Editors Letter....
What a manic month
September seemed to be! With my
kids back at school, I was hoping I could relax a little before working on the October issue!
Things never seem to go has planned do they?
First week in September I treated myself to a
day at the races, then it was my daughters
birthday, and then my son started nursery
school. It was all go!
Halloween is upon us once again. Stuck for the
scariest outfit in town, try Epworth Fancy
Dress, they have some amazing outfits. Also
Maize Maize at Hatfield Woodhouse have their
yearly Shriek Week and Pumpkin Hunt, see
page 18 for details. Don't miss it !
I hope you enjoy the photographs from the
Heritage day. I would like to thank Anthony
Catherall for all the time spent taking the
fabulous photos; it is much appreciated.
Also thank you to all those who sent
photographs of their sunflowers, you can see
them on page 19. It has put my sunflowers to
shame, I must get some tips off everyone for
next year!
Thank you for all your articles for October issue
and keep them coming in; it is your magazine, read by local people. Advertising starts from as
little as £20 + VAT per month, if you wish to
advertise your business, please give me a ring.
The deadline for November issue is Wednesday
13th October.
Have a safe and fun Halloween and enjoy the
read.
Best Wishes

Old Smithy Trip Sparked Interest
About 30 members of the Epworth Men’s Society
spent an enjoyable and informative evening at Ow-
ston Ferry’s Old Smithy on Monday (September
13) night, when they were given conducted tours
of the building.
Divided up into four parties, they were then shown
the smithy itself and a courtyard area housing
hand-made agricultural machinery and there they
were also given a demonstration of rope making.
They then returned to the Grade 11 listed building
- built in the 1850’s – to explore the museum and
heritage centre on the
first floor of the Old

many items from the
village's past and an

After some two hours
members then made

This time on Sunday 29th August they ascended to the full height of Ingleborough 2373 feet up in the

lenge dreamt up by Jack to
test himself in different ways.

These are the
current
Neighbourhood
Action Team priorities for the
Central Ward of the Isle of
Axholme.
St Andrews Church area Epworth – Youths
causing annoyance. There has been identified
recently a return to youths attending this area and
causing nuisance, theft, damage. This area has seen
a period of improved quality of life for both nearby
residents and those using the play area and church,
however there has been a return to bad behaviour
by a few people. The Neighbourhood team will
patrol and deal with any persons found or
reported to be in the area as they deem
appropriate.
Belton Playing Fields/Pavilion – Youths causing
annoyance, arson and criminal damage - We are
receiving numerous calls regarding anti-social
behaviour around the pavilion and park area.
Damage has been caused and fires have been set
to bins, which is particularly worrying and
potentially dangerous. Residents are encouraged
to call in reporting anything suspicious and to note
descriptions of those involved and any vehicles up
to no good.
Sandtoft Road/Westgate Road, Belton– this is a
particularly well used road within Belton to both
residential and business locations. There are
reports of vehicles who travel along this road
when they are not permitted to do so because of
the weight restriction in place and those that
break the speed limit. Together with out partners
we are addressing the issue and an increase in
roads policing officers in the area has been
requested. The Road Safety Partnership together
with the council are working together to tackle
the problem. UPDATE – This issue has been
problem solved. We have been informed that
Highways will change the route at this location
within the next 2 years and an identified officer
from Highways is looking at the best solution for
this. This priority is now closed.
Please be aware that Police Community Officers
are now empowered to issue £80 Fixed Penalty
notices for the following offences; - Graffiti, Fly-
posting, dog fouling and litter.

The lighter evenings and warmish weather are still
with us and the team would like to remind occu-
pants to keep checking the security of their homes
and also ensure they will withstand the bad
weather which will return. Those who still have a
break planned please pay particular attention to
the security whilst their properties are left unat-
tended.
PC’s Sally Jameson, and Tina Starbuck will be at-
tending the next Neighbourhood Action Team
meeting for the Central ward of the Isle, on Tues-
day 14th September 2010 at, The Imperial Hall,
Epworth at 7pm. The Chair Clr Liz Redfern invites
members of the public to attend the hall at 6-45pm
for the public to have an informal chat with the
Neighbourhood Action Team prior to the official
meeting which the public cannot remain at. If you
are unable to attend please contact your parish
councillor or the team to discuss any issues.
A local male was recently arrested for possession
of drugs with intent to supply, and money launder-
ing after officers stopped him in his car and smelt a
strong smell of cannabis. A further search of his
property recovered even more drugs and money.
Another male was arrested after assaulting a police
officer, obstructing police and possession of canna-
bis, together with a search of his home address
revealed further small number of cannabis plants
being cultivated. The male is on bail pending fur-
ther investigations.
7 Lakes have announced that £14,990 was raised at
the rescue event held in June. Many thanks to all
who attended and contributed on the day and to
the charities involved.
Crime remains low in the area compared to other
places in the division; however residents are re-
minded to remain vigilant with regards to theft of
lead/metal which seems to be creeping up again.

PC 1169 Sally Jameson is responsible for the
Neighbourhood Action team issues for the Central
Ward of the Isle of Axholme, and will be working
with Pc 1839 Tina Starbuck and PCSO 7577 Pear-
son. Staff conduct regular patrols the Central area
of the Isle and will be happy to discuss any commu-
nity issues with you. Please feel free to stop and
speak with him or alternatively contact us via the
above telephone number.
PC 1839 Starbuck is actively involved in the Farm-
watch scheme covering the south and central
wards of the Isle of Axholme. The scheme was set
up with the involvement of local farmers from
these wards. This was at the request of a number
of farmers to allow us to meet and discuss issues
affecting their farms. The meetings were a great
success; however the last couple of meetings have
had a poor turnout. Those farmers who have
made the time for a couple of hours still find it a
benefit and PC Starbuck would encourage any
farmer who either did attend or who wishes to
attend in the future to make a note of the next
meeting in their diary – WEDNESDAY 3rd NO-
VEMBER 2010 at 8pm at the RED LION HOTEL,
EPWORTH. The meeting only lasts at the most a
couple of hours. If you require any further details
please contact PC Starbuck. PC Starbuck reports
that there are reports of theft of diesel and equip-
ment from farms within these wards and would ask
that any information regarding these crimes be
passed to the police or Crimestoppers immedi-
ately.
The police station at Epworth also provides a front
counter service for two days a week, Monday and
Thursday, between 9am and 3pm. This can be
subject to change at short notice, but if this hap-
pens a notice will be on the front door at Epworth.

Epworth Primary School
New Term, New Year
The children are all back in school after the lazy days
of summer. They are all in new classes with their
new teachers. It is good to see all the children
dressed smartly in their uniform, with many children
also having new shoes!. The children look as bright
and shiny as our polished Hall floor in Assembly.
A special welcome to the 40 new Reception chil-
dren and parents starting with us for the first time as
well as several other new children in the other
classes. This is our largest intake for several years.
I am sure it is going to be a great year of learning
and growing together.
School Council
One of the first jobs of the new year is to elect the new School Council. This is made up of two chil-
dren from each class from Year 2 upwards who meet regularly with the Headteacher to look at ideas
to improve the school. The children elect their representatives by secret ballot following class hustings.
Over the past year the children have raised money for Children in Need and the Haiti Earthquake
Appeal as well as choosing new play equipment .I am sure the new School Council will be equally busy.
Stepping Stones
This term we are welcoming the Stepping Stones pre-school onto the school site. I am grateful to the
Local Authority for funding the building alterations needed for Stepping Stones. They have excellent
facilities with a classroom, kitchen area, toilets and changing area inside with a new outdoor play area.
The play area will be shared with our Reception children with hard and soft play and grassed areas. This
replaces a small paved area we have had to use up to now so it will be a big improvement for the
school.
We are looking forward to working with Stepping Stones for the benefit of all our children.
With best wishes.
John Hodgkins
Headteacher

The Isle of Axholme Where You Live Your Local History
Adapted by Anthony Catherall
The Drainage of the Isle (continued)
The past 250 years have seen continual improvement and extension of the drainage of the Isle of Axholme. In 1763 there was a record flood when the Idle and Torne broke their
banks and laid waste thousands of acres. It was the culmination of years of damaged crops.
It needed the disaster to make people realise that new drainage works were needed. In 1764 John Smeaton, a famous Civil Engineer, was consulted and he suggested the
deepening of the drains and for some more relief drains, but finance for the scheme was not available. In 1795 an Act of Parliament provide for the enclosure of Commons including
£20,000 for new drains. Acting upon Smeaton’s suggestions Foster cut a new drain in 1795. From Bull Hassocks it took the Old River Idle’s bed and then ran parallel to Vermuyden’s
New River Torne to Pilfrey’s Bridge where it took the channel of the New River Torne to
Althorpe. The New River Torne took the channel of the New River Idle and a new channel called the North River was cut to Keadby. The new drain from Bullock Hassocks is now
called the South level Engine Drain.
About the same time the ‘Folly’ drain was dug. Unofficially it was called ‘Foster’s Folly’. It
ran from Bull Hassocks pumping station alongside Foster’s other drain for part of the way to
Pilfrey Bridge and from there to the River Trent at Derrythorpe. A second cut to Keadby was made from Pilfrey Bridge to enable both Althorpe sluices to
take the New Torne water. The New idle River was passed under the Torne at Pilfrey and thence to Keadby.
About 1813 another new drain called ‘Cataline’ was dug to help the drainage of the Santoft area. It runs parallel to the Hatfield Waste Drain and is southern of the Double
Rivers. Just before Pilfrey Bridge it goes under its partner and is the northern of the Three
Rivers to Keadby.
The drainage was so well improved by these new works that there were even complaints that the new land was to dry! However in 1828 the summer was so wet that for weeks on
end, the Trent was too high to accept water from Axholme. A committee set up to look at
the problem concluded that the drains ought to drain straight to Adlingfleet which is what, 200 years earlier, Vermuyden ought to have done. George Leather in July 1829 surveyed
the water levels of the Trent and recommended a direct drain to the Humber. His plans envisaged a huge waterway 150 feet wide at the bottom, thus with sloping and banking
would be about 300 feet wide. It would be excavated from Idle Stop to the Humber. He anticipated it as a tidal river with ships using it and Bykersdike as a route to Gainsborough.
The cost estimated was around £354,000. Sixteen trial borings were actually made to plan
the route. Doubtless, it would have been built, for an Act of Parliament authorised the work; but for the development and introduction of pumping stations.
Continued next month. Make sure you see a copy of the Arrow...

Now & Then – Then & Now No 18 By Anthony Catherall
Here is Haxey in bygone days and compare to today’s images!
I was delighted to receive this rare card from Steve Goulding of Epworth; he
will receive a voucher to enjoy the delights of Jonathan
David’s at High Street Epworth. Being an ex Royal Engineer myself, the card was even more poignant to me. Here we see a detachment of 46 men and officers from the 4th West Riding Territorials who formed the Firing Party led by Lieut. Yates of Doncaster. They headed the procession at the funeral of Sapper 50954 Thomas Eustace Preston 15th Signal Company Royal Engineers. Sapper Preston died on duty at Aldershot following a 14-mile route march on 19 February 1915 aged 28 years. He was the son of local Haxey Headmaster of the Church of England School close by Mr John Thomas Preston, (known locally as Tommy) and his wife Clara. The funeral service was conducted by the Vicar (Rev. J.W Shepherd, M.A.), at the graveside in the churchyard of St Nicholas Church Haxey. Special thanks go to Gavin & Liz Berry of Haxey who helped in my research and led me to Thomas’s grave. In the lower picture taken on 15 May 2010, the trees are in full leaf now almost covering the same house as above (but much altered now. Notice also the wall that has been halved in the picture below taken on 15 May 2010. A fuller report of the Sapper Preston’s funeral can be found in the Epworth Bells dated Saturday, February 27, 1915 in the Mechanic’s Institute in Epworth.

During the period 9th - 12th September, St Andrew's Church, Epworth
hosted an event with a theme of 'Lincolnshire at War' concentrating on
WW1 and WW2 with emphasis on social history aspects of the Isle of
Axholme. This was in association with the Lincolnshire Heritage Open
Days.
Prior to the exhibition over 30 people came forward with many items of memorabilia, printed articles and
memories, many of which had been recorded enabling visitors to pause and listen and share. Over the
weekend the church was full of items such as the diary of Gunner Clifford Spencer a POW captured
during the Battle of Tobruk during WW2 and some of the many letters which passed between him and his
wife and small daughter, items of clothing made with material obtained on the black market ... Dispatch
Rider's motor cycle, ... rifle, uniforms, and much, much more - unfortunately we couldn't get anyone to try
on a gas mask.
Approximately 600 people visited the exhibition and what was particularly poignant was the many memo-
ries shared and relived bringing smiles and sometimes tears to faces and the memory will stay with us for
a very long time. The weekend was very rewarding and we felt very honoured and humble to have been
entrusted with such precious items enabling us to provide an opportunity for the community to come
along and share the moving stories of local people affected by war and it made the hard work of several
weeks quickly fade into insignificance.
Our thanks go to everyone who provided items for display, the many visitors who came and of course
those who helped in any way to make this a very successful few days.
Best Wishes Margaret Draper
What language do you speak? I recently read about the
precarious condition of many of the
languages of the world. Apparently
4% of the world’s languages are
spoken by 96% of the people, and
the remaining 96% of the languages
spoken by only 4%. As an English speaker this does
not appear a problem, but I recall when at a uni-
versity in Wales, being invited to take beginners
Welsh, and considering very carefully w hether I
really wanted to put effort into a minority lan-
guage, which at best would only be of limited use.
The same applies to dialects that appear to be fast
disappearing.
What unites Christians is not the lan-
guage of the tongue but the language of the heart,
the language of love. We sing the hymn “Lord thy
church on earth is seeking, thy renewal from above,
teach us all the art of speaking with the accent of thy
love.” For the Christian the one true language is
spoken by 100% of the community. If you say but
love is not a language, well St Francis of Assisi told
his followers to go and preach the gospel –and use
words only if you have to. In all our relationships
may our language be love.

Heritage Pavement
In 2011 the interior of St Andrew’s Church Epworth
will be undergoing a significant refurbishment. The
funding for this vital work has been secured, the
greater part being a grant of £457,500 from the Heri-
tage Lottery Fund. This has been awarded to enable St
Andrew’s to explain more fully the history and heri-
tage of Epworth and the Isle of Axholme.
As part of the redevelopment the ancient baptismal
font is to be moved to a central position at the back
of the Church which we think may be its original
position. Set into the floor around the font will be up
to 200 clay tiles depicting some aspect of the story of
Epworth and the Isle from ancient times to the pre-
sent day, hopefully leaving some space for future sig-
nificant events. These tiles would be similar to the
ones in the time line in the pavement in Doncaster
and other places.
The tiles would be designed by individuals, groups and
schools who may wish to create the actual outline
themselves. This would be done under the supervision
of Jon Cocks of Axholme Arts so no particular art-
work skills would be required. The tiles would then
be fired professionally by Len and Janet Latham, ce-
ramics artists of Belton.
We would like to involve as many local people and organisations as possible. For the individual member of
the community or group representative who may be interested they are invited to drop in for a coffee
between 10.00 am and 12 pm on Saturday 13th November in St Andrew’s Church to discuss. Schools and
groups will receive a personal invitation to take part. We hope that the pavement will be complete by the
early part of 2012.
We are particularly keen for local schools to be involved in this project which we hope would be valuable
in helping young people to discover the story of their community. As we hope that this will be a perma-
nent feature of St Andrew’s Church those that take part will be able to show their children and grandchil-
dren what they did when they were at school.
It is also envisaged that a time capsule will be placed under the pavement.

News from Belton All Saints CE Primary
I am writing this article at the very beginning of the new academic year. Pupils have returned to
school well after the Summer break and we are pleased to welcome many new families to our
school community.
One of the first jobs of the year is for classes to choose a representative to be part of our school
council. The council is just one of the ways that we encourage pupils to become active and
supportive members of our community involved in some of the decision making processes that
affect them within school. Pupils are encouraged to take on regular responsibilities and they
regularly volunteer for roles such as librarians, buddys and reading partners. Last year, for the first
time, we were able to link to the North Lincolnshire Volunteer project which allows us to reward
Y6 pupils with Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards for the voluntry services they provide.
Best wishes Sarah Groves
Headteacher
Our School Council – A report by Year 6 School Council Reps Emily (Chair) and Mitchel (Vice Chair)
‘We have a school council so that we can help make our school a better place to be. We have some great
ideas to improve the school and think the adults should listen to our point of view when they make decisions
that will affect us. Every class votes for a school council representative who will go to school council meetings
and let their class know what has been discussed. They will ask their class for ideas or comments to take to
the next meeting. We like to organise fund raising events and activities to support different charities.
Sometimes council members are asked to meet visitors and to show them around school or to represent the
school in other ways.

Women’s Institute (WI) Report
September meeting
This month’s meeting was held in the Red Lion in Epworth market place on
the 14th, and was essentially a social and quiz night as an easy entry into the
winter programme following the short summer break. The first order of
business was to inform the meeting that our group entries into the annual
Epworth Agricultural Show had done really well, gaining both 1st and 2nd prize in Class 1, which involved
displaying five different items and included crafts, produce, cakes, jams and plants. We were awarded a
rather spectacular looking cup for the 1st prize.
Attendance this evening was rather reduced as many members were still on holiday with one or two being
ill. To those who are ill, we wish a speedy recovery.
After the routine business the quiz was started with a music section with the theme ―classical ads‖. 20
pieces of classical music which had all been used in TV advertisements was played and we had to name the
products. A very testing section, one has to admit, with most of us recognising the music, but not the
products. Maybe we don’t watch too much TV. The second section of the quiz was a little easier s it was
a picture round, with ten famous faces and ten views from famous bridges. Almost everyone could name
the famous faces, with a varied reaction to the famous bridges. Quite a challenging quiz, but enjoyed by
all. Special thanks went to Gill who supplied us with a delicious selection of cakes.
The next meeting will be on the 12th of October, again in the Red Lion, at 7-45pm

Beyond The Standard Driving Test Dear readers, The government has made the standard Driving Test more difficult in recent years, with the addition of a multiple-choice test and a computerised hazard-awareness assessment.
However it still only involves learning the most fundamental driving skills and doesn’t include preparation for poor-weather or motorway driving. The standard L-test is simply an introduction to driving a vehicle. Your further education takes place on today’s congested roads and provides a steep and often precarious learning curve, this is where Driver education comes in.
On the U/K’s congested roads it’s important that you’re always in the right frame of mind to drive. A positive attitude will help to reduce the risk of collisions through tolerance and courtesy, by being realistic as to your own abilities, and by maintaining a high degree of care for your own safety and others.
Driving on UK roads can be very stressful, but you must always remain cool-headed tolerant and courteous–helping to avoid or diffuse any threatening situations. Don’t let your driving standards be affected by other motorist’s mistakes or behaviour.
Stay relaxed, don’t be provoked and remember that, if you do make a mistake an apologetic wave is often all it takes to put things right. Don’t let your enthusiasm for driving tempt you into breaking the speed limit or driving dangerously always know what
speed you are doing and know what the maximum speed limit is. Remember timid drivers can be as dangerous as aggressive drivers. Always expect the worst from other motorists and try to understand what they are aiming to achieve. If you allow for poor
observation and slow reactions, you’ll find you’re always prepared for the worst-case scenario. Whether you’re a novice motorist or an experienced driver, you’ll always find room to improve your driving skills. Keep an open mind, be realistic about your limitations and always be prepared to learn from any errors you make. When following other drivers, always apply the two-second rule if you suspect they may not be totally focused on their
driving, leave an even bigger gap to give you extra braking time. Tailgating is a common cause of collisions, it is dangerous and antisocial and can never be condoned. 1.The Driving Position.
One of the most important aspects of driving a modern machine involves achieving the perfect driving position every time
you get behind the wheel. This allows you maximum control over your vehicle and will keep you more comfortable and
alert on longer journey’s It’s also the position most often adopted by racing drivers, especially rally and touring car drivers.
Sit in the car with the base of your spine in the back of the seat to prevent back problems.
Hold the wheel at ten-to-two or quarter-to-three. Keep your thumbs vertical.
Whenever possible adjust the steering wheel rake for improved control and to enable you to see all the dashboard
instruments.
Make sure your arms are slightly bent.
Your legs should be slightly bent too when your feet are on
the pedals.
The back of the seat should be fairly upright giving you a
good view of the road ahead, mirrors, display and dials.
Ensure that head restraints are adjusted so that they align
with the top of you head.

Secret Garden Help the Heroes
Every year at Secret Garden Private Childcare based in Crowle, we pick a charity and organise a fundrais-
ing event for it. This year we decided upon Help 4 Heroes as we had been approached by John Armson to
put up a poster promoting the Rescue Day at The Seven Lakes which was to raise money for the Help 4
Heroes Charity, the decision to support this charity was also influenced by the children who attend our
Nursery as the previous month they had been interested in learning about fire fighters and the police, so it
all fitted together nicely.
It was decided we would do a sponsored walk around Ealand with everyone dressed up as people who
help us, we had children dressed up as Police people, Fire Fighters, Nurses, Soldiers and Doctors. We had
a lot of children come and join us for the walk and a lot of parents who came to support us and help us
walk safely around Ealand. The children had a wonderful time and we stopped off at Ealand Park for re-
freshments and a play which they thoroughly enjoyed. All the
children were tired when they got back but I am proud to say
we raised a grand total of £624.70.
We have had a brilliant experience raising money for the Help
4 Heroes charity, linking in with a community event and the
children have learnt so much, I would just like to say a big
thank you everyone who came and joined us on our sponsored
walk and to everyone who sponsored us it means a great deal
to us all and finally a big thank you to John Armson for organis-
ing a brilliant hand over for the cheques, the children enjoyed
every minute, thank you for letting us be a part of that.
