    Healthy

    "Treating" &

    HalloweenSafety Tips

    Source: Palmetto Health

    Children's Hospital

The candy aisles are stocked andthe Jack-O-Lanterns illuminat-ed, reminding us that Halloween

is just around the corner. Whilechildren eagerly plan their Hal-loween costumes, PalmettoHealth Children's Hospital offers

parents tips for a fun, but safeHalloween.

    Trick-or-Treating

    Make sure your child eats

dinner before setting out.Children will be less likelyto eat too much candy andwill have more energy for

    the fun ahead.

    An adult should accompany

children under 12 years old.Children ages 13-15 shouldtravel in groups of at least

    three.

    Trick-or-treat in your neigh-

    borhood, where you knowthe neighbors.

    Consider going during day-

    light hours.

    Only visit homes

with decorations, outdoorlighting and porch lights

    illuminated.

Teach your child his or her

    phone number. An older child

can carry a cellphone to checkin while away from home, butremind the child about thedangers of distracted walk-

    ing.

    Instruct children never

to enter a home or apartmentbuilding unless accompaniedby an adult.

    Remind children never to

accept rides from strangers.Drivers should go slowly allevening.

    Children should be educated

    to obey all traffic rules.Candy

    Insist that children show you

all their goodies before theysample them. Inspect candy

for tampering. Never eat fruit, unwrapped items, or candynot in its original wrapper.

    A few days after Hallow-

een, put the candy out of sight

and out of mind. You canration out the treats later.

If you want to provide non-

    candy alternatives for trick-or-

treaters, consider packages ofcrackers, single-serve box-es of cereal, granola bars, packaged fruit rolls, mini-boxes of raisins and single-

serve bags of chips or pop-corn.

    Non-edible treats including

pencils, stickers and erasersalso are good alternatives.

    Costumes

Have children wear cos-tumes with light, brightcolors that will be clearly

visible to motorists; attachreflective tape, glow sticks

or glow-in-the-dark acces-sories to increase visibilityat night.

    Make sure that costumes--

including wigs, masks andbeards--are flame resistant, and remind children to stayaway from open flames,

    candles and jack-o-lanterns.

Make sure that masks donot impair vision.

    Avoid costumes with big,

    baggy sleeves; billowingskirts; or long,dragging

hems that could causesomeone to trip. High-heelsor oversized shoes also cancause accidents.

    Make sure that swords,

knives and other props aremade of flexible materialand do not have sharp edg-

    es.

    Attach your child's name,

phone number (includingarea code) and address in-side your child's clothing in

case the child gets separatedfrom adults.
