TODAY IS WORLD MISSION SUNDAY! *October 20 – Theme: “BAPTIZED AND SENT”

Every year, on the next-to-last Sunday of October is World Mission Sunday. This special event joins all Catholics of the world into one community of faith. At Mass, we recommit ourselves to our common vocation, through baptism, to be missionaries, through prayer, participation in the Eucharist, and by giving generously to the collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

Pope Francis has set October 2019 as an Extraordinary Missionary Month to foster greater awareness of “missio ad gentes” and to animate the missionary transformation of Church life and pastoral activity. He has asked each country to highlight a great missionary who shared their life for the love of the Gospel. In the USA, chosen is Sister Dorothy Stang, SNDdeN, who was martyred in Brazil in 2005 because of her defense of indigenous people and the environment.

In his World Mission Sunday address, the Pope reminds us of our baptismal call to be sent forth to evangelize the world. This is the mission that all Christians have received, and God gives us the grace to live it out wherever we may be.

As we pray and respond on World Mission Sunday as baptized and sent, we provide the prayerful and financial support necessary to bring the Lord’s mercy and concrete help to the most vulnerable communities in the Pope’s missions.

The collection today ensures the work and services of the Mission Church, as it supports priests, religious and lay lead-ers who offer the Lord’s assistance in the mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands and parts of Latin America and Europe.. Thank you for your generosity.

HONORING THE VIRGIN MARY On October 13, Sunday, on the anniver-sary of the last of the series of appari-tions of the Lady of Fatima which began in May 13, 1917, OLM parishioners gath-ered in front of the church to pray the public rosary under the banner of the movement “America Needs Fatima.” There was no phenomenon of the danc-ing sun but the devotees who prayed the holy rosary fervently felt the presence and blessing of the Virgin Mary. Let’s continue to pray the holy rosary daily whether individually, communally or as a family for “The family that prays the rosary together, stays in love and harmo-ny together.”

Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Pastor’s Corner By Rev. Fr. Edgar B. Brillantes

First Reading: Exodus 17:8-13 The lifting up of arms and hands om the air is an ancient gesture prayer, one that the priest still uses today at Mass. In our First Reading, Moses raises his hands in prayer, interceding with God for Israel’s success in battle. Today’s text teaches us to persevere and to support one another in prayer.

Second Reading: 2 Timothy 3:14-4:2 Earlier in this letter, Paul specifically names Timothy’s mother Eunice and grandmother Lois as his teachers. Paul encourages Timothy to be faith-ful to the Scriptures that he learned in his youth and to persevere in proclaiming and teaching the Word at all costs.

Gospel: Luke 18:1-8 What a comparison Jesus makes between the dishonest judge and God! We all know the feeling of being ready to do almost anything if it will mean someone will stop bothering us! How much more will God, who loves us, hear out prayers. The poit of the parable is given at the outset: persevere in prayer.

NEW CHALICES

The Ilocano Ministry of OLM donated new chalices for use in the liturgical celebrations. Fr. Edgar blessed them during the Ilocano Mass on September 15. He acknowledged the worthy initiative of the officers and mem-bers of the Ilocano group headed by Silverio Palting in producing the sacred items. They are evidence of the peoples’ love for the Lord Jesus in the Eucharist which is the summit and center of our Christian life.

STEWARDSHIP PRAYER

Gracious and Loving God,

We give you thanks for this time of year;

a time of transformation

that reveals the awe-inspiring gift of your creation.

Teach us how to be good stewards of all

the gifts you have given us;

and show us how we may share those gifts generously,

especially with those most in need of your loving care.

Give us the strength to be good stewards of the Gospel,

to love others as we love ourselves,

and to follow in your Son’s footsteps,

until we find our way home to you.

We pray this through your Son, Jesus Christ,

who lives and reigns with you

and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

Amen.

“The way you give to others is the way God will give to you.” Luke 6:38

CATHOLIC STEWARDSHIP: STEWARDS OF A MISSIONARY CHURCH Jesus said to his apostles, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15). The month of October is an ideal time to focus our prayers on the world and to reflect on how we might follow Christ’s call to proclaim his teachings to “the whole world.” The people

of the world are a gift from God and this global community is a gift to be received with gratitude and held in stewardship.

World Mission Sunday is celebrated this year on October 20 and the entire month of October offers Catholics world-wide the opportunity to renew their commitment to proclaim the Gospel and to give a greater missionary focus to parish activities. It is time to reflect on the global impact of our stewardship, and to express our gratitude to missionaries who bear witness to Christ in the most remote and challenging places. The month of October can remind us that being witnesses to Jesus Christ is a stewardship responsibility of us all, and that in a world experiencing increasingly disturbing forms of alienation and indifference, our communion of faith can offer signs of hope and work to make the planet a home for all people. We are “communion” because of the gift of the Eucharist. And this gift that we celebrate in the sacrament is not something we can keep to our-selves. By its very nature it demands to be shared with everyone. That is one reason the mission-ary impulse of our Church has always been a sign of vitality in its unique witness of unity around

the world. There are a number of ways you can focus on the missionary activity of the Church:

• Include petitions for the Church’s missionary work in your daily prayers. • Increase your awareness of the wider global mission of the Church. • Discover ways to participate in specific missionary activities taking place in your parish or dio-cese.

• Give generously on World Mission Sunday, celebrated this year on October 20.

The Church’s work around the world is as important as the work in our own neighborhood. Let us be mindful this month that we are stewards of the Gospel, called to proclaim it to the ends of the earth, bringing hope to a world that is desperately hungry for Christ’s loving presence.

OCTOBER IS RESPECT LIFE MONTH

Each October is designated as Respect Life Month by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). It launches a Respect Life Program, which is a nationwide effort to help Catholics understand, value and help cultivate respect for human life.

This year’s theme is Christ Our Hope: In Every Season of Life. The attacks against human life which contradict the Gos-pel of Life also breed a culture of death. Our efforts on behalf of the unborn, the dying, the elderly, the imprisoned, the poor and so many others have a profound impact in building and spreading a culture of life.

**RETREAT FOR RESPECT LIFE COORDINATORS & COMMITTEE MEMBERS - The President of Human Life In-ternational (www.hli.org), Fr. Shenan Bouquet, is directing a weekend retreat for Parish Respect Life Coordinators (PRLC) and their Respect Life Ministry Committees:

Theme: “Put Out Into Deep Water” Friday, November 1, 5:00 PM - Sunday, November 3, 11:00 AM

4:00 PM Check in St. Stephen Diocesan Center

Register at: https://forms.gle/SrNDXqVLXapvLijf7 **PRIESTS’ TRAINING - Fr. Bouquet will also be conducting priest trainings on the major islands and a few vicariate engagements on Oahu and Maui, with the major 2019 Life Symposium for adults:

Theme: “Sacred Environment: The Family Under SIege” Saturday, November 9, 8:30 am-4:00 pm

Kroc Center, Kapolei with separate session for junior high and high school children

Register at: https://catholichawaii.org/news-events/events-calendar/2019/november/119-2019-life-symposium/. It is the vocation of all, especially the laity, to go out to be as leaven in the world, a light in the darkness. May we allow Christ to renew and strengthen us that He may work through us in every moment.to bring about a world in which every life is cherished. MAHALO TO GOOD STEWARDS

Stewardship is responsible sharing in gratitude of the gifts of time, talent and treasure that God has be-

stowed upon each one of us. This has been manifested by our dear parishioners in various ways:

***GIFTS OF LOVE

❖We acknowledge all generous contributions which support our pastoral programs and ongoing projects

as well as the basic operation of the Church and the rectory through the regular Sunday offering envelopes and dona-

tions. We, the priests, the parish staff and leaders, deeply appreciate and gratefully acknowledge all dear parishioners

who faithfully and steadily support our Church with their prayers, stewardship and personal involvement in our parish ac-

tivities and programs.

❖Wiliam & Mitronia Amoroso donated $1,000 for the Parish Repairs & Maintenance Fund. God loves a cheerful giver. Together with their son, Virgilio, they also shared bags of goodies for the children’s “Trick or Treat”.

❖Kathy E Ferreira gave $300 to OLM as her gift of love while Maria Garza donated $200 as her birthday gift to the

church. May God reward you a hundredfold.

***MINISTERS & VOLUNTEERS – Our Parish has been blessed with such responsible stewards who serve and give without

counting the cost and we keep praising and thanking God for them.

❖SAVE THE CONVENT FUNDRAISER – Our parish is embarking on another fundraising on November 16 which will be used

for the final phase of the convent renovation that includes upgrading of the plumbing, electric power lines, rooms and cab-

inets. We hope to complete the entire project in time for the 150th Anniversary of OLM Parish next year 2020. We enjoin

every parishioner to support the fund drive in the spirit of generous stewardship and help realize our goal and dream. You

may also be the lucky winner of a huge prize for doing so.

❖CHURCH CLEANERS – Every Saturday a group of men and women parishioners prepare the Church for the weekend

celebrations. They clean the altar and the floor, wipe the pews, arrange the books, flowers and linens, put up the season-

al banners and other tasks. They set up the proper worship environments and make our celebrations dignified and mean-

ingful. We do appreciate them for their dedication and devotion. Among them, Marivic Palting takes charge of the plants

and flower decorations at the sanctuary. If you are interested to join, please see Roselani Ramones.

Giving occasionally some bunch of flowers for the church is Myra dela Cruz. She has been a regular donor thru her friend

and OLM parishioner Adoracion Padilla. Mahalo and God bless you!

❖GROUNDKEEPER – The grounds and backyard landscape are mowed by Clem Fontanilla who also checks the doors and

locks the gate at the end of the day.

❖CHURCH CHOIR – Every Wednesday and Saturday, the choir takes time to rehearse under the baton of Mary Ann Llam-

edo. Aside from the adults, children and the youth are being trained cantors. The Sunday worship is made more alive be-

cause of their lead in singing praises to God. Please don’t hesitate to share your talent. Come and join the choir and their

practices on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Also assisting in the rehearsals and instrumentation are Audrey Peralta, Connie

de Santos and the Llamedo Band.

❖SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING – This is a mandated compliance in the entire church of the United States for all who

work, serve, minister and volunteer in the parishes. Some have fulfilled the Safe Environment enrolment by themselves

but for those who have not done it, please let the Safe Environment Coordinator, Fran Kovaloff, know so she can set a

time to assist you. This is done online with the use of a computer.

***Our parish is always welcoming and open to any parishioner who wants to volunteer in the councils, commit-tees, ministries, organizations, clubs, prayer groups and donor societies and share your God-given talents and gifts to keep our Church going. You may submit your name at the parish office or contact our pastor. God bless and reward you abundantly.

*TO ALL THE GOOD STEWARDS, OUR SINCERE THANK YOU!*

*Saturday, October 19, 2019 from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm

St. John Vianney Parish 920 Keolu Drive, Kailua, HI 96734

Stewardship is a way of life. It helps meet the needs of healthy parishes with their own resources. Be ready to create new initiatives, sustain services and ministries,

and find leaders to fulfill the missions.

Learn what it takes to start a stewardship effort at your parish. Understand how to use different communication platforms like your website and social media to tell your parish stewardship story. Apply techniques that will keep your parish community engaged long after you start.

Feel confident with the ideas and inspiration from other successful stewardship parishes here in Hawaii. When you are ready to act, you will know who to call and where to go for resources to support you in your effort. This is open to anyone who wants to become a steward of the gospel and live a life inspired by Christ.

Mass at 8:00am. Bring a friend. It ’s free!

ALL SOULS’ DAY MASS

*November 2, Saturday, 7:00am

Let us come together and offer a special Mass in Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed that God may grant them rest and peace in his heavenly kingdom and that they may pray for us, the living, too.

Don’t forget to write their names in the Book of Remembrance so they can be included in our prayers and Masses through-out the month of November. You may also bring their portraits for placement at the Shrine of the Faithful.

As mentioned in the Bible, it is also a worthy act to make sacrificial offerings on behalf of our beloved dead, so there are envelopes provided for your use.
