MESSAGE from the POTENTATE Illustrious Sir, Ed Stolze

Nobles and Ladies, Wow, it’s almost fall and we’re moving quickly towards the

Holiday Season again. The weather is starting to cool down, but the activities in the Shrine are starting to heat up and get really busy.

We had a great Circus last month. We had a fabulous turnout of Nobles and Ladies to help, and we had record crowds. Illustrious Sir Jack Garrett states that he hasn’t seen numbers like this in over 25 years. The Nobles and Ladies out did themselves with the number of volunteers, and the smooth transitions we had from one performance to the next. We truly appreciate all of our Volunteers and the outstanding work that they did.

Our Fall Lake Havasu Ceremonial is fast approaching and right now we have over 20 Candidates for Lake Havasu with hopes for at least 30. This year we are doing a joint ceremonial with Al Malaikah Shrine from Los Angeles. They will have Candidates that will be going through the Ceremonies with ours, so it truly will be a “Big Show”. Make sure you come early, and plan to have a great time with our neighbor Temple from LA. This year’s Ceremonial is in honor of Noble Bill Fain. A 53 year Mason, and 50 year Legacy Shriner. He and his Lady Nancy have done great things for Masonry and Shrinedom in Arizona and it will be a great treat to honor them at the Ceremonial Dinner.

Please continue to work towards membership and fundraising. Our new members are the future of our organization and fraternity, and our work towards general fund donations and fundraisers will ensure that El Zaribah can continue to fulfill our purpose of Shriners Hospitals for Children®. I encourage each and every one of you to consider donations to the general fund, or fundraising opportunities that will go to our operational expenses.

As always, each of you is a “Shining Ray of Hope” for our Temple, our Fraternity and our Children. Keep up the great work!!!

MESSAGE from the EDITOR Illustrious Sir, Leo Balthazor

This past month has been a busy one for El Zaribah Shrine. The CornFest was very successful. The thoughts from many were that we served twice as many people as last year. From my point of view, things behind the scene worked very well. The Shriners were showing their ability to team up to create a great event. The tough time we have from a publisher’s point

of view is how to convey the effort and the fun that such events create.

We then paused for a week or so and off we went doing the circus at WestWorld. Again we saw great crowds and Shriners doing what they do best, giving kids a chance to smile and have fun. We have tried to show the size of the crowd in the photo stories. There is no way to try and single out one person or unit, it was truly a group effort that really created the best results. I was able to pass my tickets to a young family who lives near me. The kids are still talking about the circus and the great time they had. As I drove a golf cart at the circus, again and again people marveled at how great a show they saw and many were already planning for next year. These are the things we do for others, and next month we start doing some big things for ourselves. Watch for the ceremonial data and come share in a great time the Lake Havasu Ceremonial honoring WB Bill Fain.

Shrine Legacies 1

My Dad grew up in a very small town in southwestern Minnesota. He was one of eleven children and son of a Lutheran minister. When he married in 1926, his father-in-law suggested that he should consider Masonry. My Dad was concerned about what his father might think. One day, he got up his courage and asked his father what he would think. He answered, “Several good men in my congregation are Masons. I guess it must be ok.”

Thanks to my grandfather, my Dad was now headed to a wonderful life as a Mason and as a Shriner. While working for the Boeing Company in Wichita, during the war, he joined Midian Temple in 1944. At the time, it was said to be the largest Shrine class ever - over 1,000 members.

After the war, our family moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, and my Dad joined the Osman Temple. He sang with the Osman Chanters for over forty years and was a member of the elite men's quartet. He truly enjoyed rehearsal nights and performances. The Chanters were in most parades - among them the famous St. Paul Winter Carnival parade. One could assume very cold weather for that parade, but even at ninety years old, he climbed up on that flatbed truck with his brothers, to sing in ten below zero temperature. His quartet was always available for parties, weddings or funerals. A major event each year was the appearance of the Chanters at Acacia cemetery on Memorial Day. That tradition continues.

One of the most memorable events every year was the Shrine Circus. It was really a big event in St. Paul. When I was about fourteen, my Dad asked me if I wanted to work at the Shrine circus with him. I asked, “What do we do?” Seems that we didn't know until we arrived and received our assignments. That first day, I missed most of the circus because we were both out in

back with shovels, following around the elephants. Actually, they were rather nice, if compared to the horses. The horses seemed to enjoy messing up things anyplace, anytime, while the elephants seemed more delicate - sensitive? After working that job for two circuses, we were promoted to selling cotton candy and popcorn. This was more fun and we could see part of the circus! I still remember the looks on the faces of those children when they were handed some pink cotton candy. I think I enjoyed it more than they did! My Dad and I had many more years of fun working at the circus. I could not wait to become a Shriner.

I became a Mason in 1958 and a Shriner in 1968. The weekend I went through the Ceremonial at Zor Temple in Madison, Wisconsin, was not an easy one. During the previous week, I suffered a severe ankle sprain at work. I was on crutches and thought my joining would be postponed. “Oh, No,” the Shriners at Zor said, “We'll take good care of you.” I wasn't sure about their tone of voice but decided to go through with it. All went well and I was proud to be a Shriner!

My Dad was fortunate to work for the same employer, after the war, for fifty years and was a member of the Osman Temple for the whole time. My life was not that settled. After joining Zor Temple, I moved my family eight times and I was a member of eight different Temples in this country, I may have set a record of Fez ownership. I wanted to be active in my local Temple and a membership 1,000 miles away did not seem appropriate for me.

Another generation was coming. My wife and I had three sons. They enjoyed the Shrine circuses in Madison, St. Paul, St. Louis and Phoenix. St. Louis may have been the most spectacular - held outside at the Cardinals ballpark. The Nobles there

truly did themselves proud with a super show.

While living in Rapid City, I was a member of the Naja Temple. When the circus came, I convinced those in charge that I had participated in several other shows, in many capacities and I volunteered to be in charge of the elephant rides! I stood at the top of the platform and helped the riders onto the elephant. (Hint: try to get as many as possible onto the animal - more profit that way.) My wife and I arrived early at the first performance and I convinced her to ride on Betty, our old reliable elephant. She was reluctant, not Betty but my wife, but finally agreed. She never forgot that ride. “Quite amazing,” was her comment.

As years have passed the obvious has happened - another generation comes along - six grandchildren. I have been fortunate to live close to two of them, here in Phoenix. I have taken them to the circus the last several years and we are all looking forward to the next one. My grandson likes the motorcycles that go around inside a closed cage as well as the bears, lions, and elephant rides. My granddaughter likes the clowns, the dog act and the ponies. (My son enjoys the ladies on the trapeze.)

Of course, they ride the ponies and the elephants each year. They always leave with a circus souvenir, usually a monkey bouncing on a stick. The bottom line is - they always have a great time and look forward to next year.

It is an especially good feeling to see the hundreds of children enjoying the circus. At the same time, we think of the good the Shriners do for the children in the Shriners Hospitals for Children ® system. My Dad had a nephew who was born in the late twenties, just before the depression. He lived on a farm in Minnesota and the family of six had very little income to go on. It was apparent that the boy's right foot was not growing, as it should. He would be handicapped all his life. My Dad, as a

Mason, was aware of the Shriner's Hospital for Children in Minneapolis and referred the boy for help. After three surgeries, all completely paid for, he was given a special shoe to wear. He was made as normal as possible and lived a very successful life as a high school English teacher.

During my life, I have had the opportunity to refer three children to the Shrine hospitals. Two were immediately accepted and treated and one was placed under an annual watch program to follow his condition. My love for the Shriners and the circus - was easily renewed when I experienced these cases personally.

I thank the Temples I have belonged to: Zor, Osman, Salaam, Moolah, Naja, Sabbar, Zelzah, and El Zaribah. They all have dedicated, hardworking Nobles who exemplify the true principles of the Shrine.

My life was changed and enhanced because of my membership in the Masons and the Shrine. I thank my Dad for the opportunity to experience these relationships. I hope I have lived up to the super example he set for me.

I thank my two grandfathers. One, a Mason, suggested that my Dad should consider joining the Lodge. The other, a conservative Lutheran Pastor, who thought it to be ok to join. In no way has my Masonic life conflicted with my church life - instead it has supported and encouraged my church beliefs and membership.

Shriner’s Village 1

(PHILADELPHIA) Amer Samdani, M.D., chief of surgery at Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Philadelphia, has been selected as a 2013 Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) traveling fellow. As a traveling fellow,

he will learn from major spinal deformity centers around the world. The fellowship will visit sites throughout Europe, including England, Germany, Switzerland and Russia, finishing in France with the culmination at the 48th annual SRS meeting.

The SRS traveling fellowship is a competitive, prestigious fellowship, with candidates chosen through an application process involving the review of academic publications, maintaining a SRS membership in good standing and being 45 years of age or younger. In addition to Dr. Samdani, two others were selected from over 50 applications that were reviewed: Firoz Miyanji, M.D., FRCSC, of Vancouver, BC, Canada; and Vikas Patel, M.D., of Denver, Colo.

Dr. Samdani will be learning and teaching while he is traveling for three weeks across Europe. He is eager to learn from other orthopaedic surgeons and neurosurgeons. They will observe surgery together, followed by case studies. Through discussion of the techniques used in the operating room, the leaders in the

spinal deformity centers will educate traveling fellows. Dr. Samdani will bring his expertise in neurosurgery and the fusionless treatment of scoliosis that is practiced at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Philadelphia to those at the spinal deformity centers for collaboration.

The trip is led by Randal Betz, M.D., past SRS president and emeritus chief of staff at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Philadelphia.

“I am very excited to be able to learn from surgeons at world-renowned spine deformity centers and also tell others about the work that happens at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Philadelphia. It is an amazing opportunity for me and the hospital. I couldn't have asked for a better senior fellow, my own personal mentor, Dr. Betz, to be traveling with.” said Dr. Samdani.

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Philadelphia is honored to have two leaders from the spine team traveling with the SRS traveling fellowship. Upon their return, both Drs. Samdani and Betz will teach the rest of the spine team about the latest innovations they learned while abroad.

in 1966 with 35 members, has since gained recognition as one of the world’s premier spine societies. Current membership includes over 850 of the world’s leading spine surgeons, as well as researchers, physician assistants, other allied health professionals and orthotists who are involved in research and the treatment of spinal deformities.

anybody who dares to ask. We have displayed some of the patient’s thoughts and pictures with you here. To see more, stop by the hospital and check out the door of the office. I post new notes when I get them.

The hospital staff works so very closely with our Shrine children and their families. We meet and greet them, arrange travel, comfort, and help them through every facet of their treatment.

Good evening, your wonderful organization had my son, Lincoln DelGuidice, seen last year with a doctor and he was given x-rays to monitor his cerebral palsy. The entire experience from beginning to end was like nothing we had experienced throughout our many doctor visits and it was so evident that your care for the children comes first! Our 2013 Fall Ceremonial Honoree Noble Worshipful Brother Bill Fain

Bill Fain was born in Cottonwood,

Arizona. He was raised as a Mason in Aztlan Lodge #1 in 1960, exactly 25 years after his father, Norman Fain, was raised, and 50 years after his grandfather Dan Fain was raised. He joined El Zaribah in November of 1963 and became Master of Aztlan Lodge #1 in 1968 during the Arizona Masonry Centennial Year. Bill has been and still is an active member of Yavapai Shrine Club and served as President of the Club in 1983. He is also a member of the

Royal Order of Jesters and the Prescott Billiken Club. Bill attended the University of Arizona and received his B.S. in Business Administration

with Dual Concentration in Business Economics and Finance. He married Nancy in 1960. They have 3 Sons; Norm III, Ron, and Brad, and 1 daughter Dawn Wasowicz. All three sons belonged to DeMolay and Bill served for over 10 years as an advisor. Dawn was in Rainbow and a current member of Eastern Star. Nancy is a loyal member of Qadesh Temple Daughters of the Nile, and has been for nearly as long as she has been married.

The Fain family legacy in ranching and land development is well known in and around the Prescott area and Bill centered his career on land development, water and natural resource development, as well as ranching.

Noble Bill has been very involved in many Civic and Cultural Organizations in Yavapai County like the Sharlot Hall Historical Society and Prescott Chamber of Commerce and has served on several natural resource conservation committees in the area. The Fains have been very generous philanthropically also, providing gifts and donations to many civic and nonprofit organizations.

Bill Fain has spent his life working towards making Arizona a better place to live. His activities and dedication to Masonry and El Zaribah Shrine have set the example for all to follow, and through his benevolence he has helped thousands of people have a better life. He truly exhibits the tenants of Freemasonry; Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth. We honor Noble Worshipful Brother Bill Fain as our 2013 Lake Havasu Fall Ceremonial Honoree.

shape. We are ready to charge into a year full of activities and spills. I am sure much gravy and many beans will be on the tables and members’ fingers in the coming months of serving at Temple activities.

The October CIF has been cancelled due to just too many things going on but will return next spring with all of the proper sides, spillage and an attitude! If we missed you with the beans in the past, we will get another chance, not a threat but a promise!

The Culinary Unit and the Directors Staff are combining our forces to serve a “Desert Breakfast” at the Temple on November 10. You will have to use your imagination with the cactus. We will be serving bacon, eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy (another chance to dribble something on your fingers) hash browns and assorted beverages. It may be necessary to bring a designated driver for a morning affair. Sounds like a great time to get together for great food and fellowship! We will also being doing this again in the spring in the Superstition Mountains, a REAL “Desert Breakfast” next time, so watch where you walk. The cacti will be real this time around. If your eggs are burned, blame the Director’s Staff or someone who cares, we only spill things and don’t apologize.

Our next meetings are going to be moved again, maybe to an undisclosed location and on a new date. It seems we are again scheduled on the same night as the El-Dulabs meeting; and since we both use the same room, we will be somewhere else within the Temple. Ask in the Red Fez Room if you would like to attend, I hope Lou Ann will know where we will be, because I don’t have a clue. We meet at 7:00 and enjoy dinner before in the Red Fez, that much I do know.

We still are trying to sell the two mini-parade vehicles, if you are interested contact Mike Fenno for prices. We will sell either or both, so bring your checkbook. It looks like fun parade season coming up!

Band The talented Shrine BAND Unit

has a true “Gem” among them. Jack Wetmore reached his 99th birthday August 6, 2013. He has forwarded an astounding

chronology of his life. He was born in Kansas City, Kansas and his father bought him his first clarinet when he was 12 years old. He told Jack, “Attitude is everything”. Jack played in the high school band, the DeMolay band, the University of Kansas band, & since 1968, the El Zaribah band. He attended George Washington University for graduate studies. In 1950-51 Jack was the Air Force Industrial Property Officer for refurbishing B-29 bombers to go to Korea. He became a Scottish Rite Mason in 1951 and was Worshipful Master of the Clarksdale Lodge in 1957. He was the El Zaribah Band President in 1988. Jack has attended many WSAs and just about all the parades in which the EZ Band has participated. Jack says, “The best part of music is making it”.

The Temple Band Needs You. This is an invitation to all Shriners receiving this month’s Arabian Tales. Dig out that horn and come participate with the Band Unit. We don’t worry about your current level of capability; the big concern is whether or not you are enjoying being a part of our musical family. Three Nobles, Tom Richard, Sanford Wax and Virgil Johnston participated in all seven performances, while five performances were worked by Nobles Paul McCullough, Glynn Ley, & Earl Trundy. We applaud all the Nobles and especially Illustrious Sir Jack Garrett for their efforts in presenting another successful El Zaribah Shrine Circus.

To be a member of the Legion of Honor a Noble has an additional membership requirement that is to have been or is currently a member of the Armed Forces of the United States or its Allies and to have served honorably. Eligible Nobles and their Ladies are invited to check us out. We meet for dinner at 6:00 PM in the Red Fez and meet at 7:00 in the LOH Room at the El Zaribah Auditorium each month except June, July and August.

Oriental Band The Oriental Band has been

active in the summer and early fall parades. Most recently, we were at the Prescott Valley and Payson parades as well as the Show

Low/Pinetop parade. We also enjoyed playing at the Shrine Circus march-in.

Come join us for our 2nd Tuesday of the month stated meetings to see what we are participating in next or when the next rehearsal will be.

By special request of our float drivers, we have been asked to increase our repertoire beyond the standard 3 songs that we are known for. This year we are practicing to double that number so come out and have some fun with us.

We have seen a slight fall off in attendance and would like to see our meetings get back to our normal number of attendees. We continue to support the Ceremonials and need volunteers to help set up, tear down, and assist with the ceremony as needed. We will be working with the Shrine in Los Angeles in Lake Havasu to put on a joint Ceremonial for our two groups. This will be a lot of fun and we encourage you to join us to make sure El Zaribah has a good turnout.

We are always looking for new members so if you are interested please join us for our regular monthly meeting on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 6PM in the Red Fez Room for dinner prior to our meeting. You and your Lady will be our guests.

We meet on the third Wednesday of each month for dinner at 6:00pm in the Red Fez Room followed by a meeting at 7:00pm in our meeting room.

Drum & Bugle Corps plans to be very active during that event in October. You should see us performing multiple times throughout the weekend. The entire weekend promises to be a Shrine event to remember.

The Joint OV of the Drum & Bugle Corps, Patrol, Roadrunners, Band, DeMolay, Sandbaggers, Oriental Band and Computer Club will be held Friday evening, November 15, at 6:00 pm. We’d like to see a lot of guests there to join us in our celebration, especially the other Unit & Club heads. Contact Jack Garrett or the Head of any of those Units and Clubs for additional information.

Mobile Nobles Shrine Club Our first meeting will be held on

Thursday, Oct. 17th @7:15 PM at Venture Out Resort, 5001 East Main in Mesa. We get started a little later than most groups, as the majority of our

members are winter visitors. There has been very little going on during the

summer except for the aluminum can project. Those working the can project during the summer were Nobles Tom Rickard, Cecil Miller and John LeClair. Thanks for a great job during those hot summer days. One change from last year as we have moved our can operation to the NE corner in Venture Out Resort.

Our members have had a long break so everyone should be fresh and ready to go. See you in October.

Yuma Shrine Club The Yuma Shrine Circus has come

and gone. Our regular meetings have begun on the second Tuesday of every month 7pm, at American

Legion Post 19. With October comes cooler weather and the

start of winter parades in our area. This year we have added many new members to the Yuma Shrine Club and we encourage them to get active in the club in some form. The Yuma Renegades parade unit is always looking for new members to be in parades. Some members have extra parade cars for sale. You do not need a mini car or truck. A utv, atc, side by side, motor trike, dune buggy, etc. will do. Contact any Renegade member for information. Yuma Shrine

and meeting are on the 10th in Apache Hall. The luncheon starts at 12:30 PM. A steak fry is scheduled on the 17th at the Gazebo; social hour at 5PM and cook the steaks at 6PM. Bring steak and beverage for you, and a side dish or dessert for about eight people.

A heads-up for November; The monthly luncheon and meeting will be held on the 7th, and a golf tournament on the 17th. The weather should be cool enough to have a great time. A Scooters Fish Fry will be held at the gazebo on the 20th. See you there.

Computer Club Notice: Computer Club meetings

have been moved to the First Monday of the Month, except June, July and August. Our meetings are at 7:00 PM in

the Computer Room. If our previous meeting night was a problem to attend now is a renewed opportunity to participate.

Many of us have dinner together in the Red Fez Room prior the meeting. We spend little time with administrative action and most talking about or working with computers. We have several computers all set up for use of the members. If you have a computer problem that requires bringing in your computer do not hesitate to do that.

Examples of problems we have worked on recently include: Install a new hard drive, learning how to use Windows 8, question regarding disabling anti-virus to use a program, computer freezing, slow computer and linking 3 computers linked together & loading Skype.

At our September meeting we discussed the pros/cons of upgrading existing hardware vs. purchasing replacements, Microsoft deadline for supporting Windows XP and what to expect when this happens, Cell Phone problems and worked on several laptop problems brought in by the members.

the intermission of the 3:00 pm Shrine Circus on Saturday, September 14. We had a great time watching the kids watch us play down on the track. Maybe we’ve inspired some future

Zane Grey August was a busy month for the

Zane Grey Shrine. Don Castleman did his usual excellent job on the golf tournament. The event was a great success. Over 70 golfers

played and every tee had at least two sponsors. Thanks to Don, Dick Ceyler, Marty Christie, Steve Cantrill, Carl Weatherly and Roger Weber for their work on this tournament.

First place winners were Terry Lindsey, Gary Vaplon, Mike McKee and Dick Harding.

Second place winners were Joe Morgan, Virgil Cly, Jordan Hinton and Brian Echols

Third place winners were Mike Eilenfeldt, Jim Dalgleish, Jesse Smith and Dan Zertuche

The following day our annual Official Visit was held at the Elks Club following the Payson Rodeo Parade. The Ladies from the Daughters of the Nile and wives of Nobles stepped up to the call and furnished appetizers and desserts. Nobles and wives worked from early in the morning through the event to make it a success. Ill. Sir Ed Stolze, Lady Cheryl and Divan members ate and mingled with members of Zane Grey and other El Zaribah members from around the state who participated in the parade earlier that morning. Zane Grey Shrine Club made donations to El Zaribah’s General Fund, Transportation Fund, Helping fund, and discretionary funds for the Potentate and Lady Cheryl.

Aramel Club DON'T COUNT US OUT!!! Several ladies of the ARAMEL CLUB (widows of

Shriners) felt revitalized as a result of the 2013 CornFest. We had a great time and it was soooo good to see so many of our friends.

We had our usual table and our wine baskets and chances to win sales were very productive.

The entire proceeds were turned over to the Potentate at the close of the weekend and drawings for the winners of the baskets were held on

Sunday. Some of the baskets were not picked so if you were a winner, please contact the Shrine office and claim your prize. They are being well taken care of, but won’t last forever!

It was old and faded like the man, It's edges were worn quite thin.

I approached the park bench where he sat,

To give the old brother his due, I said, "I see you've traveled east,"

He said, "I have, have you."

I said, "I have, and in my day before the all seeing sun,

I played in the rubble, with Jubala, Jubalo and Jubalum."

He shouted, "don't laugh at the work my son,

It's good and sweet and true, And if you've traveled as you said,

You should give these things their due."

The word, the sign, the token, The sweet Masonic prayer,

The vow that all have taken, Who've climbed the inner stair.

The wages of a Mason, are never paid in gold,

but the gain comes from contentment, when you're weak and growing old.

You see, I've carried my obligations, For almost fifty years,

It has helped me through the hardships and the failures full of tears.

Now I'm losing my mind and body, Death is near but I don't despair, I've lived my life upon the level, And I'm dying upon the square.

Sometimes the greatest lessons Are those that are learned anew,

And the old man in the park today has changed my point of view.

To all Masonic brothers, The only secret is to care,

May you live your life upon the level, May you part upon the square.
