalised with the name of

their horse. Full racecards will also be digitally produced on the

Racing Hub. Included with the posted racecards will be souvenir

"Royal Ascot At Home" owners badges. Trophies will be sent to

winning owners after the event along with mementoes for

winning trainers and jockeys.

Nick Smith, director of racing and public affairs at Ascot, said,

"Whilst the ultimate experience of being at Royal Ascot sadly

isn't possible this year, we hope that what we are planning will

make ownership at home as special as possible. We are

particularly pleased to be able to provide owners with a feed to

the parade ring, and to be housing all the data that all horsemen

need from real time weather and going reports to post race

sectionals in one, convenient place. We are very conscious of

the loyalty and commitment to the sport that owners have

shown over the past months and when permitted, of course

they will be the first constituents welcomed back to Ascot."

Charlie Liverton, chief executive of the Racehorse Owners'

Association, added, "I am thrilled that Royal Ascot and the ROA

have been able to put together some fantastic initiatives that

help to bring the magic of Royal Ascot home. They have gone to

extraordinary lengths to bring owners virtually in to the

paddock, to speak with their trainers and jockeys and receive

special behind the scenes access, along with personalised

racecards for all those with a horse running. As ever, it will

never replicate being able to attend in person, but rest assured

we are working hard with the BHA and racecourses to get

owners back on course as a priority."

quickened smartly for one flick of Tom Marquand=s persuader

inside the final eighth to deny Different Face (GB) (Exceed and

ESTIJAAB EMBODIESEMIRATES PARK=S

GLOBAL APPROACH

by Bren O'Brien

With its G1 Golden Slipper winner Estijaab (Snitzel) now in foalin the United Kingdom, a new stallion ready to begin his careerat Newgate and racing interests across the world, it's been abusy start to 2020 for Emirates Park. A world away from the hustle and bustle of Rosehill on one ofAustralia's biggest days of racing, Golden Slipper S. winnerEstijaab is embarking on her new career at Adrian and PhilippaO'Brien's Hazelwood Bloodstock farm at Newmarket. The second most expensive yearling filly by three-timeChampion Sire Snitzel, who became that stallion's only Group 1winning 2-year-old daughter, Estijaab would be among the mostvaluable first-season broodmares in the country, had sheremained in Australia. But her owners Emirates Park, who paid $1.7 million for her atthe 2017 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, opted to send Estijaab to theUnited Kingdom in January to be mated with the legendaryFrankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and become the latest member of itselite Northern Hemisphere broodmare band, which is basedwith Hazelwood. Having visited Frankel at Juddmonte Farms in February,Estijaab got in foal to the unbeaten champion at her firstattempt and Emirates Park is now awaiting the arrival of whatshall be a very valuable first foal.

Estijaab, who is herself out of a Group 1-winning mare in

Response (Charge Forward), was joined on her trip by the

multiple Group 2-winner Shumookh (Dream Ahead {USA}), who

began her breeding career with a visit to Darley's Night Of

Thunder (Ire) at Kildangan Stud in Kildare.

The duo forms a key plank in the Emirates Park strategy of

mixing the strength of its Australian-bred broodmare band with

the elite sires of the Northern Hemisphere with a view to racing

its best stock in Europe, the United Kingdom and Ireland.

"We want to breed to race up there for Emirates Park Principal

His Excellency Nasser Lootah," Emirates Park General Manager

Bryan Carlson told TDN AusNZ.

"All his friends race up there, so we can do that and access

those better stallions up there like Frankel and Kingman (GB)

and the like. Some of those fillies we may breed up there will

come back, but it gives us access to those bloodlines.

"The mares we sent overseas this year are going well. Estijaab

went to Frankel and she went in foal first time and she is doing

very well. Similarly, Shumookh got in foal to Night Of Thunder

which was good."

Night Of Thunder has backed up excellent results from his first

crop in the Northern Hemisphere, where he had seven stakes

winners, to produce eight winners from 13 starters from his sole

Australian crop, including two stakes winners.

"He's just doing so well as a sire," Carlson said of the son of

Dubawi (Ire). "He's become one of the hottest young sires in the

Northern Hemisphere at the moment."

Emirates Park cont.

Carlson said the intention as that Estijaab would remain in the

United Kingdom for two or three years before returning home

to Australia.

Among the other mares in the Newmarket band is the

half-sister to Darley stallion Sepoy, Necklace (Eavesdropper

{USA}), as well as Shumookh's half-sister Shahad (Fastnet Rock).

Shumookh and Shahad are out of one of the most famous

Emirates Park products in the triple Group 1 winner Shamekha

(Secret Savings {USA}).

Improving Quality and Sourcing a Stallion... They complement the much bigger broodmare band of around

60 that Emirates Park has in Australia. Carlson said the strategy

was to continue improving their stock in both hemispheres.

"We try to upgrade that every year. The aim is to keep

upgrading, preferably from ones we breed ourselves but if we

find something at the sales we really like, we will buy it and add

that in as well," Carlson said.

Emirates Park has been quiet at the yearling and broodmare

sales so far in 2020, with just one purchase from the recent

Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale, the Street Cry (Ire) mare Set

The Limit.

It did however purchase a stallion in Tassort in conjunction

with Newgate, where the son of Brazen Beau will stand in 2020

for a first-season price of $11,000 (inc GST).

"We think Brazen Beau is doing a good job and it was a good

opportunity to work in with Newgate," Carlson said.

"Newgate has been telling us that he has been well-received.

We will plan to send around 15 or so of our mares to him. We

will work out which ones over the next month or so."

Searching for Black-Type... On the racetrack, Emirates Park continues to seek black type

with its better-bred fillies and this weekend will have Shuhood (I

Am Invincible) contest the G2 Magic Millions The Roses at

Doomben.

She is out of one of those Hazelwood-based mares in Shahad,

who had two foals in Australia before she headed overseas to

visit Galileo in 2017.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Shuhood has

required plenty of patience, but she put together back-to-back

wins at Canterbury and Hawkesbury in April and May before

finishing a close-up fourth in her first attempt at stakes company

in the Listed Pam O'Neill S. at Doomben last time out.

"She's been a funny filly. She has always shown something, but

it has taken until now to get her going," Carlson said.

"The distance is probably the question on Saturday. That's the

main thing. She is fit and ready to go.

The favourite (Vanna Girl) looks hard to beat, but the aim is to

get a bit of black type.

"We will re-assess after the race to see if she comes back as a

4-year-old, or she goes to stud."

Emirates Park has also spread its racing wings to Western

Australia and two weeks ago got its first-ever winner in the state

with the Simon Miller-trained Nuhad (Dream Ahead {USA}).

The 2-year-old filly was a dominant winner on debut and

fronts up for her second start on Saturday in the opening race,

where she is currently favourite.

"That's our plan no matter where our horses are running. To

try and find those good females from nice families and get those

wins and get that black-type," Carlson said.

NOT THIS TIME OFFSPRINGON TOP AGAIN AT OBS

by Christie DeBernardis & Jessica Martini

A filly by freshman sire Not This Time topped Wednesday=s

session of the Ocala Breeders Sales Company=s Spring Sale at

$1.35-million and the young Taylor Made stallion came out on

top once again Thursday with one of his son=s bringing the day=s

highest price of $700,000. Consigned by Randy Bradshaw, Hip

1283 was purchased by Donato Lanni on behalf of owner

Michael Lund Petersen. Like the toppers from the first two days,

Hip 1283 was originally slated for Fasig-Tipton=s Gulfstream Sale.

A[The market has] been very spotty,@ Bradshaw said. AIt=s been

that way for a long time, but even more so at this sale. We just

need to get the confidence back, get the stock market back and

all of that stuff. The horse business is going to be just fine. One

thing about horsepeople is that we are optimistic and if you give

us a shot, we=ll go out and buy a horse and keep it going.@

A total of 149 juveniles changed hands Thursday for gross

receipts of $10,748,500 compared to last year when 170 horses

brought $17,968,500. The average decreased from $105,697

last year to $72,138 this season and the median was also down

from $58,500 to $40,000.

AAnother day of trade, some nice horses sold and there are

some nice horses still left to sell,@ said OBS Director of Sales Tod

Wojciechowski. AYou can=t really compare it to last year because

we are in uncharted waters, but it has picked up a little each

day.@ Cont. p3

15 MONTHS IN THE MAKING, MORE

RESTRICTIVE WHIP RULES FINALLY PASS IN

CALIFORNIA by T. D. Thornton

After initially being deadlocked on a Thursday vote to put off

implementing anti-whipping regulations that have been

repeatedly delayed since first proposed in March 2019, the

California Horse Racing Board (CHRB) finally voted 4-2 to pass a

rule that will prohibit a jockey from striking a mount more than

six times during a race, and then only in an underhanded

position with no more than two strikes in succession using whips

that must meet new CHRB standards to soften the blows.

Representatives from the Jockeys' Guild, plus California riders

Mike Smith and Aaron Gryder, repeatedly advocated for the

board to wait at least one more month before voting on the rule

to allow more time for a proposed national whip standards rule

to come to fruition. Cont. p11

OBS Spring Sale cont. from p1 Over the first three days of selling, 452 juveniles have sold for

$39,550,000 with an average of $87,500 and a median of

$50,000. At the conclusion of the third session last term, 519 2-

year-olds had summoned $56,217,000 for an average of

$108,318 and a median of $65,000.

Bloodstock agent Steve Young has signed the ticket on four

juveniles thus far, including two colts Thursday. He said that

bidding was still competitive on the top horses.

AI think there is a lot of competition for the good-looking, quick

horses with good mechanics that pass the vet,@ said Young. AI

think that for the horses that are perceived to be a tick under

that, it gets dicey. It is the same way it=s been for a while. It

doesn=t mean the non-elite horses aren=t good horses. I think

when you like a horse and go up to the ring to buy it, there is

someone up there waiting for you.@

Tonja Terranova, wife of New York-based trainer John

Terranova, made just one purchase, but she made it count,

going to $425,000 for a son of Quality Road (Hip 628). She

expressed similar sentiments to other buyers earlier in the week

about the lack of a middle market.

AThe good horses have brought money,@ Terranova said. AThe

middle market is a little bit weaker right now, but you still have

to pay for the good horses. I think overall there are a lot of nice

horses. You have to step up to get the good ones.@

$700,000 to acquire a colt (hip 1283) by the Taylor Made

stallion on behalf of Michael Lund Petersen. The bay juvenile will

be trained by Bob Baffert.

ABob decided at the last minute to come to the sale with [son]

Bode and his wife Jill and this was a horse that we both liked

very much,@ Lanni said. AHe jumped through all the hoops. The

hoops were high, as usual, but he did it all really well. He=s a nice

horse and hopefully we get lucky.@

Petersen has campaigned Grade I winner Mor Spirit

(Eskendereya) and graded winner Mucho Gusto (Mucho Macho

Man). He is currently represented on the racetrack by >TDN

Rising Star= Gamine (Into Mischief). All were purchased as 2-

year-olds by Lanni and trained by Baffert.

AHe=s a really good guy and he loves the game,@ Lanni said of

Petersen, who is a founder of Pandora Jewelry. AWe=ve had

some luck for the guy.@

Not This Time has already had two winners at the track and his

stock has continued rising at OBS this week. Also Thursday, he

had a filly bring $200,000 (hip 869) from Belladonna Racing.

AI never know what to expect--no one knows what to expect,

but I am glad to see that there is a freshman sire out there that

is throwing some precocious horses,@ Lanni said of Not This

Time=s success.

Hip 1283, who worked a furlong last week in :10 flat, was

consigned by Randy Bradshaw. He is out of Business Decision

(Put It Back) and his second dam is graded stakes winner In

Conference (Dayjur).

AWe=ve been waiting to sell this horse all day,@ Bradshaw said.

AWe knew he was special and we would probably get a good bit

of money for him. And everything worked out.@

Bradshaw purchased the bay colt for $200,000 at last year=s

Fasig-Tipton sale and his price tag Thursday matched the

$700,000 Bradshaw sold subsequent Baffert trainee and GI

Arkansas Derby winner Nadal (Blame) for at last year=s Fasig-

Tipton Gulfstream sale.

AHe was a big, athletic horse,@ Bradshaw said of hip 1283. AHe=s

probably 16.3 now, but for as big a horse as he is, he is as

athletic as a horse gets. He=s amazing. Like Nadal, same

purchase price, same trainer, so hopefully we will have the same

result.@

The colt sold in the Spring Sale=s supplemental section and had

originally been targeted for the Gulfstream sale.

AThank goodness he didn=t get any bigger,@ Bradshaw said of

the impact the delay had caused. AHe=s a bigger horse than I

generally buy. So was Nadal, so maybe I need to start buying

bigger horses. But he=s just a special horse. I=ve never been

around a horse that big who is that athletic.@

During Wednesday=s second session of the OBS sale, Bradshaw

sold a son of Empire Maker (hip 1258) for $700,000.

AWe had a great day today and we sold the Empire Maker

yesterday,@ Bradshaw said. AAnd we have a Speightster (hip

1306) we are selling tomorrow that we really like. So if we can

get a little lucky tomorrow, we are going to be golden.@

Quality Colt Headed to New York

Thursday and he will head to New York after Tonja Terranova,

wife and right-hand to trainer John Terranova, signed the

$425,000 ticket. She was acting as agent for an undisclosed

client.

AWe knew we were not going to get him cheap for sure, being

a Quality Road with a nice page and good breeze,@ Terranova

said on her drive back to the airport to return to the Empire

State. AWe knew we were going to have to pay for him.@

Bred by Peter Blum Thoroughbreds, the colt, already named

Original, is out of the unraced Empire Maker mare

Unforgettable, a half-sister to GSWs Academy Award

(Secretariat), Statuette (Pancho Villa) and Good Mood (Devil=s

Bag). A $250,000 FTKOCT purchase by Marc Tacher, Hip 628

breezed in :21 1/5 for the de Merics.

AHe is a really well-balanced colt,@ Terranova said. AHe breezed

really nice on the synthetic and we saw videos of him breezing

on the dirt. I got here on Monday and just every day he was a

cool customer. He never turned a hair. He came out and walked

great every single day and went in the ring like a champ.@

Ramiro Restrepo | Coglianese

Another Marquee Year for Restrepo

It was always going to be hard for Ramiro Restrepo=s Marquee

Bloodstock to duplicate its right-out-of-gate pinhooking success

of 2019--which included the blockbuster sale of future Grade I

winner Structor (Palace Malice)--but the operation had another

profitable year capped by the sale of a filly by No Nay Never (hip

710) for $430,000 to Team Casse at OBS Thursday. Restrepo was

part of a partnership of American buyers who had purchased

the filly for $148,000 at Arqana in 2018.

AI was overseas doing Tatts and Deauville winter for the first

time last year,@ Restrepo, whose family involvement in racing

goes back five generations, explained. AI went on an exploratory

mission just to see the market. I was there with a couple of

other Americans, they are all sharp guys, they know the game

and we all got together to buy the filly.@

The original plan was to offer the filly as a yearling at the

American sales, but the team ultimately decided to give her

extra time and she was sent to Jim and Torrie Gladwell=s Top

Line Sales to prepare for the juvenile sales.

AIt wouldn=t have done her justice to sell her as a yearling,@

Restrepo said. AWe chose Jimbo and Torrie, who some of the

guys have had great luck with before. They are awesome

people. I went to the farm two or three times over the winter

and saw the progression of this filly and it was jaw dropping. It

was like go-go gadget. It was so awesome to see how they

brought her along. They did a monster job.@

Of Thursday=s result, Restrepo said, AThe group is thrilled. I give all the credit to my partnersBthey are great people, great friends. They are successful in this business and it was a cool result for all of us.@

Earlier in the week, Marquee Bloodstock sold a colt by Frosted (hip 96) for $185,000. The youngster was purchased with another partner for $80,000 at last year=s Keeneland September sale.

In partnership with Joe Pickerell of Pick View, Restrepo sold a Mineshaft colt (hip 54) for $150,000. He had been a $105,000 Fasig-Tipton July yearling. At OBS March, the partners sold an Outwork colt for $125,000. He had been a $65,000 Fasig-Tipton October purchase.

Restrepo, who also serves as Fasig-Tipton=s South Florida representative, had dabbled with pinhooks over the years before kicking off Marquee Bloodstock, a nod to his past life in the nightclub industry, last year. His first purchase under the new banner was a son of Palace Malice acquired for $160,000 at the 2018 Keeneland September sale. The colt resold to Mike Ryan at OBS last March for $850,000 and, named Structor, he went on to win the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf.

AYou have to give Joe all the credit,@ Restrepo said of Structor=s sale success. AThe way he brought him along to peak for the sale was just magical and to have him breeze in such a professional and awesome manner with a dynamite gallop out was so exciting.@

Restrepo continues, AAnd then, all of a sudden, you start seeing every famous big name bloodstock agent that=s had all this success and they are coming back to seem him over and over and over again. It validates all of the time that you put in looking for these yearlings when you are walking sales grounds for hours and hours trying to pick one out.@

As proud as he is of the sales ring success, Restrepo is clearly just as proud to see his sales graduates go on to success on the racetrack.

AI really want them to go on and become awesome race horses,@ he said. AWhen something you pick out goes on to win, that=s the Visa commercial. That=s priceless. That=s the validation as a horseman.@

Marquee sold four 2-year-olds this year, but Restrepo won=t confine himself to any structure going forward.

AI never say this is going to be the price point or the number,@ he said. AI do it by feel. You don=t want to buy just to buy. If you

TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 7 OF 19 • THETDN.COM FRIDAY • JUNE 12, 2020

Steve Young | Sarah Andrew

only buy two, that=s what you end up with. If you buy 10, you

buy 10. I don=t have a preconceived idea of how many we need

to buy every year. You want to buy the right ones.@

And throughout it all is the common theme of teamwork and

making the right connections.

AI=m a big believer in partnerships,@ Restrepo said. AJoe

Pickerell has been my rock through all of this. He is my main

consignor partner and partner in purchasing the horses with as

well. We cruise the sales grounds together and whenever there

is an interesting horse we kind of decide on the spot what kind

of split we might want to do.@

He added, ASurround yourself with the right people and it

shows you who you are. It=s so important to partner up with

people like Joe, Jimbo and Torrie. You need to combine forces in

this game because it=s so tough. This is such a hard game. There

is strength in numbers.@

Restrepo concluded, AIt=s been a really cool two-year run.

Hopefully these horses go on and do their thing.@

Young Stays Busy at OBS

It was back to business as usual for Steve Young in Ocala this

week. The bloodstock agent kept himself quite busy, purchasing

four juveniles through the first three days of the OBS Spring

Sale.

The former trainer picked up his first juvenile during the

opening session, taking home a daughter of Street Boss (Hip

286) for $230,000. Bred by Calumet Farm, the :9 4/5 breezer

was purchased by Grassroots Training & Sales for $37,000 as a

KEESEP yearling. Her dam Pride of Place (A.P. Indy) is a full-sister

to MGISW Flashing, dam of SW & MGSP Floodlight (Medaglia

d=Oro).

AShe is a very strong Street Boss filly out of an A.P. Indy mare

from a good family,@ Young said. AHer dam is a full-sister to a

multiple Grade I winner in New York. She went :9 4/5 the right

way. We were lucky to get her and I think she can really run.@

On day two, Young went to $250,000 for a Quality Road colt

(Hip 575) from the Woodford Thoroughbreds consignment,

which is having a very good sale. This was the William

Humphries and Altair Farms-bred colt=s second time in the

Woodford consignment, having RNA=d for $225,000 at the Fasig-

Tipton Saratoga Yearling Sale last year. Breezing in :10 3/5, the

bay is a half to stakes-placed Fashion Runaway (Old Fashioned)

and Pronouncement (Declaration of War).

AHe is a very good Quality Road colt,@ Young said. AHe got a

slower than perfect run to the pole, breezing in :10 3/5 and he

re-broke after the wire. He is a very fit horse. I usually don=t buy

horses by time, but this horse is very fit and the time is not

indicative of his ability or his quickness. He is a very nice horse.@

Young snapped up two in quick succession Thursday, starting

with a $330,000 Empire Maker colt (hip 826), who breezed in

:10 1/5. Bred by Oussama Aboughazale=s International Equities

Holdings, the bay is out of a half-sister to MGSW & MGISP

Protonico (Giant=s Causeway). Gary Smith=s English Range Farm

purchased the colt for $85,000 at Keeneland September and he

was consigned by Envision Equine here.

AHe was a very good-moving, quick Empire Maker from a deep

Sumaya, South American family,@ Young said. AHe is out of a

half-sister to Protonico and the third dam was a Horse of the

Year in Chile [Wild Spirit (Chi)], who came to America for Bobby

Frankel. There is dirt and pace all through his page and he

showed that on the racetrack.@

Young was back at it just three hips later, securing a son of

More Than Ready (Hip 829) for $175,000. Bred and consigned

by Ocala Stud, the :21 1/5 breezer is a half to champion Musical

Romance (Concorde=s Tune), MSW & MGSP Forevamo (Uncle

Mo) and Vuelve Ruben M. (Concerto), a three-time champion in

Puerto Rico following his import from the U.S.

AOnce again, he was a horse that lit up the racetrack,@ Young

said. AHe is a 16-hand More Than Ready from a tick older mare,

but he does not look like an older mare=s foal. He is an awfully

well-bought horse at that price.@

Young was also connected to one of the top-priced hips on day

two, a $700,000 colt by Empire Maker (Hip 1258). The

horseman purchased the bay for an undisclosed client for

$275,000 at KEESEP. --@CDeBernardisTDN

McGreevy Strikes for Breeze Easy

Tom McGreevy joined the team at Mike Hall and Sam Ross=s

Breeze Easy last month and is scouting sales horses for the

operation for the first time this week in Ocala. Breeze Easy made

its biggest purchase of the Spring Sale when going to $430,000

to acquire a filly by Curlin (hip 847) from the de Meric Sales

consignment.

ARight now, the only thing we=ve done is put our hand up,@

McGreevy said laughingly. AYou=ll have to call me back next year

and we=ll know how we did.@

The filly is out of Canadian champion Catch the Thrill (A.P.

Indy) and is a half-sister to stakes placed Chic Thrill (Smart

Strike). Her second dam is Canadian champion Catch the Ring

(Seeking the Gold).

AShe is a typical, Classic two-turn filly,@ McGreevy said. AThis is

my first sale with Breeze Easy and that=s what they want. She

sure looks the part.@

McGreevy admitted the filly=s final price was no surprise to the

team.

AFor a Curlin who looks like that, you=ve got to expect a price

like that,@ he said.

The filly was bred by Sam-Son Farm and was purchased by de

Meric Sales for $180,000 at last year=s Keeneland September

sale.

Also this week, Breeze Easy purchased a filly by Midnight Lute

(hip 266) for $150,000 and a colt by Hard Spun (hip 380) for

$45,000.

AIt=s the same everywhere, I don=t care what the sale is and

what the economy is, the really good horses are going to sell

good,@ McGreevy said of the market. AThat=s not going to

change.@

While McGreevy scouts the horses back at the barns, Hall and

Ross are doing their bidding on the internet, an option offered

for the first time at the sale this year.

AThey are bidding on the internet,@ McGreevy explained. AThey

send me back to the barns to find the horses. That=s fine with

me.@ @JessMartiniTDN

A Pair of Fillies for Promenade

Bloodstock agent David Meah purchased a pair of fillies

destined for the Promenade Bloodstock Wednesday in Ocala,

although one of the juveniles never made it to the sales ring.

Meah was in the back ring to bid on hip 353, but couldn=t find

the daughter of American Pharoah.

AI was in the back ring looking for her, I saw 354, 355 and I

thought, >What happened here,@ Meah said with a laugh. AThey

TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 10 OF 19 • THETDN.COM FRIDAY • JUNE 12, 2020

SESSION TOPPERSdidn=t take her out of the sale until five minutes before. Literally

I found out in the back ring that the horse wasn=t coming in. But

I saw Nick de I Meric and we worked a deal out.@

The bay filly, who worked a furlong in :10 3/5 last week, is a

daughter of graded stakes winner Renee=s Titan (Bernstein), a

mare Meah knows well.

AI used to ride the mother for Doug O=Neill, Renee=s Titan, so I

knew the family and knew how tough and hardy that filly was,@

Meah explained. AWe liked that she looks like she could

potentially get two turns and she had a bit of a turfy look about

her, too. Which was kind of nice to see because obviously on the

dam=s side it=s all dirt.@

Meah was back in action later to acquire an Irish-bred

daughter of No Nay Never (hip 421) for $350,000 from the Top

Line Sales consignment. Out of stakes-placed Seeking Solace

(Exceed and Excel {Aus}), the filly is a full-sister to multiple

Group 1 winner Ten Sovereigns (Ire).

AWe loved her,@ Meah said of the filly. AShe is an absolute

queen. We were delighted to get her for that. We were

prepared to spend a little bit more, so we were very happy

when the hammer came down at $350,000.@

While Meah was bidding in the U.S., his English-based partner

in Meah/Lloyd Bloodstock, Jamie Lloyd, was coordinating with

his Promenade Bloodstock clients.

AThey are big clients of Jamie=s,@ Meah said of Promenade. AHe

has their mares, he foals them out. He does their breeding. He

does everything for them. I just do the bidding over here for

them.@

While both fillies were purchased to race, the long-term goal is

for them to part of Promenade=s broodmare band.

AThese guys want to race, but at the end of the day, if they can

win a Grade I, they are not selling them, they are going to breed

out of them,@ Meah said. AThey want to put a strong broodmare

band together. Their end game is to have good-pedigreed fillies

to race and then once they are done, they will be breeding

them.@

While Meah was adding to its potential broodmare band in

Florida, Promenade was enjoying a trip to the winner=s circle in

England as the 3-year-old filly Ascraeus (GB) (Poet=s Voice {GB})

broke her maiden for trainer Andrew Balding at

Wolverhampton.

Meah agreed there were plenty of opportunities to buy quality

at a discount this week in Ocala.

AI think there is a lot of value to be had here,@ he said.

AThankfully I have a great team who have been short-listing and

they have been here since the beginning of the breeze show.

We have lots of notes on all of the horses. There is definitely

value to be had if you are out there doing your homework.@

Whip Rules Finally Pass in California cont. from p1 But in a contentious meeting that stretched nearly seven

hours, CHRB chairman Gregory Ferraro, DVM, spearheaded the

push to once and for all settle the whip rule based on the

rationale that he believes no such national standard is actually

forthcoming, and that California should be a leader and not a

follower when it comes to reforming how racehorses are

treated.

"I don't believe you're going to see a national rule," Ferraro

said. "I would like a national rule, but I don't think it's going to

happen. It's definitely not going to happen with any speed at all.

It could be years. This board has a mandate from the governor

to make reforms in racing that contribute to the welfare of the

horse. We've been talking about this crop rule for two years. I

think it's time to stop procrastinating and pass a rule. We have a

good rule. We worked hard on it.

"If we're going to have some leadership in California, we need

to pass this rule and let the rest of the nation follow our lead,"

Ferraro said prior to the vote. "We're never going to please the

jocks. They don't want to do anything but keep the status quo.

We appreciate their argument. But it's not going to fly in the

face of the public demand that we quit hitting these horses."

Shane Gusman, an attorney representing the Jockeys' Guild,

testified prior to the vote that whipping guidelines based on

public perception would lead to on-track catastrophes and

would doom the sport in California.

"We're concerned that it's not going to work, and that there's

going to be real safety issues when a jockey is unable to perform

his or her job," Gusman said. "What will happen is you're going

to get an accident, and either a jockey is going to get hurt or a

horse is going to go down. And that is not what your intent is

here. I know that. But we're concerned that the way this rule is

crafted, that's what's going to happen.

"[The rule] is not based on what's best for the situation. It's

based on perception," Gusman said. "You're going to end racing

in California. It's just going to happen if you go down this road of

trying to regulate perception rather than reality."

In addition to the above-mentioned restrictions, the newly

amended version of CHRB Rule 1688 will also prohibit the use of

the riding crop during morning training and after the finish of

races.

According to the CHRB meeting information packet, the

correct uses of the riding crop will now include "showing or

waving the crop without touching the horse...and tapping the

horse on the shoulder with the crop in the down position."

The new rule will also establish "a maximum fine of $1,000 and

minimum suspension of three days for riding in a manner

contrary to the rule."

There will be no penalty if the stewards determine that the

use of the riding crop was "necessary for the safety of the horse

or rider."

Terence Meyocks, the president and chief executive officer of

the Jockeys' Guild, noted that work is progressing in other

jurisdictions, particularly among a coalition of mid-Atlantic

region tracks, to come up with a standardized version of

whipping rules that have been crafted with the input of riders in

mind. He explained that he would like to see California on board

with any proposed rule that might result from those multi-party

discussions in the next few weeks.

"The Jockeys' Guild and riders today need a national rule,"

Meyocks said. "I think we're so much closer to a national rule in

the United States, and I think that this is our best chance.... It's

the Guild's request at this time to ask for an extension of no

more than four to six weeks to see if we can reach an

agreement on the riding crop in the United States."

But Scott Chaney, the CHRB's new executive director, told

commissioners before the vote that he didn't buy that line of

reasoning.

"This idea about a national standard is not a 'thing.' It just

doesn't exist," Chaney said. "I guess maybe we're talking about

some agreement between the Jockeys' Guild and the safety

coalition. But that's not a national standard. That's just an idea

that a sub-group of the country has. It would require every

other state to pass a rule, which just is not going to happen."

Prior to passing the new rule, the CHRB first voted unanimously

to codify the standards that mandate a more humanely

constructed riding crop.

Initially, the standards were designed to incorporate the

specifications for the 360 Gentle Touch riding crop, which is the

design manufactured by retired Hall-of-Fame jockey Ramon

Dominguez. But the version passed on Thursday was rewritten

to just outline the specifics of the whip a jockey can carry. It

does not mandate that riders use a whip made by any specific

manufacturer.

After passing that measure, the CHRB took up the in-race

whipping rule itself, which turned out to be much more

complicated.

After hearing lengthy and often repetitive testimony from the

jockeys and the Guild about the need to wait a bit more, several

commissioners seemed inclined to do just that.

Commissioner Alex Solis, a retired Hall-of-Fame jockey, made

the motion to table voting on the new anti-whipping rule until

the July CHRB meeting. But the six commissioners deadlocked

on this motion, with commissioners Solis, Dennis Alfieri, and

Oscar Gonzales voting to wait another month, while

commissioners Ferraro, Wendy Mitchell, and Damascus

Castellanos voted not to table the agenda item.

TDN HEADLINE NEWS • PAGE 13 OF 19 • THETDN.COM FRIDAY • JUNE 12, 2020

Parx | Sarah Andrew

Ferraro then wanted to move the question to approve the

anti-whipping measure as written. But the board had to pause

the meeting to research state law, because nobody on the

conference call immediately knew if another tie would mean the

long-debated rule would be dead on the spot, or if it could be

resurrected again at some point in the future.

After a delay while the CHRB addressed another agenda item,

legal staffers came back with the verdict that if the board

deadlocked on passing the whip reform rules they had worked

on since early 2019, the motion would be dead.

With the gravity of that potential outcome in mind, the

question was moved to approve the anti-whipping rule. It

passed, 4-2, with Solis and Alfieri holding out as the "no" votes.

Now that the new whipping rules have been passed, the CHRB

must submit the proper paperwork to the state Office of

Administrative Law, which will review the technical details,

possibly in time for an effective date of Oct. 1.

PENNSYLVANIA SHUTDOWN LIFTED, PARX

TO REOPEN JUNE 22by Bill Finley

The Pennsylvania Department of Health has given permission

for the state's Thoroughbred and Standardbred tracks to resume

racing.

According to Pennsylvania Thoroughbred Horsemen's

Association President Sal DeBunda, Parx will resume racing June

22. Todd Mostoller, who heads the horsemen's groups at Penn

National and Presque Isle Downs, said he hopes that Penn

National will start racing again June 19. He said it would take

longer to start racing at Presque Isle Downs because there are

not any horses currently stabled there.

"We had hoped to open earlier, but, because of the protocols

that will be in place, people need to be retrained and they have

to buy some new equipment," DeBunda said. "So, it was

impossible to open next week."

Even though the Pennsylvania tracks will be among the last to

reopen after being closed due to the coronavirus, the situation

could have been worse. Last month, Governor Tom Wolf said

that the tracks would not be allowed to race until the counties in

which they are located moved on to the "green phase," which

was when restrictions would be lifted on all businesses in the

state. Bucks County, home to Parx, and Dauphin County, home

to Penn National, are both "yellow" counties. Wolf also caused

problems for the racing and breeding industries when

announcing a budget plan in which he proposed to take $204

million in slots revenues away from racing and use the money

for college scholarships.

DeBunda said the state is still taking the threat of the

coronavirus seriously and that horsemen and backstretch

workers will need to be extra careful.

"The people on the backstretch are going to have to do what

they are supposed to do," he said. "Safety inspectors will be

making rounds and if they see people not following the

protocols they will be reporting it and that could cause them to

shut us down again. It's not like we are open, everything is in the

clear and people can do whatever they want."

For trainers like Butch Reid, the news that the Parx would soon

be running again couldn't have been more welcome.

"Finally. It's been a long time coming," Reid said. "The owners

have been writing checks and they have been really patient. It

starts to wear thin after a while. It's great to see something on

the horizon. We are ready to go. The horses are all trained up

and the track is in great shape."

Pennsylvania Equine Coalition Executive Director Pete

Peterson said that the key to getting the tracks to reopen was to

educate the Wolf administration.

"We had representatives sit down with the Wolf

administration and the Pennsylvania Department of Health and

explained how there were already people at these tracks on the

backside working with the horses and you actually needed

fewer people to run in the afternoon," he said. "It was an

educational process, making them aware this could be done

safely and in compliance with the CDC guidelines. The Wolf

administration was eager to make this work and get us back up

and running."

The first track to reopen in the state will be the Meadows

harness track, which will race Monday.

MGG CLAIM TO SOLOMINI, OTHERS,

THROWN OUT by Sue Finley

Judge Kimberly Bunnell has dismissed the New York-based

lending firm MGG=s attempt to place a lien on the stud fees and

progeny of Solomini, to claim nine breeding rights to American

Pharoah and the broodmare American Cleopatra, according to

Gregory Parsons of States & Harbison, who represented the

owners of Solomini in MGG=s suit.

The ruling was issued June 10 in Fayette, Kentucky Circuit

Court.

Solomini stands at McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds,

where he has bred 127 mares in his initial season at stud.

In January, MGG filed a $23-million lawsuit against Ahmed

Zayat and his financially troubled Zayat Stables.

AThis has been a real headache,@ said Raymond DeStefano, one

of the owners of Solomini. AWe were concerned that with this

cloud hanging over him, we would be lucky to have gotten 60

mares. We ended up with 127 mares as of Saturday, but it still

cost him. I know quite a few people who wanted to breed to

him, including one breeder with three mares, and he said, `I just

couldn=t take a chance.= This was supposed to be over in April

but because of the virus, it was postponed.@

Ahmed Zayat raced Solomini, a four-time GradeI stakes-placed

son of Curlin, and Coolmore Stud bought into the colt. He is now

owned by McMahon, Hidden Lake Farm, DeStefano, Coolmore

and shareholders, having been syndicated when he went to

stud.

AMcMahon, Hidden Lake and I bought into him in December,@

said DeStefano, Aand then this bombshell hit. Coolmore stayed

in for a piece because they liked him so much. We syndicated

him, selling 25 shares, but after this situation, people backed

away, and we ended up only selling 17 or 18.@

DeStefano said that the opportunity cost was hard to swallow.

AThere were a few people who I knew who were going to buy

shares, and didn=t, and others backed out,@ he said. AThat

worked out fine because now we own more of him, and realize

just how popular he is, even under this circumstances. But the

seasons are lost forever. I think he could have bred at least 140

mares. He=s very popular. He=s a Curlin. He bred many stakes-

winning and stakes-producing mares, and mares by Tapit,

Bernardini, etc.Bhuge numbers and an incredible quality of

mares. I would safely say that there=s never been a better book

of mares to a first-year stallion in New York.@

MGG was seeking a lien on any stud fees and the people who

bred to Solomini were Aat risk@ that they wouldn=t be able to

register their foals, DeStefano said. DeStefano and Lou Salerno

were involved in the early success of Belong To Me, who ended

up at Lane=s End Farm after his first three seasons in New York.

Parsons said that Burrell ruled that MGG did not have a valid

claim due to the clear title provisions in the Federal Food

Security Act of 1985, which provides that a purchaser of farm

products takes free of a security interest unless the secured

party has observed certain conditions. Specifically, MGG in this

case would have had to provide notice to the buyer. This notice

comes with specific formal requirements. The second provision

is if the lender has filed what is called an Aeffective financing

statement@ in a Acentral filing@ system certified by the USDA. If

the lender complied with these, filing an effective financing

statement in a central filing system certified by the USDA, the

horses would be sold with the security attached. This system has

been enacted in 13 states. Kentucky is not one of them.

AShe ruled that the Food Security Act applies to these

transactions and because of that, all of these buyers purchased

these assets free and clear of their security interests,@ said

Parsons. AWhen MGG sued McMahon Thoroughbreds, they

were asking the court that the stallion be returned to MGG, the

plaintiff and the lender. And they asked the court to establish a

trust for the proceeds of the stallion. Both of those claims were

based on there being a valid security interest. The judge clearly

followed the law and ruled there was no interest. It was a very

solid ruling based on a clear interpretation.@

The judge also ruled that MGG=s motion for summary

judgment against Zayat Stables on breach of contract was

granted, and that judgment was entered in favor of MGG

against Zayat Stables in the amount of $24,534,166.13, but

added, AMGG, however, shall not take any further action at this

time to collect or enforce this Judgment as it is not final and

appealable.@

IF WE OPEN IT, WILL THEY COME?

by Diana Pikulski

The scope and pace of how the COVID-19 pandemic has

affected daily life, the national economy, and by extension, the

Thoroughbred racing business, is dizzying. For so many, the

hardest aspect of the pandemic-induced crisis is the uncertainty

about if and when things will go back to the old normal. The

pandemic is like nothing we have experienced before and

therefore, we have no models on which to rely. With the

delayed opening of most racetracks, and with others having no

opening day in sight, many people are asking if owners and

trainers who are struggling financially are able to maintain

horses that are not earning money. A May 1 article in The

Boston Globe ran with the headline, "Closed racetracks are

leaving many Thoroughbreds with nowhere to go."

This raised the concern of board members at the Secretariat

Center, which is located in the Kentucky Horse Park. They chose

to take action and be prepared with a positive response to the

question of whether racehorses in need would have a place to

go if their owners could not afford to care for them. The We Are

Here Initiative is a partnership between the Secretariat Center

and the Kentucky Horse Park. The newly formed non-profit is

accepting racehorses whose future careers in racing are not

viable due to circumstances brought on or hastened by the

COVID-19 economic crisis. No donation to surrender will be

required.

"I've seen the industry go through tough times over the years

but this is a unique situation. There are people in the business

who are having trouble making ends meet and for whom

holding on to horses that will not likely be competitive again

may be too much of a burden," said Secretariat Center President

Dorothy Crowell, who spearheaded the new effort. "We created

the We Are Here Initiative because we want to make the right

decision easy."

We Are Here, with the help of commercial van companies, will

provide transportation to the Kentucky Horse Park where stalls

and paddocks await. The Kentucky Horse Park has made

available its many empty showing barns for the surrendered

horses. With help from donors such Hallway Feeds, Rood &

Riddle Equine Hospital, Park Equine, Hagyard Equine Medical

Institute and Big Dee's, the group will evaluate the horses and

care for them until a spot opens up with a Thoroughbred

Aftercare Alliance accredited aftercare organization.

To facilitate easy surrender of the horses, a hotline has been

established. Thoroughbred owners and trainers needing to

rehome their horses can contact the We Are Here hotline at

833-924-6882 (833-WAH-OTTB), which will provide information

regarding the initial steps to be taken. Horses must be registered

Thoroughbreds trained by a licensed trainer in the United

States. Eligible horses much be located at a U.S. licensed

racetrack or training facility, or verified to be eligible for the

2020 racing season; and horses will need a current Coggins and

health certificate.

"When I got the call from Dorothy, I knew it was something

with which I had to help," said Louise Riggio, horse owner and

former Secretariat Center board member. "We cannot leave any

doubt about the fact that the industry is prepared and ready to

care for any racehorse that needs us because of the pandemic."

Eric Hamelback, Executive Director of We Are Here Initiative and

CEO of The National Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective

Association (HBPA), said, "Horsemen and horsewomen are

inherently resilient and supportive of each other in tough times.

We all believe our industry will survive the crisis we are

currently under, but we recognize these are threatening times in

horse racing, not only financially, but in other ways that affect

our day to day lives. Most importantly, through this initiative we

hope all horsemen and horsewomen know and understand, We

Are Here is there to support them. It is our hope that industry

participants on all levels will donate to the care of these horses

to the best of their ability."

For more information about the We Are Here Initiative, to

donate, or to learn more about surrendering Thoroughbreds in

your care, please visit www.wahi.info. To contact the We Are

Here Hotline, please dial 833-WAH-OTTB (833-924-6882).

TEXAS CHAMPIONS TO BE HONORED The 2019 Texas Champion horses and horsemen, which

normally would have been honored during the Texas

Thoroughbred Association's annual meeting and awards

banquet, will instead be showcased online with a video

presentation highlighting their achievements. Due to the

COVID-19 pandemic, the TTA's annual event in March was

postponed.

"We still hope to get our members and award winners

together for an event later this year, but due to the uncertainty

of whether that will happen we decided to put our awards video

online to honor all the winners," said Mary Ruyle, executive

director of the TTA. "We invite TTA members and all horsemen,

horsewomen and racing fans to join us on our Facebook page

(facebook.com/TexasThoroughbredAssociation) on Sunday, June

14 at 5 p.m. Central to watch the premiere of the video, and it

will be available for replay after that."

The equine award winners, topped by Texas Horse of the Year

Mr Money Bags, were announced in January, but the human

award winners are not normally revealed until the awards

banquet.

The human award winners for 2019 are three of the most

accomplished horsemen in the Lone Star State. There are two

recipients of the Allen Bogan Memorial Award, named for the

longtime Texas turf writer and formerly known as the TTA

Member of the Year.

Noted veterinarian Charles W. Graham earned his second

Allen Bogan Award for his efforts to help pass House Bill 2463,

which injects up to $25 million annually into the Texas horse

industry.

" " "

The co-winner of this year's Bogan Award is longtime industry

executive Jeff Hooper. Over a span of decades working in Texas,

Hooper has held top positions at the TTA, National Cutting Horse

Association and Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie.

The T.I. "Pops" Harkins Award for lifetime achievement goes to

native Texan Bret Calhoun. Perennially among the leading

trainers both in Texas and nationally, Calhoun has trained two

Breeders' Cup winners, and more than 3,100 winners with

earnings of nearly $85 million.

EXPENSIVE TAPIT FILLY ROLLS TO RISING

STARDOM AT CHURCHILL

Thoughtfully (Tapit), a $950,000 purchase by Heider Family

Stables last summer at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga, was bet down to

odds-on debuting Thursday at Churchill and ran to the money

with a dominant score to become the latest >TDN Rising Star=.

Showing a quintet of works at Keeneland for trainer Steve

Asmussen capped by a half-mile gate breeze in :47 1/5 (3/29)

June 2, the dark bay was backed at 7-10 and led early before

deferring to sit third. Inching closer past a :22.65 quarter, she

drew on even terms at the top of the lane and took charge soon

after straightening. Given mild encouragement by Ricardo

Santana, Jr., she poured it on in the final furlong and powered

past the wire 8 3/4 lengths to the good of Prodigy Doll (Shanghai

Bobby). The winner is a half to Annual Report (Harlan=s Holiday),

GSW, $186,587; Giant Payday (Giant=s Causeway), MSW,

$331,299; and Flores Island (Giant's Causeway), MSP, $244,070.

Her second dam is GISW Furlough (Easy Goer), a half-sister to

MGISW Dancing Spree (Nijinsky II), GISW Fantastic Find (Mr.

Prospector)--who produced MGISW Finder=s Fee (Storm Cat)--

and Oh What a Dance (Nijinsky II), dam of champion Heavenly

Mike Pegram, Karl Watson and Paul Weitman=s UNCLE CHUCK

(Uncle Mo) is bred to be a runner, and has done nothing to

suggest otherwise in the mornings as he prepares to start his

career for Bob Baffert in this two-turn test. Out of

MGSW/MGISP Forest Music (Unbridled=s Song), the dark bay is a

half-brother to sire Maclean=s Music (Distorted Humor), he of

the 114 Beyer in his only career outing, and GSWs Kentuckian

(Tiznow) and Electric Forest (Curlin). A $250,000 KEESEP buy, he

shows an array of quick works both locally and at Los Alamitos,

including a five-furlong Los Al bullet in :58 4/5 (1/16) May 3.

From the same barn, $800,000 KEESEP grad Big Mel (Quality

EXAGGERATOR GETS FIRST WINNER AT

GOLDEN GATE Xtrema (Exaggerator) rallied to a convincing first-out score to

give her freshman sire (by Curlin) his first winner while going out

for the same connections that campaigned the 2016 GI

Preakness S. hero. Breaking as the 21-10 second choice in a five-

horse group, the $55,000 KEESEP grad tracked a speed duel from

a distant third through a sharp :21.75 quarter. Appearing one-

paced on the turn, the chestnut came alive entering the final

furlong and blew past the tiring pace actors outside the

sixteenth pole to score by four lengths over longshot Silver Lyric

(Northern Causeway). The victress has a yearling half-sister by

Moretti, a late-blooming $900,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga buy,

showed a new dimension and went wire to wire to take the

11-furlong Flat Out S. Thursday at Belmont.

Graduating second out going nine furlongs at Aqueduct, the

bay was sixth in the GIII Withers S. and failed to find the

winner=s circle in his next four tries before rallying to an

allowance success last out May 2 at Oaklawn. Made the distant

second choice here behind GI Belmont S. hero Sir Winston,

Moretti was hustled away by Javier Castellano and dictated

terms through measured fractions of :24.79, :48.97 and 1:13.61.

Sir Winston started to wind up three furlongs from home, but

Moretti was under chilly handling from Castellano and had more

than enough once set down to stay clear down to the line. Sir

Winston dug in for second in a photo with Expert.

AHe's always been a steady galloper and he seems like he's

come around in his last couple of starts,@ said winning trainer

Todd Pletcher, who added that a start in the GII Suburban S.

July 4 is likely next for Moretti. AHe's really found himself and

seems like he's improving, which is really what we expected all

along. The older he got, the better he would get ... When Javier

and I spoke in the paddock, we talked about how he might be

the speed of the race. I said just to let him run into the first turn

and if he found himself comfortably on the lead, that's great,

and if someone else is ambitious, not to get into a pace duel.

When he got into that rhythm, it looked like he was traveling

really well.@ Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO,

CREED (c, 3, Honor Code--Aspiring {GSP, $132,227}, by Seeking

the Gold) closed to be runner-up debuting Apr. 22 at Tampa and

was made a 14-5 proposition to go one better here. Settling in

sixth behind a four-way speed duel through fast fractions of

:22.72 and :45.65, the $650,000 Keeneland September grad took

charge four deep five-sixteenths from home and drew clear in

the lane to score by 7 3/4 lengths. Cousin Andrew (Into

Mischief) was clear for the place. From the family of the

legendary A.P. Indy (Seattle Slew), the victor has a half-brother

of this term by Accelerate. The win gave jockey Jose Ortiz the

2,000th of his career. Sales History: $650,000 Ylg '18 KEESEP.
