some brief feedback before 4/10
Slide 4
Intro to online presence Exercise 1: Google yourself Discuss in
pairs: Balance of professional vs. personal content?
(cybersecurity) Surprises? If you were an employer, what would your
impression be? Make note of your results before you create new
online profiles how (and when) do things change after?
Slide 5
My Google results (4/1) and today . Last weeks changes not
showing up yet Cybersecurity fail

http://www.linkedin.com/in/jenbarrett Pros vs cons? Similar to your
personal style? (Kawika) (Ben) (Jessica)
Slide 7
Why is online presence important? Create professional image
Broadcast your info (job searching, networking) Platform for
disseminating your papers (if not in open access journals) UH
requires pubs to be added to library repository, Scholar Space
Submit ms exactly as published, but NOT the publishers pdf Add link
to Scholar Space location on your website Other options:
academia.edu ResearchGate
Slide 8
Factors to consider when choosing a profile platform Ease of
use vs. annoyance factor Security and privacy Aesthetics Visibility
(link to other sites) Ease of maintenance Others? Each platform
allows for a range of time investment though some are faster to set
up than others.
Slide 9
Introductions to different platforms 1. LinkedIn (Michele) 2.
Google Sites (Michele) 3. hawaii.edu, weebly (Matt) 4.
iWeb/Bluehost, personal blog (Christine) Our personal experiences
& opinions on a few options: everyones best fit will be
different
Slide 10
LinkedIn How many of you created a LinkedIn profile prior to
this course?
Slide 11
Step 1: upload a photo & choose who can see it
LinkedIn
Slide 12
You can rearrange order of sections (as you might do for your
CV) Warning! LinkedIn keeps prompting you for things you might not
want to share (although you can adjust privacy settings) Building
your profile
Slide 13
You can delete your activity I did.
Slide 14
I clicked on some of tabs at top of page (groups, jobs, etc)
and somehow my profile strength became advanced
Slide 15
Slide 16
Note: If you disable your public profile, it may take several
weeks for it to be removed from search engine results.
Slide 17
These are default listings (I didnt choose ANY of them). ?
Slide 18
LinkedIn: my personal verdict Cons: Potential security/privacy
leaks (black box) Constant stream of ads = info overload Very bored
by creating profile Not sure I need this Pros: Growing faster than
Facebook (= resistance is futile) Probably most helpful for: People
in large field with lots of competition for jobs People new to
their fields

Summary of Get Googly for Google Sites! tutorial:
http://www.cte.hawaii.edu/Googly/Googly1.html By Suzy Mehlhorn at
CTE ([email protected]) first 15-20 min = good preview; whole
thing = very helpful Google Sites
Slide 20
Step 1: Create a conceptual site map MindMeister (free trial
for edu emails) or MindNode (for iPad or Macs)
Slide 21
Its super easy to start a site through gmail you can delete
later!! Top right: Pencil = edit page New page (page with plus
inside) = create chapters Example: Announcements template ~ blog
More = very important!! Examples: Preview page as viewer Manage
site Settings and permissions Move page change scaffold Top left:
Insert = youtube videos, calendars, even HTML code Within frame:
gear symbol = can change size of image, etc. Step 2: Browse through
toolbars
Slide 22
Lets look at a few examples: mguannel2 (from CTE tutorial)
behind the scenes my C-MORE template C-MORE PDTP website Step 2:
Browse through toolbars
Slide 23
Step 3: Choose your site theme More Manage Site Themes Create
site without a theme (less distracting) There are general Google
themes & also browse more themes but be careful (some templates
are very busy & come with lots of stuff youd need to
delete)
Slide 24
Make sure edits dont go live Dont hit save until youre finished
(Google Sites autosaves drafts) OR Alter permissions so that page
is private with sign-in required If you include a lot of links on
your site, you will need to do regular maintenance to fix broken
links professional appearance At least weekly basis Ask someone
else to click on EVERYTHING & give you edits View your site
using different browsers General lessons about website
maintenance
Google Sites: my personal verdict Yes, I will use it! Tutorial
helped me a LOT (vs. trying to learn on my own) Be consistent with
colleagues profiles Would consider using for: Course website
Workshops/seminars Personal/family blog Interested in weebly, too
but one thing at a time
Slide 27
Matt: hawaii.edu, weebly
Slide 28
