The Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Friends of Jesus,

Today’s readings emphasize the wonderful things that are in store for us if we have faith in our loving Crea-tor. In the first reading, Naaman, a pagan leader, obeyed the prophet Elisha’s directive to wash in the Jordan. Not entirely sure of why he had to do this not once but seven times, he went ahead and did just that. Because of his faith his leprosy was cured and he became a firm believer in the God of Abraham. To go from non be-lief to belief in the hope that the God of Abraham would help him made Naaman very generous towards El-isha. He declined a gift he had no right to take and that only made Naaman’s faith stronger.

In the second reading we see Timothy suffering imprisonment for his preaching. Rather than complain about his lot, however, he sees his own suffering as a way to ensure the salvation of his disciples so he embraces it because he believes they and himself will reap their salvation so long as they do not deny Christ. This read-ing ends with a statement about the unconditional generosity of Jesus who will always welcome us back whenever we slip away from Him.

Then we have the Gospel message which emphasizes Christ’s total generosity even when we do not recipro-cate it. Of the ten lepers he cures, only one, returns to express his gratitude. And that one is a Samaritan, the most despised of people to the Jews. Notice Jesus, though he expresses disappointment that the others did not return to thank Him, He does not condemn them. Still, He tells the foreigner that his faith has saved him.

For us Americans born into a free society it is easy to take our faith for granted. But elsewhere that is not al-ways the case. On a recent trip to the Baltic States and Russia I saw many incidences of hardship for their faith that people endured under both Nazi and Communist oppression. Among some of the more graphic in-stances was the arrest, torture and murder of the archbishop of Vilnius, Lithuania, a country where 82% of the people claim Catholicism as their faith. Then in Latvia there is a hill that contains more than a hundred thousand crosses put there by the faithful. After driving the Nazis out of this country, the Soviets destroyed this shrine that had existed since the sixteenth century. They even posted guards around the site to prevent people from visiting it. Despite these guards, however, people would sneak in at night and plant more crosses so the authorities gave up. Now this Hill of Crosses is a major tourist attraction.

Finally, in St. Petersburg, Russia there is Saint Catherine of Alexandria’s cathedral on the main street. It does not compare with the grandeur of the ornate Russian Orthodox churches but in it simplicity shows us how our faith has survived. As you enter the building on your left is what must have been a side chapel. All that is left is a desecrated altar, partially destroyed by sledge hammers and a big empty hole on the wall behind it that must have contained a crucifix or icon of some sort. Daily Mass is said in another chapel. Though I could not understand the language, I knew what was happening. It made me very humble and grateful both for my faith and the freedom to practice it that we Americans enjoy. So today let us thank God as Naaman, Timothy and the Samaritan did, and act accordingly towards one another. God bless.

Deacon Brian

Our school’s theme this year is ‘Saints of Service’. Each Wednesday at Morn-

ing Prayer, our students are recognizing a saint through a prayer, play, song or presentation. We are con-tinuing with our year long recognition of the saints with the fifth grade performing a tribute to Saint Francis of Assisi by singing ‘Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace’. Our 8th grade students will be learning about saints and presenting short skits featuring those saints for the whole school.

PEACEMAKERS Feast Day October 11

Even though he was 77 when he was elected Pope, John XXIII exuded an enthusiasm for life, as would a younger man. Within a short time upon his election he called the Second Vatican Council into being, hoping to “open the windows” of the Church and let in some fresh air. The Council was a sign of extraordinary renewal in the Church – a positive dialogue be-tween the Church and the modern world.

Pope John came to represent peace as he authored Pacem in Terris, the encyclical on peace as well as living his life as an example of how to be a peaceful person. He hoped for peace in every heart – “every believer must be a spark of light and a center of love.” In the arms race, “true and solid peace of na-tions consists not in equality of arms but in mutual trust alone.”

How can we bring a “spark of light and a center of love” to this world?

THE GRATEFUL GARMENT PROJECT When a victim of sexual assault enters a SART (Sexual Assault Re-sponse Team) facility for an examination, they are often required to surrender their clothing for forensic evidence. This can leave victims with nothing to wear home but a paper hospital gown. T.G.G.P. pro-vides NEW clothing, grooming items and snacks to victims of sexual assault of all ages. Queen of Apostles is hosting a clothing drive to assist TGGP. Outside of church there are bins for your donations of NEW clothing, grooming items and snacks. Don’t feel like shopping? Financial contributions allow purchases of clothing in bulk at whole-sale prices; this makes each dollar go farther. Please make your tax-deductible donation payable to: The Grateful Garment Project. On the table outside you will find brochures about TGGP and a list of what items of clothing are needed. Donations will be accepted at all services on the weekends of Oct. 1 & 2; Oct 8 and 9; and Oct. 15 and 16. Please be generous in helping TGGP return dignity to victims of sexual as-sault!!!
