TODAY’S WORSHIP FOCUS

Next to the attachment to hearth and home, a person’s

chief attachment is to his purse. So it is not out of order to

consider what God has to say about his gifts of wealth and

to let God’s Word put those gifts in a proper context for us.

WISCONSIN EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN SYNOD

I rejoiced with those who said to me,

“Let us go to the house of the LORD.”

Psalm 122:1

INVOCATION AND GREETING

Minister: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the

Holy Spirit.

Congregation: Amen.

M: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the

fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

C: And also with you.

CONFESSION OF SINS

M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love

and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him

and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us

confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth.

In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not

deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my

Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing

love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect

life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed

your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you

strength to live according to his will.

C: Amen.

M: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

Worship begins

with a reminder

of the Triune

God’s grace. He

washed us in

baptism — the

Invocation uses

the words of

Baptism — and

continues to

work for our

eternal salvation.

Confession and

Absolution are a

significant and

powerful part of

a worship

service. By faith,

you can hear

God’s voice

speaking words

of forgiveness.

This forgiveness

renews and

strengthens us to

live as God’s

people.

5

The refrain at

the beginning

and end of this

song is from

Psalm 34:8. We

have just heard

that our sins are

forgiven; truly the

Lord is good! The

middle portion of

the song is from

Psalm 119:89-

90. God’s

faithfulness

continues as his

Word continues

to bless and

preserve his

children.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M: Grant, O merciful Lord, to your faithful people pardon and peace

that they may be cleansed from all their sins and serve you with a

quiet mind; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and

reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

FIRST LESSON 2 Kings 5:14-27

So [Naaman] went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven

times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and

became clean like that of a young boy.

Then Naaman and all his attendants went back to the man of

God. He stood before him and said, “Now I know that there is no God

in all the world except in Israel. So please accept now a gift from your

servant.”

The prophet answered, “As surely as the Lord lives, whom I serve, I

will not accept a thing.” And even though Naaman urged him, he

refused.

“If you will not,” said Naaman, “please let me, your servant, be

given as much earth as a pair of mules can carry, for your servant will

never again make burnt offerings and sacrifices to any other god but

the Lord. But may the Lord forgive your servant for this one thing:

When my master enters the temple of Rimmon to bow down and he

is leaning on my arm and I bow there also—when I bow down in the

temple of Rimmon, may the Lord forgive your servant for this.”

Elijah did not

want to give any

impression that

God’s goodness

could be

purchased with

earthly money.

But sadly, Gehazi

saw an

opportunity to

benefit himself.

8

“Go in peace,” Elisha said.

After Naaman had traveled some distance, Gehazi, the servant of

Elisha the man of God, said to himself, “My master was too easy on

Naaman, this Aramean, by not accepting from him what he brought.

As surely as the Lord lives, I will run after him and get something from

him.”

So Gehazi hurried after Naaman. When Naaman saw him running

toward him, he got down from the chariot to meet him. “Is everything

all right?” he asked.

“Everything is all right,” Gehazi answered. “My master sent me to

say, ‘Two young men from the company of the prophets have just

come to me from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a

talent of silver and two sets of clothing.’”

“By all means, take two talents,” said Naaman. He urged Gehazi to

accept them, and then tied up the two talents of silver in two bags,

with two sets of clothing. He gave them to two of his servants, and

they carried them ahead of Gehazi. When Gehazi came to the hill, he

took the things from the servants and put them away in the house. He

sent the men away and they left. Then he went in and stood before

his master, Elisha.

“Where have you been, Gehazi?” Elisha asked

“Your servant didn’t go anywhere,” Gehazi answered.

But Elisha said to him, “Was not my spirit with you when the man

got down from his chariot to meet you? Is this the time to take money

or to accept clothes, olive groves, vineyards, flocks, herds, or

menservants and maidservants? Naaman’s leprosy will cling to you

and to your descendants forever.” Then Gehazi went from Elisha’s

presence and his skin was leprous, as white as snow.

SONG

10

This Lesson bids

us trust in the

mercy of God

and in his

abiding presence

in his Word. This

keeps our

priorities where

they ought to be:

first on him and

his Word and

then on willing

obedience to

God’s will.

SECOND LESSON Hebrews 13:1-6

Keep on loving one each other as brothers. Do not forget to

entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained

angels without knowing it. Remember those in prison as if you were

their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you

yourselves were suffering.

Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept

pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually

immoral. Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content

with what you have, because God has said,

“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

So we say with confidence,

“The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.

What can mere mortals do to me?”

GOSPEL LESSON Mark 10:17-27

As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his

knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit

eternal life?”

“Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—

except God alone. You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, do

not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not

defraud, honor your father and mother.’ ”

“Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.”

Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he

said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will

have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

12

At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had

great wealth.

Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for

the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”

The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said

again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is

easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich

man to enter the kingdom of God.”

The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other,

“Who then can be saved?”

Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but

not with God; all things are possible with God.”

M: This is the Gospel of the Lord.

APOSTLES’ CREED

C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and

earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was

conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was

buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again

from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the

right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will

come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the

communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection

of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who

trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Call Meeting Results—After the late service on Sunday, October 10, a divine

call was issued to Dorothy Grivno to become our 1st and 2

nd grade teacher

for the 2022-2023 school year. Mrs. Grivno is married and has 2 grade

school aged children. She currently teaches at Crown of Life in Hubertus.

Please keep the Grivno family in your prayers as she deliberates where she

best can serve her Lord.

Midweek Bible Class—Our Wednesday (1:00pm) and Thursday (7:00pm) Bible

Classes cover the same materials. Currently, we are studying the Smalcald

Articles which were written by Martin Luther and review a variety of

important teachings. They are a bit edgy. Luther did not pull any punches

about what he believed or the errors he saw. In that way they help us clarify

what the Bible teaches. If you are not already attending one of these classes,

give it a try. You will enjoy the study of God’s Word and you will grow in

your faith.

Cleaners Needed—Thank you to the people that volunteer to be on a cleaning

team but we need several more cleaners! Currently each team cleans once

every 14 weeks but several teams have lost members. If you can help or

want more information contact the church office at 414-774-1184 or email

[email protected].

Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society will hold their Fall Rally on October 23

Attention Electronic Givers—There is a new mobile app which is now available

called Vanco Mobile which can be used for managing your electronic

giving. It replaces the Give+ app which is being retired and will not be

usable after January 2022. Your account information and settings remain the

same. There is a sheet on the table in the Narthex for instructions on using

the new app (available in the Google Play and Apple App stores). If you

A man who has devoted himself to the wealth and honor of the
