Our next major event will be November 16th, when we
will hold our Community Problems Assembly at St.
John’s Catholic Church. There the network members
will learn more about this year’s priorities and our next
steps.
Meanwhile, Pastor Matt continues his leadership with
Justice Matters, representing the organization on the
city’s new Affordable Housing Advisory Board. Please
pray for him and for the Board as they begin their work
this coming week.
Hostetter-DeFries Family Endowed
Cultural Event
Dr. John Upton,
President of the Bap-
tist World Alliance,
will be speaking at
Ottawa University on
Wednesday night,
Nov. 18 a 8:00 p.m.
in the O.U. Chapel.
He will speak again
Nov. 19 at 11:00 a.m., also in the chapel.
Dr. Upton spoke at our senior adult retreat several years ago,
and at that time we began our efforts to bring him to Ottawa
for the Cultural event. He is a very engaging speaker and we
wanted those at First Baptist to know about this opportunity.
All are invited to attend. ~Stanley & Alice Jo DeFries
Fearless
November Worship Series Nov. 8-22
In Richard Louv’s groundbreaking book on how we as a society must become better stewards of our environment, for the good of the world and our own souls, he includes several chapters about the place of fear in our society. When I first read the book, I was shocked....
What does a conversation about environmental stewardship have to do with fear?
But the more I read, the more I understood the connection. It seems that fear and stewardship are inextricably linked. In short, those motivated and mastered by fear simply will not be able to share resources, steward the gifts in their care, or enjoy the abun-dance that they receive.
In other words, fear kills stewardship.
As we enter into a congregational conversation about stewardship this month, talking and planning and praying through the coming year’s ministry plan, our worship series will be an opportunity to explore these themes as we seek to move from a perspective of fear to one of abundance. Thirteenth Century theologian Meister Eckhart wrote:
“There, where clinging to things ends, is where God begins to be.”
Let us explore together the Scripture’s teachings about stewardship and how to stop “clinging” and start to open our clinched hands to God’s grace.
