Our Hymn of the Month for October is “How Firm a Foundation” (ELW #796). It was first
published in 1787 in A Selection of Hymns from the Best Authors, which was edited by
London pastor John Rippon. It is most often sung to the early American tune
“Foundation” (or “Protection”). Notice the quotation marks in verses 2, 3 and 4. In those
verses God is promising His eternal protection and love for His church and people.
“How Firm a Foundation” was the favorite hymn of General Robert E. Lee and was played
at his funeral. The hymn was also sung at the funerals of Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and
Woodrow Wilson. On Christmas Eve 1898, American units involved in the Spanish-American
War joined together to sing the hymn. The units were from both the North and the South.

The GLC Youth Group has been meeting
each Sunday from 4:30 to 6:00 in the YOT.
This fall we have been looking into issues and
questions such as peer pressure, why bad
things happen, fitting in and are all religions
the same. We have also been having fun
with some wacky games each week and
delicious snacks.
On October 13th we will have a game night
when each youth can bring a favorite
board game to play.
On October 27th we will have a Progressive
Dinner. The dinner will have the theme of
“500 Years of Lutherans.”
We will travel to several different
homes for appetizers, dinner and
desert then end up back at the church
for a bonfire and communion.
More details to come.

Our board is currently looking at envelope usage and how we can provide them without having to throw unused envelopes away at the end of the year. As part of this conversation we also want to make sure everyone is aware that you can also have your offering electronically paid to the church via Simply Giving, a program provided through Thrivent Financial. Participating in this program eliminates the need for offering envelopes, so before ordering next years envelopes we thought we would encourage anyone interested in switching to Simply Giving to sign up at this time. The form is included for your convenience or copies can be found on the Treasurer’s section of the bulletin board in the main hallway. This giving arrangement can be modified or cancelled at any time. You can return your completed form to the church office or our treasurer, Mike Allenbaugh.

Last month we started our new Bible study “In Good Company: Stories of Biblical Women” which is our topic for this year. We will meet many interesting women in the Bible. Their faith journey can help us exam our own path. In our first session we walked through Hannah’s story. This month we will meet Deborah who was a determined leader. The book of Psalms continues to lead our discussion as we study how God called these women in special ways. We use this time to have fellowship and to support each other as we learn God’s teachings. New members are always welcome.
Coffee – Remember to look for the coffee cart. Equal exchange coffee helps farmers get a fair share for their crops. Coffee can be purchased anytime the church office is open or use one of the envelopes on the coffee cart and
slip it under the church office door.
Box Tops for Education – Please save Box Top Coupons and/or UPC Codes found throughout your local grocery store Clipped coupons can be placed in the “Box Tops for Education” folder on the bulletin board across
the hall from Pastor’s office.

MUSCATINE CROP WALK
This year is the 42nd anniversary of the "Muscatine Crop Walk". The original crop walk was
started by Midwest farmers in 1947. They donated a wagon-load of grain to alleviate hunger in
Europe after WWII. The program has grown from those beginnings. Grace Lutheran has a long
history supporting the walk, one of the early organizers were Jack Richards and Ardyth
Laursen. This years walk will be on the 6th of October
at 2:00 p.m. on the river - front. Our representatives
from Grace are the Kelly family and Paul Wilts. We
will have envelopes for walkers on Sunday, September
1st. We hope many of you will participate in the walk
or support the walkers with your contributions.
Remember every dollar we raise is matched by the new
hope foundation. 25% of all the money raised will be
distributed to the food pantry and various other
charities right here in Muscatine.
― Paul Wilts
I am pleased to announce that Wittenberg University is continuing the Martin Luther Scholar
Award program initiated in 2008. This August, Wittenberg welcomed the sixth group of Martin
Luther Scholars to campus. This scholarship aims to recognize outstanding Lutheran students with
an $80,000 academic award and to give them the exceptional opportunity to continue their
education at Wittenberg, one of 26 ELCA-affiliated colleges and universities.
Located in Springfield, Ohio, Wittenberg University has been affiliated with the Lutheran Church
since our founding in 1845. Today, the 1,800 students who attend this national liberal arts univer-
sity are educated in the tradition of Martin Luther to discover their callings for service to humanity.
Current Martin Luther Scholars are having a positive influence on campus through their efforts as:
leaders in student government and student organizations, members of first year academic
honoraries, student athletes, Peer Helpers, Resident Advisors, graduates of our Emerging Leaders
program and chapel leaders, to name a few.
For the 2014-2015 academic year, we will provide 25 Martin Luther Scholar Awards to students
entering Wittenberg as freshmen. Each scholarship is worth $80,000 ($20,000 per year, renewable
over four years) and encourages recipients to experience personal and spiritual growth during their
time at Wittenberg. Your congregation in invited to select one student to receive a four-
year award. Through this award you have an opportunity to continue making a significant
difference in the life of a youth from your congregation.
To qualify, students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5, be a member of a
Lutheran congregation, and be acceptable for admission to Wittenberg University. To nominate a
student, locate the on-line form at www.wittenberg.edu/mls and submit your nomination by
November 4, 2013.

Please save this page to use for your prayer list. Pray for each person on their birthday. By the end of the year, you would have prayed for everyone in the congregation. If we have missed a birthday or anniversary, please call the church office at 263-5680.
