october is breast cancer awareness montH· Every 2 minutes, there is a new breast cancer diagnosis.· Every 14 minutes, a life is lost to the disease. · Over 40,000 people will die this year; about 400 of them will be men.· 85% of all diagnoses have no family history.· 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer.· Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women between ages 40 and 55.

A SnApShot of BreASt CAnCerIncidence and Mortality rate trendsIn the United States, breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in women. Each year, a small number of men also are diagnosed with or die from breast cancer. Although the breast cancer diagnosis rate has increased, there has been a steady drop in the overall breast cancer death rate since the early 1990’s.

While the incidence rate is lower for African Americans than Cauca-sians, the mortality rate is higher. Women of other racial and ethnic groups have lower incidence and mortality rates.

WhAt Are the SyMptoMS of BreASt CAnCer?When breast cancer starts out, it is too small to feel and does not cause signs and symptoms. As it grows, however, breast cancer can cause changes in how the breast looks or feels.

Symptoms may include—• New lump in the breast or underarm (armpit).

• Thickening or swelling of part of the breast.• Irritation or dimpling of breast skin.• Redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or the breast.• Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area.• Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood.• Any change in the size or the shape of the breast.• Pain in any area of the breast.

hoW CAn I loWer My rISk of BreASt CAnCer?• Control your weight and exercise.• Know your family history of breast cancer. If you have a mother, sister, or daughter with breast cancer, ask your doctor what is your risk of getting breast cancer and how you can lower your risk.• Find out the risks and benefits of hormone replacement therapy.• Limit the amount of alcohol you drink.

va bUriaL benefitsMany veterans are under the impression that their status as a veteran means that the government will pay for their burial. This is not true and it can cause great financial hardship for families who don’t understand it at a time when they are least prepared to deal with it. It is very important that veterans have their discharge papers located in a secure place known to their next of kin. Eligibility for potential burial benefits depends on these documents, and they cannot always be obtained quickly from government sources. To be eligible for burial benefits, a veteran must have been discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. Certain other factors including time period and length of service may apply, so the family should contact the VA for final determination of eligibility. Burial benefits available include a gravesite in any of VA’s 131 national cemeteries, as well as in state- owned- and- operated veterans’ cemeteries.

For veterans interred at a national or state veterans’ cemetery, the opening and closing of the grave and perpetual care are provided at no cost. If buried at a private cemetery, the family must pay these costs, as well as the cost of the plot and any related expenses. The VA will provide a burial flag, a government marker, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate, regardless of where the veteran is buried.

If burial is to take place in a national or state veterans’ cemetery, the cemetery will make the arrangements for the interment only. Neither the cemetery nor the VA makes funeral arrangements or performs cremations. It is the responsibility of the veteran’s family to make arrangements for funeral services with a funeral home, including memorial services, viewings, preparing and transporting the remains, the casket, etc. Any items or services obtained from a funeral home will be at the families’ expense, including the plot and grave provisions if the veteran is not buried in a national or state cemetery. The VA does not pay for any expenses related to a veteran’s burial or funeral.

Certain survivors may apply for a monetary burial allowance paid after-the-fact by the VA, but generally only if the veteran was in receipt of VA disability compensation or pension at the time of death, or if the veteran died while hospitalized by VA or while receiving care under VA contract at a non-VA facility. The amount payable depends on whether the veteran’s death was related to a military service-connected disability, with the payments ranging from $300 to $2,000. There are other factors that can affect potential eligibility for this benefit, so veterans or their families should contact the VA.

For further information on this and all VA Benefits, contact the VA toll free at 1-800-827-1000 or the Retired Activities Office at (843) 228-4574.

LIBRARY

JUNE 2012 MCCS HAPPENINGS

the Hero treeFive years ago a group of librarians from Illinois created the Hero Tree to honor the military members fighting in the wars in Iraq and Af-ghanistan. The idea has spread and the Hero Tree is now found in numerous libraries across the nation. The trees are completely decorated in white and yellow. The white lights remember those who were unable to come home to their families. The yellow ribbons symbolize our wish that all military personnel remain safe both dur-ing combat and on their journey home. Each year the participation on Parris Island and on the Air Station has increased. Color is added to the trees through the decorations which surround each picture. The tree is decorated with pictures of Marines and other military personnel who are serving, have served or are retired. Please pro-vide your child with a copy of their special hero, which may include the child or family, when the request comes home from their CDC teachers. Several classes create individual art work around the pictures. The class then comes to one of the libraries to hang each picture. Anyone wishing to display a picture is welcome to bring them to either library. They will be mounted and displayed. A number is placed on the back of the picture and a record is created so they may be returned in mid-November. The library en-courages parents to hang each picture on the family Christmas tree. This is especially helpful for children whose parent is deployed during the holidays. Anyone who wears the uniform of the United States military is a hero without question. We welcome and encourage Marines to donate pictures for the Hero Tree. The trees will go up in mid-October and will remain for an entire month. Pictures will go home before Thanksgiving.

new titlesHostage by elie wiesel. Wiesel combines his Holocaust focus with the contemporary Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Abducted on the streets of Brooklyn in 1975 and imprisoned in a basement room, Jewish writer Shaltiel Feigenberg is held hostage for three Palestinian soldiers, one im-prisoned in the U.S., the other two in Israel. His captors send a message to his wife, who tells the police: if the Palestinians are not freed, Shaltiel will be executed. The prisoner’s terse first-person, present-tense narrative will hold readers. De-

prived of food and sleep, blindfolded, and tied to a chair, he tries to hold on by remembering his favorite stories and traditions and the miraculous history of his father’s return from Auschwitz.

the inn at rose Harbor by debbie macomber. The prolific Macomber introduces a spin-off of sorts from her popular Cedar Cove series, still set in that fictional small town but centered on Jo Marie Rose, a youngish widow who buys and operates the bed-and-breakfast of the title. This clever premise allows Macomber to craft stories around the B&B’s guests, Abby and Josh in this inaugural effort, while using Jo Marie and her ongoing recovery from the death of her hus-band, Paul, in Afghanistan as the series’ anchor. This first book is tasked with the heavy lifting of establishing Jo Marie’s character and what’s sure to become the regular cast of supporting play-ers, including enigmatic handyman Mark and trusty canine companion, Rover.

paterno by Joe posnanski. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Joseph Vincent Paterno, known as ‘JoePa’ to millions of football fans around the world, was America’s winningest college football coach. Now, Posnanski, who spent the last two years of Paterno’s life with him, getting to know him and his family, offers the definitive account of his epic life, from his birth in 1926 to his death in 2012.

the Kingmaker’s daughter by philippa gregory. Anne Neville and her sister Isabel, daughters of the man known as the ‘Kingmak-er,’ once used by him as pawns in his political games, have now grown into influential players in their own right. Anne becomes fearful when her father makes war on his former friends. Her fortune turns when Richard III rescues her from her sister’s house and she ascends to the throne as queen. Cousins’ war series.

the Light between oceans by m.L. stedman. Home from war in 1918, Tom and his wife, Isa-bel, take the job as lighthouse keepers. Living in isolation, Isabel suffers two miscarriages and a stillbirth. Then, one day a boat with a dead man and a live baby washes up on shore. They claim the child as their own. What will they do when they learn of a mother who has been searching for her lost baby? Debut Novel.

the dog stars by peter Heller. Hig lives in an airplane hanger with his dog, the only survivors of the flu that killed his wife and his friends. He occasionally flies his Cessna off to the moun-tains where he fishes and pretends that things are normal.
