Observational Drawing
Hatching & Cross Hatching
Hatching/Cross Hatching is a shading technique used to
describe shade, tone and form. A wide range of dry media
applications can be employed in colour or greyscale including
pencil, pen & ink, pastel and charcoal. It is also widely used
in printmaking techniques, in particular intaglio etching.
Hatching is the initial single lines applied to describe basic
tones.
Cross Hatching is the addition of lines which cut across the
initial hatched lines to further describe shade, tone and form.
The artist achieves a wide range of effects by increasing and
decreasing pressure upon the implement being used and
through expressive mark making in different directions.
