3M™ Steri-Drape™ Surgical Drapes forObstetric Procedures
Critical Issues in Obstetrics DrapingStrikethroughA surgical drape should be impervious to fluids in order to prevent fluid or blood from thesurgical area soaking through the drape to an unsterile area (for example from splashes or ifthe baby is placed on the mother after delivery). This will reduce the risk of woundcontamination and the associated risk of surgical site infection.
Fluid controlFluid control is critical during Caesarean sections, which can result in large amounts of fluids falling on thefloor. This can be a hazard to surgical staff and presents a risk of slipping and possible injury.
Quick ApplicationDuring C-Sections there is often the need for rapid draping, which can result in drapes lifting at the adhesive ends and an increased risk of contamination.
During Emergency C-sections there is also a need for rapid skin prepping.
What makes 3M Surgical Drapes different?Impervious to strikethrough3M Steri-Drape surgical drapes are made from impervious material, which prevents strikethrough even whenlarge amounts of blood and fluids are present. This will reduce the risk of wound contamination and the associated risk of surgical site infection.
Fluid Control Absorbent materialThe absorbency of 3M surgical drapes helps reduce the risk of exposure to blood and bodyfluids for both the patient and the healthcare worker by absorbing spills and splatters andpreventing r-un-off.
Fluid collectionThe large fluid collection pouch in the 3M C-section drapes provides effective fluid control.
Under buttocks drapes are available with fluid collection pouch to provide effective fluid control duringnormal deliveries.
Drape DesignOne piece drapes are generous in size and are designed for quick application.
loban™ Antimicrobial Incise FilmIodine impregnate incise drape provides broad spectrum antimicrobial activity whichwill not be washed away. It also offers secure adhesion to the wound edge throughoutthe procedure and provides a sterile surface.
Reliable adhesion3M is a leader in adhesive technology, and has applied this expertise to provide surgical drapes withconsistently reliable adhesion to the skin or wound edge. Even during heavy retraction and irrigation, 3M incise drapes adhere securely to wound edges, providing a barrier to bacteria on the skin.

3M™ Ioban™ 2 Antimicrobial Film InciseDrapes for Continuous Skin Protection
Antimicrobial ProtectionContains iodophor which is slowly released on to the skin surface giving continuous andcontrolled antimicrobial activity throughout the surgical procedure.
Transmission RateHave a high moisture vapour transmission rate which allows the skin to“breathe” ensuring improved adhesion throughout the longest procedures.
ConformableAre highly conformable to body contours. The unique low memory stretchallows limb mobilisation or heavy retraction with reduced tension to the skin.
AdhesionSuperb adhesion right up to the wound edge.

Discovery Centre studies, call 01509 613151.
What’s on your patient’s skin when you get readyto operate? The following is a summary of a study generated by the 3M Infection Prevention Discovery Centre.
New evidence presented in this study:
● A percentage of the patient population naturally host largernumbers of skin bacteria than others, these are referred to as ‘high counters’’.
● After surgical site disinfection, these ‘high counters’continue to harbour significant levels of skin organisms.
● The rate of ‘high counters’ in the general population is about one in every three to four people.
● Efficacy of the preps varied with the test subject.
The more we learn about the largest of our human organs, the skin, the more we understand the microbial challenge it presents. The skin is a living organ that provides an effective barrier to theoutside microbial world.
What we found out:
■ Efficacy of the preps varied with test subject
■ It was related in part to initial bacterial density on the skin
■ Although all preps reduced bacterial counts by at least one log, individual responses varied:-70% ETOH reduced more bacteria than PI on one subject while PI worked better than 70% ETOH on another subject
We are not created microbiologically equal – even after prepping, you never know how many bacteria remain on the skin.
As long as we are not able to identify ‘high counters’ we should use incise drapes to create a sterile field around the incision.

Hospital Acquired Infectionand 3M™ Surgical Drapes
3Health Care
● Reduce the risk ofSurgical Site Infection
● Offer consistent quality
3M Infection Prevention
Hospital Acquired Infection and 3M™ Surgical Drapes
Hospital Acquired Infection
Distribution● An estimated 1 in 10 UK hospital patients contract
a hospital acquired infection (HAI)1
● 11% of HAIs are surgical site infections (SISs)2
● Patients with HAI are 7 times more likely to die than those without1
Financial Costs● Hospital Acquired Infections:1
■ cost approximately £3.6 million per year for an average District General Hospital
■ almost treble the per-patient treatment cost
■ extend hospital stays by a factor of 2.5
■ cost the NHS in England approximately £986 million per year
● A 10% reduction in HAIs would release an extra 1,413 bed days per year in a typical hospital1
Preventing SSI● The patient’s own microflora is the greatest source
of organisms causing SSI3, 4
● Reducing the number of bacteria at the wound sitewill help reduce the risk of SSI4
● Draping patients during operations can helpprevent the transfer of bacteria from un-preppedskin to the wound site5
● The material used in the ideal drape should be:
■ a fluid barrier
■ absorbent
■ low linting
■ of low flammability
■ drapeable
■ strong
■ adhesive
● Single-use drapes can:
■ help reduce the risk of surgical siteinfection5
■ offer consistent quality7
3M™ Surgical Drapes
3M supplies single-use surgical drapes including:● flat drapes in a variety of shapes and sizes
● all-in one drapes
● individual drapes and drape packs
● accessories such as tube organisers and fluid collection pouches
3M drapes use the latest developments in non-woven technology and consist of two layers:● upper absorbent layer
● lower impervious layer
3M™ Steri-Drape™ 9000 Drapes● are totally impervious to fluids
● prevent strikethrough
● are highly absorbent
● are low linting
● are slow burning
● are lightweight and drapeable
● have pressure-sensitive adhesive which is secure but can be repositioned
EU Standards● The European standard EN 13795-1 was established to ensure an accepted level
of performance in single-use and re-usable drapes
● It supports essential requirements of the Medical Device Directive regarding the prevention of infection and microbial transfer during surgical procedures
● It includes test methods and performance requirements for:
■ resistance to microbial penetration – dry and wet
■ cleanliness
■ linting6
■ resistance to liquid penetration
■ bursting strength – dry and wet
