Musings by Marge (reprinted from April, 2006)It shocked me that day I realized the magic of themusical scale! I was not prepared to learn that in ourmusical culture, we have only twelve notes. On thepiano, we see them as seven white keys and five blackones, repeated up and down the keyboard as octaves. We arrange these notes into chords and tunes bychanging key patterns, rhythms, harmonies, tempos andcultural styles. Can you believe that the genius,Beethoven, didn’t have anything more to work with thanthe humble mother who put the nursery rhymes tomusic?

I think these twelve notes were woven into my spiritbefore I came to this Earth. The songs of my childhoodwere written just for me. I also found pleasure in theIndian chants that drifted into Blanding whenever therewas a “Sing” in one of the camps outside the town limits.I learned the rhythms and tones of them and entertainedmy college friends by imitating them.

As a child I listened, with the sawmill crew, as theyplayed the old folk songs and a few of the more modernditties, on a wind-up phonograph. That’s where Ilearned songs like “The Big Rock Candy Mountain”,and “The Old Pine Tree”. Today, I get chills ofenjoyment when I hear a recording of Roy Rogers andSons of the Pioneers, or some of their good imitators. Ienjoy the gospel songs that have drifted up from theAppalachian Mountains and the songs sung in the old-time religious revivals.

John Phillip Sousa knew what to do with those twelvenotes when he created the marches that make me taptime. The jazz and swing music of the “Big Band” erahad a major influence in my growing up. We still hear

many ballads of lovers separated by a terrible war: “RedSails in the Sunset”, “When the Swallows Come Back toCapistrano” or “Deep Purple”, and we knew thatsomeone, somewhere, some time long ago had heardthose songs with the same emotions they were sung with. Why would I like to forget the silly stuff like “Don’t’ SitUnder the Apple Tree”, or – heaven forbid – “MairzyDoats”?

I accepted the pop music brought into my life by childrengrowing up in my home. I honestly do enjoy the Rock‘n Roll of the Elvis period, but I can’t tolerate the heavymetal stuff. To me, good music must have a pattern, arhythm, a tune and an appropriate harmony. It needsimagination and it’s best when performed by someonewho feels it and enjoys what he sings or plays. I love tohear children sing, and can appreciate beginners learningto play an instrument.

My favorite music is classical string. My favoriteinstruments are the violin and the piano. One of myfavorite tapes is a Debussy, played by a harp and oboe.I become mesmerized when I settle down in a symphonyhall and listen. Please, don’t say anything; don’t disturbthe music! I like choruses with their voices andversatility. I don’t care for the opera, unless I can watchit and be caught up in the drama. High soprano ariashurt my ears, but I respect the long years and hard workthese gifted women have practiced to learn to screechthe way they do.

What does all this have to do with fiddling? Well, on theday when I’m down and discouraged, when I needsomething to boost my spirits and turn me back into adecent, functioning individual, I want the snappy and

Jarl Jacobson is a member of our Salt Lake Chapteras well as our State Chairman. Our chapterappreciates his many gifts; we count on him to leadour twice a month jams, and we enjoy his harmonica, guitar, voice and piano skills. He competed in theMay Salt Lake Chapter Fiddlin’ and Pickin’ Contestharmonica section and he took first place with theSouthwest tune “Purple Lilies”. He says he likes tolearn fiddle tunes so he can have the “ear” of “fiddle-oriented” judges.

“Purple Lilies” is from a group of tunes calledSouthwest Tunes which are collected from the

Gu-Achi Fiddlers: Old Time Music of the TohonoO’Odham Native American tribe from southernArizona and Mexico. See a YouTube of the bandBayou Seco playing Purple Lilies herehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0Pzst6LWQQ.

We have included the music for Purple Lilies and 2other Southwest tunes in this newsletter. Enjoy ataste of what fun this music is to play.

“When are you going to get an instrument to play,Shelley?” is a question I have been asked many times.Often I attend UOTF events, and you can find mewith a camera in my hand. I have written articles forthe newsletter. But, I didn’t play, until now.

John and I had our 25th class reunion in July, and sowe took the 3 youngest kids with us home toPennsylvania. While we were there, Meagan andJohn got to entertain both sides of the family with theirviolin and hammered dulcimer.

Music is the kind of gift that is never minded when it isshared. It was a rare treat to see the 2nd cousinchildren join in with an Irish dance to accompany themusic, a proof that Grandpa Patrick Gorman’s lovefor music lives on in his descendants.

On the way home, we attended the ODPC Funfest inEvart, Michigan. The Original Dulcimer Players Clubevent is billed as the World’s Largest Hammered

Dulcimer gathering. They set the world record for thelargest number of hammered dulcimers playingtogether with 197 hammered dulcimers in 2009, andthat doesn’t even include the number of mountaindulcimers players.

We tired ourselves out with classes during thedaytime, and jam sessions that lasted well pastmidnight. At the event, I purchased a mountaindulcimer, and my classes were taken with 80+ otherattendees! John’s hammered dulcimer classes werealso packed, as we took lessons in the barns at theOsceola County Fairgrounds. We even appear invideos taken at the event on YouTube. It was amountain top experience, one that we will have torepeat someday.

We have added links to the webpage for free sheetmusic, including tunes from the Carp Camp(Carpilation song book) that we joined for the nightlyjams, and to other old time fiddler organizations, including the ODPC. If you haven’t visited thewebpage lately to see all the wealth of information, please take a day to explore it.
