Volume 19 OCTOBER, 1975 No. 10

NHPA President's Message CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE 1975 STATE CHAMPIONS IN ALL DIVISIONS. I

attended our state tournament in Stockton, Calif. The NCHPA was host and did an out-standing job in all categories. Stockton now has 19 beautiful lighted courts. I had the honor of saying a few words at the opening and closing ceremonies. I mentioned to the city officials, with 5 more courts, a world tournament could be held there. The city officals said to Stockton "you get the W.T. we will put in the 5 more courts." (Door is open NCHPA don't let it close.)

I have written thank you letters on behalf of the NHPA, to the Governor of Indiana, Mayor of Lafayette, Assistant Director of Lafayette Parks Board, President of Indiana Association, and President and Secretary Treasurer of Lafayette Club.

We had a very good Hall of Fame Committee meeting in Lafayette, with 10 out of the 14 members in attendence. In brief here are a few high lights:

1. After Lloyd Fredrickson completes the scrapbook the chairman will be responsible in keeping it up-dated.

2. Hall of Fame Plaque will be up-dated to show in brief the accomplishments in why the person was selected to the Hall of Fame.

3. We will get estimates of building an enclosed trailer that can be opened up on site showing our NHPA Hall of Fame Plaque with the scrapbook. Trailer will also have a built in lighting system.

4. NHPA will get the plaque insured. 5. Bernard's VIP plan will be sent to the Hall of Fame Committee, Regional Directors

and Executive council for approval and bring to the 1976 convention. Bob Graham is remaining on as Chairman of Regional Directors. Charles Killgore of

Missouri is replacing Earl Winston as Regional Director for Missouri and Kansas. Earl felt his many Horseshoe assignments did not allow him to do the job justice.

I had the pleasure of presenting Katie Gregson her NHPA Hall of Fame Plaque at the Gregson Doubles Tournament in San Bernardino, Calif. This tourney was named after her deceased husband Archie Gregson who is a charter member in the NHPA Hall of Fame. Katie's family and many SCHPA members were on hand for the presentation. She is in good health, looks great and said hello to all her NHPA friends and families.

My 1975 World Tournament expenses were as follows and approved by the council:

Plane Fare Round Trip $226.73 Meals, Food and Tips — 13 Days 125.89 Motel and Phone Calls — 12 Nights 171.26 Transportation to and from L.A. Airport Car Rental from Indianapolis, Plus Gas, Plus Parking and Laundry 9.75 Oil , Coolant - 13 Days 181.34

TOTAL $714.97

Sincerely,

Wally Shipley

Special Notice A full and complete story of the 1975 Hall of Fame inductees and Arch Stokes award winner will appear in the November issue. Also all State tournament results from around the country will be featured.

Henton In Magnificent Win Of Galesburg (III.)

Open Crown On Sunday August 10 there was an interesting contrast in the showdown

match of the Galesburg National Horseshoe Open at the Lincoln Park Courts. The veteran Glen (Red) Henton went against defending champion Larry

Griffin, who is relatively new to the sport. In the end, experience paid off as the 59-year old retired postal worker de-

feated Griffin 50-39 in the final game. Griffin, Paris, 111. nosed out Ray Martin, Philo, 111. in the National Open last

year and just a month previous this year the 27 year old pitcher edged Martin at the Lincoln Park courts again, that time for the 1975 Illinois state title.

Martin, whose only losses were to Griffin and Henton, finished third. Henton, who is one of four players to win the Galesburg tournament three

times in its 17 year history, had an impressive 84.7 ringer percentage for the tournament. He kept the pressure on Griffin in the final game with an 86.6 percentage. Henton's previous wins in the Galesburg tournament came in 1970 and 1972.

this year and finally strode to the winners circle by edging San Jose's Lloyd Potter 44-27 in a playoff on the Crane Park courts in Turlock. Tyson Victor In Rain-Shortened Mid-Atlant ic Open In a, RINGERS ONLY, tournament, Art Tyson, of Mt. Vernon, New York,

was tops in " A " Class as he showered the pegs with ringers. The type of scor-ing and play was a first in Jersey. Two points were counted for a ringer and contestants tossed at open stakes by using the qualifying type of pitching for-mat. Using the two point per ringer setup for 50 shoe games, makes the score and the ringer average synonymous. This makes this system extremely con-venient for score-keeping and score keeping devices.

Graham Wins Irene Andreas Open A t San Antonio. Texas Bob Graham of Houston, Texas went undefeated in ten tough contests to win

the Annual Irene Andreas Open Tournament held on the V.F.W. Post 4815 courts in San Antonio. He nudged out Rod Hatton who took second place while compil-ing a fine 68.5% despite high winds and rain. Jim Woodson of San Antonio took third with a 65.6% average. We were all quite pleased that Lee Davis came all the way from Florida to pitch, however the Texas boys were not as hospitable as they could have been since Lee managed only two wins but pitched well all day.

Bob Graham 10-0, 68.5%; Rod Hatton 8-2, 67.6%; Jim Woodson 6-4, 65.6%; Chester Zarnicki 2-8, 57.8%; Bob Emerson 2-8, 48.6%; Lee Davis 2-8, 48.5%.

AUTHORS CORNER The 1975 NHPA National Convention

By Jim Woodson of Texas Maybe I should never have gone. I always wanted to see an NHPA National

Convention because when you say it out loud, real slow, it sounds important and impressive.

I was disappointed. As hard as I try I can't figure out yet what happened at the 1975 version of the NHPA convention.

I sat for eight hours watching as a spectator how things went. When every-thing was finally over at two o'clock in the morning, it seemed to me not much was accomplished. It made me kind of sad.

I could be wrong. Maybe the meeting was a big success and many important things were done. I don't really have all that experience to understand how national conventions should work. This was the first one I ever watched, if you don't count those political things that come on TV every four years.

We had a good crowd at the start. The place for spectators was nice and packed, which showed that our people were interested in the business of the NHPA. That was good. But they didn't stay too long. That was bad. The first ones to leave walked out real quiet, kind of embarrassed, like they had a guilty conscience. Then others moved out, and a little later on almost all the rest. It was as if someone hollored 'Fire'. Maybe someone did!! All I know is, it got real lonely. It made me feel bad.

The trouble was, we spectators got confused early and had a hard time keep-ing up. At least I did. It seemed to me the State delegates spent most of the first three hours on by-law changes moving commas around and deciding where to drop periods. Some of the delegates got mad about this and that, and I got to wondering what would happen if a fight broke out and people started hitting one another; or they started tearing up their NHPA card in little pieces and threw them on the floor. I never did understand what the upset was about, ex-cept one time it had to do with $5.00 and junior pitchers. This didn't interest

Author's C o r n e r — (Continued) me too much since I had my own personal money problem. My wallet was get-ting thin, and I was working hard to keep my traveling expenses for the tourna-ment under $400.00.

I don't know still if the speakers on the program had anything important to say. I guess not. Because of the late hour most of the speakers cut things out and rushed their say as fast as they could. This was pretty smart of them because no one felt like listening anyway. If they did have something impor-tant, I guess it can wait till next time. After all, we have conventions all the time and the year will pass pretty quick.

It's too bad though that the delegates couldn't have spent more time on new business. I had the feeling more good ideas could have been looked at and worked on. But at one o'clock in the morning it's pretty hard to push for new things, much less sell them.

At least the convention ended on a good note. Everyone still awake seemed pleased that Greenville, Ohio will host the 1977 world tournament. And our president, Wally Shipley, got re-elected as did the other officers.

The next day I talked to people about our national convention. They all agreed — the coffee and donuts were real good.

"From Out Of The Mail Bag"

Horseshoe Pitchers News Digest Frazeysburg, Ohio P. 0. Box 1606 August 19, 1975 Aurora, Illinois Dear Mr. Cobb: I would like to take a few minutes and express a "newcomer's" view of horseshoes. I started pitching horseshoes in Jan. 1974 but did not play in a real tournament until July of 1975 this year. I knew nothing of the "open shoe" and thus I pitch a semi-flip. I met Mr. Don Findise of Zanesville, Ohio and really started to learn about the game of horseshoes. I tried to hold a tournament to raise money for bicycles for my boys (I run a group home for delinquent boys in Frazeysburg, Ohio). We had very little luck but I learned a lot about the game, especially from Don. Having been in sports all my life (I was on the U.S. Oljnnpic Soccer team in 1968) I was determined to learn more about the game. I finally won my first tournament in July of this past year at Moundsville, West Va. What a thrill for me, but the greater thrill came at the end of my championship match when all of my boys came running out of the bleachers and grabbed my hand. I realized then that I had found a new tool to fight delin-quency with. We have since built a set of pits here at the home and several of the boys are learning to "pitch". So thank you Mr. Horseshoes where ever you are!

Yours Truly, Gus Peterson

Horseshoe News Digest Box 1606 Aurora, Illinois Sir:

I have just heard the results of the World horseshoe Championships and all I can say — 'a truly great player won'. Congratulations to you the winner and all the other great players that competed.

I am very interested in the game of horseshoes as my son-in-law is a world championship contender and each year comes just a little closer to the top. I won't mention any names as I think the World Horseshoe Committee do a sensational job in this large and always successful annual endeavor, however along with the bouquet I just can't help but feel the Hall of Fame Committee could take a little more time in their decisions as to who is selected for this great honor. I'm wondering if the histories of many players and organizers are pigeon holed and are not reviewed each year. My son-in-law says no collusion exists in the voting and no one on the committee knows what or who he has in mind(only himself) when he casts his ballot. Don't you think that collusion would be a good thing—talk over who is up for selection as we all know that several minds are needed when 'real problems' confront us. I'm sorry I missed the event at LaFayette but our vacation trip across to California up the west coast into Canada, across Canada and back into the States at Michigan took longer than anticipated. I visited dozens of horseshoe clubs, some that have some many fine players and gentlemen. In Canada they are well organized in places but the one

M a i l b a g — C o n t i n u e d part that I felt had every one beat for organizational work was in the three prairie Provinces (and this includes the U.S.A.). From a hub leading out of a small City in Manitoba there is a man that has spent practically all his horse-shoe playing days (over 40 years) in serious organizational work. I stayed in this vicinity long enough and had several games of horseshoe on their up to date pitching courts to find out some facts and believe me the stories I heard about this man as I travelled through from west to east were fascinating but true. This is the kind of man that should have a chance as an 'organizer' when voting time rolls around. He has been no doubt one of the better players in Canada but has been content to help others in as many ways he can and no doubt will continue to do so. What I am trying to do is offer some constructive criticism as you know this really is a changing world.

As my letter is getting rather long I will bring it to a close and hope that some serious thoughts go into 'collusion or no collusion' when next year rolls around.

Yours truly, Tom D. Gauger
