...and a word or two from the President's seat — Skip Carter

Sleazy Dog Construction

Sleazy Dog Construction

On the Cover...Roger Lubeck has been a Grand Prix Region member for 4 years. His 993 Coupe has won several Concours awards. Roger has been a real asset for GPX, volunteering on a regular basis and always willing to lend a hand..

October is here. Whew — Summer is over, the last ALMS race of the season is in just a few weeks at Laguna Seca (and many of you are caravaning up with Greg White). Our Fall Day Away from Work Drivers Ed / Autocross is Monday, October 13... and is filling up fast.

We've scheduled our annual Holiday Party for Saturday, December 6. We have been trying to schedule the Long Beach Yacht Club, but their kitchen is closing for remodel and we just weren't able to come up with a good date. Fortu-nately, Barbara Gillam stepped up and has graciously offered her wonderful home in Ladera Heights for the event. We are working on the caterer and except to have a great party. Look for more information soon.

We have several new advertisers in this issue. Pacific Porsche in Redondo Beach is on the back cover. Many of you re-member that Pacific used to be Vasek Polak's dealership. A lot of history there!.

Another new advertiser, North Hollywood Speedometer and Clock Company, has been around for a long time. If you have ever been involved in restoring a car, chances are that North Hollywood Speedometer worked on the gauges. When I did my '64 Cab over 10 years ago, my gauges were shipped to these guys. Speaking from personal experience, I've never had a single problem.

Accutrack is our third new advertiser. Kenny Bornstein owns this independent Porsche/BMW repair shop that has been in Manhattan Beach for decades and has a reputation for personal, good quality work. He owns a slew of Porsches, in-cluding several 356s and an '06 C4S Cab. He grew up in the South Bay loving Porsches. As a college senior, with $1800, a small tool box and a portable am-fm radio, he opened his first shop. Things went pretty well and, after a few years he bought his first race car, a Lola 320 Super Vee. He got in to Formula Ford racing and did pretty well, and the rest is his-tory. If you are in the neighborhood, 1117 6th St, Manhat-tan Beach, stop by and say hello.

One correction we made in the ad for Aase Motors. Some-how we have been running the Aase ad with the wrong

phone number. We apologize if this has caused an inconve-nience for anyone. The correct number is 714-992-2283.

Another event on our calendar is a Grand Prix Region Mystery Weekend set for January 10-11. The idea is that, without knowing the final destination, we'll head out on Saturday morning on a Tour that will include some spec-tacular Porsche roads, several interesting stops, including lunch, and arrival at our overnight stop where we will have a hotel, dinner and other entertainment setup. Sunday morning we will meet for Breakfast. There will be plenty of things to see, and we will make our own ways back home. We will probably limit this to 15-18 cars (it's hard to manage more than that for this type of event).

So, stay tuned for more news of these and other upcoming events.

PS: I want to thank new mem-ber, Chuck Haas for his great article on our Nethercutt Col-lection Tour.

Why are we making two visits to the Nethercutt Museum in months? During last month's tour, Roger Lubeck noticed the Nethercutt Restoration Facility and found out that he could arrange for a small group (0) to visit on December 1. This is not something they publicize, and we owe this opportunity to Roger's resourcefulness.

The Nethercutt is one of the most impressive private car collections we have visited. And it's more than just cars! The collection of self-playing musical instruments is amazing. During the Holiday Season they conduct small concerts. At 2:00pm there will be an Organ Concert and, the entire facility will be decorated to the 9's.

Two choices on travel to the Nethercutt: 1. Meet behind the Federal Building on Wilshire Blvd (off the I-405) at 8:0 am for a 9:00 SHARP departure. 2. Go directly to the Nethercutt Collection and meet there at 9:45 Nethercutt: 15151 Bledsoe St, Sylmar, CA (818) 64-6464

We will gather at the Nethercutt by 9:45 am for a 2-hour tour of the Collection and Restoration Facility.

The Nethercutt Collection & Museum — over 240 automobiles.

In 1956, J.B. Nethercutt purchased two cars, a 196 Duesenberg Convertible Roadster for $5,000 and a 190 DuPont Town Car for $500, both needed total refurbishing. He estimated that the DuPont restoration would take a few weeks, but it took 18 months and over $65,000. It was shown at The Pebble Beach in 1958 where it won “Best of Show”. Since1958, Mr. Nethercutt has won Pebble Beach six times, more than any other individual. The Duesenberg and DuPont are still in the Collection.

The place is called the Nethercutt Collection, but it could easily be called “the house that cosmetics built.” The finan-cial power behind one of the most amazing private collec-tions of classic automobiles in the world is the massive Merle Norman cosmetics empire… But more on that later.

On a slightly overcast August morning, almost fifty GPX members and guests gathered at the Nethercutt Museum in Sylmar, Ca on the northern edge of the San Fernando Valley. Most were first time visitors at this very special complex, which includes the Nethercutt Museum and the adjacent “by appointment only” Nethercutt Collection. J.B. Nethercutt was the nephew of Merle Norman, who founded the cosmet-ics company by the same name. J.B. passed in 2004 and one of his sons currently directs the operations of the museum.

Nethercutt began collecting classic and vintage automo-biles in 1956 and, over time, has tallied more Pebble Beach Concours wins than any other collector. The Collection has now grown to more than 200 vintage and antique cars, with a very heavy emphasis on pre-war models. With the excep-tion of a few non-restored and preserved pieces, all cars are impeccably restored by a full-time staff of 15 mechanics, then serviced, registered and driven annually. The Museum was built in 2000 to house the Collection’s “overflow” of approximately 130 cars. Among literally dozens of other

marques, the Museum houses an impressive collection of Dusenburgs, Cadillacs and Rolls-Royces, the newest which was a 1967. Every single car appeared to have personalized plates, but judging by all the variations of “JBN” plates on the Rolls-Royces, I have a strong suspicion that these were J.B.’s favored daily drivers.

Highlights from the “museum side” include a 1913 Chris-tie front drive steam pumper fire engine, a 100 MPH 1913 Mercedes Double Phaeton and a breathtaking, award-win-ning 1931 Bugatti Coupe. Of the Bugatti, one of my guests remarked, “I think that’s the most beautiful car I’ve ever seen.”

Completed in 1974, the building housing the Nethercutt Collection proper is located across the street from the museum. The top floor once contained an apartment where the family stayed on weekends, and the bottom floor once served as the family’s personal parking garage. It now houses several cars. The opulent Grand Salon on the second floor is undoubtedly the focal point of the Collection. It is covered in three kinds of marble and adorned with crystal chande-liers hung from decorated ceilings 32 feet in the air. Along with several other classics, this room houses the crown jewels of the entire collection: a one-of-a kind 1933 Duesenberg SJ Arlington Torpedo priced at 20,000 period dollars and a 1930 Du Pont, which was Nethercutt’s first acquisition, and also his first entry and win at Pebble Beach. The estimated value of the Duesenberg is more than $12 million.

Speaking of prices, nothing here is for sale — ever. An acquisition into the Nethercutt collection is a one-way ticket. The latest is a Helms Bakery truck, which is undergoing restoration in the museum’s private restoration shop. Several GPX members mentioned that the shop could have indeed been the best part of the tour, but alas, it was not included. The fourth floor contains the Music Room, which includes one of the world’s largest Wurlizter Theater pipe organs, with a whopping 5,000 individual pipes. After hearing a demonstration of several other restored antique mechanical instruments, GPX members were treated to a brief concert that included a Phantom of the Opera medley, Ghost Riders in the Sky and the theme from Star Wars.

All in all, this tour was an amazing opportunity and a “must see” for any Southern California auto enthusiast. Members who attended this great event as well as those who missed it have reason to return: the Collection is rotated periodically, which means that the next time we visit, there should be several different vehicles on display. Maybe the Helms Bak-ery truck will be ready by then? I’m hoping to see their 1937 Talbot Lago Sports Coupe myself!

Off we drove from San Diego on our way to another Porsche Parade, this time in Charlotte, North Carolina. We quickly felt 115 degree heat going through Arizona and New Mexico. We drove by the beautiful red Indian Centers with all the open space around, spending the second night in Albuquerque. Day 3 saw us passing through Northern Texas and into Oklahoma City. According to Jack the driving isn’t hard part - it’s the loading and unloading every day.

We didn’t sightsee on our way to Charlotte (we've been on these roads many times). Our last night before hitting Parade was a hotel on Beale Street in Memphis. There were hundreds of motorcycles and thousands of people mill-ing all over the streets - the Blues was blaring out from everywhere. Wonderful homes and gardens. It was an interesting experience! One family restaurant sported a sign: "If yer smoking, ya must be on fire.”

Arriving in Charlotte for the 53rd Porsche Parade (ed: FYI, Jack and Ginny attended the very first Parade, winning several trophies, including the Rally, Autocross and Overall) we got to the Welcome Tent and immediately started seeing old friends. The next day we attended a luncheon hosted by Pamela Kelly, the wife of PCA President, Prescott Kelly. This was followed by the PCA board meeting where Prescott talked about the new Porsche models being in-troduced in Spain. That night we attended the Zone 8 party on the hotel patio and had a very pleasant time with everyone.

Sunday was the Concours, which was set on the downtown streets. Cars were arranged and organized by model and accessible so you could be up close and could easily walk around them. The cars were all gleaming and beautifully prepared. We picked up a boxed lunch and ate in a lovely little park. After the Concours we dragged ourselves back to the hotel to get our car for a sight see-ing ride around town. The Welcome Party was that evening at the convention center - good BBQ and a fun evening.

We were up early Monday at 6 am to be on the road for the Gimmick Rally. The start was Bridgestone's headquarters, where they served a full breakfast to everyone. We just went for the ride and didn’t answer the questions. Instead we watched lots of cars running back and forth looking for the answers. That night was the Concours Banquet. There were several speakers including Detlev von Platen (President and CEO of PCNA) and Thomas Edig (member of the board of Porsche AG). It was a most festive evening with awards handed out for the winning Concours cars.

Tuesday we volunteered in Hospitality and had lunch on a restaurant down the street in a beautiful little park where the ice cream social was held. That night we went to the Nacho and Margarita Party (we passed on the Margaritas for a glass of wine instead) We walked back to the park and had dinner with some friends.

Wednesday we were back in the Convention Center working at the Historic Display. The cars were arranged from 1948 to 2008. Among them was Al Hol-

bert’s 1959 Speedster GT as well as an ALMS LMP2, an RS Spyder and Ginny’s favorite, a 550 Spyder. Norbert Singer, a special guest, came from Germany with his wife. He recently retired from Porsche AG. He was responsible for (among other things) the creation of the Duck Tail, the RSR and the 956/962 programs. He gave an excellent speech at the Historic and Heritage display making it a special experience working there. Next was the Shell Zone Challenge where the Zones competed in a number of different skills – lots of enthusiasm and friendly completion between people from the 13 Zones.

The President’s reception was held at Bentley 27, a beautiful restaurant on the 27th floor that had a magnificent view of Charlotte. The food was excellent and afterwards we enjoyed a ride back to the hotel with Peter Porsche. This was fol-lowed by the dessert party. The next day was the Volunteer’s brunch. There sure was no shortage of good food and good company.

The Victory banquet was an elegant affair with a wonderful dinner. The speak-ers were Hans Peter Porsche, PCA National President Prescott Kelly, Paul Gregor (Club Coordination from Porsche AG), Harvey Yancey (2008 Parade Chair) and Kathy and Walt Fricke, Parade Chairs for the 2009 Keystone Colorado Parade. Awards were presented, including the Grand Prize from Porsche AG, which is a fabulous trip to Germany and the Porsche factory. Harvey Yancey and his staff did a great job. Mark Shevitz did an excellent job as Emcee (as he does every Parade) and Dr. Leonard Turner gave the closing prayer that left few dry eyes in the house. We can’t wait to see Panorama editor Betty Jo Turner’s coverage of this year's Parade.

On Friday, July 4th we hopped on I-77 towards South Carolina. The temperature was 94 degrees and we headed to Savannah, Georgia for two days. When we ar-rived we drove around looking at the Colonial homes and then went driving along the river. There are squares throughout the town with beautiful trees, flowers and statues. We saw open horse carriages which is a good way to see the city at a nice pace (but not as nice as our red Boxster).

The following day we took a trolley ride with a very informative guide who talked about the homes we went by. A storm came along with thunder and lightening cracking over our heads. We went into a house called Andrew Low, successful cotton merchant, and Julliett Gordon Low, daughter in law of the founder of the Girl Scouts of America. The house was decorated with carved woodwork and had a beautiful garden with its original design. Next we visited the Richardson Owens Thomas home built in 1860, a regency style. He was a banker and cotton mer-chant. The fascinating kitchen had a collection of cookware which demonstrates a 19th century method of open hearth cooking. We would love to spend more time there.

We started home on Sunday and took the I-40. Gas was, $4.19 and the tempera-ture was 71 degrees. It poured rain again. We stayed in Chattanooga and saw the depot of the Chattanooga Choo-Choo. Back through Memphis and on to Albu-querque and Arizona, heading towards Sedona in 100 degrees of heat. We stayed the night in Scottsdale, which was a nice end to our trip. The next day we happily headed home with memories of yet another wonderful Parade and road trip.

Jack and Ginny are charter members of PCA (see their license plate "PCA in 55" below). An inspiration to most of us, Jack and Ginny are no slouches in their mid-80s. They gave logged over 125,000 miles on their 3-year old Boxster.

Breakfast Club Meeting Report — Sep 6by Pete Ross photos by John Perchulyn & Skip Carter

Our monthly Breakfast Club meeting held on Septem-ber 6 was, again, something to behold. It was truly an impressive array of Porsches that adorned the available parking spaces at Ricky and Ronnie’s Cruise In Diner located in the beautiful City of Torrance. While not every-one partook of breakfast, we had upwards of 90 people in attendance. I'm not saying that the parking lot was completely full, but we're having to be careful about how we park cars to make sure everyone gets a spot.

Over that last five or six meetings, it’s obvious that these first Saturday events are the place to be if you own a Porsche. Heck, even if you don’t own a Porsche, it’s still a great place to hang out. That fact is proved monthly, by an assortment of individuals and various groups of people that see the cars in the lot, and come over to peruse the Porsches.

I misplaced my favorite camera awhile back and, as a result, I hadn’t taken any photographs. Last month I found it but still didn’t take any pictures. Mainly I was too busy talking to all the new and prospective members. Every month it seems that we have more and more new members arriving. In addition, a lot of our longer term members are showing up to their first GPX event. We know that many others would love to show up, but they can’t because they have to work. Then there are those who prefer to sleep in on the first Saturday, as opposed to coming to Ricky and Ronnie’s and talk about your car. Remember, after the meeting is over, you can go home and resume your beauty sleep.

Some of the Breakfast highlights were new members this month were Ron and Vicki Mazzella, who arrived in their 1989 Silver Anniversary Edition Carrera. Ricky DeLaRosa showed up and submitted his membership application. Rob Friedman drove his unique Chromo Flair Violet Carrera to the meeting, and Mike Mehnert came sporting his 1979 Me-tallic Blue 911SC. Overall, it was an incredibly huge turnout and a lot of our regular attendees were not even there. A large group from the 912 Registry attend as well, including Bob Benton whose company, Benton Performance, later that day hosted a joint 912 Registry/GPX tech session and the famous Benton BBQ at his shop in La Habra. It added up to lots and lots of Porsches.

Another very special part of the Breakfast was Pacific Porsche's participation. They came with several things to offer. They have a charity fundraising event selling a limited number of $100 raffle tickets on a new Boxster S.

Arturo Chapparo was very thrilled to win the 60th Anniversary Porsche Design watch brought by Carl Toffelmire & Lennie Yee of Pacific Porsche

They also brought a Porsche Design 60th Porsche An-niversary watch. The watch was going to be won by one of the people who purchased the Boxster raffle tickets that morning. Earlier that morning, Skip was making the rounds showing off the watch. Upon seeing it, Arturo Chapparo's eye lite up and it was difficult for Skip to get the watch back. Wouldn't you know it, when Jake Chan-dler drew the winning ticket, it was Arturo who was the winner. Congratulations to Arturo and thank you to Carl Toffelmire and Lenny Yee from Pacific Porsche.

The third announcement from Pacific was their upcom-ing new 2009 911 Launch Party after our October 4 Breakfast Club. There will also be a Service Clinic, the 2009 911 Demonstration ride and drive, and a fine selec-tion of music, food and refreshments. The last order of business is updating your Porsche Club of America profile on the PCA website (www.pca.org). Please go to the site, and update your current informa-tion. Occasionally we'll get a request from someone in the media or movie industry looking for a specific Porsche to use for a photo shoot or film. I look at the PCA roster for a match and put the owner of that vehicle in touch with the interested media party. So, update your PCA information and be ready to make a star out of your car. See you next month.

Benton Performance BBQ & Tech Sessionstory & photos by Skip Carter

If you haven't noticed lately, there is a large group of 912 owners out there, most of them members of the 912 Reg-istgry (www.912Registry.org). Also, if you haven't noticed, the value of these cars has risen from very little to... well, more than respectible levels.

The Grand Prix Region has been fortunate to have the 912 Registry join us at several events over the last year, including our Queen Mary Concours. We were initially concerned because most of these folk had never partici-pated in Zone 8 competition before. Our concerns were soon put to rest as 912s swept the top awards — ALL the top awards.

We were very excited to participate with the Benton Perfor-mance BBQ & Tech Session. John & Brenda Benton's show is in a parklike setting in La Habra. Tables and displays were setup under magnificent Sycamore's in front of the shop. A tremendous crowd showed up for great food, wonderful prizes and an informative tour of the shop, complete with cars on the lift, hands on parts and a Q&A session.

Don't think that 912s are the only models allowed in the shop. There was an Alfa somewhere in John's past, with 356s and many other Porsche models in evidence.

All in all, it was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon after already enjoying a wonderful morning at the GPX Breakfast Club.

John Dimock and his newly restored Lacia. He got it done just in time for a round trip drive to the Monterey Historics and back... quite a chore in this vintage car

October 2008

In The Circuit’s February 2008 issue, we introduced you to Africa’s SUstainable DEvelopment Council - the organization on which the Grand Prix Region Board of Directors agreed in 2007 to focus its fundraising efforts for the next couple of years. This is the first of several articles that will discuss ASUDEC’s objectives, who ASUDEC benefits, and how ASUDEC’s efforts might make a difference to the world.

“ASUDEC’s vision is a World Nation where all nationalists have melted into one family in which all people live in harmony, peace, abundance and eq-uity, guided by laic spirituality.”

“ASUDEC’s mission is to help the African people find bet-ter ways of thinking and doing, which will permit restora-tion and/or preservation of the environment, of peace, of equity and of social harmony in favor of a sustainable development that would honor the Supreme Being.”

“Laic spirituality and the passing-on of the gift (Animals, knowledge, equip-ment, cash credit funds, etc.) together form the principal strategy of ASUDEC.

While the Passing-on of the gift provides relief to a large number of people in need from poverty and suffering, laic spirituality cultures wisdom, peace, and solidarity leading towards the universal well-being envisioned by ASUDEC.”

GPX has a long history of extending a helping hand to others who are struggling to make a better life, recover from a disaster or striving to rise above a disabling obstacle. It is this caring that stands as a hallmark of GPX in the community -- and shows the community our true character as being more than just a car club.

ASUDEC seems to have found a formula for translating the hope and desire for a better world into reality. It focuses on sustainable develop-ment in Africa, the alleviation of ignorance, poverty and food insecurity, and the preservation and enhancement of biodiver-sity and the environment. Those actions will help Africa become an active participant in the “global village.” That action, in the end, will benefit us all. We hope you will join GPX in that effort.

Future articles will address ASUDEC’s programs and activities.
