    Dear Editor:

Im writing to express my support orFlip Phillips to be on the MississippiSupreme Court. Ive known Flip ormany years and have been impressedwith his strong amily values, work ethic and commitment to airness. He is the type o person who treatseveryone airly and with respect.

Tis sense o airness comes romhis Christian aith. He is a li e-longmember o Batesville PresbyterianChurch, where he served as deacon, elder, and trustee.

I also think Flip would be a goodSupreme Court justice because hehas over 40 years o legal experience. He has served as an assistant districtattorney; as Batesville city attorney;and corporate counsel or Dunlap

and Kyle Co. and other Mississippibusinesses. I think that Flips widerange o legal experience, rom civilto criminal, would make him a strongasset to the court and to the people.

Most importantly, I know that Flip isa man o integrity and that he believesour courts should be impartial, respect ul, and ree rom outsidein uence. I think that this is the typeo integrity we need on the SupremeCourt and it is why he has my support.

I spent most o my pro essionalli e in the business o behaviorchange, developing programs toencourage people to modi y andimprove their health practices. Ilearned, early on, that people willchange their behavior not so much onthe basis o the intrinsic value o the product, but on its ascribedvalue. I you can sell soap, you cansell nutrition, I trumpeted in India in1970, and helped launch programs o Social Marketing, a discipline basedon commercial advertising which isstill current today.

Tere was and is nothing new in the idea. Advertising executives, masters o subtle persuasion, have sold us products based onthe promise o everything but thebene ts o the product itsel . In theheady days o Madison Avenue inthe 50s and 60s, cars were sold orsex appeal, cigarettes or their cool, and beer or camaraderie. Image waseverything. imes have changed andadvertising o en hypes a cars mileageor sa ety rating but these ads areaimed at people whose image dependson cost-e ectiveness, rugality, andcommon sense. Te Camry, or years

the best-selling car in America, is many things - but sexy it is not. It is de nitely sold on image, just a di erent image.

Te Prius is a amous example o image trumping reality. Te car hasbecome so much the darling o theprogressive environmental set, thatit is the go-to product or comedianspillorying the chattering classes.

Tere are too many wonder uland success ul examples o commercialadvertising dressing up mundane

products in brightly colored Hollywoodwrappings to name. Te point is now asclear as it always has been advertisingdeliberately, unashamedly manipulatesthe consuming public. New laws havebeen passed to regulate downrightdeceit, but canny hucksters haveound ways to be honest but toconvey something dishonest. We, theconsumers, are complicit in this. Whowants Soviet-era Brabants, products inplain, cardboard packaging, or Iranianchadors? We are what we buy and havebeen ever since the rst cavewoman puton a bear-tooth necklace.

Richard Taler and Cass Sunsteinhave written a book called Nudge:

Improving Decisions About Health,Wealth, and Happiness (reviewed inthe New York imes) where they talk about using advertising techniquesto promote better wel are among theAmerican populace. Te authors havegenerated renewed interest becausethey have been recently hired asconsultants to the UK Governmentto apply their techniques to socialprograms there (BBC Hard alk 10.24.12 ).

As mentioned above, thisconcept is not new. Long be ore SocialMarketing, governments engaged inpropaganda, whether it was promotingthe martial image o NationalSocialism, the solidarity o SovietCommunism, or the patriotic duty o buying War Bonds. In recent years, state governments have sponsored various health campaigns like theamous Florida e ort to reduce teenagesmoking. Te campaign was basednot on health bene ts, but played onadolescents rebellious behavior andidealistic sentiments. Every dollar youspend on cigarettes, said the ads, goesinto the pockets o at-cat capitalists.(Enter the Monopoly-style image o Wall Street) It worked.

Taler and Sunstein ocuson another aspect o marketmanipulation simple changesin service o erings which make itimpossible or a consumer not todo the right thing. Te amous ando -quoted example given is the y painted on the inside o a urinal. Menapparently like to aim and shoot, and most hit the y with little lateralspray. Te book ra c talks o many e orts by highway planners tomanipulate driver behavior. Te length

o each dotted line on an interstate, orexample, in uences speed the shorterthey are, the aster the perceived speedo the driver, who then slows down.Another example is the eliminationo trays at school ca eterias. Studentscannot simply pile their trays withood, but must take their plates back orseconds. Te result is that they eat less, and addressing sophomore spreadbecomes less o an issue.

All o this is ne and good. Why shouldnt government resort to thesame manipulative techniques asadvertising? Why is selling betternutrition any di erent rom sellingsoap, as I proposed 40 years ago?

Te troublesome proposal o Sunstein and Taler is the opt-outclause. Product manu acturers andservice providers, based on solidpsychological research, understandthat the loss o something is perceivedas ar worse than never having had itin the rst place. Rebates and couponsare staple items o marketers becausepeople pay ull reight up ront, getused to the item, and in requently do the cumbersome paperwork tobe returned a ew dollars. Opt-in toa particular medical, insurance, orsavings plan and once you see thebene ts, you are unlikely to opt-out. Opt-in, Opt-out is ar moresuccess ul in con rming a consumer

choice than simply asking customersWould you like to buy X? Money-back guarantees are staple marketingploys.

Te charge o manipulationcomes when the o ering party makesit easier or you to pick his choicerather than the one you might chooseupon re ection. It might be opt-instyle: Pick Plan B and i you dont likeit you can opt out, or simply placingthe Plan B choice at the top o thelist. Marketers have worked tirelessly

not only to manipulate your purchaseo one product, but to choose the mostpro table rom among many.

Still, its all well and good, butthe authors cynically say that this reedom o choice is libertarian inorigin. Giving people choice is theright thing to do to protect individualliberty. Tey go on to say that thismanipulation is also paternalistic; oryes, the government does know betterthan the general public. Tis avowedpaternalism is what is most disturbingand distaste ul about the book:

Teir entire line o argument - that peoplerequently make decisionsthat are not in their ownbest interest, that o en reemarkets and open competitionwill tend to exacerbate ratherthan mitigate the e ects o human railty [and thatgovernment must step into right these wrongs] isdeeply subversive o standardree- market, anti-regulation,small-government thinking, but supportive o many interventionist inclinations, say the authors.

Nudge is a long book (almost 300 pages) to state theobvious and then come to the mostinsidious conclusion. Read it tobetter understand the psychology o marketing, but be prepared or thepredictable progressive conclusions.

A presidential election is almostupon us. But, i you have youngchildren or grandchildren, you know

whats really important this week isButter ngers, not ballots, and PopRocks, not the popular vote.

Yes, its Halloween time again, which means youll see plenty o witches and vampires scurryingaround. Youll no doubt nd these

characters more amusing thanrightening, but you dont have tolook ar to nd things that are a bitmore alarming such as these scary investment moves:

Paying too much attention tothe headlines - Some headlinesmay seem unnerving, but dontabandon your investment strategy just because the news o the day appears grim.

Chasing hot investments - Youcan get hot investment tips romthe talking heads on television, your next-door neighbor or justabout anybody. But, even i the tipwas accurate at one point, by the

time you get to a hot investment,it may already be cooling down. And, even more importantly, itsimply may not be appropriate oryour individual risk tolerance andgoals.

Ignoring di erent types o investment risk - Most investorsare aware o the risk o losingprincipal when investing in stocks. But i you shun stocks totally in avor o perceived risk- reeinvestments, youd be making amistake, because all investmentscarry some type o risk. Forexample, with xed-incomeinvestments, including CDs andbonds, one risk you will encounteris in ation risk - the risk that yourinvestment will provide you withreturns that wont even keep upwith in ation and will, there ore, result in a loss o purchasing powerover time. Another risk you willincur is interest-rate risk - the risk that new bonds will be issued at

higher rates, driving down theprice o your bonds. Bonds alsocarry the risk o de ault, thoughyou can reduce this risk by stickingwith bonds that receive the highestratings rom independent ratingagencies.

Failing to diversi y - I you only own one type o investment, and a market downturn a ectsthat particular asset class, yourport olio could take a big hit. Butby spreading your dollars among

an array o vehicles, such as stocks, bonds and government securities, you can reduce the e ects o volatility on your holdings.(Keep in mind, though, thatdiversi cation cannot guaranteepro ts or protect against loss.)

Focusing on the short term - I youconcentrate too much on short-term results, you may react to apiece o bad news, or to a periodo extreme price gyrations, by making investment moves that arecounterproductive to your goals.Furthermore, i youre constantly seeking to instantaneously turnaround losses, youll likely rack upees, commissions and possibly taxes. Avoid all these hassles by keeping your eyes on the utureand sticking to a long-term,personalized strategy.

You cant always make the per ectinvestment choices. But by steeringclear o the scary moves described

above, you can work toward your long-term goals and hope ully avoid some o the more earsome results.

he Southside o Columbusprobably has more ghosts than almostany place on Earth. hey makethemselves known in many ways.We all are amiliar with Miss Nellieo Errollton, who etched her name ona parlor window with her engagementring. Some ghosts speak to us. Someare pranksters who hide our keys, orlicker the lights and other electricaldevices, in our homes. But, the mostdramatic are the ones who actually

show themselves to us. In thisneighborhood, not only are they seen, but many are stopping in or a riendly visit.

here are two houses here whosespirit-residents are not content to

remain in ghostly isolation. hey liketo reveal themselves to visitors andmake social calls to their next-doorneighbors. he Lincoln Home (714hird Avenue South) and Amzi LoveHome (305 7th Street South) havemuch in common. hey are connectednot only by a lovely garden, but are alsoowned by married couple Brenda andSid Caradine.

he Lincoln home is operated, these days, as a bed and break ast by charming hostess, Brenda. However, she must share her duties as the lady

o the house. his home has a so tspirit who dri ts rom room to room, checking on her guests. She has beenseen by Brenda, and has also lookedin on guests in a downstairs bedroom. Her presence is com orting; not at allscary. his ghost is certainly no threat

to the B & B guests. She is just makingsure everyone is com ortable in thisbeauti ully restored home.

Just next door is Amzi Love. SidCaradine is the seventh generationo his amily to live in this gem. hehouse, built in 1848, still containsthe original urnishings rom thatperiod. It is open or tours, year-round (Call (662) 328-5413 or timesand prices.). I you are lucky, you justmight get to see Mr. Sid in authenticperiod costume, portraying his greatgrand ather General Amzi Love.

But, ew guests get to meet thehomes more mysterious inhabitant. Alovely, but transparent, woman loatsrom the kitchen door, near the rearo the home, and makes her way tohe Lincoln Home, next door. She hasbeen seen iltering through cars parked

along the curb, and then turningtoward and entering he LincolnHome. his visitor needs no doorbell, because she just passes through thewalls and locked doors as i they didnot exist. Oh well, only a good riend isallowed such privileges.

hese two guests are easy toplease. hey require no o er o sweettea, just a riendly greeting to let themknow that they are welcome.

For 2013, Social Security recipients will get a whopping 1.7percent increase in their monthly checks starting in January. Only aew times since 1975 has that rate o increase been so low. For a person whoreceives the average $1,230 per month, that increase will amount to $20.91extra.

Dont spend it all in one place.

he small increase is due to theConsumer Price Index, which SocialSecurity adjustments are based on. heU.S. Department o Agriculture saysthe index increased just 1.7 percentoverall in the iscal year ended Sept. 30,2012.

he USDA does concede thatbecause o the droughts in the Midwest(the worst in 50 years), ood priceswill rise in 2013 above the averagein lation o 2.5 percent to 3 percentthats taken place in 2012. It takesseveral months or that type o disasterto impact ood prices. It says that or2013, in lation should be above thehistorical average or ood categoriessuch as cereals and bakery products, aswell as other oods.

he experts dont shop at my grocery store. What they apparently havent seen is that store prices already are rising ... quickly.

And thats not all. Medical carehas gone up 4 percent this year. Gasor the car rose 6 percent. Rents andutilities also have risen.

Meanwhile theres the coming risein Medicare Part B. hat cost comesout o your Social Security check be ore you even get it. Its estimatedthat the additional cost each monthwill be in the $7 range -- one-third o the Social Security adjustment.

When you run all the numbers,I think were already spending ouraverage $20.91 increase.

How Will You Spend Your $20.91?Look away or just a second.

hats the moment when you getknocked down. hrow a jab, when youshould have thrown a hook. hats themoment when you get knocked down.In the boxing ring, take your attentiono your opponent, or even a splitsecond, and youll get knocked down.he same thing is true or achievingany goal, especially those related tohealth and weight loss. ake youreyes o the prize and prepare to getknocked down.

First, you have to know exactly what your goal is. What is that prizeyou are striving or? I you arent clearon an exact goal or outcome, thenyou may as well quit be ore you evenbegin. Without that per ect image o what you want and how youre goingto get it, youll ind a much harder journey ahead. he simple truth is thatwe o ten get knocked down due to ourown distractions. he moment we takeour eyes o our goal is the moment weall o track.

Be ore you even embark on a journey o healthy changes, set yoursel up or success by sitting down andwriting your goals in a clear ormat. You must make them S.M.A.R. .,which means they are speci ic goalsthat are measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely. Create a clearpicture o the who, what, where, when, why, and how o your goal. Ask yoursel i its realistic and relevant.Make sure that your goal is importantto you, and that you can measure italong the way. Ask yoursel what youcan do, today, to help you achievethat goal. What can you do tomorrow, this week, this month, and this year?Making your goals SMAR will giveyou a clear plan to ollow, and motivateyou to get back on track when you doall o .

Once your goal is visibly outlined, you need to create your contingency plan. What happens when li e getsin the way? Maybe youre trying toquit smoking, and someone o ersyou a tempting cigarette, or youreeliminating soda rom your diet, andyou ind yoursel looking at a case o cola in the re rigerator. You have toknow, ahead o time, what you will

do in those situations, as well as how to avoid them in the uture. Betteryet, you need to know what you willdo i the temptations win. Are yougoing to beat yoursel up and quit? Orare you going to try harder the nexttime? emptations are just distractionsdesigned to knock us down.

he most liberating news aboutgetting knocked down or alling o track, is that you can simply decideto get back up and back on track. One reason many olks ail at theirhealthy behavior changes, is that they get knocked down too o ten, losingmotivation, drive, and sel -e icacy each and every time. All o us all o track. All o us get knocked down.he key is to get back on track morequickly and easily each time, withoutbeating yoursel up. You must havea contingency plan or when you getknocked down. Say, or example, thatyoure trying to lose weight and you just ate a horribly unhealthy meal.hat doesnt mean you cant eat healthy the next day. You havent blown itto the point that theres no reason topick yoursel up and try harder nexttime. Each time a temptation wins, become quicker to recognize it andquicker to get back on track toward thegoal. Have many contingency plans, not just one. Like a boxer, you mustbe malleable and able to change assituations change. Having more thanone plan will help you to ind successwhen li e gets in the way.

Im sure this isnt news to anyone, but no matter how many times you alldown, you must get back up and try again. Its been said or generations. Noone ever succeeded without alling o track one or one hundred times. hink o getting knocked down as a lesson onwhat not to do next time.

When you set yoursel up orsuccess by having clear, smart goals, and a contingency plan (or three),you then take control and ownershipo your success. Hold yoursel accountable or getting knocked down, then get on up, get your eyes back onyour prize, and move orward, so youcan knock down your goals!

I am not much o an optimist. Ireally try to be, and i you know mewell, I like to laugh and make otherslaugh. However, when it comes tobeing positive - as when people alwayssay Look on the bright side - thatswhere I run into trouble. Im sarcasticby nature; I come by it honestly, as my ather was the king o sarcasm, andeven i I had tried to ight it, I think itwas a oregone conclusion. Optimism

has been on my mind lately, as it seemsthat everything around us tends towardthe bleak.

Im sick o the utter negativity surrounding the presidential election.I know we have about one week be orethats decided, but my pessimism tellsme the negativity wont go away. Itslike when I lived in Philadelphia, Pa.,and the Eagles went to the Super Bowl.I knew whether they won or lost, therewould be riots downtown, which iswhy I enjoyed that game rom thecom ort o my suburban apartment. No matter who ends up being the

leader o our nation in January, its notlike snapping your ingers or lipping aswitch.

Are gas prices miraculously going to go down to $2 per gallon? Is unemployment going to magically disappear? Will the world love usagain? he answer to these questions isalmost assuredly no. I really watchedthe inal presidential debate andwas struck, again, by their completeinability to simply answer a questionin a way that makes sense. I, more thananyone, actually had a great deal o optimism when Obama took o ice in

2008. I cried at his acceptance speech.

I thought we inally had a leaderwho cared and wanted to do goodwork or all the people, not just themillion-dollar donors and lobbyists.hats what optimism gets you:disappointment.

In the meantime, our other optionis a person who has no idea whatbeing a regular person is and insultedhal o the country, including me. Ihad to get student loans, yes, because

college is impossible to a ord, and i you want a good job, you have to havea college degree. However, you now have the added bonus o possessinga college degree, yet still earning lessthan someone who might come romRomneys background and happento know the right people. Its very discouraging, and decidedly more sowhen one o the people running or thehighest o ice in the land doesnt getthat.

So, you see, Im a pessimistbecause sometimes its too damnexhausting to be an optimist. Im

tired rom waiting or the AmericanDream while working alongside my husband to achieve it. Im tired romwatching my college-educated riendsstruggle to achieve it, and Im tiredrom knowing that the money wevepaid into the system while trying toind this dream might not be therewhen we need it. I would ordinarily say go vote, because its your civic duty, and its a privilege, and thats still true, but this year I say, sadly, that it doesntmake much o a di erence either way.

Let me give you the usualrecommendations made or control o hot ashes. Im pretty sure you must havetried them a er more than 20 years o putting up with ashes. Dress in layersso that outer garments can be shed at therst inkling o a hot ash. Tat can keepit rom becoming a ull-blown one. Keepice water on hand and drink it at the starto a ash. E exor and Lexapro, twoantidepressants, have met with successin suppressing hot ashes or somewomen. Here they are not used or theirantidepressant action. Its an exampleo medicines that have more than oneunction. Neurontin (gabapentin) is aseizure-control medicine that is also usedor control o hot ashes.

    How do you know?

I just stepped in a poodle!

Pity the poor French poodle, thebutt o so many jokes, through theyears. Tis breed has been a cheapshot or laughs, with their traditional rou- rou hairdo. Did you know thatall those silly looking pu s o ur weredesigned with unctionin mind? And, in spiteo its name, this dog isnot even French!

Te breedoriginated in Germany, where it was a working-class dog, used as awater retriever. Teiconic Poodle clip wasdesigned by huntersto help the dogs movemore easily throughthe water. Te tu s o hair le on the body aremeant to protect andinsulate vital organs and

joints which are susceptible to cold.

Somehow, poodles have gottenthe reputation as dull lap dogs; littlemore than a charming accessory orsilly old ladies. Nothing could bearther rom the truth. Poodles are

actually one o the smartest breeds.Tey are considered quite high inintelligence, second only to the BorderCollie.

One local poodle owner tellsthis story thatattests to her petsintelligence. Soona er her husbandle or work in themorning the womanbegan to make thebed. Her little Poodlewas under oot, and,

you guessed it, sheaccidentally steppedon his paw. Te dogyelped, but quickly recovered. No lastingdamage was done.

    All was ne,

until the husbandreturned eight hourslater. Ten the dog beganlimping, an obvious ploy or sympathy. Now thatssmart!

Poodles come inthree sizes. Tere areStandard - over 15 inchestall at the shoulder;Miniature - over 10 but under 15inches; and oy - 10 inches or under. So, there is a poodle that is just rightor people with big yards, or those withtiny apartments. Te smaller dogs aremore active than the larger ones o thisbreed. Tey come in many solid colors,as well. Some o these are white, black, apricot, or gray. Tis is one breedthat is less o en seen in parti-color, aspotted color pattern.

Te Standard variety is the oldesto the three varieties. Te Miniature variety may have been used or trufehunting. Te oy Poodle was o enused in per ormances and circuses.(American Kennel Club) All three sizesexcel in obedience training.

An internet search will revealmany breeders anxious to sell youone o these delight ul companions.Prices range rom around $300-$1,500, with an average o about $600.However, like any breed that you may be interested in, check with your localshelter, or a rescue organization. Oneo the beauti ul things about a rescuedog is that they are usually already housebroken and are over the puppy-stage o chewing everything in sight.

So, do consider a Poodle as aurry riend, but prepare yoursel or along list o corny jokes. Here is just onemore:

    Perry Compelling In Alex Cross

By Van Robertsaking yler Perry seriously in

he role o the orensic psychologisthat Morgan Freeman originated in theoutine thriller Kiss the Girls (1997)

and reprised in Along Came A Spider(2001) may challenge the actors ans

ho cannot envisage him without a wigand a dress.

Aside rom his most recent Madeacomedy, Madeas Witness Protection,

Perry has been testing the watersor such a move. He made a cameoappearance in the Star rek ranchiseeboot, and he played it straight inis own epic Good Deeds. Goodeeds wasnt the standard-issue,

Perry potboiler. Religious themesand comedic tropes were conspicuousy their absence in this entertainingelodrama.

Alex Cross (*** out o ****)epresents Perrys boldest move to

alter his image. Actually, the New

Orleans native doesnt appear as outo place as an action hero as many o is ans and critics proclaim. Helmedy Rob Cohen, who directed Te

Fast and the Furious, xXx, and Teummy: omb o the Dragon, Alex

Cross quali es as a gritty, ast-paced,o-holds-barred, above-average policerocedural with the title character

committing criminal acts to thwart asadistic assassin. Basically, when hesnt channeling Sherlock Holmes withis shrewd insights into the behavior

o others, Perry strives to be like Dirty Harry Callahan. Indeed, our gun-oting hero breaks the very laws that heas sworn to uphold so he can nab aicious sociopath who craves to in ictain. Youve got to give Perry creditor having the nerve to make such an

outlandish change in his cinematicmodus operandi.

A dastardly contract killer whocalls himsel the Butcher o Sligo(Matthew Fox o Vantage Point)enjoys torturing the victims when heis neither shooting nor blasting themto smithereens. Motor City DetectiveDr. Alex Cross ( yler Perry), his long-time riend & colleague Detective

ommy Kane (Edward Burns o SavingPrivate Ryan) and Detective MonicaAshe (Rachel Nichols o Conan theBarbarian) set out to apprehend thiselon a er he kills a wealthy woman,Fan Yau (Stephanie Jacobsen), and gunsdown three bodyguards. Tis reprobateshears o most o Fan Yaus ngersbe ore he extracts the in ormation romher that he needs about his primary target. Te Butcher o Sligo sets hissights on an afuent Frenchman, LeonMercier (Jean Reno o Armored), whodreams about revitalizing Detroit. Cross

admits that they are contending with anexpert who has already gured out every move that the authorities will make tocatch him.

When Cross and company con ront the Butcher initially ina high-rise where the villain hastargeted white-collar types, the policeprove they arent the usual doughnutmunchers. Although the cunning killereludes the police, Kane draws bloodwhen one o his bullets nicks the badguy in the shoulder. Un ortunately, the authorities cannot make a positiveidenti cation because this bad manhas no criminal record. Later, Crossdiscovers that not even the man whohired the killer can identi y him. A erthey nd charcoal sketches that the

killer plants at the crime scene, thecops nickname him Picasso. Cross issurprised when this homicidal maniacgoes a er his unit and himsel . One o the biggest surprises occurs when thekiller botches an attempt on Cross, butnot be ore he ices somebody close to ourhero.

Along Came A Spider scenaristsMarc Moss and reshman scribe

Kerry Williamson have adapted JamesPattersons twel h novel and shun many o the usual cop movie clichs. Hal o what makes Alex Cross soentertaining is the casting o Perry asan action hero. He delivers a believable, compelling per ormance as a toughDetroit detective pitted against a ruthlessassassin. Director Rob Cohen handlesthe cat-and-mouse antics between thehero and the villain with verve.

While Perry acquits himsel well in the role, Matthew Fox steals

the show as a scary killer who toolsaround in a Cadillac. Reportedly, theormer Lost V star dropped about40 pounds to make himsel look notonly emaciated but also callous. In oneamusing scene, as Picasso, the villainkills three innocent bystanders who try to bully him. Cohen stages a terri cclose-quarters ght between Cross andthe villain in the ra ers o the decrepitMichigan Teater. Compared withthe two earlier Freeman movies, Kissthe Girls and Along Came a Spider,Alex Cross emerges as a superiorsaga. Nevertheless, Perry isnt hal the actor that Morgan Freeman is, butthis new ranchise may allow Perry todisplay his serious side as an actor.

He didnt disappoint in his irstcontest, snagging 10 balls or 250 yards

    Strong built o o the irst game,amassing 37 catches, 878 yards and

12 touchdowns in six games, andleading the Cali ornia Community College Athletic Association with 146.3receiving yards per game.

John Farley, BulldawgJunctionPublisher, shared his thoughts onStrongs rising status: Strong is aPhiladelphia kid that has gotten a lotmore attention since he has been atJuco than he did out o high school. He only had a VMI o er out o highschool, but now has several big timeschools looking at him. He reminds mesome o Cordarrelle Patterson with hisskill set. He will be a big addition toany school he attends.

    Strong says ive schools: Oregon

State, Mississippi State, Arizona State, ennessee and Nebraska are recruitinghim the hardest. He isnt planninga decision anytime soon. hehesitation may be due to the con usionsurrounding his classi ication. Rightnow, he is classi ied as a class o 2013

prospect, but he may have to return oranother year at Pierce.

he our-star prospect (24/7Sports rating) doesnt claim to havea avorite, but he does pre er onecon erence, stating, Im trying to play

SEC ball. SEC is the next step until theNFL.

Strong is regarded as theconsummate team guy, but most

big-time receivers have to be alittle sel ish on the ield. he 64,205-pound receiver discussed how he turns the switch on, when heis on the gridiron: I want to doeverything well. I know i its arun play, I want to get my man outo the play; so, what Im doing istrying to block him, says Strong.

I its a pass play, I know its apossibility Im going to catch the balland score a touchdown.

    I just love ootball, all-around,

so i someone drops a pass, Im tellingthem to pick their head up; get it thenext play. I you love the game o ootball, you cant be sel ish.

Strong does bring a bit o lair tothe game - sometimes dancing a ter

touchdowns. Strong says, I just liketo be com ortable; i Im com ortable,I get the swag going. hat should beok with the coach. Sometimes a coachmay not be cool with it; so, I mightbring it down a notch.

he electric receiver, obviously, will bring a lot to any team that signshim, but he will come rom a di erentculture than most o his teammates.Instead o being concerned about apotential culture clash, its somethingthat he looks orward to experiencing.I kind o look orward to stu like

that. In Philly, everyone is pretty muchthe same. So, when I go out to the WestCoast, I meet people with a di erenttype o swag. I get to learn that andtake it with me, Strong said.

Assistant Coaches Are Key To Ole Miss ImprovementBy Allen Baswell

Perhaps it was the late legendary Alabama ootball coach Paul BearBryant who once said that in orderto have success, you must surroundyoursel with good people.

Not only does it mean goodplayers, it means good coaches aswell. When he was named Ole MissHead Football Coach, Hugh Freezetook that adage to heart when hebegan assembling his coaching sta .

When Freeze set out to hirea sta , he wanted men who hadknowledge, along with experience.hat was no more evident than whenhe hired his o ensive and de ensivecoordinators.

o run the o ense, Freeze hiredlong-time college coach Dan Werner.his is the second time that Wernerhas coached at Ole Miss. In act, heand Freeze served on then-HeadCoach Ed Orgerons sta during the2006 and 2007 seasons. Werner waso ensive coordinator, and Freeze waswide receivers coach and recruitingcoordinator.

In all, Werner has over 28 yearso coaching experience. Wernerstutelage has been bene icial notonly to sophomore quarterback BoWallace, but to the unit as a whole.

Wallace is currently sixth inthe Southeastern Con erence intotal o ense, averaging 228 yards

per contest. As a unit, the Rebelso ense is sixth in the con erenceand 41 st in the national in passinge iciency.

Ole Miss has averaged over 400yards o total o ense in all gamesplayed to date, and has amassedover 300 yards rushing in twogames, those coming against ulaneand the University o exas-El Paso.

he season is about hal way complete, yet Ole Miss has already surpassed not only the total numbero wins rom last year, they havealready scored more points andtouchdowns than the 2011 team.hat is another indication o how much Werner has contributed tothe early success Freeze and theRebels have enjoyed.

In order or an o ense tohave any success, it starts with theo ensive line. Under the instructiono O ensive Line Coach Matt Luke,an Ole Miss graduate, the improvedplay o the o ensive line has helpedthe Ole Miss o ense rack up solidnumbers, as well as wins. Lukes linehas contributed to Ole Miss runningbacks averaging 211 yards rushingper game, which is 21 st in the nation, and ourth in the SEC.

It takes more than o ense to winootball games, though - especially

in the rough-and-tumble leaguethat is the Southeastern Con erence.De ense plays a huge role in a teamssuccess or ailure. When Freezeassembled his de ensive sta , he

went with people that he knew had asmuch experience and knowledge asthe o ensive coaches.

CoDe ensive CoordinatorDave Wommack served in the samecapacity or Freeze last year atArkansas State. Wommack possessesover 30 years o experience coachingin the collegiate ranks, includingstops at Arkansas, South Carolinaand Southern Mississippi. Heworks primarily with the de ensiveback ield, with the sa eties being hisspecialty.

Serving as Co-De ensiveCoordinator is Wesley McGri ,who also coaches the cornerbacks.McGri came to Ole Miss a ter astint at Vanderbilt, which went to abowl game in 2011, during his tenurethere.

wo o their pupils, sophomorede ensive back Cody Prewitt and junior de ensive back DehendretCollins are tied or i th in thecon erence in interceptions.

As a unit, the Rebel de endershave also put up some good numbers,as they held two teams - ulane andU EP - to under 50 yards rushingeach. A redshirt reshman, DenzelNkemdiche, is tied or third in thecon erence and 31 st nationally with1.29 tackles or loss per game. His 2.0tackles or loss per game against SECoes ranks him second among league

    players.

Another stat that illustratesthat improvement has been made on

the de ensive side is that Ole Miss isourth among SEC teams with 2.71

quarterback sacks a game, which alsoties them or 21 st in the country.

In their 30-27 loss to exasA&M, the de ense orced a season-high six turnovers - our umbles andtwo interceptions - against a teamthat only registered one turnover inits previous our games.

In their 33-14 loss to top-ranked Alabama, the Rebels heldthe Crimson ide to a season-low in points scored, as well as 305 totalyards o o ense, including 180 yardspassing.

    22 October 31, 2012 a weekly publication

When one hears the words rollerderby, a variety o images some, possibly, o a negative nature may come to mind.

Perhaps one image could be o women on roller skates per ormingviolent acts during a bout on the rink, which causes bodies to become bloody, bruised and battered.

hat is not the image the sportconveys today, especially with theGolden riangle areas only roller derby team, the Mississippi Brawl Stars.

Shannon Haupt, a member o theBrawl Stars or three years, said thatthis sport is a contact sport, but de iesthe image that has been portrayed inmovies.

It is a contact sport, but not whatsome people may think it is. I see it as agreat stress reliever, she said.

Junauh Allgood, another membero the Brawl Stars, said that when sheis on the rink, whether in competitionor just practicing, she can put aside any and all things that are on her mind, including classes and other obligations.

It is therapy on wheels or me.

Very ew womenssports are non-contact, and rollerderby has contact, but it is also amental game, shesaid.

Allgood, whois a nursing studentat East MississippiCommunity College, said thatbeing on the rink has allowed her tobecome much moreo an athlete.

I was not an athletic personwhen I irst started getting interested inroller derby, so I made mysel becomemore athletic, she said.

Haupt said that being a membero the Brawl Stars isnt a regular job, just something the ladies do or un.She said it is a non-pro it group, andthat they have to provide their ownequipment and uni orms.

It costs us around $300-$500 orour equipment and out its. We holdund raisers during hanksgiving andChristmas to help us out, she said.

he out its include knee andelbow pads, with some wearing paddedshorts as a way to help prevent seriousinjuries.

You can break your tailbone, so itis important to wear padded shorts. Wealso wear helmets.

Along with the skates and theuni orms, the ladies also wear ishnetstockings. Allgood said that whilesome people may think they are tryingto be sexy, the stockings are or apractical use. It helps them to slideeasier when they take a tumble.

Haupt said that the average age orwomen on a roller derby team is rom18 to the 50s.

You have to be 18 to start. I haveknown o some women in their 50sand 60s who are on roller derby teams, she said.

Some sporting events are calledgames - like ootball, basketball, orbaseball. In womens roller derby, theyre called bouts. he MississippiBrawl Stars average at least eight boutsa year against teams rom Louisiana,Alabama, ennessee and surroundingstates.

Allgood said they usually haveone bout per month. hat is due inpart to economics and travel, but alsoor health reasons. hey also want tomake sure they can have some time tobe with their amilies.

It takes time to recover rom thebumps and bruises, and other injuriesteam members get. So we cant do likeother sports, having bouts every week, she said.

he Brawl Stars wrapped uptheir season at home at the ColumbusFairgrounds against the NorthshoreLethal Ladies, a team based inCovington, La. he Brawl Stars wonthe bout 101-89.

he Brawl Stars also take timeto participate in special eventsor businesses throughout areacommunities. It gives them a chanceto create awareness that a local rollerderby team exists.

Each player comes up with theirown nickname that is on the back o their jersey, Allgood said. Haupt callshersel Shannaconda, which shedescribes as a play on words combiningher name and her ear o snakes.

I use it as an alter ego when Imon the rink. I take something Im a raido , which is snakes, and I turn it intomy strength, she said.

Allgood calls hersel Sadie Word21. It was something that she came upwith that best its her, she said.

Allgood said the thing she enjoysabout being a part o the MississippiBrawl Stars is the chance to make new riends.

I also like the psychologicalpart o being in roller derby, and

    communicating with teammates, shesaid.

here are a wide variety o womenwho take part in roller derby, Hauptsaid.

We have teachers, businessowners, housewives. We have womenrom a broad range o socio-economicbackgrounds.
