News and notes from the collector car world

Land Rover’s new “Reborn” program will take 25 prime examples of the orig-inal 1948 Land Rover Series 1 and re-store them to original factory condition.

The Series 1 4x4 vehicles will be restored at Land Rover’s Solihull factory and then offered for sale. The projects will use original and re-created parts and will take six to nine months to restore per vehicle, according to the company. The 25 vintage 4x4s will be given a factory warranty of 12 months and 12,000 miles. Cost is expected to be $85,000 to $113,000 per vehicle.

The restorations mark the start of Land Rover Classic, a new factory program that will offer OCD levels of factory restoration for old Land Rover vehicles.

The Studebaker National Museum has named Rebecca J. Bonham its 2016 “Champion.” Bonham was scheduled to be honored at the Museum’s 15th An-nual Hall of Champions Dinner Thurs-day, April 21, at the museum. The Hall of Champions Dinner honors “an out-standing individual and/or company that has contributed to the success of the Studebaker Corporation, the Studebaker National Museum, the transportation industry or the auto collector hobby in an extraordinary way,” according to the museum. The award may also honor “a South Bend area pioneering business which exemplifi es the entrepreneurial spirit of the Studebaker family.” Under Bonham’s leadership, the mu-seum secured funding to design and construct its new Chapin Street facility; she also guided the museum to become only the third automotive museum to achieve accreditation from American Alliance of Museums. The Studebaker National Museum will also honor Evie Kirkwood with the Spirit of Studebaker Award. The Spirit of Studebaker recognizes individuals who have given freely of their time, tal-ent, and resources for the Studebaker National Museum, and have played a

key role in maintaining the Studebaker legacy.

RICHMOND, R.I. _ A Rhode Is-land man is facing charges after he and an accomplish allegedly used a fl atbed truck to steal a 1970 AMC AMX. Jose Leal, 50, then sold the car to an unwit-ting buyer.

Leal was processed on one count of larceny over $1,500. According to police reports, Leal and an accomplice loaded the car without permission from the owner, who was a resident of the neighborhood where they were working.

The victim reported the car missing on Feb. 10, according to police records.

Leal eventually sold the car for $3,000. Leal was released on a promise to appear for arraignment in 4th Divi-sion District Court on April 28.

After building six Lightweight E-Types two years ago, Jaguar has planned a new batch of “continuation” models with its XKSS sports car.

In 1957, Jaguar was working on 25 XKSS cars, but nine were wrecked in a fi re at the factory. The remaining 16 XKSS survivors were fi nished and sold,

with one of the buyers being Steve Mc-Queen.

Jaguar now says the remaining nine will now be rebuilt and sold as continua-tion models. Prices will reportedly be in the neighborhood of $1.5 million per car with deliveries beginning in early 2017.

General Motors has been known to produce some spec-tacular one-off vehicles. This unique 1953 Buick Sky-lark Riviera coupe is one fi ne example.

Buick began developing the idea for the special Skylark convertible in 1952. Unlike production Buick converts of the day, the 1952 Skylark show car featured radiused rear wheel openings, lowered door tops that included a “Darrin dip” at the beltline and wire wheels. The Skylark also dropped the trademark Buick portholes, and had especially thin side trim that swept, dipped, and swept again for almost the entire length of the car. For the 1953 model year, coin-cidentally Buick’s 50th anniversary, the special Skylark convertible became a dream-car-come-true and was offered as a limited-production model with all the same special body modi-fi cations. Alongside the 1953 Cadillac Eldo-rado and Oldsmobile Fiesta — other top-line 1953 GM convertibles modifi ed to a racier appearance — the Skylark was part of a triumvirate of GM dream car realities; cars that went from show car stand to showroom.

Only a small group of ’50s GM groupies have heard of the one-of-a-kind 1953 Skylark hardtop, which has been in the hobby since at least 1980 — at least from what I can surmise using documents uncovered in the Old Cars Weekly archive. Those documents were supplied to OCW in 1990 by James Ashworth, who owned the one-of-a-kind Skylark hardtop at that time.

Here’s the low down: A July 21, 1980, letter to Ashworth

from John W. Burnside, Buick Motor Division Manager of Customer Service, verifi ed Buick Engineering indeed had built a 1953 Skylark hardtop with body number 6120 in Flint, Mich., “by converting a 1953 76R (Roadmaster hardtop) by installing the 1953 76X Skylark Convertible doors, quarters and related parts and included the 1954 interior trim design. The car was built to test the concept of possibly marketing a 1953 Skylark Hardtop design.”

The car was further identifi ed in Burnside’s letter to Ash-worth as Style 534737X, and the serial number was given.

Later that year, Oakland Tribune Automotive Edi-tor Bob Johnson wrote in his Oct. 2, 1980, column

that Ashworth had been seeking this unique Sky-lark hardtop for 20 years and fi nally found it in

1980. It “had been gathering dust in a San Jose garage

since 1968,” Johnson wrote. This meshes with another clip from a 1974 publication that Ashworth sent to OCW in which the car

was stated as having vanished after it was ad-

vertised in 1967.Johnson’s article notes that

the San Jose owner had bought the Skylark “for a mere $700 off

the back row of a used car lot in Oklahoma while serving in the Army. A couple of years later, the car was driven to San Jose where it has languished ever since. It is not clear

how the car ever got out of Buick divi-sion’s control as experimental models rarely, if ever, fi nd their way into the hands of the public.”

While Johnson couldn’t ex-plain the early years of the Buick Skylark hardtop (the book “The Buick: A Complete History” states it was originally driven by Buick General Manager Ivan Wiles’s wife), one of his readers was able to fi ll in the car’s earli-est days on the road. M.D. “Doc” Reilly wrote to Johnson with a very interesting tale, printed in its entirety here:

“I really enjoyed your article dated 10-2-80 regarding the 1953 Buick Skylark. I have sent the ar-ticle to Tom Pond — Buick’s Pub-lic Relations Director.

“This really brings back mem-ories. In late 1953, I was a Ser-vice Representative in El Paso, Texas, and had been temporarily assigned to assist with the 1953 Buick new car announcement show in New Orleans. Mr. Wiles (Buick General Manager Ivan Wiles) wanted to show the Skylark Hd. Top to the Buick dealers in New Orleans, but

did not want anyone, especially the me-dia people, to see it before the Buick dealers saw it. We were very secretive about our new models being seen before

announcement day back then.“It was arranged to have this Skylark

shipped by moving van to New Orleans and one of my friends and fellow service

It is clear that this Buick had its fair share of time on the road. The experimen-tal car escaped General Motors by way of Buick General Manager Ivan Wiles, whose wife used it as her daily driver before selling it into public hands.

reps and me were assigned the duty of picking the car up at the port of New Orleans and very secretly driving it to the Jung Hotel at 2:00 a.m. in the morning. No problem — even in New Orleans, the streets are pretty well deserted at 2:00 a.m.

“We ran into two small problems, however. First we got

lost, and then ran out of gas. We were in a bind. Finding a service station open at 2:00 a.m., then fi nding our way to the Jung while maintaining the secrecy Mr. Wiles had

mandated. Our future was on the line. We were in trouble! Fortunately, a New Orleans patrol car came by, we fl agged him down and a true gentleman by the name of Offi cer Clovis Bordelon listened to our story, admired the Skylark, drove to an all night service station, brought us some gasoline, gave us

The restored Skylark, circa-1990

The Buick’s interior was far from road-ready when Ashworth purchased the car. Interestingly, the car’s interior pattern refl ected the 1954 Skylark design.

a police escort to the Jung Hotel only a little bit late and saved our careers. The secret had been kept, and 2 young factory representatives were able to remain in Buick’s employ to this day. Every time I see a picture or anything in writing about the original Skylark, I silently thank Offi cer Clovis Bordelon, a true southern gentleman, and a dedicated public servant.

“Although we didn’t build many of them, it was a super car, just a few years ahead of its time.”

Along with this 1980 letter to the Oakland Tribune colum-nist, M.D. Reilly enclosed a business card stating he was the current Buick Motor Division zone manager operating out of

Fremont, Calif.Sometime after 1990, Ashworth sold the restored blue Sky-

lark hardtop. The last we heard, it was offered for sale by the famous Bob McDorman collection at the 2009 Mecum Auc-tions Kissimmee sale. There, it sold for $92,000. Two years later, in 2011, it crossed the Barrett-Jackson auction block in Scottsdale and sold for $115,000. Both prices are at or below the values of restored 1953 Skylark convertibles, of which 1,690 were built. We haven’t seen the hardtop since.

Perhaps it will show up again in a dusty San Jose garage after a rabid fan hunts it down for another 20 years.

This car was driven and it showed. The usual areas of questionable metal were addressed during the restoration. The Buick was painted three dif-ferent blues by GM early in its life — it wore one of the darker blues when it was found in San Jose.

Page 17: Oc Express 05122016

Just when I thought all of the one-offs and prototype cars had been discovered, another popped up in the July 2015 The Self-Starter, publication of the Cadillac & LaSalle

Club.Tucked in the classifi ed section of The Self-Starter was a

small photo and ad for a very special 1955 Cadillac. Most people probably glanced over the ad without realizing how special the pictured car is. Had I not been so enthralled with 1955 Cadillacs in general, and 1956 Eldorado Sevilles in par-ticular, I would have probably looked past it myself.

What made the 1955 Cadillac in the ad so special is that it’s an Eldorado two-door hardtop, which was not offered by the factory until 1956. What I was looking at was the 1955 Cadillac-based Seville prototype that I had been searching for since 2002.

That year, I was at GM Media Ar-chives sifting through General Motors’ fi les while researching Cadillac history for the book “Cadillac: 100 Years of In-novation.” In digging through GM’s fi les, I stumbled upon a studio shot of a mid-1950s Cadillac Eldorado two-door hard-top. After closely examining the photo, I realized it had the 1955 Eldorado rear bumper and the six 1955-only hash marks between the bumper and bottom edge of the deck lid. This car was not a production 1956 Eldorado Seville two-door hardtop, but rather a 1955 Eldorado that was surely the prototype for the Se-ville that would not be offered until the 1956 model year.

Before discovering that image in 2002, I was disappointed Cadillac had not built the Seville one year earlier. While the Eldorado tailfi ns are identical from 1955 to 1956, the different design of the 1955 Cadillac front end has always appealed to me more than the 1956 front.

Upon discovering that photo, I realized I wouldn’t have to someday build a 1955 Seville of my own by swapping a ’55 front clip onto a 1956 Seville — there was already one out there, at least in 1955. The question then became: Did it still exist?

With the question answered by the July 2015 classifi ed ad, I contacted the seller. He explained that the current owner had bought the 1955 Seville in 1971 and stored it around 1980. The engine blew in the 1970s and upon disassembly, it was determined that the car’s original, standard Eldorado dual-four-barrel 1955 engine had been built to the 1956 Cadillac displacement of 365 cubic inches. The car also had the revised 1956 Cadillac Hydra-Matic transmission, which required a unique shift indicator lens and decal since the 1955 transmis-sion did not include park.

Page 18: Oc Express 05122016

The seller also stated that the origi-nal interior was upholstered in unique black-and-white material from neither 1955 nor 1956, but it was fashioned on the seats and panels to the design of 1956. The interior images he sent also showed the car had the chromed interior appointments also found on a produc-tion 1955 Eldorado convertible.

Unique cars such as this were given dated Shop Order numbers by General Motors design; these SO numbers were generally stamped on a tag that was in-stalled on the cowl of each prototype or factory-modifi ed car. The seller in-cluded pictures of this 1955 Cadillac’s tag, which identifi ed it as SO 2542 with a build date of June 6, 1955. This rela-tively late production date partially ex-plained how it was possible for the car to have 1956 mechanical and interior features. The complete explanation was answered by the identity of the car’s original owner.

In 1955, C.F. Arnold was the chief engineer of the Cadillac Motor Car Di-vision of GM. He had joined the divi-sion in 1925 as an engineering depart-ment laboratory assistant and worked his way up to chief engineer by 1950. In cross-referencing a list of SO numbers supplied by fellow CLC member Jim Jordan, SO 2542 matched up to a 1955 Cadillac Eldorado and a “Mr. Arnold” — certainly the same Mr. Arnold who was chief engineer of Cadillac, and who would have been this car’s fi rst owner as SO cars were built for show displays and/or high-ranking GM employees. (For example, Harley Earl’s LeSabre, the 1955 Chevrolet Biscayne, and each 1953 Buick Wildcat concept had unique SO numbers.)

Along with an image of the SO tag,

the seller sent a picture of the adjacent cowl tag, which answered how this unique 1955 Eldorado coupe’s body was built. Rather than fi tting a fi xed steel roof to a convertible 1955 Eldorado, GM pulled a Coupe deVille two-door hardtop from the line and then installed the Eldorado rear fenders and rear bum-per. This is how Cadillac built produc-tion Eldorado convertibles from Series 62 convertibles, although the production Eldorado convertibles were differentiat-ed from the Series 62 convertibles with a different model number on the cowl tag.

In comparing the seller’s recent im-ages of his silver car to the light-me-tallic-colored car in the factory photos, almost everything seemed to match. The only difference was saddle trim on the belt line of the current car — the car in the factory photos lacked any beltline trim, even the standard 1955 Eldorado convertible beltline saddle trim, and recent photos of the car show a 1956 Cadillac-type beltline trim slightly dif-ferent from the trim used in 1956 pro-duction.

Another minor inconsistency exists between the March 7, 1955, date on the factory photos and the June 6, 1955, date on the SO tag. Jordan’s list of SO numbers sometimes shows multiple en-

tries for a single car, which can mean a car went back to GM design for some changes. Although only one entry on the SO list exists for this car, it’s possible the June date refl ects a return of the car to GM styling for updates, during which time perhaps this trim was added.

When all the numbers and details are added up, it appears the Cadillac in the July 2015 The Self-Starter classifi ed ad is the car I have searched for on the internet, in classifi ed ads, in person and through other people, such as Jim Jor-dan, who searched for the car himself.

As much fun as the search and dis-covery of my dream car has been, and the fact that I take it as a sign that the car was photographed on my birthday, it’s not meant to be mine, at least not yet. I’m too sentimental toward my current fl eet of ’55 Cadillacs to part with any one of them to seal the deal.

The seller was listening to offers over the $25,000 mark, and it’s not a show-ready car. The original interior is not mint and some rust repair is neces-sary. It would be a shame to change the original interior since its upholstery is unique, but the rust would have to be addressed. Since the “mintest” 1956 Sevilles — if you can fi nd them — are generally worth $50,000-$75,000 on their best days, this very-similarly styled 1955 Eldorado two-door hardtop prob-ably wouldn’t be worth much more to anyone but the most die-hard 1955 Ca-dillac two-door hardtop fan, such as my-self. I hope that’s just the type of person who lands this very special car. For me, it will have to be another time.

*Special thanks to David W. Temple for providing the GM biography of C.F. Arnold in conjunction with this car’s discovery.

Here is a studio shot of the mid-1950s Cadillac Eldorado two-door hardtop.

EXTERIOR Restoration

Spraying some cool new stripes on a 1967 Camaro was certainly a snap for owner Andy McMyler of AJ’s Auto Body. Getting all the measurements, correct tape

lines and masking all done without a true template to work off of was another story.

In short: painting stripes is relatively easy. Getting them laid out perfectly can be a bit tricky, even for an experienced painter such as McMyler.

“The devil’s in the details. With any kind of bodywork or paint work, it’s 90 percent prep and 10 percent product,” McMyler says. “It’s going to be 8 hours of layout for 10 minutes of spraying.”

Before paint, the Camaro received almost all new metal — quarter panels, fenders, even roof. Unfortunately, another shop botched the job and the owner wound up bringing the

car to McMyler, who had to cut the body apart and basically start over.

“We had to cut apart the quarter panels and get them brought in back to where they should be. Unfortunately he’s got a lot of money into this thing right now and we’re trying to get it done without killing him on it,” McMyler added. “This is pretty basic, it’s just laying down straight lines and making sure everything is straight and perfect. I’ve got the original GM specs showing where the stripes go. The back is a little trickier and the cowl vent is a little trickier because you’ve got wrap it around the vents. But when you are shooting down the hood, it’s just straight lines.”

Once the car was ready for stripes, it took about two days to complete the masking and paint work to install them. ■

Striping it rich!Lots of tape, time and patience combine to turn outperfect Rally stripes on a 1967 Camaro

Page 20: Oc Express 05122016

20 Old Cars Weekly News & Marketplace EXPRESS / May 12, 2016 www.oldcarsweekly.com

The stark white Camaro will receive two wide Rally stripes on the hood and deck lid. Each wide stripe is accented by a narrow quarter-inch stripe on either side. The taping begins with straight lines down the hood using quarter-inch 3M masking tape. Conveniently, the black accent stripes are a quarter-inch wide, meaning the tape can be used to get the correct thickness.

There are no templates for the Rallye stripes, but McMyler has some sketches taken from the Internet with measurements off an unrestored survivor car. “The stripes on the hood do not line up exactly with the stripes on the deck lid,” McMyler points out. “They are spaced a little wider apart. Nobody ever notices that.” The stripes also don’t go all the way to the back glass.

“I’ll measure as I go and put little pencil lines to make sure I’m where I’m supposed to be, but it’s just pulling a straight line and laying it down straight,” McMyler notes. “And that’s just 33 years of experience.” To get the narrow accent stripe, three strips of tape will be laid down, with the middle strip then being pulled to allow the quarter-inch width needed for the narrow black line.

A spacer masking strip is laid down beneath the edge of the hood opening. The hood stripes will wrap downward and end in the engine compartment (bottom) side of the hood.

There is lots of trial and error involved when taping stripes. It’s not easy to “eyeball” lines when there are body contours involved. Trust your measurements more than your eyes and get the tape as straight as you can between your marks.

Page 21: Oc Express 05122016

www.oldcarsweekly.com May 12, 2016 / Old Cars Weekly News & Marketplace EXPRESS 21

McMyler came up with his own template circles to help him radius the Camaro Rallye stripes. He saves the cardboard cutouts and re-uses them when the need arises.

A thicker half-inch tape strip is put down behind the rear window to show McMyler where the rear black stripes will end and “turn back.”

The quarter-inch tape works nicely for turning corners. Eighth-inch tape works even better. In this case, McMyler sticks with the quarter-inch for everything because his narrow black stripes will be a quarter-inch.

This “middle” strip of tape will be the narrow black stripe. “A tech tip: When you are using tape as a spacer like this, do not pull on it because the tape will stretch. And as it stretches, it thins out. You’ll be way off,” McMyler cautions.

Plastic can go over the body for fi nal masking, but not over the trunk and hood — they need to be opened and closed during spraying. Wider masking tape is used to shield the areas on the hood and deck lid that need to remain white.

Page 22: Oc Express 05122016

22 Old Cars Weekly News & Marketplace EXPRESS / May 12, 2016 www.oldcarsweekly.com

“The tape is what will be white. The white is what will be black,” McMyler says. “You’re brain has to kind of work in reverse.”

Measurements for the stripes on the spoiler and cowl are taken with the pieces mounted on the car, but taping and painting are done with both pieces off off the car. Masking the narrow stripes that go around the cowl vents is among the trickiest parts of this job.

McMyler gives all the areas headed for paint a fi nal solvent wash to get rid of any pencil marks and make sure there is nothing left that could contaminate the paint.

Before he gets ready to shoot paint, McMyler takes a few minutes to run a fi rm fi nger over every tape line. Any spots that are not stuck down hard will allow black paint to sneak underneath.

Page 23: Oc Express 05122016

www.oldcarsweekly.com May 12, 2016 / Old Cars Weekly News & Marketplace EXPRESS 23

“We’ll go over it with a tack rag just before we paint it, just to get any little pieces of dust or dirt,” McMyler says. “just a simple smart tack rag... Always open up your tack rag and give yourself a nice big area to work with.”

The black polyester paint is mixed 50-50 with reducer. McMyler uses a basic 3M gravity-feed gun and applies a light starter coat. It will be followed by two more coats of black base, followed by three coats of clear. “It’s a solvent-based base coat. I don’t use water base. I don’t think the technology is there yet. It’s just my personal opinion,” he says. “Until it’s mandated I will not switch. The gun has the fi lter built right into it. I’m a big believer in 3M. They invented the process and everybody else pretty much copied it.”

“Polyester base coats are stupid simple. All you’re doing is transferring color to the car. It’s not like you are going for a shine. All you are going for is coverage, so you can hang back, let the gun do the work and as long as you have a good pattern and you’re overlapping your pattern nicely you’ll get a good result.”

Page 24: Oc Express 05122016

24 Old Cars Weekly News & Marketplace EXPRESS / May 12, 2016 www.oldcarsweekly.com

A different gun with a slightly heavier pattern is used for the clear, which is a thicker solution than basecoat paint. McMyler will lay down three coats of clear. “The base coat is very simple to spray. You can lay it down in any direction you want to with the non-metallics. The clear is going to take a little bit more technique and you’ve got to be a little more fundamentally correct. You need it to go on evenly because if you pile it up in one area, it’s going to slide.”

The black paint needs only 15 or 20 minutes to become totally dry. “Unmasking” can then begin.

Here’s why using quarter-inch tape made sense. The narrow accent stripes are clean and uniform all the way around.

The entire car was clearcoated when it was painted white. The hood and trunk areas will be cleared again now that the stripes are in place.

The freshly painted areas get another wipedown before getting cleared to make sure there are no smudges, dirt or other debris that might have shown up after unmasking.

Springing to life

There are countless styles and variations when it comes to seat construction in old cars, but they often follow a similar formula: more complicated construc-tion for the seat cushion area (where you sit), often involving heavier gauge

springs; and a simpler setup for the seat backs, frequently using simple vertical zigzag springs of a thinner gauge.

Rebuilding or refurbishing the “sitting” area of the seats can be a quirky and challenging task involving a few special tools, hog rings and other fun stuff.

Putting new springs in a seat back is probably a lot easier than a lot of folks real-ize, however. Once the seats have been disassembled and the bare metal frames are ready to go, it generally only involves pulling out the old vertically arranged zigzag springs, cutting some new springs to fi t, then hooking them in.

“If it’s to the point where your foam is completely deteriorated, or the metal is 50, 60, 70 years old and the metal is getting fatigued — it’s only meant to spring so many times — and then you add in maybe a mouse nest in there … there are a lot times you would benefi t from changing the springs,” said Chris Arendt, of Fast Fred-die’s Rod Shop in Eau Claire, Wis. “It helps if you have the right tools, and you’re looking at probably 200 bucks to buy the right tools. But you wouldn’t have to have them. It just makes it go faster.”

Following is how Arendt replaced the seat back springs in a 1969 Dodge Dart. ■

Simple spring replacement can make seat backs fi rm and comfy again

New zigzag springs are sold in rolls of 100-plus feet (middle). These two rolls are made of 8- and 12-gauge steel. The old springs can be removed by bending a tab on one end of the seat frame and by simply stretching the spring enough to unclip it.

A spring stretcher is helpful, but not essential. It makes removing the decaying original springs a snap. The seat backs of the Dart have four simple zigzag lengths that will be removed and replaced.

The new 12-gauge spring is tough to cut with a hand tool. Arendt went for a cut-off wheel to cut the new springs from the roll.

Page 27: Oc Express 05122016

A spring end former tool puts a small bend in the end of the spring to keep it from sliding out of its retaining clip. Again, it’s not crucial to have the tool. A couple pairs of vice-grips can also do the job.

Page 28: Oc Express 05122016

The retaining fl anges that were pried open to get the old springs out need to be gently hammered closed again with the new springs in place.

Four new springs in place in the seat backs of the Dart: It’s a simple job that a do-it-yourselfer can pull off without much trouble.

Knowledge gained through experience benefi ts restorers, but it’s also helpful to possess

extrasensory perception. I do not. When customer-friend Don Kent’s 1968 Dodge Charger came to us for a certain amount of repair to its passenger side, I had no idea that the job would snowball into a complete cosmetic restoration. When our original goal was met, “let’s keep going,” said Don. Since that time, the Charger has been partially disassembled, then farther disassembled, and even farther dis-assembled as its body panels were stripped to bare metal, exposing Pitching the pole and patching the hole

Page 30: Oc Express 05122016

30 Old Cars Weekly News & Marketplace EXPRESS / May 12, 2016 www.oldcarsweekly.com

more and more work to be done. Hindsight being 20/20, this should have been a rotisserie job from the onset. With-out ESP, how was I to know?

Years later, Don’s Charger is fi nally close to color, in what we like to call “fi nal prime.” As we’ve seen in previ-ous tech articles in Old Cars Guide to Auto Restoration, getting to this stage was a long, tedious haul. This would now be a particularly inconvenient time for additional body modifi cations. Don understands, but even so, the antenna hole atop the passenger-side fender is buggin’ him more and more each day. This car’s aftermarket power antenna is in the factory location, but looks like a big, old pole that’s an unsightly interruption to the fl owing lines of this otherwise

sleek automobile. At this stage, we’re intently focused on the smaller details. Suddenly, the pole and its hole are truly obtrusive — and they’ve both got to go.

If steppin’ backward weren’t enough, our deadline is looming. This project must be painted, cut and buffed before summer heat again makes working with a strap-on respira-tor unbearable. The antenna hole patchwork should go quick and easy. It’ll also allow an opportunity to use supplies from stock, such as top-shelf abrasives from 3M and Evercoat-brand fi ller products. If and when such staples are in short supply, they’re always available through the Eastwood Com-pany. On that note, let’s begin again, by making dust fl y. ■

We’re not excited about backin’ up when we’re this far along, but here we go. The antenna hole portion of the fender happens to be double-panel. Hammer-and-dolly effectiveness will be compromised as underside dolly access is blocked.

An angle die grinder outfi tted with a fresh 3-inch, 3M Scotch-Brite Roloc disc enables us to remove perfectly good primer and fi ller without removing precious metal below.

Page 31: Oc Express 05122016

Chucked up in the old pneumatic drill, this 3M Scotch-Brite Clean ’n’ Strip disc is the type that begins service at a 4-inch outside diameter. This one’s pretty worn, but in our situation, it’s useful for clearing primer from the crannied edges of the hole.

Some call them “plugs.” Others call ’em “slugs.” We prefer to call ’em “timesavers.” This set was purchased years ago from Ron Covell. Now if things go our way, we’ll still have the size we’re in need of today.

Page 32: Oc Express 05122016

In this double-panel section, hammer-and-dolly corrections could be tough. For this reason, “Mrs. Rotten” welds such patches solid in increments, stitch-by-stitch, while cooling with clean compressed air as she goes.

Although magnets are handy for positioning such patches, they can cause diffi culty when welding with electricity as they’re known to disrupt the arc. Here, I’ve asked “Mrs. Rotten” to give me three tack welds. Soon the magnets will be removed.

Proper positioning in this double-panel hole takes a little time. Out of sight on the underside is a large, round speaker magnet. Three fender washers temporarily fi ll the void to support the patch in position.

A fresh enough 3M 36-grit Roloc disc works well for grinding down the highs. Always protective of primer, caution is taken to direct sparks away from our work.

Once again, “Mrs. Rotten” has kept distortion to a minimum, but even so, some hammer-’n’-dolly work is required for this new wavelet.

At this stage, we’re happy enough with our patchwork. Before fi ller work begins, 3M Stikit 80-grit on a 6-inch dual-action (DA) sander helps to feather away existing primer’s heavier sand scratches. From here, we’ll continue to sand out a little farther with 120 grit on a proper hand pad.

For just about any patchwork or repair where welding is involved, we like to begin our fi ller work with a fi ber-reinforced fi ller such as Everglass, which is available through Eastwood. Later, after primer, we’ll take steps to moisture-proof our work on the underside as well.

With a form-fi tting block, sanding begins with 40 grit, then we switch to 80. Compared to more conventional polyester fi llers, the fi ber-reinforced variety is rugged sanding. This time we’re happy to be working such a small spot.

From here, the steps are standard. We’ve covered fi ller work in detail recently, so let’s skip the Rage Extreme mid-coat “demo” and move along to Metal Glaze blending putty. This polyester product is ideal for small-area skim coating. It’s thin enough to fl ow, and once cured, it sands easily with no resin goo layer to clog the fi ner grits.

Because this is actually a shapely area, proper block selection is paramount. These Motor Guard and Dura-Block tools are Eastwood staples. The Tundra-brand “Noodles” pool toy (far right) is from our local grocer’s seasonal items section. At this stage, our Metal Glaze is fared and feathered into existing primer.

Prior to spot-priming, we’ll hang and adjust the door to be sure the panels still transition as before. The last time these yet-to-be restored hinges were adjusted, I drilled four 1/8-inch holes in discrete locations (through the hinges and into the cowl). Now, using bits as guide-pins, this trick cuts adjustment time — and it will again during fi nal assembly.

Right: Ordinarily we like to see things go where they’re needed, but this aftermarket power antenna is a goner. It’s taken a beating for

years while running without the protection of the fender’s missing splash shield. Besides,

I really want to hear the sound this will make when it meets the bottom of the ’can.

A classic 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air two-door hardtop had its face rearranged. The car sports optional spin-ner wheel covers and accessory fender skirts, sun visor and dual side mirrors.

A few years back, Old Cars Weekly was fortunate enough to inherit a fantastic collection of car wreck photos taken by longtime investigator and photographer Rodman Bingham of Menlo Park, Calif. According to his daughter, Patrice Bingham Offenhauser, Rodman had “a police scanner speaker in every room of the house and his car — big sweep-ing antenna on the back. He even had a special headset speaker under his pillow... It wasn’t so much being an ‘ambulance chaser’ as much as priding himself on having the fi rst, and the best, photos of a crime or accident scene which could then be used in the newspaper or in court proceedings.” Following are a few of his memorable mangled iron shots, as well as several Pennsylvania-based accident photos uncovered by Rusty Herlocher.

A rough ride through a fi eld took its toll on this 1957 Ford Country Sedan station wagon.

An upended 1957 Nash Ambassador Custom four-door sedan forgot that the rubber is supposed to meet the road. This Ambassador was equipped with a 327-cid V-8 engine and quad headlamps. 1957 was the last year for the big Ambassador.

A 1957 Pontiac Chieftain two-door sedan. The young driver claimed to have lost control of his car trying to reach home before curfew. The Chieftain engine was stroked to 347 cid at 252 hp with a Hydra-Matic transmission. Note the quintessential 1950s chenille balls hanging from the inside windshield.

This 1957 Chevrolet Two-Ten Townsman station wagon with a 283-cid V-8 (as designated by the “V” on the hood) is the last of a four-car chain reaction. The accident occurred when the driver of the fi rst car stopped on the highway to avoid collision with an illegally passing car. The children seen in the station wagon escaped injury.

Page 41: Oc Express 05122016

A 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air four-door sedan, equipped with a 283-cid V-8 engine, tried to enter the house through the front door.

A 1957 Ford Skyliner retractable hardtop took a hard whack from a 1959 Chevrolet Biscayne. The report stated that fog and rain contributed to poor visibility and slick roads, with “no party at fault.” That may very well be a fact, but it is little compensation for the ravaged vehicles.

This 1950 Ford Custom two-door coupe and a 1950 Chevrolet Styleline Deluxe coupe formed a most perfect union. The young man stopped to inspect the wreckage while trying to look “cool” and stay warm. Note the accessory sun visor and spotlight on the Ford.

1951 Chrysler Saratoga four-door sedan is towed from a three-way train crossing where it was struck by a Pennsylvania Railroad passenger train. The driver was thrown from the car upon impact and suffered only slight abrasions. The Chrysler was not as fortunate. Note the tire chains on the rear tire added for traction on winter roads.

Page 43: Oc Express 05122016

A 1950 Chevrolet Styleline Deluxe takes an offbeat parking spot. A few bricks were crushed, the windows were smashed, several toys were broken, a parking meter post was snapped off and the Chevy received moderate damage.

The Chevrolet’s driver told police she was trying to pull into a parking space when the brakes failed and the car jumped the curb. Notice the Dinky Toys, Daisy air guns, Whimsies dolls, and other popular toys of the time were scattered about the storefront following the accident.

This 1958 Mercury Monterey Phaeton was unable to stop for the sign due to slick, snow-covered roads. The light pole provided an abrupt alternative. After connecting with the left front fender, the car rico-cheted and tapped the right. The ’58 was the fi rst Mercury offered with multi-drive transmission.

This 1958 Cadillac Coupe deVille suffered a hard hit to the rear, but maintains her dignity as she’s towed from the scene. Cadillac made the 1958 models available with an air suspension ride, for the added cost of $215, but the system had a tendency to leak.

Page 45: Oc Express 05122016

A 1958 Chevrolet Bel Air four-door sedan and a 1954 Plymouth Belvedere two-door hardtop collide less than three hours after a new traffi c signal went into operation. The Chevy was unable to avoid broadsiding the Plymouth, causing it to slam into a corner meat market.

A 1958 Plymouth Plaza “Silver Special” was found crashed and abandoned near a municipal airport. Tire marks indicate the car failed to negotiate a curve in the road and struck the tree before it stopped.

This 1958 Buick Riviera sedan took a nose dive as the driver exited his car and shut the door. The fl oor of the garage collapsed, dropping the car into the basement. Surprisingly, when the vehicle was pulled from the abyss, it had suffered only minor damage.

This 1958 Cadillac Series 62 coupe was towed to the yard after a collision that sent four people to the hospital. The Caddie had passed a truck on wet pavement when it went into a skid, swerved into the path of an oncoming vehicle with which it collided and proceeded over an embankment and into a fi eld. Note the Ford tow truck to the right.

A 1965 Buick LeSabre four-door hardtop branded a pony in the rear hindquarter. The 1966 Ford Mustang hardtop coupe is defi nitely headed to the body shop.

This is no way to start a vacation! The driver of this 1959 Chevy Parkwood station wagon was en route to a fi shing trip. He blamed a bee fl ying up his shirtsleeve as being responsible for this mishap. The sudden lurching and braking obviously caused the travel trailer to fl ip onto its side, lifting the wagon off the road.
