To commemorate the centenaryof the outbreak of the First WorldWar, the Octagon presents one ofthe greatest war plays everwritten: Journey’s End.
Excited by the prospect ofadventure and inspired by adetermination to serve hiscountry, eighteen-year-oldSecond Lieutenant Raleigh hasarrived in the trenches. He isthrilled to find himself under thecommand of Captain Stanhope -his boyhood hero and a closefamily friend. But after three yearscommanding his companyStanhope is a changed man.
The futility of warfare, constantfear, and the death of so manyclose comrades have driven himto whisky to help him endure thedaily horrors. Raleigh’s arrival onlyserves to remind him of a life thatis now long gone – a life when hewas young, with hope, a future, and in love.
Based on RC Sherriff’s ownexperience of the First World War,Journey’s End is written with theauthenticity and compassion of asoldier who was intimatelyacquainted with the nightmare of life in the trenches, and theextraordinary courage of thosewho fought there.

Continuing the Octagon’s commemoration of theanniversary of the outbreak of the First World War,Early One Morning tells the true story of 26-year-oldsoldier James Smith from Bolton.
Flanders, August 21st 1917. British forces advancingtowards Passchendaele are struggling through drivingrain and mud. The fighting is fierce and bloody. Eachday thousands are killed, wounded or lost to oblivion. Two miles behind the front line a Field General CourtMartial begins. Private James Smith of the King’sLiverpool Regiment is charged with desertion.
This is the moving and compelling story of a Boltonsoldier, who for three years has been fighting in someof the fiercest battles of the First World War. He hasbeen wounded, received two Good Conduct Medals, and been promoted. He is now on trial for his life.
Over 300 British soldiers were shot at dawn during theFirst World War. In 2006 they were granted a pardonthat recognised them to be as much victims of war asthe soldiers who died in battle. And at last, 92 yearsafter his death, Private James Smith’s name wasentered in Bolton’s Roll of Honour of soldiers who diedin the Great War.
Early One Morning was commissioned and firstproduced by the Octagon in 1998. It is written byBolton playwright Les Smith, who was co-writer of thehugely popular Bolton Wanderers play And Did ThoseFeet, last produced at the Octagon in 2010.

Following the success of Hobson's Choice, theOctagon presents another famous, great Northernplay: Hindle Wakes.
It's the end of the Wakes weekend in the fictitiousmill town of Hindle in Lancashire, just before theoutbreak of the First World War. Mill worker FannyHawthorn and mill owner’s son Alan Jeffcote arereturning home after a weekend alone together in aLlandudno hotel - kept secret from their parents, and from Alan's fiancée Beatrice.
But when a dramatic turn of events exposes theirdeception they find themselves in conflict with bothsets of parents. Faced with the pressure to ‘becomean honest woman’ Fanny is determined to pursueher own future.
Like Hobson’s Choice, Hindle Wakes is funny, compelling and extraordinarily authentic in itsdepiction of Lancashire life at the time. One of thefirst plays to have a working class female centralcharacter, it was considered to be hugelycontroversial when first performed, championingthe role of women as they embarked on a new eraof independence and freedom.

Age must come to us all.
But what if there really was a path back to youth? Would you take it?
One night, three old friends who have known each other for forty yearsdiscover an ancient book that offers up the secret of youth. Within itsdusty pages the book reveals a series of rituals, that if followed sincerely -and with absolute diligence - promise nothing less than to turn back theclock and give them youth once again.
They take the challenge.

It’s less than twenty-four hours before opening night. Dotty’s lost her sardines,Selsdon’s drunk, Frederick’s about to have yet another nosebleed, and Tim’s on thebrink of collapse. In the words of harassed Director Lloyd: ‘That’s farce. That’s thetheatre. That’s life.’
Revealing the backstage shenanigans of a theatre company in the throes of‘putting on a show’, Noises Off is a riotous comedy following the cast and crew asthey tour their cheeky farce ‘Nothing On’. Battling against all the odds they’redesperately trying to make sure that, whatever happens, the show must go on!
Noises Off received Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Comedy, playingin both the West End and Broadway. First produced in London in 1982, it wasnominated for a Tony Award for Best Play in 1983, and adapted for the silver screenin the 1992 film version starring Michael Caine.
“In these dark, anxious times,Noises Off offers an infallibleescape into happiness.” The Telegraph
“There has never been a morebrilliantly conceived machinefor generating helplessaudience laughter thanMichael Frayn's 1982 classic Noises Off.” The Independent
