Designer Willy Poppe has dedicated his life toinnovation within the field of sleep. He began with asimple mission for Octaspring, ‘to create the world’smost comfortable mattress without compromising onquality, support or the environment’. This was simple tosay, yet hard to achieve.
For more than a century, spring mattresses haveproven to be satisfactory, but modern technology hashighlighted the limited adaptability and flexibility ofthese mattresses, as well as problems of deteriorationover time. Memory foam, invented when man firstwent to the moon over 25 years ago, eliminatespressure points but the dense foam restricts airflowmaking the body hot and humid, disrupting a restfulnight’s sleep.
To resolve these issues, Poppe designed therevolutionary and innovative Octaspring eight-sidedhoneycomb design. Evolving from the traditionalmetal spring bed, Octaspring takes the best that steelspring technology can offer and combines it with thebest of memory foam technology. This works inexactly the opposite way to metal springs. Where metal springs push up, resisting the force that isapplied to them, each Octaspring accepts the force,conforming to and cradling the body. It is comfortwithout compromise.
Octaspring technology provides localised adaptabilityand different levels of support to the body where itneeds it, encouraging optimal circulation around thebody and a comfortable sleeping position. It allowsmovement in all directions while giving support,comfort and ventilation. The mattresses consist ofsingle or multiple layers of Octasprings, each withinnovative 3D air-mesh sides. Body movementsnaturally release the hot and humid air that getstrapped inside the mattress, letting in fresh air andgiving the whole mattress that ‘clean sheets’ feeling.
