It’s time to pay.

In the town of Slurry, New York, post-war recession has bitten.

Claire Zachanassian, improbably beautiful and impenetrably terrifying, returns to her hometown as the world’s richest woman.

The locals hope her arrival signals a change in their fortunes, but they soon realise that prosperity will only come at a terrible price.

Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s visionary revenge play is transported into mid-20th-century America by Tony Kushner (Angels in America). Jeremy Herrin (People, Places and Things, This House) directs Lesley Manville (The Phantom Thread, Long Day’s Journey into Night) as the ruthless heiress and Hugo Weaving (The Matrix) as her former love.

Rural Suffolk, 1759. As the country waits for Halley’s comet, Sally Poppy is sentenced to hang for a heinous murder.

When she claims to be pregnant, a jury of 12 matrons are taken from their housework to decide whether she’s telling the truth, or simply trying to escape the noose.

With only midwife Lizzy Luke prepared to defend the girl, and a mob baying for blood outside, the matrons wrestle with their new authority, and the devil in their midst.

Lucy Kirkwood (Mosquitoes, Chimerica) returns to the National Theatre with her new play, directed by James Macdonald. Maxine Peake (Black Mirror, Funny Cow) plays Lizzy, and Ria Zmitrowicz (The Doctor), Sally.

After the death of his dad, Michael is powerless and angry.

In a state of heartbreak, he confronts the difficult truths about his father’s legacy and the country that shaped him.

At the funeral, unannounced and unprepared, Michael decides it is time to speak.

Rafe Spall (Hedda Gabler, Black Mirror) performs this fearless one-person play which asks explosive and enduring questions about identity, race and class in Britain. It is written for him by Roy Williams (Sucker Punch, Sing Yer Heart Out for the Lads) and Clint Dyer (The Happy Tragedy of Being Woke), who becomes the first Black British artist to have performed, written and directed at the National Theatre.

First staged at the National Theatre in 1996, Robert Lepage’s masterpiece returns to London for just nine performances. Presented as part of a world tour, this new staging marks 75 years since the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima.

Tracing survivors and their descendants across five decades, this giant theatrical journey through time and space explores the way in which a few kilograms of uranium falling on Japan changed the course of human history.

‘Lepage’s shows have dazzled a global audience. His profound theatrical experiences explore history and the tiny humans swept up within it.’ Guardian

The performance will last 7 hours and includes two intervals plus a 45-minute dinner break and two pauses.

Dialogue is presented in English, French, German and Japanese with English subtitles.

St George’s Park Tea Room, Port Elizabeth, 1950. On a long rainy afternoon, employees Sam and Willie practise their steps for the finals of the ballroom dancing championship.

Hally arrives from school to hide out in his parents’ tea room. These two men have been unlikely best friends to Hally his whole life. But it is apartheid era South Africa: he’s Master Harold, and they are the boys.

Tony Award-winning playwright Athol Fugard’s semi-autobiographical and blistering masterwork explores the nature of friendship, and the ways people are capable of hurting even those they love.

Roy Alexander Weise (Nine Night) directs Lucian Msamati (Amadeus) and Hammed Animashaun (Barber Shop Chronicles) as Sam and Willie.

‘An essential watch’ Time Out on LOVE

In a run-down community hall on the edge of town, a woman has been cooking lunch for those in need.

A choir is starting up, run by a volunteer who’s looking for a new beginning. A mother is seeking help in her fight to keep her young daughter from being taken into care. An older man sits silently in the corner, the first to arrive, the last to leave. Outside the rain is falling.

Alexander Zeldin’s new play promises to be another uncompromising theatrical experience that goes to the heart of our uncertain times.

In April 2020, Thea Sharrock directs Jack Absolute Flies Again, written by Richard Bean and Oliver Chris, based on Sheridan’s The Rivals – with the action relocated to the Battle of Britain. Lyricist, novelist, poet and playwright, Kate Tempest makes her NT debut with Paradise, a potent and dynamic reimagining of Philoctetes by Sophocles. Lesley Sharp will play the title role with Ian Rickson directing.

Moira Buffini’s timely new play Manor, with Nancy Carroll and Ben Daniels, directed by Fiona Buffini, opens in April 2020.

In the Dorfman Theatre

Francesca Martinez debuts at the NT with her new play, All of Us, which explores life and love during a time of austerity. Martinez herself plays the lead role; Ian Rickson directs. Welcome to Iran, a new play written and directed by Nadia Fall, will play a limited run opening in May. This is a Theatre Royal Stratford East and National Theatre co-production.

Opening times For a full list of individual outlets and building opening times, visit nationaltheatre.org.uk The entire building will be closed on Tuesday 24 and Wednesday 25 December.

Guidance on suitability We don’t publish specific age recommendations for all our shows. For guidance on content and suitability please call 020 7452 3000. Children under four are welcome in the foyers, however they cannot be admitted to the auditoriums.

For your safety and comfort Strobe lighting, smoke effects and gunshots are sometimes used in productions. Details are available from the Box Office after the first preview.

Latecomers may not be admitted. All bulky items such as bags and rucksacks must be left at the free cloakrooms.

Ticket exchange There are no refunds on tickets, but you can exchange them for another performance or for credit. Terms and conditions and a small administration fee apply, call the Box Office for details: 020 7452 3000.

This cover was created with the Carpentry department.

They are responsible for the construction of scenery that appears on the stages of the National Theatre: even though a door or wall could look marble or concrete, it nearly always starts as sheets of birch ply or MDF. The highly skilled carpenters work from technical drawings to build timber flattage (walls), windows, doors and staircases. They also build large prop elements such as benches, bars and fireplaces. The department is conscious of the environmental impact of scenery making and strives to reuse as much as possible.

The Carpentry department ranges from young apprentices to carpenters with over 30 years’ experience.
