Issue 116 December 2016
As a part of International Education Week, the Office of International Education held our annual Glob-
al Night on November 18th, 2016, in collaboration with the Multicultural & Student Program and Team Global
Night. The show started with a wonderful speech from Dr. Jennifer Glasier, Dean of Enrollment Services.
This year’s event had the largest attendance ever, with so much support from our fellow international students,
their host families, OC students, faculty, and staff from different departments. The audience was in a very
ebullient mood due to the fantastic show. The event gave the students to showcase their unique and amazing
talents including their countries’ traditional cultures, music, dance, and spirits. One of students assistants in
our office, Deep from India, performed Indian dance with Alec from the U.S. and Dieph from Haiti, in tradi-
tional Indian clothing. Also, there was a spectacular traditional fashion show. OC students from various cul-
tural backgrounds walked on the stage in their beautiful traditional cultural clothing. The show was incredible,
and everyone had an amazing time! We appreciated everyone who made this event possible. —Yifei

The Yuba City Sikh Festival is one of the biggest and most spectacular Sikhism annual events in all of
Northern California drawing large number of devotees and spectators. The three day Guru Gaddi Diwas festiv-
ities celebrate the anniversary of Guru Granth Sahib, Sikhism's holy scripture. Nearly 180,000 people from all
over the globe partici-pated in the 37th annual Sikh parade here to mark the 308th Coronation Day of the Guru
Granth Sahib on Nov.6. . The five mile parade started from the Gurdwara Sikh Temple Tierra Buena at 10 am.
The main float carrying the Guru Granth Sahib was beautifully ornamented and designed with exceptional de-
tail. It was escorted by the Panj Pyaras or the five beloved ones, who were carrying the Khalsa flag. Nearly
200 food stalls lined the parade route and 50 different types of food including pakoras, tikki, corn, kari-chawal,
makk-di- roti and saag were distributed. A booth offered fresh orange juice to the attending guests. The crowd
favorite was fresh sugar cane juice with thousands lining up for it. The food which is basically called as langar
which is provided freely to every indi-vidual whoever attends this event. —Deep

I am always reminded of how truly blessed I am to be a student in Olympic College. The USS Turner Joy Tour was one of the many events that we had the opportunity to participate. The USS Turner Joy is a 58 year old ship located on the Bremerton Boardwalk, very close to the Bremerton Ferry Terminal. The ship has been existing since the 1958 which has served for the US Navy, including the Vietnam war. The ship was a historical maze where I was able to explore and see what life was like on a Navy ship. I believe the most impressive and surpris-ing part was the little facility such as post office, barber shop, fortune telling, laundry shop and convenience store inside, possibly to encourage the life on the ship more comfortable for the crew. The tour was definitely an educational and adventurous tour, I recommend everyone to plan a visit someday! —Chiko
