Finedon Buffs (RAOB)
Finedon Buffs are pleased to announce that they have now completed the installation of the lamp posts for the Floodlights in the Church yard and would like to offer their sincere thanks to Mick Bunyan of Street Furniture Supplies for supplying the posts at a very advantageous price. Also Paterson Fabrications for doing all the welding. Graham at M and M Webb for supplying the steel to extend the posts and the use of the facilities to carry out the work required. The Churchwardens and PCC would like to thank all these people for their time, generosity and kindness without which we would not have the floodlights working again which have given much pleasure to the people of Finedon.
Andy Mitchell
The Church wardens and PCC would like to convey our sincere thanks and appreciation to Andy Mitchell and his team who have installed and connected the new Floodlights. What a very good job they did too. Two very polite young men who were working on the lights made sure the remnants of the old lights were removed and the area tidied up before finishing their work. Thank you Andy once again, thank you for your kindness and for the time you gave to make sure the flood lights were working for the Flower Festival. To sponsor the floodlights ask any Church member to give you a form and return to Jane Read or Neil Forster or any Church member. Sponsorship for one week is £10.00.
Flower Festival
The Flower Festival Committee would like to thank everyone who helped to make this year’s Festival another great success as we could not do it without all your support, however small. Also thanks to Jonathon Reynolds and his singers for a fantastic concert which approximately 230 people attended and greatly enjoyed. This raised £1,150. The total amount raised over the weekend was in the region of £3,000. Our thanks to everyone once again.

In my DayIn my DayIn my DayIn my Day The ramblings of Hubert James
In my day it was about this time of year that their would be a chill in the air and folk would get out that extra blanket. Course in them days we didn’t have the likes of continental quilts or radiators. You’d wake up in the morning to find frost on the inside of the window. What ever happened to them glistening cobwebs that covered every privet hedge as you walked to school? What happened to privet? Anyway, the way to keep extra warm in my day was to get a dog. In fact everyone had a dog of some description. A naturally warm creature is your regular dog. You needed to choose wisely. Folk avoided Jack Russells and Whippets. You needed something with a decent coat. A sheep dog was favourite. We used to train them to jump up on the bed and act as a hot water bottle. Anyone who has a dog knows that when I say ‘train’, it’s not exactly difficult. All dogs have the ‘Bed Gene’ that forces them, almost against their will to seek out a nice soft bed. And out beds were the softest. We had feather mattresses that you sank into. Once you were in you couldn’t move and when you got up you left a you shaped hole where you’d been. Apparently, you can pay a lot of money for a mattress that does that nowadays. Now I know what you’re thinking; furry dogs, feathers, equals allergies. Now in my day, we didn’t have allergies. Nobody sneezed when the cat
crept in. Mind you we didn’t have that horrible musty Oilseed Rape smell to inhale. So you’d get your sheep dog up on the bed with his long coat and he’d sort of take in all the cold in the room and convert it into warmth. If you’ve seen it, you’ll know what I mean. They shake as they do it. It’s where we get the phrase ‘Collie Wobbles’ from. Like I say you needed to choose your dog carefully. There’d be a roaring trade in puppies during late summer. We used to get ours from a Border Collie breeder called Phil Drabble. He worked out a rating system for how thick a dogs coat would grow and so you could work out how warm he’d keep you. You’ll have heard of Phil. We used to call his rating system: One Man and His Tog.
