OCR-VC implementation targets

• The OCR-VC will provide long time series of calibrated ocean color radiance (OCR), enable networking to avoid duplication of efforts, and ensure OCR data readily available and beneficial for everyone

• OCR-VC activities will include Cal/Val, satellite & in-situ data merging, product generation, as well as development and demonstrations of new and improved applications

• Cooperation with related groups: ESA’s GlobColour, POGO-GEO-GOOS’s ChloroGIN, CSA/GEO SAFARI, CEOS/WGCV, and other constellations...

• Implementation plan has been delivered to SIT on 10 August 2009: there are Five objectives (OCR continuity, Data quality, Data Harmonization, User interface, and Capacity building)

• Continue interaction between NASA and ESA related to MERIS calibration and characterization and extend to Sentinel-3 (Bontempi, NASA and Regner, ESA).

• Support the Chlorophyll Global Integrated Network (ChloroGIN) project - (Dowell and Hoepffner, JRC).

• Improvement of coastal/regional algorithms– NASA Semi-Analytical Algorithm (GIOP) initiative– ESA CoastColour initiative– GEO Water Quality Task for Coastal and Inland waters

(“the GEO Inland and Coastal Water Quality Algorithm workshop” in Washington DC on 19-21 May, 2009)

• High quality datasets from multi-sensors enable us to investigate long-term change of marine biosphere and chemosphere

• They can play the essential role for development & improvement of climate and ecological models

• We need to ensure continuity, consistency and accuracy of OCRs to provide enough temporal-spatial resolution and long time series

2009 Progress of OCR-VC 3) Data Harmonization, supporting ECVs

• Collaboration for a multiple sensor comparison involving MERIS, SeaWiFS, MODIS-Aqua, and OCM-2 (Bontempi, NASA; Navulgund, ISRO; Regner, ESA).

• ESA’s GlobColour project demonstrated the benefits of multiple sensor data merger working towards an ocean color Essential Climate Variable (ECV) for global products. ESA is planning CoastColour for several coastal study areas using MERIS 300-m data. (Regner, ESA)

• IOCCG Working Groups (WG) for bio-optical sensors on Geostationary platforms (WG Chairs plus Ahn, KORDI, Navalgund, ISRO).

• IOCCG WG for evaluating possibilities for bio-optical Sensors on ARGO floats (WG Chair: Claustre, Laboratoire d’Oceanographie de Villefranche).

• IOCCG Report 9 “Using Ocean Colour to Elucidate the Functional Structure of Marine Ecosystems” (to be published end of 2009; EC-09-01a_4)

• GCOS inter-panel workshop on Net Primary Production (JRC/IES, June 2009)

GCOS inter-panel workshop on Net Primary Production (EC/JRC, June 2009)

• The JRC organizes and hosts interdisciplinary, inter-panel workshops of topic of interest to the GCOS community.

• The main objective of the 2009 workshop was to review how the primary productivity of the total (land and oceans) biosphere are estimated, and to establish what measurements are needed to track the evolution of the global biosphere and its interaction with the climate system.

• The aim of the workshop was to recommend changes or additions to the Global Climate Observing System's (GCOS) Implementation Plan (IP).

• The recommendation resulting from this workshop will be published as a GCOS report in the first half of 2010.

2009 Progress of OCR-VC4) Facilitate timely and easy access to data

(user interface)• IOCCG Report 8 (2009) “Remote Sensing in Fisheries and

Aquaculture” has been published with contribution of SAFARI – Societal Applications in the Fisheries and Aquaculture using

Remotely-Sensed Imagery (SAFARI) project aims to accelerate the assimilation of Earth observation data into fisheries research and ecosystem-based fisheries management on a world scale (AG-06-02, Crevier, CSA and Platt, IOCCG)

– The SAFARI Initiative is organizing an International Symposium on Remote Sensing and Fisheries from 15-17 February 2010 in Kochi, India.

• CSA has invested reception and processing of full resolution (300-m) MERIS data (Crevier, CSA).

• Development of EO tools for Ecosystem-based Marine Management (AG-06-02) (Briand, CSA)

• Paper on CWP-4B-10 “The Ocean Colour Radiance Virtual Constellation” was presented at OceanObs'09 conference is in Venice, September, 2009– http://www.oceanobs09.net/

• An advanced training course of “Inversion procedures in Ocean-Colour Remote Sensing” (10-14 August 2009)– The training course/workshop was organized by Dr. Roland

Doerffer (GKSS Research Centre), in conjunction with the IOCCG in Lauenberg, Germany, as attended by 27 participants from 18 countries.

– The objectives are to provide participants with an overview of inversion methods and bio-optical models.

Leadership of the OCR-VC• IOCCG membership includes representatives from space and other

government agencies as well as representatives from scientific and operational user communities.

• The leadership group for the OCR-VC will come from implementing organizations; specifically those individuals from space and other government agencies serving on IOCCG.

• Participants of the OCR-VC: Yu-Hwan Ahn, (KORDI), Paula Bontempi (NASA), Paul M. DiGiacomo, (NOAA), Mark Dowell (JRC), Milton Kampel (INPE), Hiroshi Murakami (JAXA), Rangnath R. Navalgund (ISRO), Peter Regner (ESA-ESRIN), Eric Thouvenot (CNES), Yves Crevier (CSA) and Hans Bonekamp (EUMETSAT), and others are likely. IOCCG Chair and Exec. Scientist are ad hoc.

• Three co-chairs, EC/JRC’s Mark Dowell, NASA’s Paula Bontempi, and JAXA’s Hiroshi Murakami lead the OCR-VC supported by the IOCCG Chair (currently James Yoder) and IOCCG Executive Scientist (Venetia Stuart) .
